Christmas Build-Up: Day 8

Posted by ,

Those thinking that yesterday’s model was an owl and not a penguin have been swiftly proven wrong, as today brings us the perfect icy habitat for our arctic creature to inhabit.

This igloo is built in a micro-scale model and looks absolutely fantastic, with proper curvature, blue water underneath, and some 1x1 ice caps on all four corners. The structure is topped with a 2x2 circular jumper plate which is quite useful.

Of course, if you're extremely convinced that it's not an igloo, you can just ignore the arched front entrance and pretend it's residue falling off an iceberg - and perch the penguin on top. ;-)

My only issue is that, if it is indeed an igloo, the penguin isn’t able to fit inside, let alone be in scale. The latter would have been easier to accomplish, but either would have required many more parts. However, it is pretty much fine the way it is. On its own, it’s a miniature marvel!

Overall - 5.0 - besides the slight scaling problem, I can find no real faults in this beauty! Plus, it matches the winter theme a great deal.

@Brick Dangerous: ...and this is what it dropped! ;-)

By in Poland,

This looks like a flood.

Why would anyone try to build an igloo on water? I think the designer used the blue plates for contrast?
At least there are enough spare parts for us to add a layer of white plates for the igloo to sit on.

The owl can go and live somewhere else. :)

If it is accommodation for an arctic creature it has a better chance being the abode of an owl which is an arctic animal than a penguin which is found in the antarctic. The igloo does look like it is melting so may be time to move out either way.

I thought this was an iceberg floating on the water. In that regard it would make perfect sense for the penguin to sit on top.

^ You could very well be right... updated.

Errr... strange lump of an iceberg. Pretty meh.

By in Netherlands,

So it's a snow owl. Still on Team Owl

I'd be very surprised if it wasn't an igloo. Still, there's clearly no relation between one day and the next, so yesterday's model is clearly still an owl.

^ So you think!

Maybe we need the designer to come out and say what everything is, because it’s honestly frustrating...

Obviously The Lego Group takes global warming very seriously...
An igloo on the water looks strange, though.

All this Day 8 build vindicates is that a Dutch owl has an igloo-like floatie for her pool.

Why is it there are 254 pieces in this set at the designers disposal yet they turn out models like the windmill, owl/penguin, then this? I’d understand if we were building each one each day cumulatively, but we start with a palette of 254 pieces each day. I’m a hypocrite here as I’m no MOCer, but there must be better models hidden in this palette. What a Grinch I am.

By in New Zealand,

Definitely an owl.

Refer to the igloo in 10229 Winter Village Cottage for a Lego precedent.

By in Netherlands,

This definitely is an igloo. Well executed also, if you ask me.

@JRL: to me, these sets show kids that imagination not only goes into finding the right bricks to build something, but also in seeing something in a small build that might not be very accurate, but a close enough approximation. Yesterday's build is a perfect example how different people see different things in the same object. And nobody's really wrong!

Just kidding: the one from yesterday still is an owl. ;)

By in United States,

I love this igloo model. My favorite of this calendar so far. And yesterday’s Snowy Owl would love to perch on top waiting for a lemming to come scampering by in the snow ;)
Also, underneath could be blue ice.

... you guys all mean the weird mutant zombie owl, right?

These calendars are strange.
