I wonder if it was worth all the bad press and to burn all those influencers and get them banned off social media for reporting on publicly available information just to reveal it officially 2 days later.
Still makes me laugh that Lego insists on an official reveals long after things have already been massively leaked online, and issues its various cease and desist and take down demands. Should have just officially posted it themselves when things became apparent it was out in the wild already...
That said, gonna stand by my comments on the original reveal post that these feel more Disney Princess then 'Oz' in design to me. They're not my personal cup of tea, but those buildable figures are some of the best Lego has done so far imo.
Costs seem a little high for what you get again though... Can see these getting discounts at retailers within the first month.
Is it me or are these not that great? Significantly worse than most friends sets
I only see the transparent leaves.

TLG is not the only one in the picture here, the license holders are often the ones establishing (and then enforcing) the reveal dates. Universal has been terrible with this in many other areas too, especially in getting videos demonetized or removed from Youtube. And we notice how (at least to my recollection) nothing like this ever happens with internal IPs. When you're working with Disney or Universal, there are other rules going on that aren't set up by TLG.
I still don't understand the obsession with finding leaks a couple hours before the actual reveals, seems like a lot of time and energy and heartache spent on something that amounts to nothing. Guarantee that no one who got in trouble this time would have gotten in trouble if they were just linking to the website that posted the images. But everyone needs their piece of the pie, I suppose.
The middest musical to have ever midded a mid. Call me when we've got Mamma Mia sets, please.
I'll keep my eye out for Elphaba's minidoll hat for my fantasy MOC lineup, but otherwise I can pass.
The sets look fine, but I'm not feeling the NEED for them.
They are some nice sets, but won’t be getting them. Only for Jeff Goldblum then. Won’t see the movie either, but they remind me a little of Elves. I think they captured Ariana Grande’s face pretty well. Have any of these actors appeared in LEGO before though, if one counts the SDCC The Collector from Marvel?

I mean, they're not terrible, but they're definitely not the best sets we've seen as of late.
I think these are pretty cool. And--more importantly--so do my kids, who fit the target demographic for these sets!
I might get Emerald City just for parts, but those brickbuilt figures are a nice departure from the typical Brickheadz we've seen so much of, and the style of minidoll lends to those figs very well. I hope we get more of this style across themes rather than only brickheadz. I'll probably pick that set up at the very least.

This wasn't leaked. The sets popped up in stores. TLG is at least partially to blame here, even if it is Universal that took action this time. TLG agreed to the licensing deal after all.

TLG is to blame because retailers can't read? I don't think I can get behind that one.
Now that we have full resolution renders of these, I noticed a new chrysanthemum element in the dormitory trunk set! They have it in trans-yellow and dark pink as lamp shades, but I imagine the piece was actually developed for Animal Crossing (like the peach).

Blame the studio/disrributor. As a licensing partner, TLG is bound by whatever rules were imposed by the company with the most prominent screen credit.

Most likely Universal signed an exclusive media deal with some other company, and is contractually bound to let them have first crack at any announcements. Let it slide, and it puts the studio in breach of contract.
Now that these are no longer behind the curtain, can I pay attention to them?
No train, no sale.

Fair point. Still seems like a weird decision to me though.

Jeff Goldblum has had (at least) two Ian Malcolm minifigures.
The guy who played The Collector in Marvel also played a throw away character named DJ in Star Wars 8, the title of which is escaping me right now because—in general—I try to forget that movie and trilogy. In any event, he had a minifigure that was a GWP.

First person to get both a minifigure AND minidoll?

But Lego agreed to these rules in licensing the products. If Lego wouldn't agree with these practices (that are illegal btw) then Lego wouldn't have signed the deal. The root of all evil once again that the money was just too good.
Unless I'm missing someone, I think this makes Jeff Goldblum the first person to have both a minifig and a minidoll based on him
My familiarity with Wicked is pretty low. I know every word to Popular by heart, but I’ve never read the book or watched any of the musical. I’m not particularly excited for this film in the first place, but I kinda love three out of four of these sets! I might have to pick a few up.
As an adult minidoll lover I’m just thrilled to see more themes in this style. The detailed outfits, namely Glinda’s ball gown, definitely necessitated minidoll parts that allow more printing and wrap around coloring that most modern minifigs still beg for. Luckily for everyone who find themselves commenting how grossed out they are by the mere sight of a minidoll, these characters look pretty easy to turn into minifigs, as there’s no shortage of pre-existing pink dress and witch prints.
The castle looks good. I love the versatility of the dorm turning into a display piece. That’s my guess for the best seller. The $30 set seems pretty weak. But the buildable dolls? Yes please! I hope we see Lego Friends take a crack at that. Or just more themes in general. They’ve got a certain charm I’ve never seen from a buidlable Lego figure before. Next stop, minidoll mech?
Only question is will it get 20% or 30% off a month after it's out.

