C-3PO

The first image of another new Star Wars set has emerged on The Brick Shop, based in Singapore: 75398 C-3PO!

Fans have discussed the possibility of a large-scale rendition of C-3PO for many years, matching other droids produced before, but myself and many others doubted it would happen. After all, Threepio would need a huge number of pearl gold or metallic gold pieces, which seemed impractical.

However, the model is finally here and I think it looks excellent on the whole, seemingly matching the scale of 75379 R2-D2. The piece count has not been confirmed, but the price of $229.90 SGD is the same as 75337 AT-TE Walker, so I presume this set will cost about £119.99, $139.99 or €139.99 when it is released, likely in August.

What do you think of this C-3PO design? Let us know in the comments.

Looks good. The price is steep and I would have hoped for metallic gold pieces in stead of pearl gold. Also, the use of dark tan plates/pieces is a bit off…

And why stickers at the belly since there are also prints in the face and belly?

I like how some of the flaws in the gold pieces make it look like he is suffering from metal fatigue lol.

That silver leg is an iconic part of C-3P0!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Pulled it off better than they did Chewbacca, poor guy looked like a melting chocolate ice lolly. Lego definitely fared better with mechanical detail

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Not bad, on the whole, but that face is a horror show! Surely they could've come up with a less haunted option?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’m sorry, but at this scale I’ll only be happy if the head opens up to allow the minifigure to act as a pilot. I have been spoilt by 40649

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks great to me but absolutely no way is that worth $150. I saw a piece count of ~1100 somewhere so yeah, really overpriced. Not surprising whatsoever though

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ah, from the leaked image the other day it looked like Gold Ink, but the plain Warm Gold is alright; thankfully there's enough of it. There's no way it's actually proportional to this year's R2-D2 so I'll wait on a proper photo of them together to judge whether it should share a shelf. Otherwise, it looks like "Construction/Buildable Figures" now have a solution for sticking four fingers on a 2 stud wide area and a somewhat more affordable reissue of the UCS minifigure is welcome.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Woulxnt buy it but looks like a nice build. I think they could have also make mouth brick built too with all the new pieces.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

Is that the same C3P0 from Luke's speeder? I does have the dual molded leg at least!
If so I am pleased.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Does this scale with the Darth Malek R2-D2 and Chewbacca?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@merman The limited number of new parts they could introduce in the Star Wars budget probably also has to cover some of the warm gold parts in here, so they (pretty wisely) prioritized the major metal details for prints (which also happen to be on gold parts, which have further color matching difficulties) and had the wires at the waist be stickers (which don't eat up budget and a builder not applying them would still leave a generally acceptable model).

If this set is $140 I'd be surprised. So to say that the price is steep when I reckon it will be about $180!

But Lego could announce a £10 set with 1,000 piece count and people would still be criticising it for being expensive.

By in Poland,

UCS EXCLUSIVE MINIFIGURE THERE!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

just under the head on the top of the chest that looks like something I can modify to be a mech. Giant scale Threepio!!!!

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Why not drum lacquered gold pieces instead of theese warm gold/pearl gold pieces? The other way it could have been looked way cooler.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

It looks so damn cool! My second favourite brick-built character, behind 75381.

Too bad my wallet say nuh-uh.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I'm glad the UCS minifigure is included!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks great and I love that it is in scale to R2 that came out earlier.

Do you think so? I actually thought he looks about the right height. R2 is actually pretty big compared to a human, since he had to fit an entire human inside the costume! The new one looks pretty decently-scaled next to the big Chewbacca at least.

Also how long before someone attaches 75398 to the back of 75371?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Might even get this one. With Yoda, R2-D2 and Darth Vader's Helmet that will be 100% of my Star Wars interest satisfied!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Not my thing, but it's a decent rendition. Certainly better than that creepy Chewbacca from last year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Like any fan, I would've preferred gold ink. But, lego is about profit.

The Nexo shield for the nose/mouth is lazy and ruins the look of the face. Surely, a more creative solution could be found that captures the essence of his aspect.

On the whole, it's ok. Yet, there's only so many display pieces a person can own. I'm real close to my limit.

Will be fine waiting for a deep discount.

Many people miss it because his legs are not that interesting (at least not to normal people...) but I'm glad they included it.

@Anak said:

Drum lacquering adds a bit of thickness to the pieces and that leads to quick deterioration of painted area if it is under stress. That's why lego uses this technique almost exclusively to pieces with no studs, and if studs are inevitable then such piece is on the top layer. This means creating a whole drum lacquered exterior of such model is almost impossible.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So glad to get the overmold-leg C-3PO in a cheaper set, especially since 75341 is retiring at the end of this year. This set might just persuade me to get 75379 to display alongside this!

