Ship in a bottle washing up soon
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has just published this teaser image of the next Ideas set, 21313 Ship in a Bottle on social media.
We believe it's being released in the middle of January so a full reveal must surely be imminent.
Meanwhile, the projects that will be included in the third review of 2017 have been confirmed as:
These include three from RobenAnne and one from JKBrickworks, both of whom have been successful in the past. RobenAnne's 21310 Old Fishing Store is superb, and is many people's 'set of the year' so we can but hope that another of his projects succeeds, although personally I doubt it, so soon after the release of the fishing store.

Looks pretty cool already! I can't wait to see official set images!
I'll definitely be getting it!
That must be really tought for the jury committee.. since both 3 from RobenAnne are just "another level" compared to the rest.. so what would win? Political correctness or QUALITY?
Look forward to this.. And the tron cycle sounds promising too.. I heard about that on the brick fan,
Ship in a Bottle is a definite buy!
For the next round of Idea projects, I wouldn't mind adding Jaguar E-Type Roadster to my collection of Lego cars! None of the others interest me...
The 3 from RobenAnne are too similar to the Old Fishing Store and so they are not going to even consider them. Jaguar is the only one with real chance of winning.
Am I the only one who thinks releasing smack in the middle of the month for a non-VIP release is a little odd?
Either way, cool set, and I’ll try to get it whenever it’s available!
A definite display piece for sure.
This set will look so good on display. Can't wait to get it/
Wow, the Old Fishing Store x3. It's a cool set but personally I'm not interested in a rehash, let alone three. The pop-up book is a neat idea, but other than that, none of them really do it for me.
If the pop up book doesn’t pass I’ll be surprised, the rest are bland and uninteresting, and have been done before in other lego sets or ideas sets/finalists.
RobenAnne has had five sets get the 10,000 support level on Lego Ideas! Even if Lego does not approve these three models (and I hope they do), it should be a clear sign that we want this seaside theme expanded beyond the Old Fishing Store.
I'm hoping Pop-Up book is selected. I loved this model when first posted on Ideas. RobenAnne's models are great (I have yet to put together the Old Fishing Store), but not sure I would buy any more of that set unless they truly became a series of sets. I could then foresee creating my own seaside village, similar to the modular city buildings.
I think I remember a pop-up book like model, except it was a massive buddhist temple popping up. so it has some potential, though the model submitted here looks a bit simple.
well, here it is https://laughingsquid.com/a-lego-model-of-the-himeji-castle-in-japan-that-opens-like-a-pop-up-book/
I'll bet the book will make it.
The ship in a bottle is such a great idea and looks like a great display piece.
As to the new finalists, I am all for any/all of the RobenAnne sets, though I doubt LEGO feels the same. My guess is they will approve the pop-up book, which looks great and very original.
As to the ongoing finalists being considered (Gilmore Girls, Peru, shuttle, launch tower, etc.), I don't like their chances, but obviously we'll see...
I love the seaside theme and RobenAnne should really be being watched carefully by Lego - If they can't release multiple sets from the same creator under the ideas program, give that man a job creating a new theme.
I'll be getting that ship!
As for the review, i love the RobenAnne sets, but i doubt any of the three will be approved. I love the Fishing Store and these look equally cool.
I love RobenAnne's work a whole lot and think they should be hired for their own seaside town line, but LEGO is very careful about not releasing Ideas sets that could form a 'theme' of their own, so I feel like those three are unlikely to make it sadly. I could see the Jaguar making it, but the Caterham Ideas set is just retiring now, which makes it far less likely I think. Finally, the RuPaul's Brick Race would be great, but I think is unlikely because the content of the show is a lot more adult than any of the other shows LEGO has done sets for, and I think they'd be uncomfortable with that.
All that said, I think the pop-up book has a ton of potential. The interior would probably get a serious reworking to make the scenes really pop, and hopefully it would include multiple scenes that could be included. I think it could be one of the best LEGO Ideas sets ever if they really jumped on board with the idea.
There's clearly demand for expansion of the Old Fishing Store into a proper theme. Would be a great development.
That said, I'm partial to the Christmas Story House - perhaps this year's WV release???
I’m so excited to see the ship in a bottle!
Final design looking a lot better than the original submission. I'm actually looking forward to this one now.