We can't have companies making money, now can we?
Truth of the matter is that without licenses like these, LEGO would probably be a distant memory by now. Also, nothing illegal here. Their lawyers know very well how things work.
Well, I am happy to pass on these sets.
Something familiar about this post…

Yes, please!
If they do that, we get a Pierce Brosnan figure, which means James Bond; and a Colin Firth figure, which means Lego Kingsman. Bring it on!
Those sets only LOOK good.
>Huge set lacks floor space on every level (This is a problem of many new lego sets...)
>Small set is ok, but litteraly has nothing fun to offer besides pieces
>Those Buildable dolls are cool, but should not take spot as a set in theme, that should be a special set.
>That Box uses so much pieces for buildable deco that cant be used by figs... Just give normal rooms that can connect...
I won't be getting any of these, but the builds are nice, although the minidolls...
Why Lego is obsessed with QR codes?
Well, I have zero interest in this franchise, but the sets look fine to me, the price per piece / volume of stuff for the price point seems OK especially for a licensed set. Each set contains both major characters so affordability to fans seems decent- I’d say Lego has got it right for the most part with these sets.
I'm sorry...Shiz University??
75682 is really compelling to me. I might wait for a discount but there's something charming about it.
@Rankstyle said:
"I'm sorry...Shiz University??"
It's actually accurate to the source material of the book / musical / film.
@Librarian1976:
The Collector was Benicio del Toro, but Goldblum's Grandmaster did get a minifig in 76088.

Are we counting voice roles? If so, there are several Disney characters who have appeared in minidoll form through Disney Princess, and minifig form through either the CMF line or the generic Disney theme. If we're only counting live-action, it might be the live-action Ariel (minidoll in 43229, minifig in 43225), played by Halle Bailey.
@GirlWoman:
Media contracts would have been signed in the US, where they're absolutely legal. If TLG's licensing contract was signed in the US, I don't see where there would be a problem. This type of contract wouldn't prohibit anyone else from posting about it, just that some media company gets first crack at everything. Until they announce it, the images would be treated as confidential information, which would be how Universal could issue C&D orders or get images/videos pulled by the hosting company. This does get a bit sticky when copies end up in the public, where anyone can walk up and look at them. Frequently, these days, those sets will be street-dated in the computer system, and the store won't be allowed to even ring them up (both Target and Walmart have had notices pop up at checkout informing the cashier to confiscate stuff that I found shelved early).
I'm pretty pleased with these sets for the most part! I have mixed feelings about the Wicked books themselves, but I remember the musical being a lot of fun, and I'm a very big fan of the original Oz books so can definitely appreciate how many different new stories they have inspired.
My biggest gripe is that Shiz university appears to be decorated in shades of blue — at least in the book, it was located in the Gillikin country, in which case its primary color ought to be purple! Traditionally, the four countries that make up the Land of Oz are color-coded, just as the Emerald City is. Perhaps in the film they will be relocating it to the Munchkin country? Or perhaps like the 1939 film they will simply not bother with much of that sort of regional color-coding.
It also surprises me that there are no animals in these sets, since I remember talking animal characters being a BIG deal in both the book and musical, and also since animal characters tend to be a really huge selling point in other LEGO themes.
On a more positive note, the brick-built dolls look very fun, and are something I've been hoping to see LEGO try their hand at for years now! I'd love to see more in other themes (including dolls of non-licensed characters which can potentially prioritize customizable outfits and hairstyles over matching the specific costumes and hairstyles of their on-screen counterparts), but this definitely seems like a versatile style that LEGO could do a lot more with in the future.
There's also a lot of really beautifully constructed furniture in this theme, both in the Emerald City set and the dorm room that converts into a jewelry box/storage case. And the new rose/carnation plate used for both flowers and light fixtures in these sets looks very versatile indeed! And the shapes and varying shades of green in the design of the Emerald City do a great job echoing its fantasy art deco architecture from the 1939 film.
The hidden QR codes are also a neat way of incorporating the actual musical numbers of the film/play into the sets themselves beyond just their accompanying costumes and scenery. Props to LEGO for recognizing how important the songs are to Wicked's mainstream popularity, and for figuring out an unobtrusive way to connect them with the sets.
All in all, while I usually tend to prefer Oz stories that draw more heavily on the original books than just on the 1939 film, as well as ones that center child protagonists on magical adventures over adult/college-age characters dealing with adult academic, vocational, and political anxieties, I realize few stories like that really reach the level of mainstream awareness these days that they'd need to justify a LEGO theme.
So I'm mostly gonna hope this Wicked adaptation does well enough to be enjoyable in its own right, and to get more people interested in Oz characters and Oz stories (including filmmakers who might be willing to face the challenge of creating or adapting Oz stories that draw more heavily on books beyond "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and its 1939 film adaptation).
Loving the buildable rose in 75683 . Also, I saw 75684 and got very excited. Not for the set itself, but because of one specific thing in it. They've created a bicycle that a minidoll can actually hold the handlebars of!

