Flying Moon Car revealed!
Posted by Huw,
Another set inspired by the winning entry of a LEGO Ideas competition has been revealed, but rather than being a GWP, it'll be available from the Insiders rewards centre.
The 211-piece 40789 Flying Moon Car will be available in exchange for 2,500 points from July 1st.
View more pictures after the break and, as you'll see, it's a very close interpretation of the original submission.

Looks kinda like the Solo movie speeder
If the grey and white bricks on the vehicle were different shades of blue, this would look so much better. As it is, I'd rather put those points towards getting something else.
Wow, crazy how similar it is to the original
The astronauts seem like a poor choice: they’re too modern for what is ultimately a retrofuturistic model.
I like this a lot! Very cute take on Space-type sets for LEGO.

They used existing minifig City Space minifig parts.
I think the suits from like 2019 do fit better with this however :

NO AIRTANKS again? Else pretty good, though.
Cool set, love it!
Too bad they didn't just put it behind a paywall, but had to make it even more convoluted to get it.....
This is better than I expected. I'm not far off the points for it either, but then I would need to make a purchase for the rest, than another to get this with it... oh this system is confusing...
@TeriXeri
I thought the original submission used the orange suit, but obviously not, so I'm a little confused as to what those torsos are then now...

We do need transclear airtanks.
I do however want to learn more about the moldy swiss cheese over which they are flying.
Nice little set. Lovely and smooth, simple and cohesive
Well, I already knew that I would be getting this when it came out, and seeing what the final model looks like only makes me want it even more. I love retro sci-fi. Looking at it puts the Jetsons "flying-car-in-flight" sound effect in my head.
This looks like those 1950's Sci Fy vehicles.
Great build but those bald figs... The2 piece huge helmet exists....
Really wish this was a GWP for better accessibility :(
That's actually pretty cool. I usually save my VIP points for discounts, but I might actually cash-in to get this. 2600 points is a $20 discount, so this is the equivalent of about a $19.23 set. That seems pretty fair for what's here. The car has a cool raygun-punk vibe, and I think it would look awesome with the CMF Retro Spaceman and Spacewoman cruising in it.

I wish I could just buy it, even with points, in store.

I agree somewhat, but interestingly that part was also replaced in 40698, although that may have been because of printing. The element is yet to be catalogued in any 2025 sets, afaik.

my thoughts exactly!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel the unfortunate thing about these points buys is they still end up being the same model as a GWP--they won't ship them to you unless you're already making a purchase, and they won't "put them on a shelf" for you so you can guarantee you have one when you make your next purchase, so you still have to make an order from Lego.com (which is often not the best price) in order to get them. They do have one advantage, though, and that's no price threshold, so at least there's that.

Or the one in 7133, Bounty Hunter Pursuit. It's been a loooong time.

They will put them on a shelf for 60 days, I believe.
Would be nice if Insiders recognised my details & didn't insist on creating a new account rather than just logging in
Love this. Will definitely snag one at some point.
I didn't notice the bald figs at first, but now that's all I Can see.
The vehicle is neat. I don't know if I like the dark bley, but it works. It needs some contrast for sure.
The swiss cheese ground is interesting looking.
Do I want to spend $20 equivalent on this? I don't know.
DAY 1 ... I buy CITY/Police set to get this...

Ever had a convertible? Bald + sunblock (moonblock?) is the way to go. Hair blows everywhere.
I'm betting they used it since the lamp also uses it. Either parts or cost restriction.
Perfect in every respect! Feels like the same sort of era as Gerry Anderson's Supercar. Take my points!
If you stretch out this set to give it two more seats, it might be a good Fantasticar for use with the new Fantastic Four figs from Marvel. Just sayin'!
Second time this week that the Lego company annoys me. First time was the Bricklink-Account merging news, now this nice little set being only accessible via VIP points. Know what Lego? Behalt deinen Kram!
Lego cooked with this! I really wish that this was for sale as a normal set.
It's like a Landspeeder for cool people. I like it.
I gotta say this is the best VIP-points gift Lego has ever released (and of course it wasn't even originally designed by them lol)
Nice model, but I have bunch of MOCs of this sort, I'll pass.
@lordofdragonss said:

It's been a long time since they used the mold; they've almost certainly decommissioned it by now.

Yes it was, it was just based on a model someone else designed.

I like the new space figs, but they're not retro enough for this set and just look bald.
I would also love airtanks with this; especially transclear. That way we can see the oxygen inside!!
Teaser for an upcoming retro-future theme?
Would be cool to do LEGO.
Make it happen capin’.
Love it

Roll on July 1st. 10357, 40788 and 40789. Excellent new release, GWP, and Insider Reward!

