i find it more colorfull as the original version. i also like the addition of the boat. Still it is not a set I will buy.

I wish there were more book based sets could be more imaginatively and more faithfully created without being so tied to one version.

They did an amazing job of capturing both the Chocolate Room and the characters! I honestly might consider getting this sometime in the future.

Hmm, I echo the sentiment that it is very brown, which makes it a little less magical than I remember. Probably not one I will buy, but I am thankful to see the boat included so folks can relive their childhood trauma :-)

It really doesn't look like 2,000 pieces. But on closer inspection you can see that there are a LOT of very small, fiddly pieces. This set looks like one where you can put dozens of pieces on the set and have accomplished almost nothing.

Hopefully the set isn't quite so stuffed and busy looking in person.

something about this seems off and makes it feel like a MOC more than usual Ideas products. Usually there is a strong focal point to a Lego set that makes it feel iconic and singular, whereas this does not really have one. The chocolate fall is closet thing, but isn’t visually interesting enough

Did the person whose idea this is based on offer it to Slugworthy first?

It looks good, but a little boring. Best thing it has going for it is it isn't overpriced, at the very least.

To me at first glance it looks like a pile of brown bricks with some other colours thrown on top, lacking much shape or focus or definition - but maybe that’s partly the source.

It’s cool that the chocolate fall falls though.

Not that the complaints about color aren't valid, but I will say the great thing about LEGO is that you can change it! I changed all the white walls in the Seinfeld set to light grey, and I'm much happier with it. If you want the chocolate river to be more tiled, or the rocks to be grey instead of dark tan, mod it out!

To be fair, the Shire was just straight up not worth the price it was, I only bought the Shire because I had a bunch of points to get it down to what I thought was a reasonable price

The minifigures are the best part of this set, though Gloop is a bit weak.
The set itself is a bit dark, and ticks some boxes but leaves room for improvement at first glance.

For £200 Lego shouldn’t be trolling customers with stickers. This also looks fairly poorly designed. The front of the boat in particular is ugly.

Even though I didn’t like the Movie, the book was awesome. Anyway, on to the set. The build looks nice, and I don’t mind the color scheme. The chocolate river would’ve been so cool tiled off, so I don’t love the stud effect it’s bringing. Other than that, the build looks really nice. I love those mushroom prints, too, and I hope they appear on PaB. Maybe I’d buy too many… but it looks like a great print. The lampposts and boat also look incredible!

The Minifigures are great as well! I don’t love that Charlie looks like Anakin, and one without a torso print, but I guess there are worse people to look like. All the other ones look nice. I think $200 would’ve been spectacular, but I don’t hate the $220 price tag. I don’t know if I’ll get this set, but I’ll be rejoicing when the new parts and recolors come to PaB!

Finally, I do like the 2025 pieces Easter egg.

I have a MOC of the same topic displayed in 2024. Had moving chocolate fall and boat as well. I like mine better. But I may have to get the minifigs as my Ompa Lumpas do not have faces...(plain orange heads only)

Needs just a little bit of brightening up like many have mentioned.
In the movie it does have a drab background.
Dark red brick walls, grey stonework, the large chocolate waterfall, etc. Dark green grass.
So here they didn’t have to totally be movie accurate.
Break up some of the grass with lighter green patches.
And the bridge’s steps a light color and accent the bridges details with lighter stonework tones.
Or even make the entire bridge a lighter color to break it all up and brighten the scenery.

While talking about this with my wife, I realised that it was somewhat the other way around with me. When I read LOTR at 15 or 16, I visualised it mainly with warriors wearing scale armour, like the soldiers from the Black knights from my childhood.

I like that the set is based on the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory rather than the more recent remake. The original orange and green Oompa Loompas are a classic. Too bad the set didn't have about 30 more of them in it :)

We see Augustus and the pipe he gets sucked up in after falling into the Chocolate River.
But no large bloated swollen blueberry Violet figure?

