I’m really starting to get sad at the fact that these could all be amazing builds, especially the minecart one. It’s all very frustrating that they need to be simplified to fit into the framework of being these “courses” instead of potentially amazing sets.

Bongo drums. They put bongo drums in the stage set. Can we get anymore stereotypical from this monkey business?!?

I will also echo the mourning / lament of the Temple of Doom: Gone to soon, we hardly knew ye. RIP

By in United States,

I honestly really like these! They look like they’d be very fun for kids - what child doesn’t want to smash a monkey around on a bunch of blocks?

I know a lot of people would prefer Mario minifigs, but clearly there’s an undeniable appeal of these electronic bigfigs for the youngest Lego fans.

Cuz this Kong’s

By in United States,

I'm really only interested in the Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong build-a-figs. I don't need anything else from these sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Mine Cart Ride with Funky Kong reminds me of the new big Sonic set, to be honest. And for once the big set seems to be not half-bad value.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I cannot believe we're getting characters like Rambi and Squawks. Fans always talk about King K Rool and other fan favorite characters and they NEVER make it in, but I would actually believe there is a possibility me might get Lego K Rool at some point. There are just so many obscure characters I've been surprised we've been given.

Here come's LEGO putting Funky Kong in the most expensive set of the lineup. They knew what they were doing.

Right now I'm torn. Not sure if I'd be able to afford both the Dry Bowser set AND the Funky Kong one. Not counting the D2Cs, previous LEGO Mario waves only had one $100+ set in the summer wave.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m into these. Might have to wait for some discounts since the theme is a little expensive but I’m sure we’ll end up with most of them.

Rambi is great!

The mine-cart is giving me flashbacks to all of those difficult (but fun) levels.

I'd say it depends on how much DK stuff you plan to get. If you plan to get the set with Donkey Kong himself, go ahead and get the one with Funky. If not, go ahead and get Dry Bowser.

All Super Mario sets have digital building instructions only. And not as a pdf, they have to be viewed through an app.

Which is exactly the reason why I am not going to buy any more of them.
I can forgive digital instructions only when I buy from BB because their sets are so much better value for money, but when I pay premium like with LEGO I also expect a premium experience, and that for me includes physical instructions for the whole set.

I may have misunderstood your wording, but it sounds like you're claiming there are no PDF instructions for these sets. PDF instructions are available for all LEGO sets going back to 1996, and these are no exception. I download those and put them on an iPad.

By in United States,

Rambi and Squwaks! Lots of Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze vibes with these sets.

SUPER weird that these sets are intended for Mario/Luigi/Peach though. That image of Mario on Rambi's back and not DK is just strange.

Love the DKC2 reference with Dixie's guitars, shame we didn't get a matching boombox/shades combo for Diddy.

This!! I feel exactly the same way! Why hasn't anyone figured out a way yet to take simplistic sets and modify them to make them better? You would need to have some kind of interoperability between parts from different sets, like some kind of system. But you would also have to be some kind of set designer, and that's what Lego professionals are for. As a lifelong fan of Lego, I have no creativity or imagination, and certainly not bins full of the spare parts that it would take to make something different than what's printed on the box. Oh well, I guess I'll buy it anyway and then complain on message boards. That's how I have fun, after all.

Almost tempted to get the mine cart set for tracks and the base for a train, but it would be more worth it to just spend the little extra money for a train set

As someone who loves the modern DKC games to absolute death, I appreciate all the little details here. Especially in Funky's Fly n' Buy, such as the balloons and capsule machine. These sets already have more little references in them than the entirety of the Super Mario range up to this point.

I'm interested in the sound effects when Rambi moves. Did LEGO already know they were planning this and incorporate those effects into the figures when they were built?

It’s not a ghost, they’re just showing you that Mario can interact with the sets, but he’s not included.

