By in Austria,

Whoa! It looks amazing! I can't wait to binge through Ninjago City, Ninjago City Gardens and this set as soon as I can get my hands on it! 16745 pieces! I feel giddy just thinking about it!

Upon further reflection it does look a bit empty, especially when put next to Ninjago City Gardens. Although I bet it looks better with a building at either side.

Also, I think I'm gonna leave out the toilet function, because c'mon. I'm not gonna pollute my waters with raw sewage! In fact, I think gonna replace the whole bathroom with something else. I mean, right next to the food-stand? Has nobody thought of the smell?!

By in Moldova,

This set is beautifoul!!! I just can't get it how it is so cheap, lol!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ninjago City public transit: highly modern.
Ninjago City sewage systems: medieval.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Very nice! I really like that it's huge, and that the mix of vibrant colours and more natural ones will help with arranging the other Ninjago modulars into an awesome cityscape.

The very short cable car journey is the only thing I can see that I'm not 100% into.

"Ninja-ninja, ninja-ninja-POO!"

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

To me it doesn't have that usual wow factor.
It's supposed to be the biggest NINJAGO set ever, but all I see is empty space. Where did all those pieces go, then?
I have the City and the Gardens, but like the Docks this one is an easy pass.

By in Sweden,

Instant purchase for me too. And so great that they're still releasing a set for this series every now and then, it's so unique! Now I need to find a way to have this set join its brothers who are across the ocean...

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I'm also noticing that this one includes the new Ninjago designs for the ninjas. I guess this is how they'll be joining the old and reboot stuff, not that it's that important in this subseries!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i hate that after all these years we are FINALLY getting borg. In a set i can't afford.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

My initial thought was: "Meh, maybe I will get it later on a discount".

Then I watched the video on the LEGO site about this:
- Working cable car?: check
- Small elevator, with wheelchair access?: check
- Working toilet, that allows you to flush pieces of poo down and have them end up in the sewage system?: double check

Now I need this...

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Oh my…, this is (another) piece of art. I LOVE it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Gondola! Gondola! Two types of gondola in one set? Minifigs playing with nanofigs, that's perverse!

Looks great! Love the vines on the support girders. Like the lifts, pizza place, and working poopy pipe (that is totally, environmentally disgusting, however). A little treatment plant room with a rotating drum that bins brown and dumps out trans blue would've been an even more exciting play feature.

But, the PRICE?! $370 for 21 figs and 6,200 pieces? In 2023???!!! Fantastic! Unbelievable!

Lego wants us back?

Ok (smiles coyly), maybe we can try again, baby.

This is a Day 1 with any sort of GWP or 2x points.

By in Netherlands,

I don't want to be too negative (because I don't want to be deleted AGAIN):
To me it also doesn't have the wow factor. There's a lot of stuff going on, but not a lot of cohesion. Also, Ninjago City was supposed to be an old city (ground level), with over age more modern buildings on top. This just screams cyberpunk from an experienced afol.

I'd say the old city is still there (left side with the brown buildings like a old bakery), but I guess this set just tries to bring the modern and old city together more with that cable car.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Looks a bit meh! on its own I think. But looks good next to the City Gardens.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

I see not everybody is convinced about this set.

Therefore, I will say it again: "THIS SET HAS A WORKING TOILET WITH PIECES OF POO YOU CAN FLUSH DOWN!"

How . Can. You. Not. Love. That???

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I really don't understand where all the pieces go. It's a lot of empty space and maybe four rooms in it. The rest is decoration with really small pieces everywhere. No comparison to the previous Ninjago flagship sets.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Okay, I was NOT expecting Lego to drop the images for this this early...but oh my lord does this look incredible! Definitely going to be a day one buy for a lot of people (especially among those who have City and Gardens to book end it).

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Looks like they had a few good ideas like the green tower, the octopus, Seilbahn + Station and that’s it.

Because of the cable car + station’s size they had to fill the empty space with stuff and in the end we got this.

Personally I think something is missing or it looks like something is missing. For example that lower street just empty.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This is an absolute love letter to Ninjago.

Gravatar
By in France,

This is an amazing addition! All the details are so cool, and the price point is unexpectedly low (compared to what Lego got us used to)!
Definitely grabbing this!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

On first view, it does look like a lot of empty space, but it is )I think) on double the baseplate footprint of 70620, so maybe overall it's about the same amount of buildings, spread out more.

Price is a bit toppy, but 70620 was £260, and that was 6 years back.............

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Pretty insane set, lol. I need some time to process this monster. :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like it, don’t love it. It’s weird how the OG Ninjago City accomplished so much in half the space with 2/3 of the pieces.

