Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 23

Posted by ,

Clearly, 26 years of LEGO Star Wars history will not fit in a 24-day Advent Calendar, so a couple of years between 2021 and 2024 will have to be overlooked.

Today's item will tell us whether 2021 is one of those...

Luke's famed X-34 Landspeeder actually appeared in 2021 and 2022, but unless this model pays homage to the three-piece version from 40451 Tatooine Homestead, I think we are moving ahead to 2022 and 75341 Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder! The vehicle is a regular sight in Advent Calendars and equivalent small-scale models have appeared in several other sets, as far back as a bag charm from 2008, which is not surprising because the vehicle is ideal for this scale. Still, improvements tend to occur with each new design.

This is no exception, as the engines are now more securely attached at the back, rather than using 1x1 plates with side rings. I am less certain about whether the shorter nose and wider windscreen are improvements on the 2022 design. This edition looks good and I love seeing Luke and C-3PO seated on board, but the previous model was a little sleeker. Even so, the overall shape and colour scheme are excellent.

Overall - Luke's Landspeeder always looks great at this scale, but the last version only appeared two years ago, so it is quite repetitive.

Here is today's ranking (in my opinion):
6. Friends
5. Disney

1. Spider-Man

By in United States,

I've got my four landspeeders (75056, 75213, 75340, 75395) lined up, and man, they're all a little similar and yet a little different. Kudos for them finally solving the hole in the front problem with the half-moon tile. Probably no immediate fixing the need for a round 2x2 grey plate in the middle.

The calendars struggle with where to put the maroon pieces. Indeed, it's only a decorative accent on the actual landspeeder, so we'll be debating forever where and how much maroon to include.

This year has a unique take on the engine builds, although I prefer models that try to show that the driver-side engine is damaged. Also, this year uses a more compressed front. Other ACs have had the windscreen three studs back; this one uses two. So it's an okay model and I really like the half-moon tile, but I wish the next time it appears, somebody would use the best techniques from all four models and get a best version going. I'd say 75213's engines, 75340's body, and this year's use of the half-moon.

By in United States,

Love the use 1x1 bricks as the characters in the vehicle, you don't see that much in the calendar and that provides some newness!

Also, can we start combining advent calendar posts into one daily post with all the calendars next year? There are too many calendars and it's destroying the news feed during the holidays and it's easy to miss non-calendar updates!

By in Netherlands,

I wonder how it compares to the shadowbox version?

I mean, it's another Landspeeder and we're even skipping the year of 2021, so what else can I even say about this as someone who doesn't own the previous advent calender versions and doesn't care about the tiny differences?

Like the article notes, this could be a double-reference to 2021's 40451 and the 2022 UCS model.

By in United States,

I'm unsure whether I like this one or the one from 75340 better. As for the engines, I like the fact that 2022's version managed to represent the missing engine cowling. On the other hand, I like the SNOT technique this one uses, As for the windscreen, this one may be a bit too wide, but 75340's was a bit too narrow. But it's microscale, you can't get things perfect in microscale. I think that in that particular case, I prefer this one, as 2022's version looked like Luke and Threepio had squeezed themselves into a vehicle that was only supposed to seat one. One thing I do prefer about this one is that Luke and Threepio are represented by plate stacks, rather than single plates, which allows for a tiny bit more detail. Side note: it always amused me that, due to the landspeeder, 75340 had two each of Luke and C-3P0. This calendar doesn't have the droid, but it does have Luke, so it still almost follows suit!

Could have done with a bit more colour consistency

By in United States,

Pretty good little speeder — the proportions of some of the builds during the middle of this calendar were a little rough, but at least the last couple of days have been slowly improving. Like others have said above, I'm not sure which microbuild of the X-34 is my favorite; I own three out of the four.

Given that this build is meant to represent 2022, I wonder whether a microbuild of 75337 would have been a better choice, given both the hype around that set's release, and the fact that we haven't had an AT-TE in one of these since 2013!

Only a small variation from what we've seen before, but I always find these little landspeeders delightful.

Added to my personal list. If I edit here, I'm going to have to add a bunch of hashtags and it'll drive me insane. It'll appear next year, thanks!

I suppose I'm breaking my own standards by saying there's been four Slave-1s when three have been the OT version and one was the PT version. It's the same ship with a different paint job in AOTC, though!

By in United States,

They can make the grey grill a half circle, if they used slightly newer pieces like the 2x2 u shaped tile and the 1x2 half circle with stud

By in United States,

Now I got extra bored and want to know how well my Advent vehicles scale to each other. So, here's all the ships, again, in order of their in-universe size (which I got off of Google--your mileage may vary as to how accurate this is).

Excellent review as always cap! I got an extra half circle tile in my pack and attached it at the back to look like sand swirling around from the engines. Did any one else gat an extra tile also? Happy Holidays to all. Stay safe as you travel and find some time to celebrate with your loved ones.

Ok. The moment you've all been waiting for. StyleCounselor's listing of the lists.

1. @ResIpsaLoquitur (List 1) - comprehensive, traditional, lots if useful information, and easy to understand.
2. @ResIpsaLoquitur (List 2) - innovative, interesting, and obviously lots of work and research put into it.
3. @WolfpackBricksStudios - very thorough and somewhat amenable to criticism, some useful info but each day is largely redundant, and it took too long to recognize Y-wing mistake.
4. @jkb - confusing amalgam of ideas and figures which he is clearly working into a new Pythagorean Theorem of Lego ACs, but at least it's not obviously just a random, unjustified, personal opinion.
5. @Brickes_ficko - little to no useful information, but simple, concise, and easy to understand.
6. @Ridgeheart - little to no information. Just sad, drunken ramblings about Hulking murderous penguins.

@StyleCounselor thank you, but my list sebjective, therefore personal.
For those who may be confused by my parameters: I definitely prefer Minifigs, (larger) builds for minifigs, stuff that is useful outside of the AC context and somewhat original/creative builds. More or less in this order.
Single parts (like that one plushie) may be nice for themselves, but are a bit boring compared to anything else.

Hmm... I just don't think City has been very good this year. The torso prints (and dog) are very good. The rest has been quite underwhelming.

My rankings are on a day-by-day basis. Sometimes the spots 1 - 4 were very close, sometimes all six gifts were disappointing. But once you start, you have to keep going and distribute ranking points :-)
If I had compared the whole ACs to each other, I think Disney would still be dead last, as it hadn't much Holiday-related stuff and terrible figures. Star Wars is weak this year, even when the historical representation idea is a welcome change to the usual drill. But older ACs were more interesting...

" @StyleCounselor thank you, but my list sebjective, therefore personal.
For those who may be confused by my parameters: I definitely prefer Minifigs, (larger) builds for minifigs, stuff that is useful outside of the AC context and somewhat original/creative builds. More or less in this order.
Single parts (like that one plushie) may be nice for themselves, but are a bit boring compared to anything else."

Everything you said is reasonable. Nevertheless, my rankings for this year would be:

1. HP
2. SW
3. City
4. Fri
5. Spi
6. Dis

"Love the use 1x1 bricks as the characters in the vehicle, you don't see that much in the calendar and that provides some newness!"

With as much flexibility as there is now in the Brickset definition of a minifig ("standard," Friends, Duplo, bigfigs, brick-built, microscale/trophy, battle-droid style), I have to wonder whether eventually each stack of 3 studs will count as a "brick-built microfig or nanofig."
