Star Wars Advent Calendar Review: Day 5

We are only on the fifth day of this year's Star Wars Advent Calendar but we have already been whisked across the galaxy from the gaseous planet of Bespin to an Imperial shipyard. Now we are visiting yet another location as we explore the surface of Hoth.

The DF.9 anti-infantry battery has never appeared at such a small scale in a LEGO set before but I think this model looks splendid. Its cylindrical design is faithful to the source material and you can rotate the turret all the way around to fend off Imperial attacks, perhaps perpetrated by the TIE Interceptor revealed on day three, from any direction.

I like the white slopes used to represent Rebel fortifications around the turret and the curved shape of the tower has been rendered very nicely. However, the 2x2 tile with hole on which the laser cannon is mounted would probably look slightly better in light bluish grey and the static nature of this model detracts from its playability to some degree. Nevertheless, the 2016 Star Wars Advent Calendar continues to impress!

Overall - 4.0 - This is a great little model but offers a little less play value than previous gifts so is not scored quite as highly.

Well made model but it seems to be missing the tan color.

This makes a decent companion to last year's Ion Cannon and the micro AT-AT.

I had a battle droid in my door five instead? Roger-Roger!

Slight disappointmentioned after the amazing first four days, but it is a pretty awesome rendition of a rebel turret for the scale and with such few parts. I think I'm always instinctively looking for value for money in terms of piece count/volume, but the more I look at this, the better it seems. A bunch of these in a micro scale hoth battle would look great.

One other small point is that only getting a single left or right side wedge plate always sets my OCD a-tingling.

I have to say that I've enjoyed every item thus far in this year's calendar and it's rapidly outdoing the previous years. To add to my appreciation, my son has the Hotwheels calendar too this year and that's been pretty poor with two cars, a plastic reindeer and two sets of generic stickers. After that I doubt I'll ever complain about a Lego calendar ever again!

I really enjoyed this set and would give it a 5. I much prefer it over the tie interceptor from yesterday. I think it looks much more true to the source material. The interceptor proportions looked a bit out.

It's a good little model and recognizable. I don't like it's stability on the two plates. I moved the bigger slope piece to the side of the turret where the two plates meet instead.

I thought the white slope pieces were snow piles. Gr8 model btw!

OH MY GOSH! A NEW DALEK! Just kidding. :)

Snow piles, fortifications... on Hoth that's basically the same, isn't it?

Anyway, a cute little build and quite recognisable.

I do really like this one. The design is pretty accurate and it's a true micro-build. 5 star for me! :)
