How many people buy these anyways? I can't imagine spending over 200 eurobucks on display units, I just get the figures I like off bricklink or at my lego store. Is this an "investor" thing?

Groups of people buy boxes between them to guarantee getting a set of figures each.

These aren't display units. They are the display boxes that stores put out. Each display box contains 36 minifigures. So you're basically paying €3.29 for each of 72 minifigures. That should be six complete sets you could then split with your friends (for example).

Only one of my friends and one of my colleagues is into brick building at all, yet none of them care about minifigs. And even I rarely collect more than a few specific ones I like per series, if at all. I did buy a display box once or twice years ago for CMF series I did like more than others, but I'm still stuck with dozens of leftover figures I have no use for. Perhaps I'll offer them for sale at our internal company online marketplace to judge the interest of colleagues I might not yet know the secret hobby of.

Has anyone done this before? Do they add VAT on for UK purchases or will that get added on by DHL or equivalent?

These days there are a whole number of full sets in a box and you can sell them as such, whereas years ago the distribution of figs was not even. Less risky I would say?

I've always wished I had a couple friends that were into buying and building but not into minifigs. I would happily "discount" their purchases by buying all their minifigs off of them. Then again maybe it's good I don't have my own personal minifig dealers.

Why won't they print a code on the box?

So that people in brick and mortar stores will buy figures they don't want while trying to find the ones they do want. When they were $2.50 each I'd buy as many were in a set, then come back and feel the bags to fill in for any duplicates. Now they have switched to boxes, and I will only be buying complete sets from MinifiguresPlus. I expect to see a LOT of open boxes at Target when these hit the shelves.
