The Lord of the Rings: Sméagol & Déagol

©2025 LEGO Group

As we patiently await the official reveal of 10354 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire, the set that will presumably be the gift with purchase to those who buy it as soon as it's released has been revealed at LEGO.com.

The 181-piece 40761 The Lord of the Rings: Sméagol & Déagol depicts the scene where Déagol is pulled into the river at the Gladden Fields by a large fish, then discovers the One Ring in the mud. I'll leave the details of what happens next for you to research.

It's definitely worth buying the set early for, whenever it's released...

By in United Kingdom,

How has Deagol got a minifig before Eowyn, Faramir, Denethor etc...

Also quite a dark scene to recreate...

They better hurry up on that.
I will need to take the morning off work to get to my local store to get it

By in United Kingdom,

I dont really care for LoTR

But daaaaamn, this is a great GWP! I might seek it out second hand!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

GWPs that recreate a scene in mini format are very good.

Could be the best GWP released this year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is quite possibly the darkest and most awful moment of all the books. What in the actual consideration of appropriate material for PLAY caused Lego design to think this was a good idea?

HEY!
Deagol is pulled into the river!
Swim to the bottom and find the Ring!
Quick! Smeagol jumps out of the boat to murder his friend and take the Ring!
You create the murder!

By in Belgium,

Great GWP, it'll be a great incentive to purchase 10354 early (despite the fact I'm disappointed it has an open back, but that was to be expected given the other LOTR sets…).

Hopefully the website won't crash, because I don't want to wait until 2 a.m. to place an order, or wake up at 6 a.m. and see that all the stock is gone…

By in Puerto Rico,

Man, this is a dark set....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Isn't this what AFOL's have been asking for, a GWP that's from an important scene that won't otherwise be made (even if LOTR got a full wave). It can mostly be recreated from existing parts if people miss out. It captures the scene perfectly and looks great.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

One of the few sets that actually justifies its 18+ rating?

Not sure it quite works in showing that Smeagol is under water - and that's definitely not a large fish - but it is quite smart looking.

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO hates to put in modern military vehicles but has a specific scene where one character murders his friend by strangling him?
Of all the scenes in LotR to choose from to create vignettes they thought this was good?

They canceled Temple of Doom set but here you get a murder scene for free.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

There are leaks of the backside of the Shire set and that is a bit of a let down, especially since the price will not be €200 but €270

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it weird that the GWP has been revealed before the official set?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Such a gruesome set to depict. I don't mind it, but they could have taken out the party tree or the horse cart and put that as theGwp making the main model bigger.

Gravatar
By in United States,

You know... they're never going to let me get this.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Of all the potential options for vignettes from LOTR…………. and despite the setting of the Gladden fields, no nods to my favourite flower.
Hopefully this means there’s plans for filling in some of the gaps in the character line up via retail sets (or at least one can dream).

Easy pass for me. Glad I don't feel rushed to buy 10354 on day one.

Glad I'm not the only one. Éowyn and Faramir deserve better. Denethor, on the other hand....

All joking aside, we really should've had a Denethor minifig before Déagol or even Sméagol, too.

That way we could instead complain about how the set was incomplete without the GWP, forcing you to buy it at full price instead of waiting for a discount.

Previously, I doubted that LEGO would ever make a Minas Tirith set, due to the burning scene, the launching-heads-from-catapults scene, etc. Now, I have no doubt in LEGO's courage. As long as it isn't a post-WWII military vehicle or the Temple of Doom, LEGO will do anything for the fans.

It's not Smeagol under the water, but rather Deagol. Deagol is the actual initial finder of Sauron's ring. It's Smeagol who decides that he'd rather have the ring, if not by the easy way, then by the hard way!

Yes, I have faith too now for MT, hopefully next year :-)

By in United States,

Thankfully it looks to be reused parts for the figures (maybe a new head print), so nothing really exclusive about it.

I'm torn. I don't really want to get the Shire set yet and I don't need this GWP, so I don't know what to do. I love LOTR LEGO and I otherwise don't like turning my back toward any of it. But I tend to not build GWP anyway and just keep them sealed (which is pointless since I'm not selling them) or I part them out which again is pointless for owning it since I won't use much of the pieces anyway.

