Following LEGO's clever April Fools' Day joke, two sets based on Illumination's upcoming film Despicable Me 4 have officially been revealed!

Here's the press release:

Billund, Denmark, April 3, 2024: Today, the LEGO Group, Illumination and Universal Products & Experiences are confirming that they are in fact partnering on something new - although not a giant Minion, as a recent April Fools post on social media would suggest. To celebrate the July 3 release of Illumination’s Despicable Me 4, the newest chapter in the biggest global animated franchise in history, the partnership is launching new LEGO Despicable Me 4 sets.

The new range of four products includes two sets that were revealed in a sneak-peek video clip today. The first set is the LEGO Despicable Me 4 Minions and Gru's Family Mansion with its iconic architecture and beloved movie items, such as the red couch, fireplace and rocket-style bedroom, as well as a brightly colored tree house. The second set is a Brick-Built Gru with dancing Minions– complete with a ukulele-playing Mel and Kevin, armed with his fart gun. Fans will need to wait a bit longer for the unveiling of the entire lineup and hidden easter eggs.

The LEGO Despicable Me 4 products will be available from May 1, 2024, via LEGO stores, lego.com and from select leading retailers around the world.

Both brands hope the DM4 sets will spark imagination and create unforgettable creative experiences for fans around the world with the well-known Despicable Me characters.

“Using the LEGO brand’s creativity and endless possibilities, this partnership between Illumination, Universal Products & Experiences and the LEGO Group celebrates fun storytelling. Fans told us they were really missing LEGO Minions and we are happy to bring this world of mischievous fun back to them, through exciting new play experiences. We hope the new sets will delight any fan – small or big!” says Solvita Akmene, Designer at the LEGO Group.

“Illumination’s Despicable Me franchise is beloved by fans across the globe, and our partnership with the LEGO Group brings together two iconic brands,” says Rafael Macias, Executive Vice President & Global Commercial Officer, Universal Products & Experiences. “The LEGO Despicable Me 4 sets offer new storytelling opportunities and provide imaginative ways to bring to life the joy, action and sweet-but-subversive humor of this record-setting franchise. We’re as excited as the fans for Despicable Me 4 and can’t wait for their reaction to the new film-inspired LEGO sets.”

By in United States,

I will see that Gru in my nightmares.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I see stickers affixed across multiple pieces for the minion's faces. I thought Lego moved away from that mistake long ago?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Pretty nice sets by all accounts.

That Gru minifig is begging for a molded head or Pinocchio style nose though.

That round element they are on is one piece.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm not sure about Gru's head/face on the dancing set. For me, it's close but no cigar.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really think brick built Gru’s eyes could have done with fewer lines and wrinkles, because they are straight-up haunting in their current state

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Both quite nicely done sets. I do not like stickers for mouths though

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Turns out, April Fools is not over yet...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The collaboration between "TLG, Illumination, and Universal Products & Experiences" gives me hope for a Sing theme.

Gravatar

“Lego’s clever April Fools Day joke”? Must have missed that one.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Nothing against the sets, but.... that Gru head.... it's despicable. But not in a good way. It looks nothing like the character and just friggin weird and some might even say creepy.

Nice parts in the Gru house set, like that bamboo.

I do wish the Minion fad would end though. They are so overrated and really not funny.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

They did amazing job on house, but the figures...They dont even look right. I dont mean the noses, I mean the hairpieces. Only Margo looks good.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Again, lego relies too heavily on printing for their brick-built figures

Gravatar
By in France,

wow that's very disapointing to say the least

Tramp STAMP.

It does appear that the stretched-Kevin fig has a tramp STAMP. It could be just the usual crappy Lego promotional graphic design. But, that would mean three separate crappy stickers.

Or- dare I say- three well-printed pieces???!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's nice that they finally made some of the human characters, but what the heck did they do to the Minions? Is that ball supposed to be Otto? Why do the other two have five-o'clock shadows?

Gravatar
By in United States,

That brick built Gru is already haunting my nightmares. I liked the Minions sets a few years ago and I’m excited to see the rest of these, but so far I’m a little disappointed. The mansion set doesn’t look like it’s worth $100 at all given how shallow that build is and stickers for all the Minions’ mouths in the other set feels like cutting corners.

