40634 Icons of Play revealed
Posted by Huw,
Rakuten.jp has revealed a hitherto unknown set, 40634 Icons of Play.
The model comprises half a football pitch, a spectator stand, various other side-builds and 15 skin-toned minifigs, including football players Megan Rapinoe, Yuki Nagasato, Sam Kerr, and Asisat Oshoala.
View a picture of the box after the break and let us know what you think of the set in the comments.

I'm sure this will sell about as well as the fooseball table. Looking forward to getting this when it's deeply discounted.
"Sport"
One billion times better than the fooseball table lol.
It reminds me of the football sets from the turn of the century, https://brickset.com/sets/theme-Sports/subtheme-Football, and that's no bad thing. They were well received, IIRC.
Eh. Not my thing but I could see someone loving it. The hairpieces are good though
A full field was a necessity here. Certainly could’ve been accomplished at the $100 price point.
Also, since the set is called “Icons” of Play, icons like Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappé, Neymar, Salah, and others would’ve been appreciated instead of the peanut gallery in the stands.
I have zero idea what’s this but love the Octan print.

As this is in the 40XXX then it is most likely a gift with purchase set. Probably with a price threshold of around $250 CAD
Oh that explains the "sports scarf" on the VIP offers.
"Always root for the local sports team"
"GO SPORTS TEAM"
As someone who has seen hundreds of the old, green soccer / football 8x8 or 8x16 pieces with dimples in them, this tiled playing surface looks strange to me! And the colour variations thereon are by design, I hope!
The burning question is: where is Zidane?!
100% agree with Huw.
Anyone who knee-jerk compares this in a negative light to the foosball table is missing the point: it's a nice sports-themed City set. Automatically comparing it to a poorly-developed Ideas set based on a weakly tangential thematic connection is just silly.
From Lego it makes sense because I believe that they have sponsored women's football events before, and we've had the German national team CMF before for the World Cup.
It's sensible that this isn't an 18+ set, but it seems you get very little for the price, which isn't great for the girls it's aimed at.
Lego's strict adherence to gender equality doesn't work in this set by bulking out the crowd with men. I would've thought a crowd of women and children would've been a better design decision.
Icons of Hard Pass
I think it's great!
I did write to LEGO during the Women's EURO Championship 2022, saying that it was good to see them (LEGO) backing/sponsoring the tournament, however that I was disappointed that there was not a tie-in product. I suggested something like the Go Brick Me : Brickheadz with different parts for different teams/players. They thought it was a great idea and suggested I submit the idea through LEGO Ideas!
I'm pleased to see this anyway.
snagging this at like 20-30€. But it's extremely funny to see them basically selling the scraps from the unsold Table Football set.
Also I was confused at first that they got the license for the players but not the teams' licenses for the actual kits, but that's a very good thing bc if they did, I assume the price would triple
Looks bad
I must admit I'm struggling to see how the players actually 'kick' the ball in this? In the old sets from the early 2000s the players were on stands with springs so you could pull back and flick them almost Subbuteo style. These players look like they're on 2x2 turntables, which at best is going to hit the ball in a wayward direction?
I'm also amazed they went with so many tiles instead of a green recolour for the road plates. But I'm definitely not complaining at that one!
Oh, and enough of the Star Trek football kits already! They looked bad enough in the table football set, and no better in this!
Soccer battle pack!

It's a 406XX item, so it will be a Lego Store exclusive sold item rather than a GWP.
40630, 40631, and 40632 are Lord of the Rings BrickHeadz
40638, 40639, 40641, 40643, 40644, and 40648 are seasonal/holiday
40646 and 40647 are flowers
40649 and 40650 are Creator type
40651 and 40654 are postcards
If there are alternate faces and hairs to make two whole teams (across two copies), I'm in. I want to add a football pitch to my city and was planning to use the early 00s sets, but this is much neater.
I like how they didn't provide connection points as if you don't need to buy 2 sets to get one field.
However, cynicism aside, I think this will sell much better than the foosball table

I suspect the licensing costs for those players may have been slightly higher.
Great parts to pick up on BaP.
The generic 'sport' and 'football' signs evoke the skit from That Mitchell and Webb Look. I'm sure intentionally. It's got everything it needs for a playset, if the professionals are happy to play headers and volleys or knockout... although putting four professionals against a nobody in goal seems unfair.
I saw an article that priced it at 16,480 yen. No idea if that's accurate.