By in United States,

What happens next? Why they celebrate Sméagol's birthday, of course! It's all quite heartwarming.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@bnic99:
We got a scene where Frodo got a wound that never heals. And a scene where Pippen puts everyone in mortal danger by desecrating a grave. And a scene where the hero is about to be juiced by an eight-legged car. And a subtle nod to encouraged cannibalism. And a few scenes reminding us of Serkis’ simply excruciating Gollum accent.

@Rimefang:
You’re going with that over having a finger bitten off (and probably swallowed) over a bit of bling?

@ShinyBidoof:
It’s Déagol who swims with the fishes. And then swims with the fishes. Sméagol is the one with 80’s metal band hair.

@Andrusi:
Yes, the most important consideration is always giving AFOLs an excuse to throw a tantrum.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

One of the scariest scenes in the franchise. The battles were not as terrifying as their fight, and his transformation into Gollum.

I suppose it depends on which version you watch. The first time I went in the theater, it was the one where, instead of the ring catching Déagol with a fish, young Obi-Wan catches the fish with a ring. And then I’m like, “What the heck? I don’t remember Ewan McGregor being cast for this movie.” That’s when I realized that, in my rush to make that showtime, I’d gone into the wrong theater, but by then I’d missed so much of LotR3 that I said screw it and stayed to watch Tim Burton’s Big Fish instead. I had to wait until after a trip to catch the third film, as a result.

We’ll probably get the next most disturbing scene for a GWP with a Minas Tirith set: Denethor eating cherry tomatoes.

I think Temple of Doom was more problematic because of its take on colonialism and child labor/abuse than for the gruesome murders.

By in Canada,

This is the Ringwraith GWP on steroids. We saw what happened on the aftermarket with that particular GWP last year. Now they've upped the ante with two (2) exclusive figs in this GWP. TLG has us in a vice and they know it. The aftermarket gouging of GWP's only hammers that point home. Guess I'm out $300+ on April 2nd. Nice knowing you all.

Nope, I am. 25 years ago, when people were heaping praise on how realistic Gollum was, I was the guy pointing out that the CGI wasn’t any more groundbreaking than the work done on Jar-Jar, and that the voice was even worse. Haven’t changed my opinion in that regard.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So these are existing minifig parts? I guess that explains why they're so inaccurate. I just rewatched the scene in question. I did misremember the length of Déagol's hair, which ends at about his jawline, while Sméagol's is around six inches longer. So they got the hair right. But Déagol's overalls should be dark-brown, maybe black, and the bib should go up to mid-chest. The shirt looks like a very basic homespun material, _is_not_layered_, and should be reddish-brown. I can't even tell what colors Sméagol is wearing, they're so dark, but he also didn't appear to be wearing layers like this minifig depicts. But they did get the hair right.

Nope.
It's typical Lego hypocrisy.
It's a fantasy fictional adventure movie where Indy, Shortround saves the kids.

Here, with the freebie, the scene plays out with two friends fishing and one strangles the other violently.
You think that's good for kids, rather than a fun mine cart chase set (which they already did in '09) where you have water topple onto the bad guys.
Oh boy.

LEGO will also be rolling out something related to The Minifigure Factory. Available for a limited time, you can customize your minifigure with exclusive Lord of the Rings torso design. This will only be online for US and Canada and select stores in EMEA, AMS and China.

Makes you wonder if things would have progressed differently if it had been Sméagol who went swimming instead of Déagol. They’re supposed to be related, but apparently not twin brothers, so Déagol probably couldn’t have made the same “birthday present” claim, but maybe he’d have come up with a different excuse for why it should be given to him, or simply gone straight for taking it by force. And maybe Bilbo would have found a different Gollum hiding in Goblintown.

Serkis based his accent off the Peter Woodthorpe impression in the BBC LOTR, which was in turn based off the few recordings we have of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien himself reading LOTR/Hobbit. So it's a second hand accent, but hardly excruciating.
Well, I guess it is excruciating, but only insomuch as Gollum has an excruciating voice, and not because it's inaccurate.
