Wicked sets revealed!

Posted by ,

French retailer Fnac has published the first images of four Wicked sets, which will be released on the 1st of October.

These interesting models depict various scenes from the first act of the musical, adapted in this November's 'Part One' film.

Update: Sorry, we've been asked to remove the images at the request of LEGO's IP partner although, as I write, they are still online at Fnac.

Meh. Just repacked Friends sets

This seems more akin to the Disney princess sets than Friends. Friends has been changing their design philosophy over the past few years and I wish some of that carried over here.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really hope these lead to some wizard of oz sets with minifigs. I’m happy for those that like these but as already mentioned they just look like rehashed friends sets.

By in Australia,

A rare case of when Lego buildable figures don't become my new sleep paralysis demon...

Gravatar
By in United States,

YES! Buildable minidolls!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I just noticed a QR code in set 75682. I wonder what that leads to? It's a strange set either way. The figures don't look sturdy enough to play with so I wonder who this is for? Am I missing something?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Those hands in the 75682 big figures are new parts.

Gravatar
By in United States,

75682 Truly is the stuff of nightmares, eugh.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

When I asked LEGO to bring back LEGO Elves, this isn't what I had in mind.

I kind of like the University, but I doubt I'll pick any of these up.

You're just saying that because they made a giant figure of Pixar's Envy, from Inside Out.

those lego nendoroid dolls are kind of cute, much nicer than the lego funko pops all the other licensed themes get at least

I wouldn't be surprised to see more characters done in this style.

Gravatar

These are so cute! Love the buildable dolls!

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Eww, another mini-doll based theme. Pass.

Maybe I would show more interest if they used minifigs instead.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd love to see other sets and themes in the style of 75682.

Gravatar
By in United States,

75682's characters have very fat, odd faces...Seems like...Friends DUPLO, style wise...Not bad, just...odd.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They just look like a bunch of modified Disney sets to me and the figure set is just creepy. Maybe if they get big price reductions I might go for the Emerald City one. The Dormitory is interesting but way too much pink!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Some really cool creative ways of packaging up a licensed theme for display and play within a limited range of sets and for an audience that isn't necessarily hardcore LEGO fans. Not for me, but I hope the figures with the display stand does well and that we get more lower-cost (I assume) display sets like this.
Also, everyone decrying this as not-Elves should consider that Wicked is very earnestly one of the best fantasy stories I've seen in pop culture. It has world-building details like many of your favorite TV and book series, it has this epic story about a fascist regime and the people trying to resist it, it has whimsy sprinkled in the way Harry Potter or The Last Airbender do. Seriously a great show, it surprised me how much I liked it.

Surprising to get a set reveal so soon after RSotD!

Two quick thoughts:
1: the Glinda and Elphaba buildable figures are by far the least cursed buildable figures LEGO has ever put out.
2: of course they just HAD to turn the Dormitory set into a jewelry box. Typical.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hopefully the Wednesday sets will be revealed soon? The dorm is the only one I might want but I want images.

Vertical integration, baby!

I am digging the brick built figs, but something seems inconsistent, aesthetically…

Gravatar

I doubt I'll get any of these, but I like the way the dolls in 75682 were done. Hope they make more of 'em, seem to have nice articulation.

Sets based on the 1939 film would have been so much better because they would be timeless. These are for a movie that will be forgotten in a week.

Gravatar

No train, a bit disappointed albeit not unexpected.

I may pick up the Jeff Goldblum minidoll on the aftermarket though...

Not sure if it will be forgotten easily, considering there is already a sequel in the pipeline for next year. Also, the musical that the movies are based on has been a phenomenon for twenty years, and is still popular on Broadway.

Of course, the 1939 film will always be the original and most timeless piece of Oz media (and sets would be great), but Wicked has found plenty of its own fans - it is arguably the second most beloved, after that film.

I don't blame LEGO for making sets for what is relevant right now, and for what is almost a guaranteed hit. Whether or not that will translate to toy sales, though, I don't know. We will just have to wait and see!

What? The movie is an adaptation of a stage musical that's been running for over 20 years. Even assuming the movie adaptation specifically doesn't do well (which I currently have no reason to assume), these sets would hardly be as "stuck in a certain time" as, say, the Avatar 2 sets.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Truly among the sets of all time, for sure

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm still surprised at how playful and fun these sets look. As someone who watched the musical on stage and has listened to the Broadway soundtrack for many years, my personal interpretation of Wicked is actually a bit darker in tone compared what these sets make it to be, but perhaps that adds to the artful contrast that Wicked is all about and that I hope we see in the movie.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

EHHHH....
Lego is changing for worse. 2 of these sets arent even propper playsets.
The Box looks cool, but so many pieces goes for unnecesary details...
Like that bottle- Its not for minidolls.
The huge set barrely has any playspace at the back...

Gravatar

The fact they made sets of those One-off movies but timeless Phineas and Ferb was rejcected FOURTH TIME on Ideas breaks my heart.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Don’t care for the sets, but the faces on those buildable figures still feel a bit off to me…

Gravatar
By in United States,

The dormitory is fantastic! Really impressed on how well that set is done. It's like the Disney book sets but done on a much higher level. Everything else gets a meh. Here's hoping we get the train when the sequel comes out...

Seems funny to me that a musical thats aimed at adults, has lego sets that are clearly more aimed towards kids...