IMO it sends the message that men should also follow women’s football/soccer so to that end I find it a resourceful use of their gender equality adherence.
No wonder it was unknown, its a complete mish-mash of stuff. Why only half a football pitch? Crazy. This has 40% discount written all over it... and why release now instead of last year when there was an actual tournament on. Feels like they missed the boat on this one.

I was exactly reminded of those sets. I like the design of this modern set much better. Hope its price isn't obscene.
This is one soccerfootball set that might sell better in the USA than in Europe - our national women’s team has a history that’s leagues better than our men’s team. And soccer is one of the only sports in the USA that girls are basically granted equal opportunities to participate in at every level, basketball being the other.
So, I like it! It definitely reminds me of the late 90s soccerfooty theme.
I think this will be a great addition to my football LEGO sets of the early 2000s! This is cool. I don’t know about the confusing choice of name for the set, though …

The Women’s World Cup (the one that the players featured in this set will compete in) starts in July.

The original theme was way better. You could actually kick the ball. There were inserts for trick shots. Great sets! This new one is a sad imitation that doesn’t capture the magic of the original

The storefront mentioned is run by one of two companies operating LEGO brand stores. And they are known to sell items at the price points different from LEGO.com’s there. Some they sell at lower, more at a little higher.
So LEGO.com price could be from 13,980JPY-ish (same as 21339 ) to 19,980JPY-ish (same as 43225 ).
Anyway, as the release date is 2023-06-06, we will soon know.
EDIT:
Forgot to include my humble opinion.
For 899 pieces and license fee of four professional players, not that bad, I guess.
I'm super curious on the price. I like the diverse mini-figs, bleachers, seats and podium. The female players are cool. But the field seems unnecessary.
Don't get me wrong, the field looks great. However if my kids are enjoying this, the players will be scattered all over a table, the floor, possibly a baseplate. And the field is half of the pieces. Two goalposts & zones would make this more fun and probably more accessible price-wise, which you'd think would be part of the goal. Having another team would also make sense.
They listed to the feedback with 21058 and let you buy two copies to get a full soccer field.
I love it!
Where is everyone getting the price information, this article doesn't list pricing?

its probably going to sell well so you won't be getting deeply discounted anytime soon
I appreciate Lego finally diversifying their sets. For a way too long time the majority of sets were only with male minifigs with one theme with only female minifigs. There should be gender parity every time (in City, Friends and the rest), so every set could be for the boys and for the girls. Same with skin colors. Representation matters
Surprising that they didn't use mini-dolls for this set.
Looks more like an ice skating arena than a grass field which makes the whole set quite odd for playing. It's like a football Lego carrom field.

Agree. The comments are as if we were living in the 1950s or even earlier. No diversity that reflects our real world allowed as minifigs

Oh man, *thank you*
I was waiting to hear what your opinion of this set was!
So much gratitude here
These soccer player uniforms are garbage and they have wasted new print slots on all of them just so the licensed players can have their names on the back of uniforms they don't wear in reality and don't truly fit the style of the table soccer game because those parts lacked names.
I also bet the price will be unreasonably high for something that consists of mostly basic blocks. My estimation is between 80 and 100$. The concept is alright but with prices like this, what is the point of buying new sets when they are so similar to old sets or could be made with the parts library of the 90s? Only the skin tones and those can be bought separately anyway.
There isn't even a net in the goal.

The MAJOR differences is, this is only half a field and not playable like the old sets. This is a display piece that doesn’t even include a full field or opponent.
So… $200 for a full field.
Looking at their outfits it's more like Icons of the bench, or at best warm-up. And is it weird I only ever heard of one of those four players?
I still think Lego missed a big opportunity with their football related sets. I think they could have had much more success if they made the football table a lot cheaper with just 10 very basis minifigs, and then make a whole bunch of "battle packs" of various countries and clubs that can either be used on their own or be combined with the table. Pretty sure those would sell like crazy.
Wait, what theme is this under? Looks good tho.
lol
It's a great idea that looks nice a first. But it doesn't have the play features of 3420 or even a full field with borders to keep the ball in play. Then you realize that there are nearly as pieces used in the grandstands and side-builds as the field, which have increased the cost, so you lose interest. I really like it, but it's not as good as the original Sports sets.

