Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 23
Posted by CapnRex101,
I think the minifigures have rescued this Harry Potter Advent Calendar to some degree, as the bench revealed on day 22 was another relatively disappointing model.
I hope for better today...
Our second Christmas tree arrives today, including one more layer than the near-identical model from day ten. Both yesterday's bench and this Christmas tree feel like dubious attempts to fill the Advent Calendar, although the tree has the advantage of some visual appeal, at least. I do like its colours and the texture of the lower branches, contrasting nicely with the smooth snow on top.
Overall - Including two almost identical models is frustrating, but this Christmas tree looks quite nice and improves upon its counterpart from day ten.

Bah, humbug!!
I really quite like this AC. But, this is indefensible, especially when we got two trees in one day in 75981.
Return of the tree-venge of the rocket-tree: 2: the sequel: elec-tree-c boogaloo
Now with a percentage of more tree! Guaran-tree-d!
(The world is not ready for the tree-quel, so that'll be it for this year)

75981 was a pretty good advent calendar!
I hope the 2024 calendars up their game, usually my family buys all of them, but after this year we have decided to only get Friends and City next year.
Hard not to feel like this is a bit of a swizz given the near identical tree we got earlier. Could have done with more than just a single extra tier to distinguish the pair
I found this looks a bit awkward at the base, due to the use of four 1x1 plates to beef up the lower tier creating gaps at the corners. Swap out two of them with jumper plates, and it’ll help fill in the unsightly notches.

And it gave us four days of House banners. Not fancy printed ones, but just color-coded pennant flags, mounted on a pole. Every HPAC has had some weak days, but the minifigs and exclusive printed parts stand out above the rest, and the way the 2019, 2020, and 2023 HPACs form cohesive scenes is both a welcome change from 24 Days of Random, and unfortunately part of the reason we end up with stuff like House banners, streetlights, and benches that feel more like part of an accessory pack to Winter Village than Advent Calendar models in their own right.
Yikes. They could at least have used the new designs with the Trolls flower pieces that Friends has been using. Get some interesting pieces out there. This is not penultimate day material.

To be perfectly honest, I mostly used the builds from the 2019 HPAC as accessories to my Winter Village, but they were genuinely awesome. The figures and HP specific builds were really cool as well, even though I have little connection to the source material.
@ToysFromTheAttic:
Yeah, I could see that. Other than the House banners, it was full of generic wintery/Christmasy stuff. I ended up with 11 copies myself. I skipped it at first, but grew to understand what they were doing while reading Advent Calendar posts, so I got one copy two weeks in and built three days at a time over Days 17-24 (interestingly, this resulted in one minifig each day except the third, since it came with seven minifigs). Then I got an idea for an eventual Hogwarts-themed park, and got ten more copies when it had hit deep clearance. I kept all the Architect statues, but nine sets of the students/faculty minifigs went into a deal to land me an X-Mas Wing. The main thing I was after was the trees, which I ended up with 30 to devote to this project. I may have to consider incorporating the street lamp into the design somehow. Maybe.
