Summer LEGO Movie sets

Posted by ,

A week or so ago several AFOL sites posted pictures of three TLM sets that are featured in The LEGO Movie The Essential Guide book. I refrained from mentioning them here until I could provide some decent pictures. I received my copy of the book today so I've posted scans of the appropriate pages on flickr.

The three sets are 70816 Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!, pictured; 70814, Emmet's Constructo-Mech? and 70815 Super Secret Police Dropship.

Hopefully the book will go some way to explaining why the sets are so weird and whacky before the movie comes out...

Wow. I will pass on the mech, but the police ship and Benny's ship are EPIC.

Johnny Thunder is also a welcome touch. My poor poor wallet..

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The "classic" spaceship looks really great.

And Benny the Spaceman appears to indeed have a cracked helmet. I hope they seized the opportunity and recreated the old original helmet mold as well.

By in United Kingdom,

a set for us mid life afols

Gravatar
By in Germany,

just W O W!!!
Fanastic Sets for Kids and AFOLs - great job LEGO!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

That's the second police set from the movie that looks insane. My poor wallet...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think we can all agree that that spaceship is a must-buy. Even if the movie sucks, it will all have been worth it for this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That will be nice if the mecha comes with the official alt vehicle mode :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

The spaceship is fantastic - a true blend of the sets I had when I was 7 and the sets my 7-year-old son plays with.

I like the mech, too - I hope that's a 2-in-1, though, or at least has all the necessary pieces to create the various construction vehicles that make up the mech.

By in United Kingdom,

I must owns.

I MUST.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Claasic Space ship! yes :D

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Does the Mech now rule out the Cusoo project? I would say yes, even though the design is different - the concept is the same.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

wow
so blue
much awesome!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is awesome. They did such a good job capturing the essence of the old-school space sets while still making it feel new and modern. The sideways castle arches for the exhaust vents are a nice touch.

I wonder how they'll deal with Benny's "broken" helmet (which is hilarious, by the way). Rubber helm?

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

That Super Secret Police Dropship is just begging to be assigned to the Imperial Armada.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Very cool sets.. Especially the mech!

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the figures appears to be wearing a helmet that resembles the ones found in the classic space series, if you look closely.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Weird and whacky? Weird and whacky!? These are the best sets ever! :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

In the movie trailers, Benny very visibly has an original space helmet with a broken chin piece. I think it's a humorous touch because anyone who has ever owned one of those original spacemen know how prone those are to breaking like that.

I was wondering how Lego was going to represent that in physical minifig form. It makes sense they would do the helmet in a flexible rubber mold so that the "broken" part isn't going to break further.

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Is there a homage to the set no. 6929 with the LL929 tempa on the ship ? :Oo

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice to have a somewhat classic themed set coming. Hopefully, we could get a return of Blacktron in a few years.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Love Benny's Spaceship, but I think it would be much cooler if they used no modern parts, just parts that were available in the 80's. If Lego had done that it would be a must-buy for me.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

I hope that this set leads to a Classic Space revival. I don't army build, but I would Army build classic space figs!

Gravatar
By in United States,

That dropship is awesome. I was originally planning on getting it purely for the Johnny Thunder minifig but it's nice to know the rest of the set is definitely worth it. This movie though, I'm so pumped about it.

By in Canada,

@marswatcher: No, it does not rule out the Cuusoo project. There have been dozens of mechs in the past, and this one is no closer to Pete Reid's than any other. Pete Reid's exo-suit would never have passed review f it meant the LEGO Group could not release a single other mech in the intervening time.

"Why the sets are weird and wacky"... well, I think that's obvious based on what we know about the movie. When the main villain is obsessed with making sure everyone lives their lives according to the narrowly-defined instructions, the best way for the heroes to fight back is with things that are "weird and wacky" and aren't constrained by what the parts are supposed to be used for.

Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, Spaceship! is a must-have for any fan of classic LEGO space, I think. Not only does it include Benny, but also Astro-Kitty! The captions also make me wonder if the Wyldstyle minifigure in this set will be unique.