Thanks for the update...it would make a nice GWP for the foosball table set...maybe it would entice people to but the set.
I’m stunned there are no play features. However, a Lego store exclusive probably means TGL doesn’t have confidence in launching a sports line. This set was done on the cheap (all stickers) so this is a” test the waters” product.
Trying to figure out what the play feature is
Is there meant to be some sort of playability here? The players are fitted on team-coloured stands with what looks like a white 2x2 inverted tile under each one. And you could theoretically play a bit like Subbuteo , where you flick the figures across the base board in order to then knock the ball around. But that relied on a weighted circular base for each player figure.
For that to work in this case the tiles on the base would have to be exceptionally smooth and level, and the 2x2 inverted tile would probably have to have some sort of Teflon underside to reduce friction and at the same time be heavily weighted so you're not just forever knocking the figures over instead of pushing them around. Having said that, LEGO don't seem averse of late to sets with play features that really don't work at all! (By which I'm looking at Duplo carousel gears and rip-cord City helicopters).

Those Sports sets were excellent, largely due to being genuinely playable as a table football game. This appears to imply playability, but I am dubious about the balance achievable by such a small lightweight base for each player. I’m off to try it out.
Overall it’s a likeable looking set

Pretty sure the 2x2 plate with two jumper plates set up is just so children can grab different figures faster without knocking them over all the time. Maybe for posing the figures in a kicking pose without falling over on the flat surface.
So will City and Creator minifigures be forced to get flesh colored heads now too? I see TLG doesn't seem to like their universal yellow people any more. Not diverse enough or...?
Why has that guy got a guitar?

Notice the crank on the side of the stands? It appears to make fans "jump" up and down. It might also change the scores on the scoreboard.
69 comments, lol!
…and I ruined it. :(
3420 was $50 for a full (much smaller) field WITH PLAY FEATURES, but no real players or logos so I think 3433 is a better comparison.
No offense to Rapinoe or the others I've never heard of (not a sports fan plus American so don't care about sOcCeR), but 3433 was $80 in 2003 (MAYBE $120 with inflation) and had a full basketball court and 10 IRL athletes including Kobe and Shaq (don't lump me in with the sexists please, I'm just saying Shaq and Kobe are legends and Rapinoe's the only one that comes close to comparing). Those slopes would've been expensive to produce and ate up the piece count but it's still a WAY better value
The foosball table ( 21337 ) was a failure despite at least 10,000 people wanting it and some great minifig diversity. The stadiums like 10299 crash and burn at least in the US. I can't see this selling well, even to the massive fans in Europe and Latin America.
I do love that it ALMOST looks playable like the sets from 20 years ago.
It looks a bit rubbish to me. Was it cobbled together in a rush to be ready for the women's world cup? I have heard of 1 out of the 4 icons, but even if this was icons of the mens game, the set would still look a bit rubbish. There are way too many figures in the stands compared to the pitch. Did they run out of time to get agreements from other female players?
Is it a display set? It doesn't look good enough for display.
Is it a play set? Half of it is missing, and the stands are a waste.

Those were more realistic. Or better, those were more like something I'd expect from a football set.

Named characters, so licensed and fleshies needed.
Additional images show the intended "game play" - grab the minifig and kick the ball with the base...
Again football players that neither wear shorts nor T-shirts, looks so wrong. Seriously Lego, dual moulded arms and legs have been around for almost 10 years now!
Weird seeing flesh parts in what is basically a city set, i wonder if they're considering doing away with the majority of the yellow figs?
@R0Sch said:

It would be weird to have light nougat for the IRL players and yellow for the audience. They've never put both in the same set AFAIK except in cases like Batman and Emmett, which itself is a meta joke and kind of the point, or Cloud City when they debuted Lando and still had a ton of yellow Han, Luke, and Leia heads

Also in some late-2000s Racers sets, such as 8144, 8144-2, and 8168 that have both “generic” yellow minifigures of pit crew, race officials, etc. and fleshtoned minifigures of real-life pro race drivers.

2023 FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP BEGINS JULY 20, 2023.
It's a set with licensed names, that's why they are flesh coloured. This isn't a City set, it's a one-off set, and they have done plenty of flesh coloured figures for real sporting people before.
They've done licensed minidolls for Disney before, I think they would've benefited from being mini dolls too, and would fit quite nicely into an extension of the Friends theme (even though it is a standalone set).
Seems like Lego missed a trick here because they could've started a girls sports theme here with minidolls and licensed the likenesses of various sportswomen.

