New images of minifigs in Vending Machine

Posted by ,

LEGO has published names and pictures of the 16 minifigs that come in 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine on Instagram.

Many pay homage to classic LEGO themes and look like reason enough to buy the set when it's released on June 1st at LEGO.com.

View the gallery after the break.

There seem to be duplicates of the images for Rob and the Ideas Designer, and no images for the Fabuland minifigs

In the caption for Gold Blaster Classic Space, my first thought was, "they misspelled @Huw".

As Brickfanatics pointed out, it's quite ironic that their buddgie-smugglers show more skin than Leia's slave outfit on the barge.

Gold is space banking, Teal is internet security.

LEGO Interns strike again

First, they go with (Peter) GRIFFIN instead of GRYPHON or GRIFFON and then they chuff the climate change conscious with "ready to raise some sea-level chaos".

They’re all recognised spellings of the same mythical creature though, right?

I’m more interested in when Lego started calling that colour Teal…!

By in United States,

It’s Ernie/Elmer not Elton/Edward. Ernie wore only blue, Edward never wore blue, only yellow and red

Also, TLG is really skimping for an $180 set. I mean, no dual-molded legs on Griffins or Krakens, when they should, no arm printing anywhere (looking at you Camilla) and ZERO new head prints!? No new molds either… I love them, but they just aren’t CMF quality. I sure do Hope they end up on PaB but I’ll have to be quick… they sure will sell out as fast as Mountain fortress :(

By in United States,

Everyone's hyper-focused on the classic spacemen and the knights... meanwhile, I'm glad to see the return of Bo'sun Will and the first physical debut* of Camilla, both of them all grown up and still ready for swashbuckling pirate adventures!

*A brown-haired variant of the 2009 "Admiral's Daughter" minifigure was previously used to represent Camilla in LEGO Battles. However, this video game is the only instance where they're regarded as the same character, with a LEGOLAND stunt show referring to the "Admiral's Daughter" as a new character Miranda Valentina instead.

Last I checked, the highest altitude that a kraken would normally be raising chaos at would be sea level, and coincidentally that's where the most people tend to be. Other than the use of the words "raise" and "sea level" in the same sentence, it really doesn't have any implications for "chuff[ing] the climate change conscious".

By in Germany,

Wow - an official Camilla minifig?

Though the fact I didn't recognize her at all, is... less exciting.

I give them though that it explains the tan uniform. However that attire seems uncharacteristic of her, even in an older representation.

I still like they remembered this. And they mentioned Will too (the two were seemingly interested in each other, at least it was implied a bit).

If you don't know at all what I'm talking about, look up set 6255 's instructions on Peeron or whichever site you prefer.

EDIT:
To be honest I would not have the slightest idea how to represent her in minifig form and match the 1989 style at all. Both colors and design were a really ill suited for that era.
Same goes for the Castle "princess" Rusty - a design that sticked close to the illustration would look very off amongst the minifigs of that time.

In case it wasn't clear that Lego is targeting "collectors" more than those who want to"play well". People do realize that Lord Business (the parent) in The Lego Movie amassing Minifigures and shoving them into display cases was supposed to represent uncreative and undesirable behavior? But of course Lego themselves encourages this behavior now, quite typical of massive corporations to want to be the villain and the hero in the same breath...

Maybe they’ve pledged themselves to the service of Sir Griffin Dunne? Just kidding. He’s American. Can’t be knighted. Actually, all three appear to be legitimate variants. Gryphon, of course, comes from Greek, while Griffon is Old French. I’m guessing Griffin is then an English variant (used by Sir John Mandeville in the 14th century). But at least John Milton’s “Gryfon” never took off.

This set was voted for by fans… so even if this could be said for other sets, it can't be true here. Also, I'm not sure that is a relevant argument, anyway, when the whole point of the set is to release and build the minifigures.

According to the ancient wisdom (aka the Peeron Color Chart, last updated…possibly 2011?), it doesn’t appear they ever did. Teal is the LDraw name, Dark Turquoise is the Bricklink name, and the incredibly boring LEGO name is…Bright bluish green.

http://peeron.com/inv/colors

However, there was a whole big thing about how 8115 could be built with either Teal or Dark-Purple, and the other color would need to be purged from the active color chart. I believe it was Mark Stafford who had to choose, and, I mean, some choices just make themselves, right? Anyways, Mark came from the AFOL community, so when explaining this, he did refer to it as Teal.

