2017 Elves box images
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has published the German version of the square consumer catalogue online and within it are images of the boxes of the Elves sets due for release in March.
I've not really paid them much attention until now but it's clear from these pictures that the woodland folk have a new adversary in the form of goblins that rob, kidnap and generally cause havoc in Elvendale.
You can view them after the break.
41185 Magic Rescue from the Goblin Village
41184 Aira's Airship & the Amulet Chase
41183 The Goblin King's Evil Dragon
41182 The Capture of Sophie Jones
41181 Naida's Gondola & the Goblin Thief
Thanks to Graysmith for the news.

The sets look REALLY good and the box art looks AMAZING!!!
I've never been interested in Elves but these look good, a nice amount of contrast in each set, but i'm digging that dragon a lot.
The biting eggplant mortars are neat :)
Wow--a new color for the basic 24 facet Gem!!! Not to mention that beautiful airship! I might actually have to make my first elves purchase...
I love the new gold elements!
A building with a suspended cage and a portal of some sort is visible in the background on each box. I suspect that is 41188 Breakout from the Goblin King's Fortress which is being released in the summer.
A lot of great new pieces/recolors. My daughter loves the Elves and honestly I can understand why. I think we spend more on Elves than any other theme these days, including stuff for myself. So if that says anything.
I don't know how many of these we will pick up right away, but if I find some good sales, I'll be sure to check them out.
I don't love the wacky mix-match colors on a lot of things, but I do appreciate the brighter colors for this setting on the whole.
I am loving the Goblin King. I wish the crown weren't on that hair piece though. It's an amazing color that I would use on my Noah minidoll when I'm playing with the kids in Heartlake City. Even without the crown, he'd stand out as a kingly minidoll.
Elves stands out because you are getting such a complete play world: buildings, landscapes, and vehicles. Elves sets really transport you to another world. I don't think there's a theme that does this more successfully than Elves. Ninjago and Friends are a distant second in my opinion. Elves--because of all the details--is never difficult or boring to play with.
Funny that the goblin king isn't a goblin!
That green dragon looks great.
Love the look of these, and how some of the architecture is the similar from sets from last year. The dragon looks great, and I like that the goblins have names.
My whole family loves the Elves theme. I wish the Goblin King's hair was a regular color for use with LOTR Elves, but it is still very nice. This theme is so much fun.
I'm very excited for these sets and can't wait to see more pictures of both these and the summer sets.
For those who are confused by the Goblin King not being a goblin himself, I believe he's an elf who has enslaved the normally non-aggressive goblins for his own sinister aims.
I like a lot of things about these sets. Emily's amulet is finally a real piece rather than just printed on the torso. There are more weapons than there have been previously—both the ramshackle devices used by the goblins and a boomerang wielded by Aira. Two things I had been eager to see in sets—a large airship and an evil dragon—are finally being realized. The goblins look great and I love the scaled-down architecture of their village. And we're getting a great assortment of new animals, including Mr. Spry, Hidee the chameleon, and Panthara the panther.
I am soooh going to steal some of these Goblin Village roof designs for my Nexo/Knightonia village moc.
Disappointed at the lack of articulated crotch print for the Goblin King though. No new Eighties hair piece either. Shame.
It's me or did the purple elve balloon looks like the Raid Zeppelin from Ninjago ?
In fact it's funny
@Carbo: What's wrong with the goblins? I think they're really cute. I love how colorful and expressive they are.
I'm super excited for these sets and the Netflix series that goes with them. It's neat how the logo has been revamped for this year. I hope this isn't the final year for Elves though… the fact that there's seemingly fewer sets than last year worries me a bit. I've become very invested in the LEGO Elves story and characters, and it has some of the most consistently strong set designs of any theme, IMO.
I love these, especially the green and black dragon.
@Aanchir: The first year had six winter sets and two summer sets. The second year had six winter sets and four summer sets. This year apparently has five winter sets and four summer sets. That puts it right between the other years in total number of sets. I'd be worried if the winter wave were only three sets and there weren't yet info about the summer wave. But that's not the case. I'd be surprised if Elves is gone after this year.