I’ll probably get it, but not immediately

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This will fill the gap in my heart that 4852 never filled because I was in my dark ages.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I'll say it again, the Ninjago City sets are the absolute pinnacle of lego design to me. I'm totally not into anything Ninjago at all, except these amazing sets. They offer the most diverse and amazing building techniques and details I've seen in any set to date. Usually some really new and "way out there" technical marvels. The Ninjago City range is consistent in sheer quality and, although a bit pricier now like everything in the world, still an absolute must for me. Great addition to my Ninjago City.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

THIS is the biggest of the Ninjago city sets?

Seems like you like to complain without having even seen what you complain about in real life. And seems some people like to see you complaining without having even seen what you and they complain about in real life.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The cable car is an interesting idea and will increase play-ability although does leave an empty space in the middle so I would place 71795 Temple of the Dragon Energy Cores there set back a little. Seems to only really make sense as an expansion set to the buildings on either side when it looks fantastic as in the last photo.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Like a few others have noted, this didn't have the instant 'I must have this' compared to the previous Ninjago City sets (have all the others so far).

Time may tell but for now, I'm ok not to get this. Possibly swayed if decent GWP or points promo (again as mentioned before).

Although if my wife sees it my purchase decision may be made for me...

Gravatar

Can you make a subtheme for "Ninjago Modular Collection" so that we can have them together like the regular "Modular Buildings Collection".

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice to see some long overdue characters and variants, even if I wish they were in more accessible sets. Now if only we could get the First Spinjitzu Master, Lou and Lilly, Dr. Julien, Cliff Gordon/Fritz Donegan, the Serpentine War era Elemental Masters…the list goes on.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Held off other purchases waiting for this - that decision has been more than justified - LOVE IT!

Deffo have to think about some different display solutions though!!!

After looking over all of the images for the last hour, I do have to say that I am inclined to agree with you. For being a "Markets" set it is pretty sparse in activity.

Usually a market in downtown would have multiple tents, wagons and pop-up stands selling fruit, fish, etc. And yet here there is one small stand in the middle of the ground floor and a small table for tea. Other than that, however, there is just a lot of grey empty space, which is a shame.

Also, I'm not the biggest fan of there being a bridge and a walkway behind it in close proximity. I would have much preferred that the river continued from the front of the model to the back with the bridge being more centred and the only way to get to the other side. That way there'd be a bit less grey empty space.

A bit of a let down after the impressive Gardens. Lacks the clout of high buildings. Still a Day One purchase for me. Even though I have no clue how I'm going to display everything now.

It's because this set is... 2.5 baseplates wide? It's also meant to be a junction between city blocks If you were to put the two buildings on the side together, you'd get something massive. And it's also meant to bridge between the higher sets like City and Gardens, while connecting to lower ones like Docks.

By in Australia,

Ninjago City System: When the modular buildings are too poor for you.

Jokes aside, I'm not sure if I'll get this. By the time the Ninjago Movie sets retired, I was pretty much done with the theme, and although I love the minifigures and buildings, I can't justify making space for this. I might Bricklink some of the figures, but I'll stick with Modulars for now.

But that the price is pretty fair... Boy, this is the most torn I've felt towards a LEGO set in ages.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I love it. But it’s too big for my set up! I have room for 1 baseplate, maybe 1 1/2. But not two! I’ll get it but I really don’t know how I’ll integrate it to my Ninjago city (which includes both sets and mocs).

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I respect sets Ninjago City and Ninjago City Gardens. They had "wow" factor IMHO but I am not sure if this one has it.
I feel like it's too much "cosmic Monkie kid" style (that theme can be also attractive) and I think about Ninjago City more as "colourful city display for every age".

@CapnRex101 What do You think about putting weight of set next to the piece count? Since number of pieces isn't great to calculate value/money. Probably this set will have a lot 1x1 and 1x2 pieces. :/

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe I should have gotten into these fancy Ninjago city sets instead of amassing Harry Potter buildings.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a surprise when I woke up this morning. Sure is plenty space in the middle. The cable car is so cool! I'm just wondering where 6000 + pieces went here in the building of the set. It is neat to look at. I like some NPU here.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I think you guys seriously underestimate the footprint of this set, there´s gonna be a huge amount of pieces just for reaching 4-5 studs of height.

How lazy do you have to be to ride that cable-car though? If you can expand that, it'll be great, but walking is probably just as fast if not faster than waiting for the car."

Same goes for the bridge in front: you can walk around the water as well, saves you the stairs if you have bad knees. But if you're allergic to fish the bridge is the better option, you don't have to pass the fish stand. On the other hand, there might be fish in the water, so... nevermind.

