Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 6
Posted by CapnRex101,I was satisfied with yesterday AT-AT and expect another mini vehicle next, based on something memorable from the relatively small LEGO Star Wars range in 2004.
See what has been selected after the break...
Much like yesterday's AT-AT, the Y-wing Starfighter is a beloved vehicle from the Original Trilogy and this model makes reference to 10134 Y-wing Attack Starfighter. Even though the Y-wing has appeared in Advent Calendars three times before, this edition is quite different, as its engines are situated further apart and the cockpit is wider.
I appreciate what the designer was attempting here because previous models have arguably been too slender, but this example seems rather ungainly. The 1x2 jumper plate used for the cockpit is particularly awkward, although the splashes of yellow look superb. Similarly, the engines are too far apart, but I again see what the designer was aiming to do, separating them from the fuselage, which has been problematic in the past.
Overall - This rendition of a Y-wing features some lovely details, but looks odd in places.

I have no comment, but it can zoom!
Bring up a Hammerhead Y-wing. I've got an idea.
I much prefer the model in 75184 that used curved slopes for the sides. This is okay, but a dowgrade in comparison. (Better than the very fragile 7958 model, tho.)
I was looking through the "BTL Y-Wing" tag to see what set this might be referencing, and was pleased to see that, in addition to owning all of the standalone Y-Wing sets and all the Y-Wing Microfighters, I also have all the Advent Calendars that have Y-Wings, as it's always been my favorite snubfighter.
Out of everything from 2004 they chose to homage the UCS Y-Wing?
Well, there wasn't much to work with I guess. Maybe something with a dewback or Greedo. Or a dark red sandspeeder? Nah, it'd miss sand red. At least the Y-Wing technically had two models that year, as the 1999 one was re-released too. Or maybe something to reference the Millennium Falcon and its fleshie minifigs somehow?
The snowspeeder could have been distinctive too, being white but still with orange highlights.
Personally I would have done a TIE Droid Fighter from 10131 TIE Fighter Collection but I understand it might have been a bit too obscure of a reference.
I guess the further we go along the more we'll run into the issue of sets being remakes of older subject matter that had been done before.

Aaaaaah, the Greedo with printed arms!!! One of my holy grails that I've yet to get.
Day 1: X-Wing - representing 7140 from 1999
Day 2: Princess Leia - representing her first appearance in 2000, specifically in 7190
Day 3: TIE Fighter - representing 7146 from 2001
Day 4: Super Battle Droid - representing its first appearance in 2002, specifically in 7163
Day 5: AT-AT Walker - representing 4483 from 2003
Day 6: Y-Wing - representing either 7262 or 10134 from 2004 (if I had to put my money on one of them, I'd say 7262)
This might be the weakest build so far. I get that it's supposed to look bare-bones like the 2004 Y-Wing, but it just comes off looking kinda ugly. But I do like the drum-lacquered silver stud though!
Again, pretty strong competition today. Mostly.
6. SW No chance against the other entries (0 points today + 13 points previously earned = 13 points total)
5. City As a toy boat build, it's actually pretty GOOD! (1+17=18)
4. Fr Quite suprising that Olly, a fashion victim, started out with that cap (2+12=14)
3. Dis I have a soft spot for that pig and hope the calender lets the prices drop on the secondary market (3+11=14)
2. HP Malfoy is the kind of villain we al love (4+14=16)

Glad I'm not the only one who loves the Wishbone, best Ship in the Verse in my opinion :)
I suspected this would arrive today and yep, called it! Not a bad model, but I wanna try it with a 1x1 tile on the nose instead.
"Stay on target, stay on target"!
@myla: Neither of the Y-Wing models in 2004 had pink pieces at the end of the nacelles.

Part of the reason I love it is that its engines remind me of warp nacelles on Starfleet ships.
Sorry Cap, but I have to disagree. This version of the Y-wing is superior to the other advent calendar entries. I have the other two, but like this one best.
It’s days like these you realize they really do need to make a 1x1 plate with clips on both sides.

You mean something like https://brickset.com/parts/design-78257 but with clips instead of bars?
