City Advent Calendar - Day 19

Posted by ,

We (finally!) got back into the building scene with yesterday's excellent reindeer and sleigh. The days are getting short, only a few days to go, and hopefully some good few builds to be had....

It's another staple of advent calendars, a snowman! I'm always reminded of this summary of LEGO snowmen that was written several years ago (really, someone should update that sometime!). Like Christmas trees, snowmen are something that have to be challenge for the designers to come up with new ways to build. I like this version as it includes a scarf with a nice top hat. With the minifigure head, we're missing the carrot nose, but overall I think this is a worthy addition to the snowman collection.

Dapper snowman. Is it just me, or does nobody ever put a top hat on a snowman?

One of the best snowmen. The only things it needs is a plain white BB8 body and that one printed snowman head that lego refuses to reuse since its lone appearance in one calender once.

City seems to be making a slight comeback lately. But is it 'too little' too late?

If I had a top hat lying around I would.

The real tragedy is that top hats aren't in style anymore. And yes, I know there are many reasons. But come on... top hats!

Is this a design used before? I realise it would be a massive undertaking to make the snowman different every single year but this feel like a definite repeat of something

How many people actually own ones…particularly ones they wouldn’t mind leaving out on a snowman?

It's pretty much the same design as the snowman in the first HPAC, 75964 . With a top hat instead of a wizard hat, and without the 4x4 round plate on the bottom.

I'd guess it's because a lot of our traditional and 'cozy christmas' images stem from Victoriana (ice skating on frozen lakes, stockings by the fire, chestnuts, decorating christmas trees etc) so the traditional image of building a snowman with a top hat is from a time when people actually wore top hats!

In USSR they used buckets instead of top hats.

Many beavers died to bring us the information, oops, I mean, to provide top hats. (looks wistfully into the middle distance)

I'm extremely pro-beaver.

That's why snowmen don't come to life anymore.

No, "Happy Birthday!"

Lego has never nailed the snowman. In my opinion the best is the design with the 2x2 dish pieces attached to a snot brick, but even that has gaps on the sides.

71034-3.

Note the top hat.

"We (finally!) got back into the building scene with yesterday's excellent reindeer and snowman." Reindeer and... what? I'd been wondering if you wrote the intros before or after seeing the gift, I guess that answers that.

Yeah, when I saw https://brickset.com/parts/6231960/mini-head-no-2617 in 75213, I thought it would be showing up a lot in future ACs. Still mystifies me that it hasn't been reused.

@brick_r, regarding the link you posted yesterday, which I did not see until after today's had posted: I once had dreams of doing a video like that for that song, although I wouldn't have used the "Extra Gory Version." I even got the idea from the same set featured in the video, 10245.

80106 Story of Nian without the top hat. I added a hat to mine and put him in front of the Elf Club House

We do have a lot of water, I suppose you could just throw a hat into the drink? Not a top hat though. We still don't have any."

Of course you don’t, if you’ve spent the last few hundred years chucking every top hat you could find into the ocean!

That sounds horrible and so wrong that there is no snow in Netherlands.

By in Germany,

The build is rather similar to last year’s skiing snowman where we had a discussion about the scarf being an illegal connection. They fixed this issue with the additional 1x1 round plate.

Surprisingly my partner owns a top hat! She had it from her younger years when she rode in Dressage competitions. Definately not going outside and definately not on a snowman!

@Ridgeheart heartily suggests chucking it in the ocean.
