City Advent Calendar: Day 3
Posted by CapnRex101,
Christmas is associated with many different things, some of which are not present in every City Advent Calendar. Today's festive gift is one such offering and looks better than ever before, making very good use of just seventeen pieces.
Snowboarding is a chilly pursuit so yesterday's minifigure can return indoors today and warm. This fireplace is simply constructed but looks great, with a fire burning in the hearth and some dark tan masonry bricks adding a little textured detail. A similar technique was used in the 2013 calendar and it remains very effective here. The rustic style suits that of a cosy rural cottage, much like that shown on the box, so this model fits on the mat perfectly.
I like the pearl gold mantel above the fire but there is no room for ornaments which is a little disappointing. It might have been nice to see a stocking hanging from the chimney breast, just for an extra splash of colour, but the model works fairly well without it in my opinion.
Overall - 4.0 - Advent Calendars are intended to be festive and today's fireplace certainly fits the bill. The textured elements are used to good effect and I think the natural colour scheme looks superb, befitting a country cottage that would be ideal for spending Christmas.

This build could have honestly been muuch better, I think they should have just had one fire piece instead of wo, also, they should have added a stocking maybe. But I think it was still a good build.
I really liked that the display mat actually has a plae area for this to be placed in, with a firelight arc in front of it,
Quite agree, imho this year's display mat is great. Like the tracks for the steam loco from day 1, this fireplace area gets my hopes up that in the end the mat will make quite a nice scenario with many of the items from the calender.
Wow, review of advent calendar is so interesting...
