70590 Airjitzu Battle Grounds has just been revealed by just2good on his YouTube channel, completing the gallery of images for the summer. I suspect this image will disappoint some as the set was initially reported to be named Airjitzu Temple Grounds, leading many to believe that it might be a means of expanding 70751 Temple of Airjitzu.

In fact, the set is intended as an area in which you can play with the Airjitzu fliers; two of which are included. It reminds me of some of the early Ninjago sets such as 2520 Ninjago Battle Arena and is priced at $59.99, so will probably cost around £49.99 in the UK.

Are you satisfied with the set or were you hoping for something which might have more closely matched 70751 Temple of Airjitzu? Let us know in the comments below.

By in United States,

That is a disappointment. We just teased ourselves into thinking we were going to expand the excellent 70751 Temple of Airjitzu. On the plus side, one less set to buy of the summer wave.

Yep, disappointing that it doesn't compliment 70751. Pass for me.

By in Netherlands,

I don't think that it is dissapointing at al. I expected something of this kind and I think that this is one of the best ninjago summer sets of this year.

By in Netherlands,

and also the style of the buildings is a kind of the same as the style of the temple of airjitzu buildings. so I think it match perfectly.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but is that a new piece in the roof of the right-hand building? Specifically, the piece the diagonal ridges on either corner clip onto. It looks like a 1x1 plate with a bar on one side and a rounded edge on the opposite, similar to the 1x1 "tooth" tiles in some of the newer Mixels. I don't see any way to build it with existing parts.

That is way to expensive!!! I like the bad ninjas with the old
style of mask but this is ridiculous!

By in United States,

Bit of a disappointment from an AFOL perspective but this looks like a pretty fun playset for my son.

So Airjitzuey! Much battley! Very grounded!

In all seriousness, I love it.

By in United States,

I think this is awesome. Looks like we get Nai and Lloyd in their Airjitzu forms. That is great! I'm wondering who the weird ghost/stone guys are. Friends of Sensei Yang for sure.

For fans of Ninjago this is definitely a great set.

Unwanted.
I would love "Airjitzu Temple Grounds".

Nothing disappointing about this set for me! In fact, it's more exciting than I could have imagined! Getting both Airjitzu Lloyd and Airjitzu Nya (the two ninja who didn't get Airjitzu minifigures or fliers last year) in one set is amazing on its own, but this set also has some beautiful scenery and fantastic functions, including the first really effective LEGO rendition I've seen of the classic stairs-that-turn-into-a-slide trap, plus a new way of launching Airjitzu fliers for ground-based battles! They even managed to integrate two of the Airjitzu air launchers quite tastefully as columns to either side of the gate.

Throw in two of Sensei Yang's pupils and a pretty great piece count for its price and it's looking pretty amazing all around. The only other thing I could really ask for are a few more weapons, since the creative weapons were another part of the Airjitzu sets' appeal besides the figures and fliers. The ones included are cool, and surprisingly realistic-looking what with their subdued colors and reasonable size, but I almost prefer when Ninjago weapons are a bit glitzy and over the top.

As for combining it with the Temple of Airjitzu, all it takes is a little creativity. It's LEGO, after all, and this gives you a great-looking gate and the start of two more great-looking Asian buildings. It even matches the Temple of Airjitzu's color palette. The Airjitzu launchers and fliers/spinners are easily removed, but even if you don't display them I still think they add to the set's value rather than taking away from it. Even for the first arena-style set since 2012, I think this set easily surpasses all of those which came before it. Great work by whoever designed it!

@donutsftw:You know, you might be right! I can't quite tell, but it certainly couldn't be any existing part I can think of.

@godislove: $60 for 666 pieces is too expensive? Seems pretty reasonable to me, especially since it includes two bulky Airjitzu fliers that I would expect to add a fair amount to the price.

By in United States,

It has potential. @ donutsftw there are several new pieces here. In its favor: cool stone/ghost ninjas in light gray and new building techniques that emulate Japanese architecture. I can do w/o the flyers but the rest would easily integrate with something like Dojo Showdown. Fine, just take my money.

I think that the black clip piece is just our usual 1x2 with bar, but that the brown plates in the roof next to it on either side are wedge plates, which open up a space for it to fit at an angle.

Disappointed, but not surprised. One less set to buy.

Intriguing, looks like the stairs leading into the temple fold flat.

By in Canada,

Finally, an upcoming Ninjago set that I actually like!

Pure. Gold.

disappointing!
that is all.

By in United States,

I'm quite happy with this design. The new launcher design for ground battles (which uses Technic gear racks that I believe were only used before in the Mercedes-Benz Arocs) look quite ingenious, and the two buildings, while small, look like they'd fit in well with the larger buildings from the Temple of Airjitzu. Speaking of those buildings, I'm kind of amazed that even after all these years Ninjago sets are continuing to come up with new ways to make paper lanterns! The large gate is also decent, especially with the stair function.

