Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 10

Posted by ,

Day one provided a Gryffindor minifigure, day four a Ravenclaw minifigure and day seven a Slytherin minifigure, so a Hufflepuff character should arrive today.

Find out who after the break...

Hannah Abbott joins the group today, dressed in a lovely flame yellowish orange jumper. Like the previous few minifigures, this one includes a seasonal magical creature on her jumper and the mandrake looks adorable! I love its hands gripping the sides of the pot and the holly leaves on top are a nice touch, with some white berries.

I am not convinced this pale blonde hair element suits Hannah Abbott, whose hair is darker in the films, but this is consistent with her previous two minifigures, at least. The short legs make sense too because Hannah is the same age as Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy.

The double-sided head has only appeared a couple of times before, so that is a bonus. A dark brown wand is provided, which is interesting, since it differs from Hannah's minifigure in 40419 Hogwarts Students Accessory Set.

Overall - This is another excellent minifigure and the jumper is utterly charming.

"There's a name you might know me by. Hannah Abbott."

"...who?"

"Hannah Abbott, man. Legendary outlaw."

Oh look, it's the future landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Rebrickable has her name mixed up with a character from a different House, but I didn’t see a way to submit corrections.

According to Norse mythology, the humble mistletoe was the one plant that could, and eventually would, wound and kill Baldr the Brave. The Mandrake's piercing scream heralds and/or causes a quick death. You do not want to know about the other myths surrounding Mandrake/Mandragora, so you should not Google its German name, which is Alraune.

Seems like a weird mash-up of mythologies, but hey. It's Rowling. It's not the worst she's done.

I'm just glad JKR didn't Google Alraune either.

It's not a grumpy face. That mandrake is concentrating really hard as it sends out waves of psionic energy.

Oh, so anyways, this day marks the point where all four sweaters (assuming you managed to avoid looking at the box this whole time) have finally been revealed. Ravenclaw (associated with air) got a Cornish Pixie (which flies). Slytherin (associated with water) got a Grindylow (which lives in the Black Lake). Hufflepuff (associated with Earth) got a Mandrake (which is a rooted plant). And Gryffindor (associated with fire) got...an owl. Not only is the owl not associated with fire in any way, but it's also the only mundane creature in the mix. But again, you can't give Harry someone else's bird, so (white) owl it is.

I logged the change on there and it's been fixed now.

The poinsettia mandrake is a nice touch.

I don’t think it’s a poinsettia. They have tiny yellow flowers in the center of a cluster of leaves to at have turned from green to red, but no berries that I’m aware of. Mistletoe doesn’t seem likely either, given the shape of the leaves. I’m thinking it’s supposed to be holly. Any of the three would be appropriate, of course.

Ah yes. The four you first think of when you think of a student from each of the four houses:
Harry Potter. Draco Malfoy. Cho Chang.
...Hannah Abbott... who?