GWP = you buy something for $150 now and we give it to you free until we run out 4 hours into promotion
VIP Reward = you buy something for $400 earlier, we give you 2600 points, you redeem 2500 points for code, you buy something else for at least $35 and within 60 days or code and points disappear
$150 vs $435+ and x% of unredeemed codes
Why, whatever will LEGO prefer? :o)

I'm not usually a hater about changes made to IDEAS submissions but the helmet/hair change is almost a deal breaker for me.
I'll seat 71032-11 inside.

Element 61287, it was originally developed for Sandy Cheeks' bubble helmet in the Spongebob theme. The bubble helmet is big enough to fit a minifigure head and a small hair piece, and it locks around the neck.

Ahhh, that's right, 2022, not 2019. I often confuse the two lines since they were released so close together (relatively speaking). That being said, 2024 is even closer, so I guess City Space is kinda a regular thing now.

Actually, I wonder they they hadn't made a 40's/50's style astronaut cmf yet; one with a fishbowl helmet and a flat silver body! A balaclava minifig head would complete this as well would have completed the moon car figs. These heads have been made before, so no excuses.
I do think (like jkb mentioned), even with the not-especially-fitting 2024 City Space bodies, these minifigs could've looked a lot better if they'd used a "minifig wearing a headsock/balaclava/etc." head design rather than just a plain yellow minifig head.
The car is great, but the front grille and windshield were not necessary

MOC up a makeout point for them to park at.
This is a nice space car, Mr. Jetson.
@yellowcastle:
Pretty sure it's not cheese. I remember seeing an ad saying that's the reason we stopped going to the moon.
@mikesray:
Knowing that it might be difficult to obtain a full second copy, I was already thinking of buying the loose parts to build a second copy of just the car, and putting them in it. But now I'm wondering what it would look like with 71046-7 in the driver seat.
@woosterlegos:
Your code is good for 60 days, but there's always going to be a last person to redeem their code. If they've come up short (lost or damaged stock), guess who isn't getting one?
@TheOtherMike:
Minecraft may be the only ongoing theme with an unbroken release history, but Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Dr. Who, and Adventure Time all debuted under Cuusoo/Ideas, and saw additional sets produced using the same IP.
@yellowcastle @PurpleDave
Wasn't that why we stopped going, though? It got all moldy and gross and nobody wanted to touch it anymore?

Interestingly, https://brickset.com/parts/design-39696 is available on Pick-a-Brick, that implies it is in some state of "production", not sure why they wouldn't use it considering this is a pretty substantial downgrade to an otherwise pretty terrific set.
The original color of the vehicle was perfect, it's a shame they changed the shade of blue. One of the main reasons I voted for this set was precisely the color used, I wish we could get some details as to why they ended up choosing the new color.
Guess I'll get my code on the first and buy the Shelby Cobra on the 4th and hope that both the snails (for my wife) and the moon car are still attainable at that time

What was the ORIGINAL color? Earth Blue?
Yes, such a shame we can't modify this build to match our personal preferences.
I suppose we could just cover this build with stickers. Or maybe spraypaint. Maybe, some day in the future, there'll be an even more elegant way of switching out individual pieces.
It's wishful thinking, but I was made for bigger skies.

Light blue, but the release version looks like light azure. Guess they didn't have all parts available in light blue or some higher-up personally prefers azure.

That is not what I have experienced recently. I have been able to add the classic space tic tac toe and the Mario spiny shell to a couple of orders when there was a GWP. Both were in stock long after they first appeared in the Insiders centre, I ordered the codes and used them the same day. I think it was day 4 of the promotion when I placed the order with the Jane Austen GWP.
After readings these comments. I won't buy this set.
Hmmmm, mouldy Swiss cheese base.

21330 uses a pair in clear...somewhere. I was thinking it was a yard light, but I don't see one in any of the set photos. It took a while, but I finally remembered where it was used. It's a gumball machine in the attic:

@TurtleFinland:
Looks like bright-light-blue in the render, which is used fairly rarely, and probably would have required a ton of recolors.
Color is fine BUT you have to have points... so many points...
The more interesting part is the chance to raise a reissue of a Classic Space set including a brick build moon baseplate.

I just don't like being forced by FOMO into making an order for non-exclusive sets (at full price) when I know patience will usually bring a better price elsewhere. Your flying car will be available in a few short days on the Lego website. Patience.
I'm not mister Davis, though. You should consider that there's a good chance that he's not on this site, and depending on when you last saw him, he might not even be alive anymore.
If he is still alive, consider getting him a flying moon car.

This stupid head design again with big open mounths, looks extra dumb without the hair pieces. Here it is also clear how much worse the face prinst has become in recent years with thicker lines. Look at the design a few years ago, with finer lines and more detailed print.