Gravatar

I absolutely love the cyberpunk style. I need this. Also, it only has 4 less pieces than Rivendell.

Rivendell vs Ninjago City Markets. Hm…

Yes, there are a lot of tiles 1X2 trans for the water...so from this 6100 pieces a lot go to empty space.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As others have said, it doesn't make me go wow, neither does it look suitable to be considered Ninjago City Markets. It's probably because it's stretched out more, but I still prefer Ninjago City and Ninjago City Gardens. I like it, just not as much as prior sets.
The minifig inclusions are really interesting! We finally get Borg, Gayle Gossip, Vinny, Chamille, and Detective Zane! Other nice inclusions are Miss Demeanor(I guess, I found her to be very annoying in the show), Hounddog McBrag, Racer Seven, and a new Dareth with a very accurate facial expression. They have checked off quite a few legacy characters in this set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's 3/4 the price of 10316 Rivendell, but the same number of pieces & minifigs; is the licensing worth THAT MUCH?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think it's hilarious they included a minifigure sized working toilet. I think it's poor form that they love to boast about their environmentalism but then design a toilet that sends raw sewage into an open waterway or back alley gutter. (You decide which it is, but it's open to the public.) I don't think it's a reason to boycot, I just think somebody in the LEGO Self-righteous Department let one slip by.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really don't want to get caught in another theme trap, but this does look very tempting, which would probably lead me to Garden, Docks and City.

I love the cable car. Come on Lego... Go the extra mile to a full suspended monorail system!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It does look a little overwhelming for the piece count, but I suspect that is due to the pictures lacking a suitable sense of scale.

It's difficult to see the details on such massive sets without having them in person, or at least a huge gallery showing off all the different rooms.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Do I have the room for it? NO! Will I get it? Try and stop me!!!!
City...Docks...Gardens...I'd like you to meet Markets; You four will always have a home here with me!

Inclusivity is awesome!

Hey, I feel what you're saying, though, just wanted to let you know I collect Ninjago City modulars and still feel that I'm always missing on some other releases. I'm not sure that there's a remedy for that.

So I'd like to comfort you and say that your HP collection is awesome enough by itself and that you should enjoy it to the full, while not lamenting for other sets.

None of us will be able to collect all the (great) sets Lego designs. And that's why our carefully picked collections add more value to us.

Gravatar

If you don't immediately love this set, it's probably because you haven't seen the TV show. As a fan, there are so many things I love about this set, from the first 'normal' Cyrus Borg to all the old Ninjago sets on the posters.

One does not simply obtain LotR licensing...*

(*one has to be charged an arm and a leg for it, and then pass those fees onto customers)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Incredible the times we’re living in in terms of Lego sets. Something released like this a decade ago would be unthinkable

Gravatar
By in United States,

If you take the blue spire off of the gardens, the markets is the same height. And this has a much larger footprint. I think this will look larger in person compared to pictures. And I don't recall the gardens having much for gardens either, so this being light on the markets side of things is unsurprising.

That said, I'm definitely getting this. I love the build experiences these Ninjago City sets provide. And as a fan of the show the minifigure selection is so many minifigures we have been waiting for... since 2014 for Cyrus Borg alone.

Looking forward to building this with my wife. It'll be a great time!

EHHHHHHH

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I own all 3 of the Ninjago City sets, and they are my favourite sets ever, especially the first one.

This one looks slightly less intricate than the City and Gardens sets, I can't quite put my finger on it, but is it because above the ground floor in City and Gardens are top heavy and densely packed as you might expect a city centre to be. This is a bit more spacious and the difference between the levels isn't as stark.

It's footprint is going to cause me some shelf space angst.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I hope this looks a lot better in the flesh, because the photos don't do it justice. I don't understand the loo fascination, I really don't, that puts me off almost completely.

I'll get it because I have the others, but I'm not excited about it.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

The minifigure lineup blows the other Ninjago City sets out of the water! I hope this doesn't rule out a Borg Tower in the future though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

FINALLY! It’s glorious! I love every bit. The layout of the buildings isn’t great, the openness of the bottom with the stall is fantastic, it really feels expansive(more so than it is). There’s so much going on in here. It’s been day one before it was announced! So ready.

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

Oh hell... I have unpacked 10305, which I was going to unpack and build. But while I`m running out of storage space, will have to move 10305 to the wardrobe and build this magnificent baby.
Owning 70620, 70657 and 71741 is a pleasure burden, can`t miss the NINJAGO modulars streak:)

Gravatar
By in United States,

It looks good, I'm glad they remembered to put play features in this one this time (looking at you City Gardens and your one tiny arcade cabinet). I love the cable car, and the flushable toilet looks fun, but oof $370 is a lot. I'm probably not going to get this. If I sell some other sets and make room for it, maybe.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

If I had known they were coming out with these Ninjago City sets every year I would have bought the first one!

