Star Wars Advent Calendar Review: Day 22

Posted by ,

The last few days of every Star Wars Advent Calendar produce a number of festive Star Wars models and minifigures. Today's R2-D2 is the first of these for 2015 and it looks great, although its similarity to the standard figure slightly reduces its appeal in my opinion.

2011 saw the release of a Santa Yoda minifigure based on the Lucasfilm Christmas card from 1981. This version of R2-D2 with antlers also originates from a Lucasfilm Christmas card which was sent out in 1979. The ninja horn element approximates the antlers seen on the card quite nicely in my opinion and has never appeared in reddish brown before which furthers its appeal. A spare is included too!

Overall - 4.0 - This is a nice representation of R2-D2 from the famous Christmas card but something more to differentiate this minifigure from the typical fare would have been welcome.

I didn't have this version of R2, and he's great. I also didn't have that antler piece. That's great too. So, in theory, this should be great.

Unfortunately, both of the prints on mine were wonky. The one one the dome was slightly wonky, but I can live with that, because I know it happens a lot on these new astromechs. Unfortunately, the body was printed way off to one side, which certainly isn't a common problem! So, mine wasn't too great...

I put the spare antlers on my AT-AT from the other day, which makes it look a lot more festive!

Yup, added the antlers to my AT-AT too.

This gets a 5 rating from me. I didn't have these antler pieces, so I'm super happy. I don't have an updated Artoo (just the original one), so I'm extremely happy about today's gift. PS antlers on the AT-AT--awesome!

I also had a wonky body print... Didn't notice the head but clearly this isn't a one off and is obvious at a glance so i'm suprised it got past quality control!

Yep, AT-AT with antlers has appeared on a Christmas card before, happy to have two antler sets from this. Will decorate my log cabin post Christmas. Like above, I'd much rather have a usable figure like this which can be added to my Star Wars collection, rather than a mash up of SW and Christmas which is usable for neither.

I think the droid is splendid. Artoo on the LFL Christmas card is a standard Artoo with antlers, no reason to make the calendar minifig any different, but I do like the Christmas flavoured minifigs,no looking forward to the 24th

Next year I'd like to see Queen Amidala in a Christmas tree shaped dress

Putting the extra set of antlers on the AT-AT made my day!

I know he only has antlers in the original pic, but they could have at least printed a red nose and some fairy lights on R2 to make him a bit more special...

@mr_skinny, Amidala as a Christmas tree would be awesome :-) I'm a bit surprised they haven't done Chewie in his Life Day robes yet!
