Trailer Brickdown: Rogue One

Posted by ,

The first teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has now been revealed and it exhibits plenty of impressive new characters, locations and vehicles.

Last month we published a list of prices and piece counts for the eight Rogue One sets which have been announced so far and with this teaser we can now hypothesize about the scenes and vehicles which might be represented in those sets.

You can find the trailer and some analysis of how what we have seen so far might relate to the LEGO range after the break...

I will begin with a few comments on the teaser, which is excellent in my opinion. The marketing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was absolutely superb and I think this matches that, adequately laying out the premise of the movie and offering a nice combination of character moments as well as action sequences. I am delighted to see Mon Mothma once again and the glimpse of a pair of robed Royal Guards flanking a hooded figure certainly piqued my interest. The appearances of X-wings, the Death Star and Gonk droids are always welcome too. However, the sight of an AT-AT turning its head to blast some helpless rebels on the ground is a fantastically intimidating image and that is definitely my favourite moment.

When discussing the sets which are likely to stem from the film we must acknowledge that we have only seen a tiny snippet of footage and that there are almost certainly a number of characters, vehicles and settings which have yet to be shown. On the other hand, almost all of the seven sets which made up the first wave based on The Force Awakens represented craft and characters which were visible in the trailers, so it is impossible to tell for certain whether any or all of the sets have been seen in this first teaser.

Buildable Figures

The Rogue One range will supposedly feature three Buildable Figures as part of the wave released in September and it seems likely that these will represent some of the major characters as well as those who are the most visually interesting. Given that the story follows Felicity Jones' character of Jyn Erso it seems likely that she will be among them in a similar vein to 75113 Rey.

It is a bit more difficult to establish who else might be seen as a Buildable Figure given how little has been revealed so far, although the eminently impressive armour of the trooper below seems very well suited to a Buildable Figure. I would propose that the highest piece count of the three sets would be assigned to this character as the armour is fairly intricate, with plenty of detailing which might necessitate a higher piece count.

Stormtroopers are also notably present in the trailer but I do not think we will see another Stormtrooper so soon after the First Order version was released. I will therefore theorise that the third figure will represent the major villain of the movie, akin to 75117 Kylo Ren, but that we have yet to see the character properly. It could be the Grand Admiral or ISB agent seen in the image below, although I suspect he engages in very few action scenes which might lessen his suitability for a Buildable Figure. The droid seen running behind Jyn is also a possible candidate and would be the first such character to appear as a Buildable Figure.

Based on those thoughts, the sets might be as follows:

  • 75119 Jyn Erso - 104 pieces - €24.99, £19.99, $24.99
  • 75120 Shadow Trooper - 169 pieces - €24.99, £19.99, $24.99
  • 75121 {Unknown villain or droid character} - 106 pieces - €24.99, £19.99, $24.99

System sets

Assessing which scenes and vehicles are likely to be represented by the five System sets reported to make up the first wave in September is tricky. The T-65 X-wing, which appeared a couple of times in the trailer, seems likely and I have it on good authority that AT-STs will feature heavily in the film. This seems likely given the presence of AT-ATs and the confined streets which are seen in the trailer. AT-DPs are seen roaming the streets of cities in Star Wars Rebels and I imagine the AT-ST might fill a similar role in Rogue One. The rumours of Boba Fett and the appearance of the Slave I at the Nuremberg Toy Fair only complicate the issue further and it waits to be seen whether either will feature in the film. For the time being I am going to ignore them but that will change if Boba appears in a subsequent trailer as a new Slave I is probably due!

TIE Fighters are not seen in the trailer but we did hear their iconic screech in the short preview released prior to the full teaser and the starfighters appear on the packaging, so it is possible that a TIE Fighter will appear in the LEGO range to oppose the rebels. Otherwise, the only familiar vehicles which are confirmed to appear in the movie are AT-ATs, Star Destroyers and the Death Star. None of these fit the price points published last month and I therefore suspect that they will be kept for later waves, if versions of these iconic Imperial weapons are released at all. We are aware of 75159 The Death Star but we do not yet know when the set will become available.

Two new vehicles appeared in the trailer and I think both would lend themselves to LEGO sets of different sizes. The landspeeder below looks to be about the right size for a set costing around £39.99 or $39.99. It reminds me of the First Order Snowspeeder in some respects but also recalls the Gian Speeder seen in The Phantom Menace through the twin blaster cannons mounted on either side.