The Constructo-Mech is a lovely design, though I'm sure many people will be disappointed if it's not a 2-in-1 set. It seems especially significant since it seems to be the first of the vehicles created by Emmet himself, and his lack of original ideas seems like it's going to be a plot point. So creating something as random as this is probably important character development. Also, I wonder if "Dual Wrecking Balls" is deliberate innuendo. Guess we'll find out when the movie comes out.

The Dropship is one of the most "normal" of the sets, since it's one of the tools of Lord Business's regime. It's pretty pure sci-fi/cyberpunk. The prison cell is heavily inspired by classic Space Police. However, it also has a touch of silliness — the giant decal proclaiming that it's a tool of the "SUPER SECRET POLICE". Really subtle, guys. =P

Overall, the summer lineup looks quite nice in general. I hope the movie measures up to the products that accompany it!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

". . . why the sets are so weird and whacky . . ."

Because Lego is a toy that's supposed to be fun?

And besides, I thought the point of the Lego Movie was supposed to be especially weird and wacky. I much prefer things like this to the sorts of soulless, "building technique" filled, sit-there-looking-pretty-but-collapse-if-you-touch-them creations you see at AFOL conventions and the like.

By in United Kingdom,

Although most of the decoration is stickers, it looks to me like Benny's spaceship includes 3 printed slopes with the Classic Space logo.

It also looks like about 500 pieces. I'm just glad it's a second wave release, my budget might stretch to it by then.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Put your hands together for Lego!

Benny's spaceship might not to be everyones taste but look at those "classic space" printed(?) bricks, the colour scheme, and the spaceship's number (LL929). That thing is surely a celebration (or a thank you) of 928 's status as a contender for best set ever.

Bet there will be many Dads sitting in theatres, who are no longer into Lego, thinking... "blimey, I used to have a set a bit like that!"

I'm surprised the set number isn't 70929 just to really milk it's potential? Classic space revival? Bring it on!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Awesome, good scans.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw, can't wait for a review... advance copy or did you find it in a shop?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ravnut - I honestly think they should have given it a 3-digit number, go for a real throwback.

I'm not sure what to think. The spaceship looks pretty good, and the dropship is very sleek. That mech, though. At 707 pieces, it clocks it at the second biggest robot/mech ever (correct me if I'm wrong). I can't tell if I hate it or really like it's design. Guess we'll just have to wait for reviews.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

The police dropship looks really awesome! I was ambivalent about the Lego Movie sets but these 3 have started to get me interested!

Gravatar
By in United States,

That nostalgia. LEGO knows what it's doing.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

So I wonder who'll be the first AFOL to build the spaceship from the photos....? ;-)

Gravatar
By in South Africa,

Huw could you mabye give us more pictures of the book please.:)

Gravatar
By in Australia,

My one issue is that the "classic" spaceship is really "classic" in name (and colour-scheme) only, because there's too many new and recent pieces.

It's still awesome, though. I like that Unikitty seems to be in *everything*.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Pseudo classic space.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Zordboy - That is true to a certain extent. Bear in mind that the image only shows the spaceship from one angle, so we'll have to wait until official pictures are released before judging the parts selection.

Also, it would be near impossible to replicate the design choices from the original Space models. Products undergo a vastly different R&D these days, and so a whole host of factors (from the available moulds to the strength of the model when it is finished) are taken into consideration.

