Up-scaled Racing Driver revealed!
Posted by Huw,
A new set in the series of 6-scale minifigs has been revealed at LEGO.com. 40819 Up-scaled Racing Driver Minifigure is the fifth such figure, following 76393 Harry Potter & Hermione Granger, 40504 A Minifigure Tribute and 40649 Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure.
I have to say, I think it's a bit boring and a strange choice of figure to up-scale given there are far more interesting and iconic ones that could have been picked instead.

I love the idea of these sets, but the choices (other than 40504) have just been so boring. Even Harry & Hermione had way too much black and gray to make it a fun building experience, I ended up reselling that one.
My only gripe with it is the lack of light transparent blue visor.
It’s an intriguing idea; I’d love to learn how they settled on this particular subject matter, even if it’s not something I’m personally invested in. An earlier era of Lego race car drivers may have proved more attractive.
I'm still salty about being unable to buy the 40504-1 Redbeard Pirate Captain.
You have to think that they were probably trying a spaceman first - given that this is just a backpack away from it - though perhaps given the relatively single palette of them barring the chest logo perhaps this was considered a better idea? I quite like it!
Dang-it, if you are doing one with a helmet on make it classic space!
This is cool — probably not going to get it, but still cool.
I can't wait for all the racing car related sets to end. I have zero interest in this set. If it were a classic spaceman or something castle related I'd be throwing my money at them.
You guys know that this is probably releasing because of the F1 partnership right? Racing? Or am I seeing patterns where they arent?

I look forward to seeing all the CS guys (myself included) bankrupt themselves building oversized Every Spaceman Is Awesome displays! :D

Classic space is what we all want for sure!
I figure they test the waters with other on theme choices and when they realize the need, they will finally release more wanted designs. If they released a spaceman or castle figure immediately, then they'd have nothing to build up to.

I think theme-spanning subject this year is F-1 (it was space last year). We are probably going to see that subject matter expressed in a lot of different product types.
Should have been Rocket Racer!
Now he needs a race car to fit in :D .... oh my!
Odd choice. Is this recreating an actual minifig? I think what looks off to me is that the decorations are too small and fiddly, they're not really upscaled enough.
I can't believe I'm finally one of the people saying this classic Brickset refrain, but I really think this is one case where the Classic Space/Pirates/Castle theme would be the best choice. The upscaled minifigs seem like they'd appeal to adults more than kids. Although I freely admit that I could be talking absolute nonsense.
It’s a cool looking figure, albeit a little random in terms of the figures they could’ve chosen. A space or castle minifigure would do nicely.
Dude, this looks amazing.
Makes perfect sense given the F1 partnership.
Looks great as well!
Why not classic space.

I'm with you, Spaceman but it would be 95% one colour and then which, Red, White, Yellow etc.
Imagine a massive set with different colours so you could choose, or even different plates or stickers octan, space, etc
Don't tell me this one received all printed pieces while the super exclusive LEGO House Redbeard could only get stickers. :(
Also, why not include a Classic Space alternate model (torso print)?
Weird but I kind of like it. Presumably the intention is to touch on the City theme and maybe they didn't want to go with a cop for...reasons, so the choice makes sense to me. Might get it, since it's something interesting that doesn't cost $300.
I think its this fig CTY0389
Would've loved the spaceman but they missed that boat last year, apart from that Creator build of an astronaut. But, as mentioned by another poster, this is the F1 promotion/cross-over year so makes sense that a race car driver would be used which also represents the City Theme.
This is not a classic minifigure, it was introduced in 2013. Odd choice except for the F1 tie-in.
Do want.
Lego must know the only one we're all waiting for is a classic spaceman... right?

Is less than 1% approximately 100%?
I think it is a great choice for another set like this as the colours stand out really well and, as 2025 appears to be the Year of Lego Racing, it makes sense.
That said, I imagine a Classic blue Spaceman will appear eventually.
That helmet feels very low on the head. Seems odd you can see so much chin and so little forehead. Possibly because of the hidden easter egg? But if an easter egg makes the display model look worse... not sure if I'm on board.
The torso seems odd. Yes, it ties into racing. But with the classic smiley face, I would have expected a torso that matches. Just an Octan logo, perhaps, like the figure in set 1990
I love the concept of these, but a blue or red classic space figure does seem like the next logical step, and one I might actually want to buy