@Anak said:

As much as I would like to see it in drum gold, I have had trouble with those pieces. First, they scratch easily, and I even have one that looks like a deep gouge was taken out. Second, I have had a couple with incomplete or uneven coverage, including a couple of pieces where there was no lacquer at all on one side. I cannot imagine my frustration if I were to encounter either issue for this one.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

It should come with extra pieces to make the leg in gold and the arm in red.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Gotta go with the concensus that this is a better build then the Chewbacca they did, but its still not a great design. I know the designer is limited by what bricks are available, but so many of the proportions are way off.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I am usually not the one to defend Lego on cost-saving measures, but I honestly don't mind that it's not the drum-lacquered gold. The design looks very good to me as does the pearl gold color scheme, which also matches the 3PO minifigure. Speaking of which, it's great that it's the dual-moulded UCS variant.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s pretty good, and it has some clever parts usage. The ‘face’ kind of reminds me of Threepio from the 80s Droids cartoon.

I saw an image of the R2-D2 photo scaled to match. And they should be more or less scale compatible when comparing the hight and size of the bricks. I think they will look fantastic together!

I’ve been debating whether I want the R2 set, but if these are going to be the same scale then I guess the debate is over. I wonder how they’d look next to Baby Yoda.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would consider it, but I just don't know. But if it is a good scale with the new Artoo, then looks like I have two big purchases to make. Gah!

I was hoping for a helmet style Threepio head. That could be cool to see. I've seen a MOC of one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not really a Star Wars collector but as a lover of figure builds and Warm Gold as a color, I really like the look of this! And it's long overdue—I think the old Technic C-3PO was the last time they attempted a build of such an iconic droid.

The reason why there’s not stickers on the gold is because you can’t match a sticker color to the actual gold Lego peice color. As far as the stickers on the bellly that was merely a choice of budget.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s cool. I’d love to see large scale C-3PO and R2-D2 LEGO minifigures. The buildy kind.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The first impression is great but the over large discs used for the eye design coupled with the flat lower face makes him look suprised or like one of those old timey cartoons where the eyeballs pop out. Awooga!

Gravatar
By in United States,

GWP should be an accessory pack of a stick-branch-chair, a wookie backpack, and Salacious Crumb eating his eye.

Gravatar

I nearly mistook it for a US president.

Gravatar
By in France,

It might not be perfect, but good enough to me, I am so happy they made it, at last, I have been hoping and waiting for this to be designed and released for so long, I love it ! Day 1 purchase for sure.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think he needed printed eyes. 3PO's eyes are quite distinctive and this lacks his pupils, which makes him look a bit off.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I prefer playsets but this is not bad...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

He has the face of an Orangutan.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not perfect, but really really solid. While the silver leg is technically accurate, it does just look a bit jarring. Maybe just because there isn’t dirt and rust on him like there is the movie which kind of blends it better.

But otherwise the actual detailing from the neck down on this is really quite masterful!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I’m not going to buy it but I’d like to use the instructions to build protocol droids in other colours. Maybe even try to make 4-LOM

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think it's an excellent rendition! Sadly, I don't have the space and my wallet is very thin at the moment....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Woah hey look it's C-3P0. Almost didn't recognize him without the red arm!

Gravatar

I’ve lost count of the number of times fans have asked me why Threepeo has a grey leg …

This looks like a great model and a perfect partner for the recently released Artoo.

No, Lego uses special molds that produce slightly thinner pieces if the piece is going to be drum lacquered, to compensate for that. This is why drum lacquered pieces have their own mold ID. You're right about drum lacquered pieces never being built on, though.

You found two now. My first C-3PO minifigure has both legs golden. So no, I don't like mismatched color, I always thought it was golden in the film, and until today I thought everything else was just a weird color decision by LEGO. Actually now I realised I have to get the minifigure with the red arm, which has both printed legs in Pearl Gold, and swap the legs with SW0700 to get the perfect C-3PO.

But to do the same with the set you need to buy either two sets or a set and loose parts for leg in rare color, with some probably being released exclusively for the set. Big ouch.

Please someone build him with two golden legs, give him a golden sword, and put him on a giant film reel to get an ultimate Star Wars Oscar.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm a bit surprised that anyone could watch the movies and not notice the Threepio's right leg was silver from the knee down.

Gravatar

Looks okay but the face is not great.
Will wait for the inevitable price reduction on Amazon before buying it though as £120 is too steep.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm sort of surprised by complaints about this one - first time I saw it I was pleasantly surprised - the build looks neat, I think the pearl gold is better for consistency and was a far more realistic option than the drum-lacquered one. I sort of expected a brick built model to look pretty bad - especially with how that Chewbacca came out the other year (not attempting to knock the designer - just an incredibly rough concept for a Lego model). Overall: not my cup of tea, but hey, a decent model and the price doesn't seem so bad - especially compared to some of the other prices we're seeing now. The matching scale with the new R2 is pretty good too.

Glad they put in the landspeeder 3P0 figure - I have such little fondness for the landspeeder as a vehicle, and generally cheaper options for these figures are better.