I loved the first Ninjago City set; it showed what true love and talent for the medium and subject could produce. I generally avoid limited run lines however because I like to add every year (like City/Creator) which is why I didn't buy it.

I'm sure when all attached all these Cities look absolutely neo-futuristic fantastic!

Am I really the only idiot that counted the number of 2x1 blue transclear tiles lengthwise in the HD photos, and deducted from the fact that there are only 32 of them taht this is indeed 2 baseplates wide? Seems to be the case. Not sure what this says about my mental health aka LEGO obsession.

By in United States,

I don't really buy anything larger than a Modular, and I don't really buy Ninjago anymore, so I don't plan on getting this (not that there's anything wrong with it; it looks good and seems like a good value for money). However, even as someone who doesn't plan on getting this, there is something about this set that excites me: the return of 1x1 plates in Sand Blue! I kind of have plans that need several of those...

Edit: in case anyone cares, the 1x1 plates in Sand Blue can be seen in the bakery section visible in the bottom left of the back of the box

I love the Ninjago City sets and this does look awesome, but it's missing a little bit of the punch I felt with the original two. The Gardens felt empty in the center where the tree grows, and the Markets feel even emptier even though I love the rail car feature. I didn't like the cramped interiors in the Gardens either and this one has far less interior spaces than I expected due to the empty center section.

These sets are still some of the best LEGO has ever produced but I think the original two have a charm the new ones don't. Apart from the better interiors on the originals, I can't quite put my finger on why I don't like the new ones as much!

And that's why our carefully picked collections add more value to us."

We are gathered here today to witness the best Brickset comment of the year.

As a lover of the first 2 sets (and lover of the movie) this just doesn’t wow me like I was hoping. I think a lot of it is lost on my because I don’t watch the show. I’ll be getting it day one, and I already have some MODs planned…

Return of the sand blue 1x1 is pretty nice.
Why are they so valuable? I get that they only came in one harry potter set, so that should push them up a bit, but not so ridiculously high. (NZD they average about $9 compared to ~10c for most other colours.)
Was there a particular MOC or MOD that became popular and caused them to be sought after? Or do people just really like the colour?

Oh yeah. I have a Ninjago District in mine...and a starting of an MK one. Right now they’re both one & same with MK being a few baseplates away from Ninjago. I think they go well together if spaced out a bit.

The good thing is, it is LEGO. You can replace them with pink bits and pretend they are pieces of sugar candy that taste like strawberry and smell of caramelised sugar. The only reason why they are being flushed down is because you are allergic to sugar.

The most exciting part of this entire set, in my opinion, is the fact that it shows that LEGO has finally recolored the small curved Technic panel in white (or is it light tan?) for use as a roll of toilet paper. When that piece first appeared, I knew it was perfect for use as paper towels and toilet paper, but it only came in garish colors like blue and neon yellow. Finally, finally I will be able to put realistic toilet paper in all of my minifig restrooms and realistic paper towels in their kitchens! While the set itself is nice, the recolored Technic panel is what will truly impact everyone in the LEGO community, since I imagine LEGO will begin using it in a lot more sets.

By in United States,

I actually suspect that the toilet is not directly connected to the sewage drain, since the photos show that the restroom is nowhere near the location of the drain. The drain is located at the bottom of a pillar in the middle of the bridge, while the restroom is on top of another building and in one corner. It's possible that pressing the lever activates two separate functions--flushing the toilet, and emptying the drain. If so, it would be easy to replace the reddish-brown tiles used for the drain with transparent-blue tiles, to represent treated wastewater instead of raw sewage. If this is true (if the tiles from the toilet don't actually drop down two stories, travel horizontally for the length of half a baseplate, then drop down another level), then it would put to rest everyone's complaints.

By in Netherlands,

I feel like people are disappointed by the wrong reasons...
People complaining about missing the old Asian style buildings - which are still there on the first floor. Look at that Torii gate and red bridge.
'It looks so empty' - how else do you expect that cable car to travel... Also I can see this being good for people who find the other sets to crowded.
'It's not that big/tall as previous sets' - That's also good for a change, and yet it's still 2 baseplates in length.

However I'm not sure why it's called Markets. And have some small nitpicks, but overall ai do think it fits perfectly with the other sets.

Ninjago City is my favorite set of all time: it was, and is, so colorful and innovative and unique, and it was the most fun and diverse building experience I’ve ever had, too. The Gardens are similar, but don’t have the honor of being the original groundbreaker.