I think that’s probably it, although it doesn’t explain why they chose this era to draw upon. The Pirates figure didn’t draw from Barracuda Bay, for example.
I mean, I like the idea of them, and I will probably get this if it gets discounted, but I have to say, I would be more inclined to say 'I would definitely buy this', were it a spaceman or fright knight or witch...
I was very curious what they’d do for a visor on these if they ever made a helmet. Now we know.
I love these as an idea, but the choice of characters and availability is just completely mind-boggling to me. I can't wrap my head around why Captain Redbeard was a Lego House-exclusive; Just looking at the resale prices, there is clearly a substantial market for that set. But it's still behind a very high wall.
This set looks good, but a racer, even in the 'Year of Racing' or whatever they're calling it, is pretty far down the list of desirable "megafigure" characters. Where's a classic spaceman? Majisto? The first policeman minifig? These are cool, but every one that has been released has either been a "neat but not who I want" character, or made very difficult to obtain, and I don't get why.
Hell, make these like modulars. Put out one a year. This guy can be 2025's, fine. But give me a red spaceman next year.
Sure I won’t be alone in asking for an upscaled Classic Space bigfig or a Boba Fett bigfig
This is amazing I love it!
Octan is really scrambling after moving away from Oil and Gas
I like it, but crucially it has been long enough since the last one. Too many too quickly, and I'll get more picky.

Second.
I can't believe we're back to stickered minifig torsos! (slaps face)
The strangely squat helmet immediately made me see this as a template for an X-Men Sentinel
They would look cool if you bought all of them, but just one of these guys on their own would look weird.
LEGO really needs to do one of these of 8683-3 Caveman or one of the other cavemen, so you can use it as a giant in a Castle setting.
Next, please make an up-scaled minidoll.
Well, I don’t want it, but I love the concept. I am big fan of the Ant-Man figurer from 76051. Would be nice to see a full The Avengers set if they can capture their figure and details correctly.

Whoa, there! Blenny first, Benny second. Maybe third, if I can pull off a dark-purple one…
https://brickshelf.com/gallery/PurpleDave/Humor/blenny.jpg
Did anyone notice this set is $55? And they have increased the price of 40649 to $55 as well.
Considering hiow these are constructed.....I just wish they would make a whole bunch of smaller sets with like just the torso, the legs, the head, in a way you could create your own huge minifig. Just like you would with actual minifigs. And hey, also make some upscaled accessory sets!
I do have 40649 and really like it, but I feel they could do so much more with this concept.
As for this particular one...the whole Octan thing started during my dark ages, so can't say this does much for me. For most part it looks fine I guess, though the helmet feels quite a bit off.
Good thing lord business didn't command such formidable henchmen.
I need a Johnny Thunder one.
There’s a spaceman MOC where the helmet sits almost perfectly. Chin area is more accurate here, but overall it is disappointing in comparison.
I really like that it's the Octan driver, it ties in with the F1 racing they are doing. He will look over all my SC sets, standing tall & proud. A fitting statue to honor the vehicles powered with Octan fuel.

Pretty sure it's printed, like the other upscaled figs, it even goes to the edge of the element and has no rendered sticker definition from what we can see.
This is great for the folks who want it. I hope they continue this for future releases like a castle knight or classic space figure.

Or Benny
I might be in the minority here, but I absolutely love this! I have a bit of an obsession with LEGO's Octan offerings (which I've written about before), so I'll definitely be picking this up.
Please LEGO, do a Galactus up-scaled figure stat!
My first thought is "Oh I can use the arms and legs for an upscale of my sigfig"
I don't know if that idea is worth $55 tho.
As random as it is, I don't mind LEGO choosing this over a figure with less printed details, like a classic spaceman.
As for the set, it's really cool and interesting, but man 55$ for an up-scaled minifigure... I'd rater pick up 40649 for an idetical price that has a normal minifigure, a funny function and almost the same piece count. As for the choice, here I agree too, because there are far more popular and iconic minifigures (Class-ehm-ic-ehm-Space-ehm-man-ehm-ehm-ehm). It's great if the decorated elements are prints though. Only the review will tell though... (But I wouldn't mind putting 40469 and this one beside each other though)

SPACESHIP!!!!!
This is great!
Wouldn’t be my first choice of big-fig …. Or even my 50th!!…. But I’ll pick it up when on sale, to go with the others (I own Harry & Hermione, and the upscale LEGO fig - will track down Redbeard at some point…..!)
I can see why they did it (F1 tie-in), and it’s also interesting in that there’s 3 primary colours (red, green, white), plus yellow and some dark gray - it would be boring if almost all one colour!
Everybody's asking for a Classic Spaceman, and while I certainly want that too, I also want more licensed up-scaled figures than just 76393. A Darth Vader that could duplicate the two-piece minifigure helmet would be awesome.
@Cearthenn said:

I don't think so. This one's helmet looks like a Classic Spaceman's helmet. and the torso printing is different. It also uses the classic smiley, which CTY0389 didn't use.
The shape of the helmet doesn't even look that good compared to some of the up-scale MOCs and MODs of the upscale fig, on Rebrickable.
It's not even the best of the Octan Torso prints :(
Disappointed, as I have all the other upscale figs.
I think this looks superb and will be very popular. I'm sure Classic Space and Castle are already on the schedule. Wouldn't make any sense to peak too early! Also it wouldn't surprise me to see a generic one released at some point (à la 41597)