We see Mike TV shrunken on the Wonkavision and the teleporter (which doesn't look right? Haven't seen the flick in years).
No bottles of Fizzy Lifting Drinks?
And another Umpa Lumpa would be nice.

Maybe also a glass elevator side build would've been good to have too.
(Yes, I know, it'll add to the price, but not by much no?).

Glad they included a minifigure of Grandpa Joe, the true villain of the movie.

As for my thoughts on the set itself, it’s not perfect but I do like it more than the original submission.

I understand where the designers are coming from but the rock colours are just poor choices, and a lot of the candy set just looks alien and not like candy or food at all. Figures look perfect but the diorama is not worth it, especially considering Viking Village was 100 dollars less but roughly the same size. Weird mixed bag for sure.

Incredible! The movie is an absolute classic, and this set does a good job of capturing the iconic scene, every kids dream. Would have loved to see some translucent colored teddy bear molds for the giant gummy bears, that was my favorite part of this scene!

I totally agree, a film is not definitive for a Lego set and many film interpretations are undesirable.
Where Marvel comic-focused designs featured in sets, I felt they were often the only positive aspect.

It seems it miss the finishing expected for such a kind of set.
Maybe an extra buy of many brown tiles could help to reduce this feeling.

You won't be surprised to hear that I find that book almost as disgusting as said movie.
It's not just the whole premise, or the nightmare inducing boat sequence, or the mistreatment of the kids (no matter what their faults might be), just when I think about the scenes of the family in bed I shudder to think about the details said arrangement must entail that are not explicitly mentioned in the movie but are a logical consequence. Let alone the fact how stupid and illogical the circumstances are when you start to think about it.

I believe the estate of Roald Dahl owns the rights to his books. And the works were illustrated several times by different illustrators, which could also be a source of inspiration.

It baffles me how many people here only reference the film. People should read more. And read stories to your children, it’s great for them, for your bond and for yourself. Don’t stop reading to them because they can read themselves. Maybe read WITH them, start acting out scenes or whatever. Be creative there as well, use the parts of the written story to build one of your own, as one might do with a Lego set. Play with literature and with Lego, both are not display pieces. "

I don't like everything about the Austin Powers movies either (especially Goldmember was a low point in many aspects), but don't forget that's a zany comedy, whereas this movie I'm not even sure what genre it's supposed to fit in. EXACTLY. Willy Wonka is associated with chocolate in our social consciousness... but a large number of his confections in the book and movie were not chocolate, but rather candies of various sorts, which are bright and colorful. I think having the rocks as brown - as largest part of the scenery - detracts from the impact of the deep brown chocolate river. Even if this wasn't radically changed, the inclusion of some green and bright candy colors on that section would have made a dramatic change. As is, the eye is immediately drawn to this muted brown in the center of the set, and I think it illicits a sense that its kind of dull.

I don't understand why there's so much visual emphasis on the lamp poles in the foreground. The focus should be on the colorful trees. I'd be fine with them using the usual modular building street light pieces with small base and moving them to the background. The largest lamp post should replaced by a more detailed tree or oversized mushroom. I remember the room feeling more lush.

I skimmed the first time time and didn’t notice the waterfall moves - okay, that’s neat. Still not a set for me, since I didn’t enjoy the film (although I’ll absolutely rank Gene Wilder higher than late career Johnny Depp any day of the week and twice on Sundays), but a moving waterfall is pretty cool and I approve. Definitely the sort of feature to get a few extra oohs and ahhs when you show it off.

(I think Roald Dahl adaptations have the same problem Terry Pratchett adaptations do - so much of the joy of it is in the prose rather than the plots and you lose almost all of that switching mediums.)

It's a no from me. The colours, the waterfall, it looks, well, awful. I get the limitations. but, this just isn't Wonka-ery enough for me with the colour palette. There are some nice touches, but, could do better at over £200

As for A Fish Called Wanda, it contains so much useful wisdom. Best one is still "Don't eat the green ones. They're not ripe yet". Not only works with fish, but just as much with Lego bricks!