Gravatar
By in United States,

the House being $45 more with only 30ish more pieces is crazy

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

I hate minions even more, than C-3PO and Jar-Jar together.

There's definitely something weird with the render here. Look at the tall minion - that's definitely multiple 2x2 round bricks, and the print/sticker piece seems weirdly unnecessary given it's yellow, on yellow. I think it's an issue with the image, rather than the design - I see no reason for that print/sticker to extend beyond the bottom brick where the smile is.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really like the house shaping and I must have missed the tree house canopy element if it isn’t new - that looks really useful. At that price point though there are plenty of other sets both myself and the nippers would rather have.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Are they doing film mash-ups?
Because Gru looks like he's taking a shortcut through Inside Out's abstraction

Gravatar
By in Australia,

And I thought Kingfisher was worst set of the year…..not anymore

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Am I the only one who finds Minion utterly annoying?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I checked my nephews DM sets, and none of them have sticker mouths, why do these??

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nothing says lightning rod for AFOL tears like a Minions themed Lego set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That brick-built gru looks kinda creepy. His eyes seem... swollen? The new Minions also remind me of stuff from Citizen Brick. Maybe it’s the elongated head.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Okay.... I need to go bleach my eyeballs. That brickbuilt Gru is hideous. Whoever approved that needs firing.

Both of these are terrible sets imo. Poorly done minions that are sticker heavy, bad and inaccurate designs... As for the pricing? Yeeshh... I thought Disney Tax was getting bad with the Star Wars stuff. Both of these should only be half the asking price again.

And I say all this as someone whose loved all the Despicable Me and Minions movies. I won't be buying these monstrosities.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Interested in seeing how that brick-built Gru looks "in the plastic" as such - I have a sneaking suspicion the render's making the face look wonkier than it actually is, the shadowy gaps above and below the nose especially.

Aside from that, though... yeah, they're alright innit? Not amazing but not awful either, dunno if I'll pick either one up but appreciate their existence all the same.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Those Gru eyes... they... are... WHY!?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Hate to say it, but I much prefer the DM sets from MEGA from a couple of years back, when they had the license. Their figures in particular look so much better imho.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I, for one am really excited about 75583 Minions and Gru's Family Mansion.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Those Gru eyes are too detailed and make the whole thing really creepy. A shame, as I love the detail on the minions, particularly the fruit hat!

And I love the house and that minifigs of the girls are included, but the Gru and Lucy minifigures don't work. Maybe if they had the Toy-Story type longer legs? But a plain minifig head just doesn't work for Gru.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Brick Built Gru with Minions will display perfectly with 75371 Chewbacca.

Yes. That's sarcasm.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@navamac said:

Each eye is on a single piece, each mouth is on a single piece, and the torso is printed on a single piece. What are you seeing?

Unless you meant the smaller minions in the house set? There's only one that has a design across more than one part and the line between each part is clearly visible, so not a stamp.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Buildable Gru is straight-up the most cursed LEGO set I've ever seen. Not even 76282 can compare to this piece of nightmare fuel!

Gravatar
By in United States,

MY EYES!!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Don’t know who the actual Minions are in this. The wide one only has one eye, and the other two are bald, so they’re not the ones from the two Minions films. Not-Stuart and Not-Kevin look like they had a matter transporter accident with Homer Simpson, and Notto looks like he had one with a beach ball. The lines around the mouths don’t look like stickers, plus why would they even need stickers spread across three parts for Not-Kevin when the mouth is only on the body? I suspect those lines are printed, and you’re supposed to remove the middle section first, to show that his head is stretching the same way his arms so clearly have.

They seem like printed pieces to me. The difference in the yellow tone between the pieces and the printed portion looks so weird though. Will Lego ever be able to fix that issue and finally start printing colors that actually match the piece colors?

Gravatar

75582 is a truly despicable set

Gravatar
By in United States,

Despicable, me thinks.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

In case anyone is wondering where one of the images has gone, we have been asked to remove the image of 75583 Minions and Gru's Family Mansion. I imagine this is probably because it features an as-yet-unrevealed character from Despicable Me 4, although I am not sure. Hopefully we can add an updated image soon.

The image is a render, so you can't really conclude anything from it.

