Friends Advent Calendar - Day 21
Posted by MeganL,It took until Day 20, but we have finally met all the characters for our holiday scene after meeting Jonathan yesterday. I still think we should have seen Jonathan in a Christmas sweater or something - he seems like a fun dad (not to be confused with My Dad). Anyway, back to the matter at hand, let's see if there's a festive build behind today's door.
Indeed, we do have something festive! Today we have a hearth - another nice little build. Clearly we know why Jonathan was hard at work chopping wood - it's necessary to fuel that rather large flame inside that smallish hearth. The wreath looks quite appropriate, there's some nice continuity with a chocolate chip cookie on the mantle for the visitor expected on December 24.

"I still think we should have seen Jonathan in a Christmas sweater or something - he seems like a fun dad (not to be confused with My Dad)." Thanks for the laugh, Megan.
A bit small, but also quite ambitious. I like it. The wreath gives it a point over the HP one in my book.
Maybe it's an exaggeration, but I'm a perfectionist when it comes to the LEGO lettering on studs, so I would put it the other way around so it wouldn't be upside down.

I used to be that way, but my stroke added enough difficulty to Lego-building that I was fine letting it slide.

I had to order all the ingots round the edge in 21056 so that the sprue marks and LEGO lettering were next to each other. It was a pain, but worth it.

Yeah, I know this feeling.

That’s the result of fully inserting the flame into the plate before attaching the plate to the base. The hat pin connection sticks down far enough to either prevent the plate from being fully seated, or force the flame base to push out (possibly bending the hat pin if you still attach everything in that order). Frankly, I’m surprised this isn’t an illegal build, without a second Apollo stud to provide some extra depth to accommodate the hat pin.

Similar with the Mona Lisa!

But that would also result in pieces not getting the necessary clearance, because I don't think the flame would fit in the fireplace if you added another plate.
Burning cookie

Yes, it would definitely require further changes. If they used a 1x3 arch, it might otherwise fit. Because they used the 1.5x1.5 corner arches (which looks better), you’ve got sidewalls directly over the flame. You’d have to raise the entire fireplace up one stud, either by adding two additional parts to put under the arches, or by putting a 1x3 tic-tac plate under the whole thing (three fully hollow studs in a row). But dealing with illegal build techniques in an official set is never supposed to be contingent on whether or not the result fits. Either it’s a legal technique, or they aren’t supposed to do it.
is that a 1x3 double jumper (34103) holding up the wreath? My 8yo opened this one today and was trying to sort it out. I don't think I got the right piece (black 1x2 plate with door rail, 32028).

Had the wrong piece. I found someone doing the build and identified the right one and found the brick number (6199908). Lego says something like 9-15 business days.

I once received the wrong brown wedge brick in a copy of 4101, and received the wrong angle connector in two copies of 8009 (purchased on the same day). This is the first time I can recall hearing that anyone got shipped the wrong _part_ in an advent calendar. Usually it's the daily bags that get mixed up.