For whatever it's worth, Camilla in the old comics and books would wear a red sash bow as part of her dress and two red bows in her hair. This particular camera angle and pose makes them hard to see, but the minifig in this set also has a red sash and a red bow on her torso. It's a small but appreciated nod to her original design.

Her hair piece also has a small pin for accessories. A bright red part 11618 might fit?

Of course, I do wonder how they might have represented a more faithful adaptation of her original design...

Hmm nice spot, didn't notice that. I'm assuming that hair isn't new for the set anyways? So the bow tie will surely fit.

"Island of La Sabatina - 10 years after the Golden Medallion:
After Admiral Woodhouse sent her corrupt uncle to prison for cheating the king, Camilla Broadside finally decided to join the Dark Shark II's crew, adapting a more battle-fit attire.
To mock the Admiral she took inspiration from the Imperial Guard's own uniforms, albeit with a color more befitting her formerly preferred style."

Or something like this... :D

For this comment to make sense, you have to ignore the entire vending machine build, which not only looks like an interesting build but also has moving parts and (based on the online images so far) quite interestingly built functionality inside. You also have to ignore the fact that many folks who buy this will remove and assemble some or all of the minifigures and use them in display scenes or other forms of play. You also have to ignore that the structure of the concept and the set enables you to swap in your own minifigures and... play with them using the machine's functionality.

And of course you have to ignore the fact that while Lego is of course taking advantage of the minifigure collector's market, that market was created by and is driven by AFOLs. Yes, people are influenced by corporations' actions, but one look at the critiques of Lego for not including dual molded legs here - or the incredibly dramatic AFOL outrage when Lego includes the "wrong" variation of a Star Wars figure, or includes a rare Star Wars figure variant only in an expensive UCS set, or includes a rare Star Wars figure variant in a cheap playset, thereby ruining the value of it for the folks who bought the UCS set - should be enough to remind us that if AFOLs want to know the cause of excess collecting mania with Lego, they need only look into the mirror.

Star Wars is predominantly about characters. That's why people care. Sure, the secondary market has become quite the news driver. Lego profits massively from it.

There isn't anything Lego makes that it has exclusivity over except the minifigure. That is the only unique thing about their brand. You'd expect them to make it the focus. I'm continually shocked (and, sometimes, "outraged") that they don't do more to make their minifigures special.

Of course, our good professor was just being cheeky. Unless... they really do exist and he has some kind of LUG-based knowledge of how to get one relatively inexpensively and before everyone else find out!! (pant, pant) ;)

BTW, Gold w/ comms and blaster sound like space banker to me. Teal's wrench, doughnut, and coffee should probably be maintenence of some kind.

I know how Lego Ideas works. That doesn't change the fact that Lego deliberately chose new, rare figures to put into it. Sure, the fans chose the dispenser machine, but Lego took it a step further and targeted the "collector" as well. I get it, everyone loves their little hits of nostalgia, but there's definitely a way to reference classic themes without resorting to relying on rarity. For example: instead of making a cool Lego space throwback set a gift with purchase, they could just release it as a regular set, what a concept!

Also just to clarify, my remark was definitely directed more towards the Lego group for encouraging this behavior, though collectors aren't free from blame. I suppose I'm just disappointed to see so many hobbies flip from fun kids toy to adult collect-a-thons, and they are not the only company that does this. It happened with Pokemon TCG and Hot Wheels too. People buying entire cases of Hot Wheels looking for Treasure Hunts is just sad. The likelyhood of a kid just finding something rare in the wild is so, well, rare.

Yes, people are influenced by corporations' actions, but one look at the critiques of Lego for not including dual molded legs here - or the incredibly dramatic AFOL outrage when Lego includes the "wrong" variation of a Star Wars figure, or includes a rare Star Wars figure variant only in an expensive UCS set, or includes a rare Star Wars figure variant in a cheap playset, thereby ruining the value of it for the folks who bought the UCS set - should be enough to remind us that if AFOLs want to know the cause of excess collecting mania with Lego, they need only look into the mirror."

There are just too many annoying bricks that LEGO insists on selling in the same box as the precious and collectable minifigures.