Having bought all but one of the previous elves sets for my kids, I fear, the troll theme is not as strong as both previous themes. Maybe there is a slight change in the theme, so that this years became a little bit more boy-orientated. Biggest treat for the kids is Emilys little sister, I guess. She and the goblin king were the main focus of my oldest. The trolls themselves... not so much. I think, compared to the cute little dragon babies, they lack the cuddly-collecting-appeal.
That Goblin King actually reminds me of David Bowie in Labyrinth, as both look nothing like a goblin. But really cool sets!
@GeorgeW8: You're not wrong to notice that. Wes Talbott, the designer of this set, said in his Bricklist here on this site that he got pointers on this airship from the designer of the Ninjago one.
All of the gold elements look awesome. I plan on creating a steampunk airship combining 41184: "Aira's Airship & the Amulet Chase" with 70603: "Raid Zeppelin". My brother is a huge steampunk fan so plan on doing that for him.
@jaitheartist
We require pictures upon completion of said airship!
Jkerre - I see what you did there.
^Emily's little sister, I believe. I absolutely hate the hair piece used on Sophie. I think it is the silliest thing--looks like a baby's hairstyle--and it first appeared on a women who works at a beauty salon in Heartlake City. How could you go to a beautician with such a goofy hairstyle?
I'm no plastics engineer, but it seems like--after looking and playing with them--it would not be too damaging (probably too expensive) to create a new minidoll mold that is the same as the current one but with legs that are a little shorter. I know there are several different leg molds--pants, cargo, long skirt, short skirt, shorts. Shortening just one mold design would be enough in my opinion. The one used for Sophie would be perfect, and it would be great to have little brother and sister minidolls that were actually shorter.
Also, it would open Friends up to a day camp and babysitting subthemes.
Sophie is the first sister to any minidoll character. To my knowledge at least.
Could the goblin be used for a Frozen troll?
^Frozen trolls have rounder ears. I don't know how Disney would feel about the pointier ears on the Elves goblins. They allow Olaf's lack of hair, so who knows?
It seems like TLG should have made the goblins two pieces: a body and a head. The bodies are pretty basic and could have proven versatile with different heads. I think they could have even been used as baby/toddler minidolls with a regular minidoll headpiece.
EDIT: Looking back at the box art, the goblins do look a bit on the plumper side to function as baby/toddler minidolls.
I also find it overly amusing that the goblin Smilin seems to be one of the few goblins not smiling! The thought that went into these figures!
(Forgive my opinions. I'm functioning on little sleep from a sick child.)
@Tediousity, The similarity between this theme and the film Labyrinth may extend beyond neither Goblin King looking particularly goblinoid. It seems that both revolve around a young heroine aided by friends who has to save her younger sibling from a Goblin King kidnapper.
@Ericjohn: Sophie's hair actually originated on Wyldstyle from The LEGO Movie before it was used in the Heartlake Hair Salon. I don't feel like it looks particularly babyish, though it does help Sophie look younger than Emily despite using the same body pieces
I see no reason why shorter mini-doll legs wouldn't be possible, but at the same time, I think it would look awkward if the length of the legs were the only thing you changed. Unlike the abstract look of the minifigure, the mini-doll is more human-like in its proportions, so I feel like a figure with teen/adult-sized arms and a teen-sized torso but kid-sized legs would look kind of silly. Even minifigure dwarves, hobbits, and children have to sort of deal with this by changing the circular part of the legs into more of a semicircle so it looks like the hips are raised partway up the torso piece.
That said, I think a dedicated kid body type for mini-dolls is overdue. Some of the LEGO Friends have kid brothers in the online webisodes, after all, but no hint of them in the sets.
Yep, the Goblin King is clearly an Elf gone the wrong way. I like the Labyrinth connection but take a look at his chest: whose logo has he been stealing?! Sauron is going to be mighty annoyed...
@blue_squadron: Sauron? My first thought was the Sheikah from The Legend of Zelda (though missing the teardrop under the eye). I know Wes Talbott is a Zelda fan...