The bicycle in this set is the type with bars for connecting it to a cart instead of a front wheel, which has been compatible with either type of handlebar for a while: https://brickset.com/parts/design-50015
There's still no regular bicycle that can accept mini-doll handlebars, but they did also release a mountain bike that's compatible with them in this set this year: https://brickset.com/sets/42624-1/Adventure-Camp-Cozy-Cabins
I like the trans green jug and look forward to this in other colors.

I see that now. I guess I wasn't paying much attention before.
I'm disappointed Elphaba isn't wearing glasses in any of these set, shame on LEGO. Also, Emerald City is very underwhelming, I was hoping for a grander looking city, with more trans bright green pieces, like the picture of the city in the buildable figures set. I like the buildable characters, they are interesting. I think I like the trunk the best.
To me, this is the Lego version of Raygun break dancing in the Olympics.
Please do NOT look up anything I referenced. Your eyes and mind will never be the same.
I have never read / seen / heard any of the source material, but I do like the colour & details in these builds.

Oh, that’s right. I don’t how I could think of Jeff Goldblum as The Collector when it clearly was Benicio del Toro. No, he played the Grand Master in MCU. I am not into Jurassic so didn’t knew he played a character in that, but he might appear in some sets then.

And lastly; I KNOW TLG and Universal have 'a deal' now, but COME ON...

I mean, we've had an official Wicked Witch minifig since Dimensions in 2015, flying monkeys since TLBM and a full complement of Dorothy, Toto, the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man since TLM2. I'm guessing the die-hard Ozzites (?) already have those on their walls, they can just take them down and plunk them in these sets. Everybody wins!"
That Emerald City is so lacking in finished architectural detail that it's very difficult to tell which is the inside and which is the outside (pun intended).
Moreover, it's an awful resemblance to 21003.

I mean, from the building level and the age recommendation on the boxes, it seems to me like the target audience is "kids ages 7 and up who like the play and/or movie a whole lot." If some adults who like Wicked end up drawn to these sets that's a nice bonus, but that doesn't seem like a demographic these sets are going out of their way to target.
Wicked was an extremely popular musical among teens and tweens even when you still needed tickets to a live production to see it, so tailoring the sets to that sort of age range seems like a relatively safe bet on LEGO's part. And if your concern is with the minidolls… well, LEGO Elves previously managed a pretty successful four-year run aimed at around this same age bracket, and by now there are even more kids who grew up with minidolls than there were back then, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
Mind you, I wouldn't expect this to become a long-term fixture in LEGO catalogs like Disney Princess, Super Heroes, or Star Wars. Rather, I imagine it'll be one of those sorts of movie tie-in themes like Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, or Despicable Me/Minions that only gets new sets in years when they can tie in with new or recent movie releases. But even so, I think LEGO could do a whole lot worse than Wicked for that sort of flash-in-the-pan licensed theme.

Minidolls haven't been Friends-exclusive since 2013. Like 'em or not, it's not really surprising at this point to see new themes using them, especially themes that seem especially likely to appeal to girls.

I am genuinely surprised that LEGO use this name in their official sets given their stance on treating kids like snowflakes. I know LEGO has no control over the name from the books and play but come on? (Pun intended.)