It breaks my heart, but… this doesn’t wow me. I don’t really know why, and I really, really want it to, because I will always be chasing a repeat of the wonder that I feel for the first set… but I’m just not feeling it this time, sadly.

(I like the Docks too, although I think they work better next to the Old Fishing Store and other harbor things than either the original City or Gardens, for height balance and use of space.)

There are a lot of sets with 2 or more 32x32 baseplates but all the ones I list don't have the full 1024 studs due to being raised, roads, river, crater etc.

Space

497 : Galaxy Explorer
6970 : Beta I Command Base
6971 : Inter-Galactic Command Base
6987 : Message Intercept Base
6988 : Alpha Centauri Outpost

Airport
6392 : Airport
6396 : International Jetport
6597 : Century Skyway

Aquazone
6195 : Neptune Discovery Lab

Pirates
6277 : Imperial Trading Post
6278 : Enchanted Island

Town
1589 : Town Square
6390 : Main Street
1592 : Town Square - Castle Scene
6383 : Public Works Center
1590-2 : Breakdown Assistance
6391 : Cargo Center
6394 : Metro Park & Service Tower
6395 : Victory Lap Raceway
6500 : Holiday Village

But there are some Bricklink designer program sets on 2 full baseplates that :
910013 : Retro Bowling Alley
910023 : Venetian Houses

As far as I can find this is the first "official" set on 2 regular baseplates however.

10234 : Sydney Opera House does cover far more then 64x32 but technically does not use more then 1 32x32 , but uses 1 additional 16x32 and 48x48

I love the minifigure selection in this set! They finally made Cyrus Borg! Took them long enough. He's only been a key Ninjago character since season 3, basically the beginning of Ninjago since it now has 16 seasons...But I'm also glad they also main Gail Gossip the news reporter and the camera guy! They have been around since season 1! It's also cool to get detective Zane from that one episode in Prime Empire. I also new some new characters from the new Ninjago season Dragons Rising. And the build is great too! But I'm just so glad they finally made Cyrus Borg! Now make Borg Tower, one of the most wanted and needed Ninjago sets since 2013! Do it Lego!

Not sure on the show, but the movie(which the first two are based on) is set on an island.

By in United Kingdom,

I have been reflecting on this set (and went back to Capn Rex's review of Gardens which includes arranging it with City and Docks), Gardens has been on my wishlist since it came out but I have always been a bit on the fence about it. I have the City and the Docks so these would be the logical next step but I didn't quite have the same love for the Gardens. And not sure I have that love either for the Markets, or at least £300 plus of love for it. I should comment that this and the Gardens look utterly brilliant. I was struck by how well the Gardens and Markets seem to go together - so much so that it has ironically made me now think that I will stay with City and Docks (as the originals) which feel like an organically well matched pair. I look forward to the review(s) and it's really valuable to see the comments here but I think I will pass - there's a surfeit of other sets also vying for my wallet and attention.

It's 3/4 the price of 10316 Rivendell, but the same number of pieces & minifigs; is the licensing worth THAT MUCH?"

True there is licensing... But many forget that we got many new pieces created specifically for it. This doesn't appear to have any new pieces. Also piece types can also affect the price.

But regarding the flushing toilet...
Why are so many getting so worked up over it?
Firstly it's a great fun play feature
Secondly... It's Lego...
Thirdly Ninjago City is not in this realm
Fourthly poo go flush :-)

So why not embrace this amazing piece of engineering and enjoy the fun..? Just like the Lion Knight's Castle with its "poo-frog". It's all a bit of fun.

In the movie yes, which is why the first two sets have the water. The show has a different style Ninjago City. However, for consistency sake, they continued with the water. I don't mind it too much because it adds another difference between the Ninjago modulars and the regular line.

I've always wanted to expand the water onto some adjacent 32x32 plates to have room to dock the Ninjago Move Destiny's Bounty 70618 and have lots of smaller boats travelling around. Maybe now I could have 32x32's of water running between the four Ninjago modulars: City and Docks on one side, with Gardens and Market on the other... that could be a cool layout.

Each addition to the line has had significant price reductions at some point prior to retirement. I was able to get City and Gardens at 1/3 to 1/2 off. Then again, I ignored the sale on Docks right before it retired for many of the reasons you mentioned above. So, when I finally realized that I needed it, I had to pay 50% premium (a small price compared to its current value). I won't make that mistake again, and would give you the same advice. If you have the first 2, you'll be kicking yourself not to pick up the next 2. Just look at the old Modular line.

Happy building!