The second new craft is far larger and is certainly my favourite of the new vehicles. It looks to be appropriate for a set costing around £119.99 or $129.99, although it is difficult to get a sense of scale. If we are to assume that the palm trees seen here and those seen in the shot focused upon the AT-ATs are the same height, this vessel looks to be only slightly larger than the Imperial walkers, in which case it might be scaled down accordingly so it looks good beside 75054 AT-AT and could be assigned a lower price as a result.

The most prevalent location in this teaser trailer is a Rebel base which seems to be the one located on Yavin IV which we visited in A New Hope. The importance of this location may be exaggerated by the trailer and we cannot always rely on LEGO sets to represent vehicles and locations with are prevalent in the film. However, sketch models for the base on Yavin IV have been designed in the past and this seems like a perfect opportunity to represent the famed setting and include some desirable minifigures based on characters from Rogue One. Perhaps this might be suitable for a larger set in a subsequent wave, depending on its role in the film.

Based on those thoughts, the sets might be as follows:

  • 75152 {Unnamed Imperial Landspeeder} - 385 pieces - €39.99, £34.99, $29.99
  • 75153 AT-ST - 449 pieces - €49.99, £39.99, $39.99
  • 75154 TIE Fighter - 543 pieces - €69.99, £59.99, $69.99
  • 75155 Rebel Starfighter - 659 pieces - €79.99, £64.99, $69.99
  • 75156 {Unnamed Dropship} - 863 pieces - €99.99, £79.99, $89.99

Having said all that, the thing I want most from the Rogue One sets is an Imperial Battle Pack containing four Stormtroopers or three Stormtroopers and another trooper variant. Hopefully no officers will be included, assuming such a set is released in the winter wave.

Obviously these sets are purely conjectural and my guesses are based on nothing more than what we can see in the trailer, the piece counts of each set and the sets which LEGO have released previously. They may all prove to be correct, all incorrect or, most likely, a mixture of the two as was the case with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Do you agree or disagree with my assessment and what did you think of the teaser? Let us know in the comments.

I really hope that isn't the Lars homestead in the background of the shot with the black-armored trooper.

By in United States,

Is Ultimate Collector's Series 75159-1: The Death Star listed in the database something that is still happening? With the plot of Rouge One revolving around obtaining the Death Star plans could it be marketed in conjunction with other Rouge One sets?

By in United States,

I predict we will get even more TIE Fights and X-Wings in our future. One of my main complaints with The Force Awakens is that it's a New Hope 2, but more so that after 40 years they are still using X-Wings and TIEs. It was lazy on their part, there should have been newer ships and then we could have gotten new sets instead of the same old stuff a 1000 times over.

By in United Kingdom,

I'd love to see that AT-AT made into a set because it looks slightly different to the one we see in empire strikes back.
An AT-ST set would be great as we haven't had one for a while.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I think that the x-wing is the 80 euro set, and that the 100 euro set will be a slave I

Gravatar
By in United States,

The trailer was great and I can't wait for the movie and accompanying sets!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would also love to see another AT-ST; the last minifig-scale one we had was back in '07. It's about time they made a new one, especially to accompany a new movie!

The one thing I am most looking forward to is the fact that the Death Star will likely not be exploded in this movie. A terrorizing superweapon will not be destroyed....for a fourth time....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe an ATST, the rebel ship with rotating wings, that big villain ship similar to Kylo's, and more

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wonder if the planet on which the AT-AT's are pummeling the rebels is the same as one found in the SW Battlefront II mod "Dark Times: Rising Son"; I just can't remember what it was called...

btw how about those Stormtrooper rifles! They look awesome. :D
They look more similar to Clone Trooper rifles than to the blasters in Ep. IV.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

One of the bigger sets could always end up being a new Tantine IV, especially seeing as the plans end up inside R2-D2's head onboard it.

...maybe a second wave.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The black stormtrooper is actually called a death trooper, they r an elite type of stormtroopers which work closely with vader

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Ryan: Death Troopers was the name of a Legends novel featuring zombie stormtroopers, and the canon version of the death trooper is also undead, from the game Star Wars: Commander. It's most likely a Purge or Shadow Trooper. Cool fanfic, though.

Love the trailer, looking forwards to the sets!

By in Italy,

I think your hypotheses are all correct, except the ones regarding the X-wing:
75155 will be probably an X-wing, as it's usually the set with the price slightly higher than TIE fighter (and 65£ is a normal price for an X-wing)
75156 could be a "Slave I", as someone else said, and this because of the image that appeared one or two weeks ago about new 2016 Lego sets, and also because I don't think they'll create a scenario in the first wave.
It would be nice if they will feature the giant dropship seen on the island-like environment, but it will probably have an higher price than 80£.