How about they just do a single Avengers set, showing the character in his Giant-Man form instead? Then it'll be in scale with the rest of 76051 (although you'll have to hide your Ant-Man figure).
This series is crying out for one of the more colorful classic space figures like Futuron or Spyrius or something.
(Of course I would love an original classic space or Blacktron I figure too - just trying to go with a more colorful option given some of the complaints above about past figures)
My wish list for the next one...
An up-scaled Galactus set w/ Fantastic Four minifigs:
- Mr. Fantastic w/ long arms. Include regular arms torso, and long/tall legs (ala' Avatar) to swap out.
- Invisible Woman w/partial transparent legs. Include regular legs to swap out and clear discs (ala' Dr. Strange) for her force fields and one large transparent clear disc to stand on.
- Human Torch. Full flame-on minifig, plus a regular minifig of Johnny Storm. Include flame 'effects' (ala' Capt. Marvel's mini accessories), and 'flame' legs ala' Dream Witch's 'ghost' legs.
- The Thing, a nice big fig.
This would sell out!
It would be The World's Greatest Comic Lego Set!

I agree, i think Captain Redbeard is the one figure that actially works in the best capacity of this theme. Seems to be a haed act to follow since none of the five come up to the satisfying level of colour and detail.

Well, we can hope. Collections are built on hope.
None of the pictures show it but I hope he has a normal size minifigure inside his head to pilot him around like 40649 did, preferably in a racing car style cockpit
I see a lot of folks asking for a classic space figure, but I think a Futuron, M-Tron or Blacktron II figure would work better given the extra detail on the torsos and the more varied colours in the constructions.

And I think Blacktron I would work better, given my desire to have a giant Blenny.
Not gonna lie, odd pick, but cool! I still haven't picked up the Bob one...

That could also work - and would probably be much cheaper.
Quite a weird and random choice (especially given the mis-matched combination).
I would have prefered OCT012 or OCT026 if they wanted to make something Octan themed in this scale.

They have! 75682 and 76780 both are exactly that (and one is a two-pack, so they've technically done three.)
Thinking about this years maintheme i get why they have choosen this racecar driver instead of a classic space upscaled minifigure. A space version should be available since last year though.
Anyways, i think i'll get it if my wife doesnt hold me back..
I will wait for the castle figure, maybe they can even add a horse which would be cool!
Anyone who wants an upscale Spaceman, I built this. And it's amazing !

The helmet/face ration looks a lot better on those instructions. I'm guessing they were going for the more modern helmet style https://brickset.com/minifigs/oct003/octan-white-logo-green-legs-red-helmet-trans-light-blue-visor rather than the classic space shaped helmet.
The main problem with this is that it's made me even more keen to get hold of 40504. So, double RRP from eBay or a trip to Denmark!

Mine is mostly built on the sofa, but you do you.
I like this set very much!
When I built my 6x spaceman (Pete from 21109) I included a moveable brick-built visor. It’s transparent, but it’s not very see-through, if you know what I mean. https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/forums/topic/118550-midi-figs-from-great-western-brickshow-14-who-knows-m/
Thanks, Huw, for sharing.

I'm absolutely with you here! Especially the classic design of RR from the game; the modernised ones are nice, but they still don't *quiiiiite* hit the mark for me. Give me his classic smirk, his classic colours, his classic long hair framing his face (I know why City Stuntz turned it into sideburns, because Lego doesn't print overlapping hair onto faces anymore, but still...!)
That said, no Lego budget here at present; but I've loved the idea of giant brick-built minifigures since I saw 3723 in the catalogues as a kid, so these are definitely down my street if they make ones of any characters that interest me. My no. 1 choice would be one of the Rock Raiders in this style...
I guess the subject matter is due to all the F1 sets this year. I’d prefer a Classic Spaceman. It wouldn’t need a visor then ;-)
Perhaps another factor for choosing design is that it can be argued that it is gender neutral?

In a way, yes, but not what I would call ‘up-scaled minidolls’’ compared to these up-scaled minifigures. I already own the Wednesday one. Then, again, the mentioned 76051 should also be counted as a set which it isn’t.
Johnny Thunder,
He's our man.
LEGO can do it
Yes they can!
Still waiting for an Antman in this style. The action figure style from New Civil War battle is not what I want for a Giant man.

I grabbed a copy on Ebay. Was it overpriced? Yes, but for me, it was worth it. The build is fantastic, and was worth overpaying for, imo. Check on Bricklink too, prices may be a little more attainable.
