A new set due for launch on April 1st has been revealed at LEGO.com. The 184-piece 40817 Yellow Travel Suitcase builds what you'd expect it to, plus a range of other miniaturised travel essentials, such as a camera, passport and toothbrush.

It's unclear whether they all fit inside the hinged suitcase, but it looks unlikely...

This gotta be a joke, right?

Stickers of stickers.

By in Germany,

April 1st?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

It is hard to imagine the circumstances under which I would choose to pack an unwrapped sandwich in my luggage. The space could be better used for a fresh pair of socks.

The suitcase is cute, however.

By in United States,

That’s one bigol toothbrush

By in Ukraine,

You know what... Definitely will buy! Such a cute little set! I've got an exact lego passport + 31147 Retro Camera which is downsclaed here, so I guess this is a mushthave for me!

I thought it was a hairbrush. OTOH, at least if your mouth could take that brush as a toothbrush you could eat that sandwich fairly easily...

Gonna be honest…I kinda like it. On the one hand I’m used to sets of this size costing $20 these days, so $15 doesn’t seem as bad. The fact that the handle can extend is a feature I would have expected to be left out at this scale, so I like that it works. The mini builds are surprisingly charming (even the toothbrush) and I really like that Lego brick passport and long detailed ticket. Add in a Lego logo piece that normally we’d only be able to get from Lego Store models, and I’m sold - in big part because between the yellow and the big blue pieces, I think I could picture rebuilding this set into a mini Lego store mall-style pop-up kiosk, with the wheels becoming a stock moving cart and one of the mini builds representing a master builder decoration statue.

So yeah, I’m finding myself more sold on this one than on several of the recent sets in the price range (especially given that these days I can rarely afford any Lego sets *outside* this price range without steep discounts).

And why? I don't see any problems with it? And if you mean stickers... Well, that's a core function of the set, so... I wouldn't blame TLG here.

Why?

By in United States,

This is so cute! I especially love the Billund Airport luggage tag. This set seems like the perfect size for a kid to take with them on their first big trip.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

That’s what Lego takes your cash away in.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Yawn. Lego is releasing some really weird sets. Just hold back a bit, Lego.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Imagine someone somewhere in the world travelling to Billund, Denmark, carrying the passport, boarding pass, toothbrush, photograph camera and lunch in the carry-on, just to find out that it is oversized, has overweight or simply that there is no space available in the aircraft overhead bin, having to check the carry-on (hence the BLL tag) and forgetting all those items inside.

Except for the camera, which will arrive in pieces, it is not a big issue. Unless you check the carry-on before passing security, or if you check it while boarding the aircraft and having to pass immigration after arrival

Love it... Surprised it's not sprouting flowers like everything else lately!

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I'm afraid my LEGO purchases won't fit in this while abroad...

Gravatar

The only question is: How does it look next to the up-scaled minifigure?

Well, first of all: April 1st...

But besides, who is this set for? I don't see much play value for kids, pretty sure my nephews and niece would pick about any other €15 set over this. And do nowadays kids even recognize that as a camera? For adults then? I am an avid traveller, but can't say this set interests me one bit. If one thing, it makes me wonder why they stopped the Postcard series which had the same price.

Okay, the mini-build for the camera looks fine, but not gonna buy the set just for that. And while I can see the blue parts on the inside as the lining, why those green pieces? And why the white pieces to hold the wheels?

As for the stickers, think those tickets could have been (reusable!) prints, but I honestly don't mind those for on the suitcase. If one thing, I wish they had included many more for some proper personalization, like a bunch of flags or famous landmarks.

Easily within Ryanair carry-on restrictions ;-)

By in Norway,

On first look I thought it was yet another piece of "gear"/tat and couldn't understand why it warranted an article...

Gravatar

Not STAMP but MSOOP (Multiple Sticker On One Piece)

Fun little set though.

Gravatar

Thought that was real luggage for a second lol

Wonder of wonders! Miracle of miracles!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It looks fun, and cheap enough for that to suffice.