Seems very odd when literally every character has been seen in the trailers for the movie, other then the minions.... But, they do seem to have an M logo, rather then the usual G. Maybe its to do with that?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh boy I do not like Gru's eyes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That display looks pretty good! Aside from Gru's eyes being nightmare fuel... I was wondering if we were going to see the reindeer CMF antlers again, and we have them in green now! The mansion I unfortunately missed the pictures for, but I'm sure someone still has them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@CapnRex101:
None of the Minions were the main characters from Minions 2. One was overly plump, one was super stretchy, and the other had a red lens on its eye. But they’re still basically just _Minions_, so nothing crazy like the purple ones from DM2. The only other new character was the baby, and he’s featured heavily in the marketing so far.

Anyways, should have saved copies of both, just because of stuff like this. Not blaming you guys, and it’s not even TLG that’s behind this. It has to be coming from the studio.

The green antlers were also in the Friends Advent Calendar last year.

Yes - the new Mega Minions have not been revealed yet. I've seen a leaked still of them and it can be found on Google but it's some sort of big surprise I guess. I'm sure a new trailer will drop imminently and show them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have no words for gru! Except for yikes! Wait I know someone stuck his head in a blender!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

75582 Brick-Built Gru and Minions is a definite contender for worst set of 2024.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm seeing a lot of criticism for Gru's head, but I certainly don't remember a human character looking so immediately recognisable at such a small scale before... Obviously it's imperfect (it's made of LEGO!), but I actually thought Gru looks pretty decent.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really didn't think Lego could make more ugly sets after Chewbacca and Dobby... but I was wrong.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The house, from the outside, looks like it could go in Hogsmeade. It has the high-pitched roof and muted color scheme of their buildings. I might just have to look at the instructions someday to see if I can add a back to it as well. ...and maybe second floor. (if I felt daring!) If I did get the set, I'd sell the figs for a quick buck to recoup costs, of course.

Doing a bit more research, seems your right. Looks like they got leaked on a board game box too. Believe they're going to be some kind of 'super powered' minions.

edit: Looks like this is 100% the reason. Theres still some images up of the house in various places, but they don't show the minions, so seems it leaked the Mega Minions with the other images, hence the takedown orders.

Are you saying that the printed yellow should have matched the piece yellow? ....why would they print that? Surely the printed yellow section is intended to be a different color?

Also, these definitely aren't STAMPs. We can clearly see the gaps between the pieces.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

After that Supersized Tim this is rather underwhelming....

Gravatar
By in Canada,

All of the comments pretending that specific minions are distinct characters with their own names are pretty funny, even if they're a bit late for April Fools' Day.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks like Gru's eyes are printed, but designed to be rotated; they have a crease above and below, and the pupil off to one side. In that picture one is rotated 180° compared to the other, so instead of looking left or right, he's slightly cross-eyed. The gap above the claw nose looks bad too, especially directly aligned with the printed eyebrows. And the head just has straight sides Someone could at least have attempted a domed shape; some curvature at the sides when viewed face-on.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Alot of people on here complaining about Grus head. I think its a quite a good effort by the designers, and I applaud them for brick building the head. There are too many specialized molds in my opinion, and if you want everything to be specialized molded pieces then perhaps Lego is not for you.

That's how they did it in the tie-in episode of the Simpsons, "Brick Like Me." There are some "un-Lego" details like printed ears and noses, but I don't think they looked bad at all. I might prefer them to the physical versions, even.

There’s also the fact that they’re from rival animation studios.

@Rabrickzel:
Let’s be honest, here. Gru comes free with a four-pack of large Minions.

@legomaster65:
I would have figured Toy Story, though this does have two more feature films, and several times as many shorts. In terms of merchandising on top of box office, Cars was a strong contender for a while, and Frozen is probably still going strong (you’ll know when that one has petered out because Disney will add Anna and Elsa to the Disney Princess lineup).

Wrong Minions. The larger Minions definitely each have one sticker for the mouth, on one 4x4 round brick. The question is if the minifig-scale Minions, previously shown with the house, also have stickers for their mouths, and if one in particular has a sticker across three parts. That side of the photo showed something the studio wanted kept secret for the time being, though, so the full image got yanked, and a redacted version that only shows half the model went up instead.