The best way to view Benny's Spaceship is that it captures the spirit of the original designs, just as the 'Architecture' range does to the respective landmarks.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Lego is the only toy that I could tell my kids: Daddy had this when I was your age. And this space ship captures the essence as one of those classics. Modernised classics.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@LuvKernow, they'll probably be released when the new Argos catalogue is out, which should be on the 18th O:-)

Gravatar
By in Italy,

LEGO Movie themes is wonderful! My personal must-buy are ironbeard and Benny's spaceship!
I like a lot the police hoveer car, the humvee and the dropship...
And I love the windmill-copter, that I hope to build with my pieces... my wallet is empty this time :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm glad to see Space finally getting some attention. The movie looked like it would be mostly City & Western, which had made me slightly underwhelmed to see it, until now. But I'm happy to see this spaceship, even if it's bound to be a bit out of my price range. It looks like a nice tribute to Galaxy Explorer (as well as 6985 and 6931)!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Let's hope this leads to a Neo-Classic Space line!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

At least six of the new 2x2 round "doughnut" tile on the spaceship - including two in black it would seem! And either side of Astrokitty are some small looking elements which seem to have the grey/dark grey diagonal split of Power Functions elements - and red lights on the front?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really like the looks of this set, although it's to bad Benny won't be easily available in large quantities for Classic Space collectors. Being able to get a big group of brand new blue space men bodies would have been great. I was really hoping to see a Classic Space man in the movie minifigure set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

darktremere the blue spaceman bodies with the new style helmet have actually been quite readily available the past year or so in the Minifigure Presentation Boxes set 850423, which although orginally US$9.99 was sold as cheap as $2.48 at LBR & LEGO.com ( http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=850423-1 ). I got no less than 10 of these so far, they're great for big windows & frames as well as the spacemen.

What I think might be even more intersting that I found the other day is an American Heart Association PSA featuring Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks has been involved with them before) that shows.... a WHITE CLASSIC SPACE MINIFIG!!!!!!!!!! @bmwlego noticed it at about 25 seconds http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xkqJUUcu_lst=25

By in Canada,

@Zordboy: I kind of disagree. Even though it couldn't be mistaken for a set from the actual classic space theme, it's exactly like what you'd get if a classic space set were to be designed today. After all, even the classic space sets themselves never hesitated to make use of parts that were new or trendy for their time.

It utilizes the new greys instead of classic light grey, sure, and it has lots of modern parts. But its "classic" appeal goes beyond color scheme — it is heavily inspired by the visual language of the classic space sets. It has a similar "flying wedge" shape to classic LEGO spaceships, something that probably hasn't been seen to this degree in a non-licensed theme since the 90s. More recent spaceships, especially the giant flagship models, have typically opted for stranger and more futuristic designs.

It also uses lots of sharp angles, including incredibly angular cockpit glass (contrast the curved cockpit glass typical of the Galaxy Squad, Alien Conquest, and Space Police themes). There are a handful of curved slopes, but they are not the model's defining motifs. The robots in front of the engines are also a serious classic space throwback, even if they use the modern 1x1 slope elements.

Overall, I think this model might actually be more "classic" than a lot of "Neo Classic Space" MOCs, which ARE occasionally "classic" only according to their name and paint job.

By in United States,

Stevolteon, those are the new spring loaded missile launcher elements.

Gravatar
By in United States,

swoosh! Swoosh! SHWOOSH!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

anyone else looking at Benny's Spaceship and thinking it won't be too difficult to switch out the dark gray plates for light grey plates :) Dark grey didn't exist in the early sets I owned... and the light grey are often pieces I snatch up when purchasing through bricklink.

Guessing I'll have to purchase two of Benny's Spaceship, as an unopened version of this one will be going up in my office at work!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@murphquake....thanks for the info, I'll have to keep an eye out for some of those, I wish I had a LBR closer than 3 hours away though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Even though I was born more than half a decade after Classic Space ended, I love the look of this set. It combines the style and color scheme of Classic Space with modern parts and building techniques in an amazing way.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks like the wingtips are small flying crafts.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, and here I thought 2014 was going to be a lean year. I see I was very, very wrong... Such Classic Space goodness!

Gravatar
By in United States,

That ship... is beautiful. A must have for me. And I was born WAY after Classic Space was on the shelves!

Gravatar
By in United States,

For some reason I can't resist anything labeled a Dropship or Gunship. Must...have...now!

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I was born in the ERA of the blue spaceship. Used to own one! Confirm a MUST HAVE on my list!