My one critique is that it seems like the interior could easily be one stud deeper, if the large panel piece was recessed and used as the back wall.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

The LEGO Passport tile is a nice touch; it's a reference to the LEGO passports you can get in your local stores!
It also appears to be a printed tile.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Not really carried away by this.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The items not fitting in the suitcase is actually kinda funny. We've all been there.

Not sure who this set is for, though? Avid travellers? Or the very few tourists that actually own a yellow suitcase?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the addition of the travel accessories. Who doesn't carry cheeseburger in their suitcase? XD

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s very cute.
Looks like everything fits except the sandwich.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's a neat little set, and the camera is impressive for so few parts. Perfect stocking stuffer material.

The toothbrush is weirdly huge, though.

31147 says yes?

@TeriXeri said:

MSOOP just doesn't roll off the tongue like STAMP does, though. I propose PHOOS, or Piece Having Over One Sticker, and pronounced like the "fuß" in fußball.

Looking carefully at the photos, the top handle is retractable, like a real wheeled suitcase. The offset of the rear interior panel is to create space to allow the handle to retract.

That's one set I very much wonder if it's mostly bought by/for kids, or by adults for themselves.
(one of my favorite sets of last year, but my nephews and niece couldn't care less...they rather demolish every other set I have...)

Marvel of marvels. Oops. That's the set two articles down.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I want to know if my lettuce has been shorted a quarter, or a full half?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Forget the toothbrush... at that size it becomes a full face brush.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just the five items? The toothbrush is only five studs long, and the cavity is six studs wide (minus a plate thickness once you get inside the panels). I could mock it up in LDraw to prove it, but it looks like everything will fit without even being particularly challenging. I’m sure that’s precisely why the toothbrush has such a stubby handle.

However, I’d be much more likely to pack clothes than a passport. I’ve been to two other counties in my life, and have never been issued a passport. In fact, the first time (possibly two) I travelled outside of the US, I only had my parents vouching for me as identification. I know I can still legally cross the Canadian border with just my driver’s license, and probably the same for Mexico. But I couldn’t handle travel of any duration that requires a suitcase without even a single change of clothes.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Funny, we often say that the only two absolutely essential items for travel are your passport and your bank card.....
(and considering I once had my passport stolen and once left it at home, I know a bit too well how problematic travel without a passport is....)

It's not a 3-in-1 set, so it gets away with it.

If the scale's right, then I absolutely must have this set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is something Lego should use as promotion, for anyone 12 and under on flights to Billund, free on the plane as a nice treat for the kids. Put in some promotional material with coupons, or just advertising going to the Lego House, etc.

I doubt they'll be giving it away for free but I have little doubt that it'll be a strong seller at Lego-themed vacation destinations like the Lego House and Legoland Parks.

Gravatar

I’m low on yellow so it seems like a good pick up.

Gravatar
By in Japan,

That mini Lego passport (which i have in real-life) is adorably cute! For the price i think it's a nice stocking filler type of gift and is interesting enough. Just a bit too cheap to have stickers (again!) though. I miss the days of ONLY printed bricks and pieces.

Stickers representing actual stickers on the case, I have no problem with. They’re supposed to be stickers. My issue is more that the passport is printed, when not every store hands out the red passports. All US stores issue blue passports, since that’s the color used in the US. I know post-Brexit UK has a different color than the EU, and there are also nations that issue black passports (though I don’t know if any of them also have LEGO Stores).

Gravatar
By in United States,

The passport would be cool, but it looks like it's a sticker?

I'm curious as to why someone is traveling with an unwrapped sandwich and a novelty size toothbrush?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m probably in the minority, but to me if all the stuff doesn’t fit IN the suitcase that is a product failure.

Looks cute, though.

Typically the joke announcements are announced *on* April 1.

Maybe in the US. Over here unfortunately more and more companies make silly announcements in the weeks leading to April 1st (or worse: Announcements of upcoming announcements....). And considering Lego is not an American company......

Lego makes lots of models of things that are part of daily life. The Botanicals line is nothing but that, and it's very popular.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

All Lego is just a bit of fun. Some that people like and some that people don't. What's really bizarre is getting stressed over the reason for a sets existence, or how anybody else could dare to like it if you don't!