Do agree with the consent though that the buildable figures are probably some of the best Lego has done so far.

The sets give of a very 'Disney Princess' vibe to me, rather then evoking Oz. Overall, not my cup of tea.

Theme? I must have forgot or missed this...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@missedoutagain Wednesday is that Addams Family show on Netflix, think that theme leaked around the same time as this one

Gravatar
By in France,

The box art is very strange, looks practically fan-made or AI generated. Sets are meh, I'm not sure about the combination of the green with the more typical Friends-y colours. Trans-opalescent green would've been a lovely innovation for Emerald City. The buildable figures looked strange at first, but they're really growing on me.

For everyone complaining that they'd rather have sets based on the 1939 movie, me too (I hunted down all of the Wizard of Oz figures LEGO put out a few years ago), but I think ultimately stuff like this is up to the license holder, and obviously stuff based on a movie currently in theatres is going to sell better to children and is going to be part of a larger marketing campaign to get people to buy tickets for the movie. It would be great to get more Oz stuff than a few figures scattered in LEGO Movie sets and the Dimensions pack, but I wouldn't hold my breath, and of course the great thing about LEGO is you can just build your own Emerald City or Munchkinland without having to wait for the company to officially release something.

Yes especialy on second and third floor!

Its just a facade. Like most of buildings nowadays. It's created to be model first and plaything maybe, so they are LESS as a toy.

The reveal went up before RMotD, I believe. The first comment was posted one minute after RMotD, as proof, but this article’s timestamp was probably adjusted to float it to the top where it wouldn’t be missed by the morning readers.

@TheBrickPal:
Indeed, the 1939 movie is the reason why many people think the original story involved ruby slippers.

@Jeddostotle7:
And the musical was based on a book that was published eight years earlier, so the story is now 29 years old.

Seems like many news sets now are "monkey's paw" wishes, lol.

I am a fan of the original books. So much interesting content, that is mostly in the public domain. Not a huge fan of Wicked or the 1939 movie, but I like seeing adaptations of OZ in general.

I would love to have seen Lego's take on OZ, but I know that will not happen for many reasons.

Also, guessing that this is a good preview of what the Wednesday sets will look like, especially the buildable figures

The film will probably be an all-ages one, to be fair. Wizard of Oz entries have never been rated above PG. Even if the film is aimed at older audiences, this isn’t the first time where the LEGO sets targeted a disproportionately younger age than the film. The Batman and The Dark Knight Rises got sets for this same age group and those were pushing the envelope on a PG-13 rating.

Dear folks,

I have no intention of 'attacking' others and I respect everybody's opinion (at least, to a degree), but I was just pointing out that the constant hating on minidolls, from what I can only assume are mostly older guys for whom these products aren't intended, is really lame and getting pretty old. Minidolls are here to stay, so deal with it already. If you don't like them, there are plenty of other LEGO sets with wonderful minifigures!

I don't see how such hate comments are any less toxic for the community, which includes many fans of minidoll-centred themes, than me taking a light-hearted jab at said type of remark. So, it's perfectly okay to totally dump on something many people on this platform adore, but not to address that behavior (which I consider bullying) directly? That, if anything, sounds like a toxic environment to me and the irony of it all cannot be lost on you.

Anyway, let's play nice and let people love what they love. It's fine to have an opinion, but if you don't like something at all, I don't even see the point of bothering to comment. I mean, I don't care much for Star Wars sets, but you don' see me commenting on every review: "Oh, another boring gray spaceship! Ewww." Because that's childish behavior. If it's not for you, that's fine, but let others enjoy it. Not that hard, is it?

Have a great evening!

probably a lot older guys who like them... Sets are okay some fantastic..., colors are great, most the time you will not get those colors in regular sets. Mini dolls are not really for me but I would still collect them.. It really nice have options, I also do not care minecraft but great others who do.

It works for me in California.

Just go to www.fr.fnac.ch and search for "lego" and the set number (e.g., "lego 75682"). The search box is labeled "rechercher" (French for search)

Wow. What a mess to sort out. Looks like anything written by Baum himself is already in the public domain, including 14 novels and some short stories. It's the other 26 books, written by various other authors, under contract with Baum's publisher, and which are considered to be official canon, where things get really messy. Copyright laws vary from one nation to the next, and current law extends copyright based on when the author dies, so 15 of the other books are public domain. One book, the text from a second, and the illustrations and cover art from two more, won't enter the public domain for at least the next 70 years, depending on when the last two content creators pass away.

If you have an issue with the build quality, subject matter, or color choices, that’s one thing. Not everything will fit everyone’s taste, and you won’t be forced to buy the sets. But writing off this or Friends or Disney or Elves just because they have minidolls is BIG “mommy cuts the crust off my sandwiches” energy. I can assure you, the minidolls don’t have cooties.

Be careful, people might be offended by this and call you toxic. ;-)

But yeah, this was exactly what I meant in my original post. And I wasn't taking shots at anyone, as I detailled at length in my previous post, I was simply spoofing someone's childish response to seeing minidolls and somehow a few folks misconstrued that for being rude -- while seemingly being totally okay with repeatedly deriding the much-loved minidolls.

Luckily the 20+ people who liked my initial post understood my original intent, and I therefore assume feel the same way about the constant hating on minidolls. We can be critical on the actual builds, as you say, but if a theme is not for you, move on. Don't hate on things people love. It's dumb.
