Friends Advent Calendar - Day 14

Posted by ,

We've met almost the entire family now, with Rose and baby Ella being behind the doors in the last two days. While it's been great to meet the family, I'm kind of missing having something to build, so hopefully we'll get something today - indoor or outdoor.

Today we have a very colourful sound system! There's a small stage complete with mic that looks to be just the right size for a little Paisley. There is a large speaker included so the entire house can hear the music. A cellphone, which undoubtedly has includes the playlist, is on top.

While it's nice to have a build, I do wish it was a little more festive.

Makes me miss my iPod. Oh wait, I still use it (as well as iTunes) in 2024!

Hey, pink is a shade of red, and lime is a shade of green, so it's festive-adjacent!

The colors feel like a call-forward to Paisley's secret popstar identity. At least, that's what the high-contrast multiple colors somehow trying to be balanced reminds me of anyway.

Overall a very fitting build for the calender, characters and entire aesthetic of the soft-reboot.

Now I just hope Olly gets a build as well.

If people are able to be nostalgic about iTunes then I am officially too ancient to peacefully co-exist with most of humanity.

@Binnekamp: It's not any kind of reboot, just moving the story forward with a new generation of Friends. What they did in 2018 would be closer to a soft reboot.

I'd say I'm nostalgic for cassette tapes, but I saw a New York Times article recently about those coming back.

Which is something is just cannot understand. Any type of tape medium is inherently worse than the comparable disc medium. Audio cassette tape is worse than either vinyl or CD, video cassette tape (VHS, Betamax or Video2000) is worse than DVD, let alone BluRay. The only exception might be high end audiophile tape as in reel to reel tape machines, but there's still the extra hassle of fiddling with the tape, non-direct access, and more wear and tear due to spooling.
Seriously, if you are nostalgic for old types of music media, why go for cassette tape when both vinyl as well as CD is superior, both in quality and handling?
It's not even fun, dealing with tapes. I remember both when I replaced tapes with CDs and VHS with DVD. It was such a fundamental improvement each time that I never looked back fondly at the old medium that was replaced.

I'm not nostalgic for it. Hence the line "Oh wait...". In order to be nostalgic for something it would have had to go away in the first place; I've been using it since 2005 and never stopped.

@AustinPowers:
Reel-to-reel had a distinct advantage over any disc-shaped medium in that you can edit magnetic tape. Not only can you cut and splice it, but they frequently recorded one track at a time over the same tape.

You may have missed that I mentioned reel to reel tape explicitly as "the only exception...".

I did not, and in fact was responding specifically to the "extra hassle" bit. Of course, nowadays it's mostly done on a computer.

My kid begged me to buy him one at a 21 Pilots show about 6 years ago. $15! He played it to death on an old boombox of mine from the 90s.

The boombox is still kickin', but the tape is dead.

BTW, the boombox shares way too many colors from today's set. ;)