Have they done minidolls of real people, though, or just minifigures? Perhaps there’s some internal policy against using minidolls for real people, for some reason. If nothing else, these will fit in better with the many, many minifigures of other real-life people they’ve done before (particularly the many sportspeople)…
Incidentally, in addition to Disney characters they’ve also done DC characters as minidolls.
why is it called icons of play

If that had US kits like the sets of old, I'd be really excited!.... Italy kits too. I already have the German team.
I’m not really seeing the appeal here. Come on lego you guys used to have original ideas. Get back to that instead of all these poorly designed sets that are only reliant on the minifigs.
This is a great looking set that's playable, has a decent selection of minifigs, and could easily be incorporated into a Lego City, but, once again, the retail price is absurd for what is basically half a five-aside football pitch. Like others, I'll be keeping an eye out for a healthy discount.
I never thought I'd say that the 2000's soccer bases actually looked good in comparison to something, but I'm saying that the 2000's soccer bases look better compared to this. The different shades of green tiles was a nice try, though.
The players' bench might fit in well in a display with some of those older sets, but everything else is too cartoonish. This might work in a display as a "practice pitch" or "fan experience area" on the outside of the real soccer stadium.
I think this would be a more interesting set with a Ted Lasso license, with minifigs representing characters from the show.
@ninjabiomech said:

The whoosh marks around the players and the inverted tiles make me think we can slide or flick them around the pitch to "kick" the ball. Like the old Subbuteo game
i'm fine with it, but it would have been cooler if the players' strips were better. They look like they're wearing jumpsuits
A good parts pack to go with the 50% off Fooseball thing I got.
Great to see an Aussie, Sam Kerr, in there!
I’ve always wanted a major return to the Sport theme, and while this isn’t it, it’s certainly better than nothing.
The 2000's football sets were much better.
Rumors suggest that the GWP for this set could be a polybag of famous American sports commentator Bill Burr.

Let's not get TOO carried away. The 'opportunities' for women and girls in soccer and basketball are better than most other team sports. But, "equal?" No, there's no equality. Not even beginning to be close. But, at least the Women's National Team finally achieved equal pay after many years of fighting, suing US Soccer, and the Men's Team taking a stand to say that failing to do so was sexist.
BTW, as a lawyer/US Soccer Fan who followed this intimately, it was probably the last bit that did the trick! Sad.

WATCH THE FOOTBALL! IT'S GONNA MOOOOOOVE!
5hey are all wearing the same kit, but the bases suggest red team vs blue team. Strange design.
Many possibilities of self creations with this one. And this can be used anywhere. Especially for those building a City with a City Park, or School, and so on. Many of the Collectible Minifigures I can use to make fun Teams of using things. Like Football Minifigures, but changing heads, and switching parts. Be a fun add.
Interesting little set, and an especially a good parts pack if you're into fleshies. Can't say it's up my alley exactly, as someone who's not a huge fan of football/soccer, but LEGO already made the A-Frame Cabin for me. :P
Separately, I'm pleasantly surprised by how chill this thread is. Relaxed, positive, discussing the possibilities, etc. The great thing about LEGO is being able to recombine pieces infinitely.
Hilarious that they're trying to sell all their extra stock with this. Not surprised. Definitely gonna look for the new parts on BaP.
Wish they had country specific jerseys.
Doesn’t look bad actually. This is certainly an improvement over Table Football and there’s a really good amount of minifigures. Only problem is that the set looks a little ‘busy’ and I would have preferred a full field instead of a podium or bench.

And it’s funny there was no complaint at the comment comparing men’s soccer to women, saying that men behave like dramatic animals, while women are graceful perfection. In before...I don’t get bothered enough to have the comment deleted, and am not calling for it, just funny that comments aimed at women should be deleted...but not the one disparaging men.
Lol got excited at first because I absolutely loved the sports sets from my childhood. But then I saw the people featured on closer look. Hard pass, expect to see it in the discount shelves in the back within two months of release
This one will end up at 50% off on LEGO.com in less than a year and it still won’t sell. Just like the Hulkbuster, Black Panther bust, foosball table and Queer Eye.
>No Kick system from 2000
>No Yellow faces
>You need to pay 2 for full field
What a joke.
Soccer sets would SELL SO MUCH nowadays, there is much more kids obsessed with football, and when I take my Lego soccer Stadium for events is always a hit and people want to buy it from me.

"...putting four professionals against a nobody in goal seems unfair."
More like three professionals and a political activist. In the US, during the 2022 Olympics, Rapinoe was constantly in the press (even when she was a spectator at other events), but her team's success always hinged on the rest of the world not caring one tiny bit about women's soccer. Now that this is no longer the case, the US women's team hasn't made it to the podium in years. Meanwhile, Rapinoe's wife got zero mentions, even though she's on the winningest team in Olympics history (US Women's Basketball, 70-3 record, 7 consecutive gold medals, no losses in 30 years). The difference? Rapinoe was very vocal about certain things that had nothing to do with soccer, while her wife just showed up and played basketball.