Every time new Super Mario sets come out, the figures typically need to update over the internet (via a Bluetooth connection to the app running on a phone or tablet) to have the latest effects and reactions patched in. I expect that will be the same for these sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Apart from the mine cart the other expansion sets look a bit limited compared to last years wave of expansion sets, a compromise between more substantial builds vs longer pathways with more Mario squares but simple builds. For those not into Mario these will just pass you by like the previous expansion sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I long ago decided the Mario sets were a bridge too far *for me.* Clearly they appeal enormously to the target audience (and the target audience's parents!) and more and more they have begun to appeal to me. These sets make a delightful contribution to the theme and I look forward to using the new parts in my own mocs!

Those are not regular Lego train tracks, they're brick-built.

So you suggest each Expansion set should have Mario ? Which is probably at least like $20-30 New by itself as it's a bluetooth electronic component.

Any of the 3 Electronic starter courses are still available : https://brickset.com/sets/theme-Super-Mario/subtheme-Starter-Course

There are at least 40+ expansion sets that don't have the electronic components : https://brickset.com/sets/theme-Super-Mario/subtheme-Expansion-Set , that's why they are called expansions.

To get the other characters? And to use with the Mario/Luigi/Peach who you can get separately with the starter packs? This is a goofy criticism—even if the sets were radically different and not based around the digi-figures, it'd STILL be overkill for Mario to have to be included in every single set in the theme.

Unfortunately, I bet the current Nintendo license won't give them access to any of the original Rare games content, so nothing from DKC1/2/3 or DK64. But anything from DKC Returns or Tropical Freeze could be on the table.

All of the DK characters are Nintendo copyrights. Rare created Dixie and Funky but they're here. The others are probably just too unpopular for Lego, but you know what? This isn't frigging Funko Pop, we build things here. Go make a brick built Rambi.

Let's-a-go!

I'm more of a Sonic fan than I am Mario, although I liked the recent movie of Mario (Jack Black was the right choice!) better than the Sonic movies. I also remember an awful lot (if not all) of these kongs have cameos during the arena fight scene which was a nice touch, but sorry Mario, when it hits August, Sonic is where my money will be going.

Yikes, this was one of the hardest comments to read, and not just from a grammatical perspective.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@LeonHardJPG:
They do it in very limited situations. Dimensions had digital instructions because it would have you tear down and rebuild the model anytime you switched one of the accessories to a different mode. These get it because it allows them to use movement to show how to play the game, where paper is static images. And the Bricklink sets get it because it helps keep costs down on something that’s not _really_ an official LEGO set.

@560heliport:
They’re LEGO Minecraft tracks.

@TeriXeri:
Heh. Imagine the blind bags. $25 for each villain (plus another basic Mario to throw in a pile).

By in United States,

I’m happy that DK isn’t an electronic figure as I already own 3 and don’t want to have to buy another. But it seems strange that is Mario, Luigi, and Peach who are playing DKC, while the actual players have been relegated to simply being friends like Yoshi and Toad. Somehow I doubt my kids will care. I feel like my son will gravitate to Diddy’s and Funky’s set, while my daughter will like Dixie. I personally hope this means we’ll get a set for the original arcade game.

Biggest disappointment with these is that they have so few barrels and so few bananas despite both being core parts of the Donkey Kong universe since forever. They made what appears to be a brand new bunch-of-bananas piece but then included only one copy in the Donkey set and that's it.

@Huw, I see these are tagged with specific game names (like Tropical Freeze). That does not seem practical in the long run. Maybe OK for DK, but there are quite a few games featuring (say) Luigi, which would make a huge list of tags that could impact site usability. Or are these games specifically called out by LEGO for these sets?

I added those tags because there are specific elements of those games that are found in the sets, and we have games tagged for other Super Mario sets. However, I do see that it clogs up the lists more than the other ones, so I have removed them and just kept the Donkey Kong Series tag.

By in United Kingdom,

I like the banana leaf piece. Not much else is useful to what I build. Some might wish for railway track pieces with brown sleepers, rather than brick-built imitation track.

I can understand the will to save paper, since many of us have multiples of sets with instructions, but not everyone has either a big enough screen to display online instructions legibly, with adjacent space to build near the screen, or a printer for the pdf. And are these sets that people are likely to buy in multiple? A steep price per piece, even at 20% off, suggests not.