Camilla became a full blown pirate and went blond in the sun? I’m glad of all the references, it’s a great collection but appreciate people may want some clearer visual referencing.

Agreed-the mis-spelled ‘Griffon’ is a failure on marketing basics.

LEGO has remade Johnny multiple times in recent years, such that there would hardly be any reason to feature another reference here. He was remade for the LEGO Movie 2 sets, loosely referenced with the CMF Jungle Explorer, and also referenced with the design of a certain City explorer figure in recent sets.

The Kraken Warriors' helmets totally aren't a new, unprinted, Rohan helmet...are they?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Remember how in the early 80s they were so concerned about not including weapons or warfare that they would claim up and down that the second gold spaceman had a landing signal light, or a flashlight, or a scanner, but no, it wasn't a gun, it couldn't be a blaster, no way, these are peaceful spacemen... even though everyone used them as blasters anyways?

(I like astronauts, and I like coffee, but I'm still trying to figure out how the connection between the two is strong enough to claim one of these slots, whether there was a meme, or movie/TV reference, or what. Otherwise, it's hard for this overanalyzing brain to get past the fact that anywhere that there's enough vacuum for air tanks, coffee will boil off or freeze too early to enjoy it, if it doesn't just float off in a zero-gravity environment.)

Kind of fun that the "sea-level" and "decked" wording confirms that those two are meant to be viking-like. Also, I take "C-suite chaos" to mean that they are getting ready to raid rich business managers, who probably need some real-world shaking up anyways!

You often don’t even have to read a whole thread to know a question has been answered. A keyword search using CTRL+F or ‘Find on page’ from the top of the thread will narrow it down. In this case, a search for ‘pab’ will quickly find the first answer.

It's a very personal question. What DOES it mean to make it onto PAB? For me, it's a powerful emotional discharge, a moment of denouement after a long and tense build-up. It's something to be celebrated publicly, but also, a moment deserving of quiet introspection. For do we not all deserve to make it onto PAB? What of those we left behind? What of the forgotten, the disenfranchised, the downtrodden? Why were they... not good enough? And are we, the PAB-selected, ever certain of our position? When will we be voted off? If and when this happens, what does it mean to make it OFF of PAB?

PAB is a journey, and maybe the true meaning of PAB was the friends we made along the way."

I'm pouring out a little beer onto the ground for my po' off-PaB hommies. Peace!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

You buy eight more balls (those will definitely be available on OPAB). Come Christmas, you stuff all the balls with the advent mini sets and you attach a couple of wreaths on the sides of the machine.

If Teal Donut Spaceman does well, he will be promoted to Space Police. Maybe just because of this, the Teal Donut Spaceman might become the seven dwarf's Dopey or the Homer Simpson of Classic space...

In all likelihood, I will somehow be forced to get this but I sure hope most of these torsos (and tanks and helmets) will be available on OPAB. After 10497, the red torsos were available for only a few days and yet no-one on Bricklink has any large quantities available for sale. I truly think all spaceman colours ever made should be available on OPAB for the simple reason that very soon the whole horde of people who have a strong attachment to these little guys will eventually begin to loose interest in them. I think, maybe wrongly, that soon will be the time for Lego to cash in on those before the true fans get too old and move on - not saying there is an age to stop using Lego but at some point, the fervor is diminishing.

By in Canada,

Omg, the pirate figs being grown-up versions of Bo'sun Will and Camilla is such a cool detail! Particularly since those are both characters who were absent from Barracuda Bay and other modern Pirates sets (and Camilla had never been in sets at all up to this point). The updated designs will fit in great with the older, graying version of Captain Redbeard from Barracuda Bay.

I myself had included a grown-up Bo'sun Will in my remake of Lagoon Lock-Up/Soldiers' Tavern for the Eurobricks "Return of the Classic Pirates" contest a couple years ago ( https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/forums/topic/195911-entry-6267-lagoon-lock-upsoldiers%E2%80%99-tavern-remake/ ), so it's neat to see that LEGO had a similar idea!

I grew up with Paradisa, so have a particular fondness for the two Paradisa figs, especially for the beach bro's eclectic fashion sense (swim briefs, crop top, ball cap, and Tom Selleck mustache), which feel very true to the spirit of the theme. The back printing on the Paradisa figs is also a fun detail I hadn't spotted in the set's initial unveiling!
