More 2024 Technic sets revealed
Posted by Huw,
Images for eleven Technic sets due for release early next year have been published by the German retailer JB Spielwaren.
It's an electic mix of mini models, buggies and racing cars and, most notably, four space sets, some of which are based upon real-life prototypes and others which are fictional.
The most interesting is the orrery, 42179 Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit, which is unusual in that it's a rare example of a Technic set that's not a vehicle, although I see that the designers still managed to sneak some wheels in!
I've added pictures of the most interesting models after the break, and of course you can see them all in the database.
42167 Mack LR Electric Garbage Truck
42168 John Deere 9700 Forage Harvester
42178 Surface Space Loader
42179 Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit
42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81

Yes the orrery is definitely different and a welcome change.
I love the John Deere theme carried on into 2024, I'm hoping for a larger tractor or something agricultural later on in the year
I really like the orrery, just because of that gorgeous Earth design ... but, not being a Technic builder, I have absolutely no idea what I'd do with it.
I Hope someday that Technic will go become a cartoon series soon!
No B-models.
Yeah, really.
RIP Lego Technic B-model 1977-2023. I am so done with modern Technic. Which is a pity, since they seem to have done a change of tune this year with some non-licensed and more functional sets.
At least the new Creator wave looks fantastic and will provide me with some rebuilding fun.
That Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit is dreadful, a massive amount of Technic bulk around a small Earth and Sun. Worst Technic set in years.
Aside from the great looking space themed sets, the smaller models again are more appealing imo. The McLarens don’t appeal that much to me, despite being massively car interested. They’re not really part of any Motorsport I actively follow.
While not looking that exciting, I believe the Mack will carry loads of simple functions. Nice to see that. And at a decent size too. The John Deere looks nice, albeit it being due to a heavier use of System bricks. Wheel arches, roof, seat, and so on.
I’m not a fan of them removing 2 in 1 options but at the same time, honestly, were the majority of the alternative models really that good? No I’d say, just a few home run hits once in a while. Regardless of there being alternate builds, the community will still put out a great amount of own creations, many of which better than any alternate 2 in 1 would have been.

The gearing can be quite complex to achieve the correct rotations between each planet, which is probably why it may look over complicated

That's not an excuse on TLG cheaping out on the development of B-models. Moreover, unofficial alternate builds tend to be either lower quality or not free.
The best is clearly yet to come.
Forever optimistic :-)

No I agree, I’m just saying personally, it’s not something I see preventing me or the majority from buying these. It’s clear they’ve been phasing out the 2 in 1 concept for technic and it doesn’t seem to have affected anyone significantly.
Unofficial alternates I think in many cases do look better when it comes to larger sets. It is harder to find decent alternatives for the smaller, let’s say sub 50 sets. True that some ask money for the instructions, I’m just mentioning them as inspiration for anyone to create their own alternative builds.
Those Space themes tho...

Lego Technic have clearly listened to critics saying the range was too focussed around licensed cars so kudos to them for mixing things up a bit. Orrery looks interesting and I applaud the return of fictional machines, gives me a late 90s/early 2000s vibe (Competition, Cybermaster etc.), I’m just not sure about the execution yet.
The John Deere looks pretty good, not so sure about the Mack though. As for the small sets, the Bulldozer looks like a winner and I'm still curious about the Perseverance polybag. Not really a fan of how the Off-road Buggy looks (and all of the stickers....), but it does seem to pack quite the bit of functionality for such a small set, just as a Technic set should.
I guess the McLaren Extreme E will be a pullback car? Which would also mean the end of the Monster Jam sets? Dare I say that would be a shame? Wonder what the 42165 is gonna be....
And obviously still like the orrery and the Kawasaki, but we had already seen those before.

LEGO exclusive pullback would be my guess.
If you swap out the earth for the death star in 9676 and the sun for alderaan 75011, then you can recreate then infamous scene.
The space sets look like... I can't remember what it was called or even which one it specifically was, but one of those "build cool robots!" construction systems. That's not really a plus or a minus, just a vibe.
A little disappointed with the look of the orrery, the earth and sun just look plasticky and not a patch on the snot built versions on JB Brickworks orrery MOC. The base is also a bit odd. However, as others have said it is great to see something new in the Technic lineup.......
Really curious to see the other side of the Mack... how much of the lifting arm tech from the model rejected from the Ideas submission will it incorporate? The operation sticker seems like there's something...

Thinking of LEGO's own build cool robot toys, maybe Hero Factory? Or Slizer/Throwbots?
The orrery is a day 1 buy for me, without shadow of a doubt. I hope they've got the maths right and the rotation periods are all correct, but even if they haven't, the Earth pieces will enable me to make my own design look the part at last!
@MegaBlocks Don't think I could disagree more tbh - if you've ever tried to design an orrery, using only the existing Technic gears, it's not easy. My first run used a stupid number of gears, and even with them the sidereal rotation periods weren't exactly right. I'm surprised there isn't more gearing bulk in it than there is. As for 'worst technic set in years', you can't have followed much technic since 2018 or so...

Ok, the Mack just skyrocketed up my list after seeing more pictures elsewhere. This little gem is packed with functions, including a similar grabber function to the Ideas submission!
I like the harvester and recycling truck. On the fence for the orrery because I'm already assembling a wood one.

It's at the top of my list too. I like how well the Buggy, Garbage Truck and Harvester mimic the function of the real machines on which they are based.
1 minute silent for Technic B-Model
1977 - 2023
I am pretty sure i will eventually own 42181 (as well as all the other 'Space Technic'). I am also pretty sure I will 'initially' enjoy the 2 or 3 functions it offers and then it will fade. But imagine getting this at 8-10 years old? 8-10 years old me would go completely banana over a set like that. Back in the days, I migrated from 'Classic Space' to Technic - some early creations were using parts of both but back then I though red spaceships (I had 853) did not look the part.
I think there is a little bit too many sets that I like in the 2024 line-up. Difficult choices ahead because unless I inherit or win the lottery, there is no way I can buy all of them.
@Huw
I assume Huw won't be much of a fan of these sets as it seems 2024 Technic sets use quite a bit of 'System' parts.

Why is that? It is not in the original post. Is there an official post on this somewhere?
Usually the smaller sets had B-models, but the booklet has been gone for a while.
I do like the new sets, they have a bit more classic Technic feel IMO.
