Star Wars Advent Calendar Review: Day 2

The annual Star Wars Advent Calendar provides a perfect opportunity for LEGO to include a selection of unusual and rare minifigures so I always look forward to finding out what each set contains.

Day two reveals our first minifigure in the 2016 calendar and I am pleased to say that it continues to impress...

This Bespin Wing Guard has only previously appeared in 75060 Slave I and he looks splendid in a smart blue uniform which is trimmed with gold details on the front and back of the torso. The head is not the same as the character included in 75060 Slave I but the hat, torso and legs are identical.

He is armed with a light bluish grey pistol which makes a welcome change from previous years where minifigures have not come packaged with accessories. Perhaps this suggests that the weapons racks which have detracted from past Star Wars Advent Calendars have been left out of this one.

Personally, I would like to have seen a named character such as Sergeant Edian appear but this generic guard is perfectly satisfactory and I am sure it will prove popular with owners of 75060 Slave I as well as those to whom this minifigure is entirely new.

Overall - 5.0 - The inclusion of such a rare minifigure is very appealing and I am delighted to be able to expand my Wing Guard. Once again, I have to give full marks!

Nice figure!

I would have liked to have seen a better weapon than that, but the minifig does pair very nicely with 75060. Maybe someday we'll get some more Cloud City sets re-released...

Another solid 5. I paid about $15 for one of these guys a year ago just so I could have a black bespin guard to go with the white-skinned guard from The USC Slave 1 like the old Palitoy/Kenner figures from 1980.

I'm don't mind, but I'm thinking that if there is room for improvement, eg. a named character, then the top score isn't appropriate? Maybe 4.5/5 instead?

I love this minifig--the color and hat. My first Bespin Guard. Yippee! Now we just gotta have a new Cloud City set with possibly more of these guards. And in regards to the calendar, hopefully there will be no weapons rack.

@omnium - I would rather have seen a named character included but cannot criticise the gift in its current state so I think 5.0 is an appropriate score.

I think they sought to improve as much as possible for this year's Advent calendar. Should be blown away going forward.

Fantastic calendar so far -- Lego is two-for-two here as far as I'm concerned.

My son and I are staging lego warfare between the Star Wars and the Christmas Countdown calendars. So far Slave I and the Bespin Guard are locked in battle with the sailboat and the reindeer...

I personally would have given this minifig a 2 out of 5. While I am pleasantly surprised to see accessories included with the figure, IMHO, the pants are plain with no printing, the torso is also very simple, no arm print(s), and not much to the hat either. Despite the rarity of the character, I would have much rather had a character that was not so anonymous. Like boba fett, or perhaps a chrome gold R2-D2 instead of "warm gold".

As a family who have had all the SW advents since the first one, my wife was, only this evening, saying how these first two gifts have been exceptional, and that it's gotta go down hill soon. What a pessimist!

@CapnRex101
Sound fair enough! I've just been reading about the lack of scores on the Friends calendar thread and it made me want to get my coat ;-)
As we can see from @ggfile's thoughts, the idea of scores are very personal and my comment was in no way a criticism of your excellent review.

My comment above is also not meant as criticism. I just happen to have a different opinion.

Indeed, that's how I took it: as your own opinion. It just happens to be different from the review.

@ggfile

Chrome gold R2-D2? You mean C-3PO?

Seeing one of those 'mock-gun' pieces being used as a slim blaster is a decent enough stand-in, but when are we going to see an official mould for the stinger pistol they use on Bespin? It could also be something they use to represent other slim stylised blasters like Padme's too. Otherwise though I'd say this is a very good figure. If the legs had printing it would only be creases in the trousers so it probably wouldn't add much.

Glad to get one to go with my guard from Slave 1! This calender is definitely starting off right...

^^^ umm yeah... that's what I meant. Lol. TY :)

I personally like this one. It is a pretty simple minifig, which I like considered Star Wars mini-figures have gotten extreme details in the past few years. I too give a two thumbs up! :)

I for one think it's refreshing to see a "generic" Star Wars minifigure in the ranks. IMO, Star Wars licensed product has too many stars and not enough supporting actors; army-buidling (except for Stormtroopers) is very difficult unless you're customizing your figures.