The figures all look amazing as well, though I suppose this confirms that we don't seem to be getting a "throwback" suit for Skylor this year.

By in United States,

@Aanchir: Thanks for that link! You can definitely see the part I'm talking about better there. Hopefully we'll get a similar piece with a clip instead of a bar soon too, having both would open up a lot of interesting possibilities.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Darn. I was really hoping this wave would provide me with an opportunity to get a samukai figure instead of resorting to the high aftermarket prices. This was my last hope. Darn darn darny darn.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well that's disappointing. :/ Architecture is cool but I don't really like the whole Airjitzu Arena thing.

Gravatar
By in Pakistan,

What a joke. Lol

By in Canada,

@Maxximus: Yep! You can see that function more clearly in this image: http://cache.lego.com/r/dynamic/is/image/LEGO/70590_alt4?op_sharpen=0&resmode=sharp4&wid=4000&fit=constrain,1&fmt=png-alpha Also notable in that image is that Yang's students Chris and Martin each have two face prints, one in Sand Green as "ghosts" and one in Medium Stone Grey as ordinary statues!

@Emmafofemma: Since the Skybound wave continued into the second half of this year, it's also possible that whatever this new story arc is called (I keep hearing "rise of the villains" but I don't know if there's an official source for that) will continue into the first half of next year! So don't rule out the possibility of other past villains making an appearance.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not too bad for the Airjutsu Flyers.
The Grey Ninjas and "ghost" will make good statues.
Ninja Nya, brilliant.

It would have been good to see an Airjutsu Temple Grounds, but TLG would probably mess it up with stupid play features.
It is better to build our own Temple Grounds anyway.
I'm sure the Gateway and building on the left will feature in my version of the Temple Grounds.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I also enjoy this set and I really hope I will somehow get it!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

That's a shame. Looks like the Temple of Airjitzu will be more only foray into Ninjago. Like many others I was hoping this would complement that set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

No disappointment here. I plan to pick this one up. Nice selection of minifigures and more printed tiles is all great things.
As much as I would've have liked an addition to that beautiful piece of architecture called Temple of Airjitzu, I suspected that it would turn out to be something more like 2504 Spinjitzu Dojo or 2520 Ninjago Battle Arena. Huzzah!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is the lack of compatibility with Temple of Airjitzu the only complaint people have? Because @Aanchir beat that logic pretty soundly...

I see nothing wrong with this set, so I'm just curious why people are saying they're "disappointed" if not for the above reason?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Teriyaqi: I mean, just because we're not disappointed doesn't mean others shouldn't be, if it's really not what they were expecting or hoping for. The set has a lot going for it, but there are a lot of great sets out there and most people can't afford all of them, so it's anyone's right to be choosy and only get excited for the sets that hit all the right buttons for them personally.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ Agreed. For me, it is a definite disappointment because what I wanted was more of an expansion of the temple grounds. I would have loved something far more akin to a Japanese garden, which would have better fit the aethetic I am going for. I love the bridge and fountain on the original, and would have loved an expansion that could have continued that theme on the right and left side of the temple, which really would have expanded the 'temple grounds'.

This may be a great play set, and may be a great battle set, or may work for others to add in for their temple, but it will not for the direction I have taken my set and overall set-up.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Okay set I guess, not really into ninjago. However the use of an iceskate as battle axe is very, very cool.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Aanchir: Now that I re-read my comment, it's definitely more confrontational than I meant it to be. I was legitimately just curious for other reasons why people are disappointed.

Also the edit button disappeared on it.

No Samukai????
Nooooooooo!!!!!!!!!
Great set though, nice incorporation of the Airjitzu flyers.

By in United States,

"I suspect this image will disappoint some as the set was initially reported to be named Airjitzu Temple Grounds, leading many to believe that it might be a means of expanding 70751 Temple of Airjitzu." Could not have said it better myself... as I uncheck the "want it" box on the Brickset wish list.

By in United States,

Although I would have loved a Lego Japanese garden, I find myself very pleased with this set. It has good minifigures, interesting parts, and some nice architecture, at a very reasonable price-to-part ratio. Not having bought any Airjitzu flyers so far, I'm even happy to see them incorporated so stylishly!

By in Canada,

Another thing I'm just now observing: even though this set is a bit heavy on play features, and the figures are all pretty fantastical, it notably doesn't appear to feature any kind of high-tech or modern-day stuff (Nindroids, computers, vehicles, trading cards tiles, etc). I wonder if that was a conscious decision to try and make it more appealing to AFOLs with more historical fantasy leanings? I mean, even 70751 Temple of Airjitzu had one Nindroid character (Zane), civilians in modern clothes, two trading card tiles, and a computer chip hidden in a book. But in this set even most of the weapons feel somewhat authentically medieval compared to in other Ninjago sets.