The one thing I feel important to point out about potential system sets is that if the set is not a vehicle, but a location/ playset, it usually has to feature in a prominent action scene in the move, and has to be at the level of the character. This is why we got the Takodana set in TFA, but not a set on the surface of the Starkiller. Takodana had a great character-level battle which lends itself to falling trees, exploding walls, etc. You see this also in 75093-1: Death Star Final Duel... The character-level sequences on Starkiller never had that high level of action which is easily captured in a play set. The best action scenes on Starkiller were the X-wings attacking the structures. For this reason, I can't imagine that there will be R.O. set of the Rebel Base on Yavin IV. We know the Empire doesn't know the location of this base at this point in the timeline, so there is not likely to be highly kinetic actions scenes on Yavin IV... doesn't lend itself to play features. I think TLG is wary of another fiasco like 75017-1: Duel on Geonosis... which no one bought. I picked up mine at Kmart for $9!

By in United States,

This trailer is dope I am o exited for the movie! as for sets i will probably buy any sets they make for this! ;)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm assuming the villain buildafig is going to be that Imperial Commander in white, but I suppose they might go for another version of Stormtroopers, given we've only had the First Order variation so far

Gravatar
By in United States,

The AT-ST is a must for me (that will be the third scout walker in operation with my Imperial forces, it would have been four but I dismanteled it sometime ago and used its pieces on other things). Both the Tie and the X-Wing look way out of my budget by September if that Dropship that is seen exploding comes with a lot of Imperial Forces and is priced correctly I will certainly end up buying it, Same as the eventual Battle Packs.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Excellent analysis. I absolutely loved the trailer from start to finish and love that they have brought back Genevieve O’Reilly, the actress who played Mon Mothma in the scenes cut from Episode III!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wouldn't the Imperial Commander likely be Grand Moff Tarkin? He's the one that designed the Death Star, and I believe is one of the characters in the movie.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So will there be a death star set from rogue one? If not I think we will see another AT-AT set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope that dropship is a set. Actually, I just want good pictures of it because I want to build my own. I've wanted to build an Imperial deployment craft capable of fielding 4 AT-STs, a bunch of speederbikes, and a whole mess of troopers for quite some time. I made an early version without AT-STs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If they make a new AT-AT I won't be buying one since I already have two of the last version. Same thing with the X-wing's/tie fighters if they decide to make more I won' t be buying them. Getting really tired of all the remakes. The only thing that is bad with the Rogue One wave is there will likely be new exclusive minifigures to each set which will make it difficult to not buy some of the sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I rather hope they release the AT-AT again at some point just to give the 2 poor troopers in the assault on Hoth chance.
I can also see the new Death Star set having some sort of reference to Rogue 1 in it as well as updated OT stuff as it looks like it is going to be featuring fairly heavily as a plot point in this and at least this time round you know the end of this film is not going to be based around blowing up the big ball.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hopefully they don't make X-Wings and TIE fighters the centerpiece of this wave. They basically just did them last year with TFA. I'd love to see some sort of midsized transport, and I wonder whether that one with the four wings is Rebel or Imperial?

And a Yavin IV base would be very cool. About time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That trailer was AWESOME! Looks like a really intriguing movie. Wish I knew these characters' names... oh wait, this is just the Force Awakens marketing all over again. :P

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Some cheaper sets please. A couple of Microfighters, some battle packs and the chance to get some of the lead character minifigs without spending £50.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ModularRoger, yeah I would totally buy a Yavin 4 set. that would be epic!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The landing craft looks incrementally larger than Kylo's shuttle in cross-section, but twice as long and of course big in the belly for cargo. I'm curious what they've done for the nose. I'll soon lose track of the design etymology at the rate they keep jumping around in both real and in-universe time from TIE-derived OT Lambda to prequel Theta to Lambda concept-derived sequel Upsilon to now this pre-OT thing!

Gravatar
By in United States,

joemmo, this is just the sets that are coming out in December. There will be MAINY more sets that come out in January after the movie is released so the sets don't spoil the movie. Just like they di last year with New New Hope.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Surely there will be a set with a few rebel troopers and Mon Mothma, similar to the concept of First Order Transporter (albeit the opposing side). I doubt we'll see another Slave I, especially since the UCS version is still available. Same goes for the TIE fighters and X-Wings. In fact, I'd be surprised to see any remakes in the first wave.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I can't wait for this movie and these sets. Hopefully one is the rebel lander (not shown in this trailer), and while I don't expect battle packs as such, hopefully some of these sets have a good selection of army building troops.