"Separately, I'm pleasantly surprised by how chill this thread is. Relaxed, positive, discussing the possibilities, etc. The great thing about LEGO is being able to recombine pieces infinitely."
Honestly, I think it’s just because the sexist/toxic comments are rightfully being removed.
You know, the same comments by the same people you see complaining about female figures in a Pac-Man set, Queer Eye etc etc.
@chrisaw:
There's female figures in the Pac-Man set? Do ghosts have gender? How can you tell without losing your life (or them losing...whatever it is that ghosts have)? What...oh, right. The minifig in the back.
So nobody else noticed the goalkeep play feature? If I'm not mistaken it looks like you can control her with that blue round thing behind the goal, I suppose to try to block the ball
I regards to the apparent split of Females on pitch/coaching, and males in the stand. It does look like there is a sufficient match in colours between the figures, and the torsos appear neutral enough that you could easily swap who is on the stands and on the pitch. Perhaps that is the intention and will be shown in the official announcement.
A proper return of Lego Sports would be welcome, not just one-off soccer sets that only appeal to fans of the one (admittedly internationally popular) sport. Considering the somewhat recent THPS1+2 video game remake was well-received, I think there's a market out there for tapping into more sports and activities again. The closest thing we have now to extreme sports sets are Stuntz and the occasional skate park in City or Friends, but more could be done.
Obvious designed by someone who never has seen a football stadium on the inside. The pitch with the wall around it reminds me more of indoor football then outdoor in a stadium.
Also the stand is way to high.
Box background, this looks like fake set.
I'm not a football fan, but even I think that this should have been a complete pitch, not half.
A shame this is such an own goal by LEGO.
Fresh idea, just not sure how practical to play with the ball falling off the edge all the time.
Strange none of the English team like Beth Mead are mentioned even though they won last years Women's Euro? For that matter where are the other European players like Alexandra Popp, with an Olympic gold metal etc.
Personally, an outdoor City Futsal pitch with mesh walls would be appreciated rather than another skate park.
Cute but I'd be more interested in a high school boy's soccer team expansion pack.
Where is my true ICON Vivianne Miedema?
Not a fan of football, but I like this set - especially the expressions on the mini-figs.
It's not even a half-pitch though, looks more like a third, and is closer in appearance to an ice-hockey pitch. Swap the green for blue-trans flat tiles and you'd have a cracking hockey diorama stage, compete with sin-bin - the goal is almost too perfect not to...

"It's a set with licensed names, that's why they are flesh coloured.
Seems like Lego missed a trick here because they could've started a girls sports theme here with minidolls and licensed the likenesses of various sportswomen."
If I had to guess, LEGO knows that there will be minifig collectors who want the players, and would be less interested if they were minidolls. There's clearly nothing of value in the set besides the hoard of minifigs.
"icon"?? I have never heard of those players. Should have been Maradona, Pele, Messi... Anyway I have just MOC'ed a big stadium around the full football field anno 2002 for my lego city, so I will pass. btw the 2002 sets were very playable, I just held a birthday party for my 9 year old and the kids loved to play it.
Reminds me of the old sets based on soccer, I hope that range sees a revival of sorts.
"...All the accessories required for that big match atmosphere
The crowd and the dugout, the floodlights too..."
Where's Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond?
(Lego does show up in that show in the second season onward in Ted's flat.)
What a strange set. Why does it look so much like a bootleg?

""...All the accessories required for that big match atmosphere

But where's the riot police? Fireworks? Stuff to throw at the players? Banners to provoke the opposing fans?
This is not a football atmosphere, it looks more like korfbal....
Ah, never heard of it, had to look it up. But pretty funny :-)
The song I always have to think about with football is Bommetje by BZB....
I do like football, but can't deny I've grown tired of some of the things you mentioned. Luckily we don't get too see that much of that side of football at TOP Oss, the one thing we excel at is losing.
It's not terrible, but I feel like if you removed the spectator stand to include the other half of the field and another team that'd be cooler
Yellow soccer ball for GBCs. Nice.
Do we know if the ball is standard soccer ball size and not the dreaded Zamor sphere?
Reminds me of the old early 2000s Sports sets. A bit before my time, but I did get a hand-me-down copy of 3422 when I was younger and had a lot of fun with it. Hope it doesn't end up being too expensive, I really want that Sam Kerr minifigure.

They literally came in 3rd in the Olympics, won the 2022 CONCACAF Championship, and won the 2019 world cup.
Not to mention they're currently betting favorites for this year's world cup (for whatever that's worth).