Gravatar
By in South Korea,

A Yavin rebel base set would be nice - one with a new Mon Mothma minifig without an Anakin hairdo this time.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Isn't it a bit unlikely that the 75155 set will be yet ANOTHER X-WING ? I mean, we already have the 75149 Resistance X-wing Fighter coming out this Summer. And if Poe's X-Wing hasn't retired yet by then, it would mean the 75155 would be the third Lego X-Wing set on the market at the same time. Not likely!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't know but you have missed the most important Star Wars Set in the entire history of ever: The Death Start Train MONORAIL!!! Finally it is time for every AFOL to go crazy. See yourself at around 1:12 of the trailer. It is clearly filmed on some underground location. Anyone here lives in the city where this could have been filmed? You can also see some kind of Stormtrooper Droid on the left side of the frame, which I expect to make an appearance as a Buildable Figure. However a train in Star Wars would be really exciting and would be THE opportunity for LEGO to revive the Monorail System. Just my wishful thinking...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@doe apparently it's Canary Wharf tube station in London :)

@greenbrickgiant yes I'm sure there will be more sets to come. Maybe the rebels will get some more decent vehicles in this than the Resistance got in TFA

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^It was mentioned this morning on BBC Radio 1 that it was filmed at Canary Warf underground station in London..

By in United Kingdom,

@joemmo and Fireheart: thanks for the info!

I can see fanfilms being made there in the future. Maybe a Stormtrooper meeting on the Star Wars Celebration 2016 days on the way to the ExCel :o)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Guessing that the Imp guy in the white is a Grand Admiral? Looks excellent and yes, that does look like a moisture vaporator in the background of the Death Troopers photo, doesn't it?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll probably just get the AT-ST and that cool tank thing. My imperial troops need some more backup against my AT-AP.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Trailer looks brilliant - but I am disappointed that there doesn't appear to be much in the way of affordable sets in the first wave. where's the £19.99 set?

There will be a new trailer at SW Celebration in London in July. It will probably (like TFA before it) that trailer where the first wave of sets comes from.

TFA wave 1 didn't reveal anything we hadn't seen in that first trailer, so I think Rogue 1 will go down that route on top of what has been put forward above.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm calling it. One of the figures will be that black guy in armor. It makes sense that the Stormtroopers have DC-15 blaster rifles or something similar because this is supposed to be at the beginning of the Empire, so there are probably still DC-15 blasters circulating around from the Clone Wars.

Forty years is not unrealistic to be using the same ships. The X-Wing did go from T-65 to T-70 (though the design looks a bit more like a Z-95 Headhunter, so it almost seems a backwards step).

Here on Earth, the B-52 Stratofortress could be in service for 90 years! Time will tell.

By the way, guys, will we see a new DS this year?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hoping for the battle pack: 3 stormtroopers and one of those AWESOME looking black armored Stormtroopers. I have no idea what the model would be though......

On a different note: Are the stormtroopers in the tank thing wearing different helmets than their brethren on the ground?? I can't tell from the angle, but the guy standing and waving a hand looks like he is wearing a Flametrooper helmet.

Gravatar
By in United States,

On this watch of the trailer, I noticed that there are these camo Stormtroopers running about. I hope that they are also in the R1 Battle Pack.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That would be cool to get a variety of different stormtroopers. so not only the classic and the death troopers but mabye some like Swamp troopers or something.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The trailer makes it look marginally better than The Force Awakens, but I'm not holding out any hope; think my decision to stick to OT and PT sets was a wise one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Apparently, the camo Stormtroopers are Sandtroopers. This is what I hope happens.

Stormtrooper Battle pack.

Either 4 stormtroopers, or 3 stormtroopers and a sergeant of some kind.

Special Forces Battle Pack

2x Sandtroopers and 2x Shadow Troopers

Great actress for Mon Mothma. Looks just like the person in Episode VI. Unless it is the same person and this was shot 30 years ago.

Does it seem odd that the prices for 75155 and 75154 are the same in the US but different everywhere else???

I would love OT TIE Fighters and X-Wings. I would also enjoy an imperial battle pack with 2 stormtroopers, 1 officer and 1 of the gun-metal grey 'Deathtroopers.'