Here's to hoping the Jaguar E-Type is chosen during the next round. Although I hope LEGO's designers can make it a bit curvier and true to the car.
I can't wait to buy the Ship in a Bottle. I can see myself getting several sets to make a range of ships displayed in bottles. The model is quite a lot smaller than the Idea as submitted though.
I hope the E-Type jag gets through. Imagine that as a Creator set with its V12 engine.
I'd buy all of the RobenAnne sets if they were produced! Would be happy with the Jag too. Book is clever and may be chosen for uniqueness, but not something I'd buy. I know nothing about Christmas Story or RuPaul so no interest in those either.
Hoping the Ship has a reasonable UK price. Would be ideal if it's available at John Lewis as I have a gift card to spend :)
I think the smaller model size has really hurt the ship which is suppose to be the star of set.
Hoping for another RobenAnne, since they have no fixed deadlines they could pick all three and explore what would make for one great addition - and then have it extend the life of current set (like train station and Simpsons before)
I do think they are selling the gestalt sensation of "ship in a bottle" what with the improvements to the bottle and base details. But the stubby ship and loss of cool details like extra rigging are deal killers for me.
That’ll look great on the mantelpiece.
I don't see any of the RobenAnne sets making it, despite them being great models. Personally, I'd like to see the Jag, but then I'm always all for Lego cars. The rest I'm not interested so much...
Oh, the ship. The bottle does look fantastic :) I'm very likely to buy this.
Would love that Ru Paul’s Drag Race set and a lot of non-Lego fans I know would too.
I would expect the chances of it passing to be zero?
Will pick up the ship in a bottle for my desk (as if it’s not cluttered enough)
I hope they do choose another one of RobenAnne's creations, although I doubt they will either. Old Fishing Store is one of my favorite sets, and would love to have something proper beside it. Any of his three, or maybe the Christmas Story house, would be the only sets that I would purchase from this wave. Not sure about Ship In A Bottle Yet, will have to wait to see official pics, but I'll most likely save the funds for something else.
I have to agree with some of the comments above, I’d expect the pop-up book and th jag getting approved. Given the new modular, and the old fishing store still on the shelf I doubt the others will make it through despite being amazing designs. Maybe Lego will take this and create a modular seaside port/harbour it would be amazing!
BTW, the problem I had with the Old Fishing Store is that it was a *really* boring build. No new techniques and loads of repetitive tiling - I honestly expected a lot more. Sure, the end result looks very nice, but it was just not satisfying. The same applies to other "dollhouse" builds such as Ghostbusters HQ and Haunted House - they look impressive, but can't hold a candle to the modulars or to Ninjago City when it comes to the build experience.
Lego doesn't like to take too-big risks, so it's entirely possible the Dive Shop will win given the universal acclaim and sales of Old Fishing Store. If they can bring in the Dive Shop for a significantly lower price it may actually satisfy everyone who grumbled about OFS. Even if it doesn't win they should just hire this guy to give their sets some atmosphere & mood.
Anyway, I'd be happy to shell out for a RuPaul set if the Dive Shop doesn't win.
Lighthouse is the only one I'd have any remote interest in. Maybe the book one.
As nice as the Old Fishing Shop set is, I really don't think they should be releasing these slight variations on the same theme. I doubt they will though, unless that set sold like absolute crazy, which I doubt since there weren't shortages a la the Saturn V rocket.
Fingers crossed for the pop-up book!
Oh, and the ship in a bottle looks cool, though personally I'd much rather put the model inside a real glass bottle, the brick-built bottle just doesn't work unless LEGO had been willing to make some new, very specialised molds to give the bottle as few seams as possible.
Guys, do you really think that RuPaul has any chances? C'mon...
Pop-up book is the absolute essence of Ideas line - original idea, clever realization, fun etc.
Popup Book would be good to get.
Ooh! The Christmas Story house is a good example of pop culture. I wonder how they'd show the leg lamp or the Red Ryder BB gun...
I know the Expert Modular Buildings probably take a lot of time to develop, design and approve. I wonder if these IDEAS full scale buildings like the Green Bait Shop and now the Blue Lighthouse or the Boathouse Diner are tempting to get approved quickly to get more large buildings on the market?
I really hope the pop-up book makes it. It's fun, imaginative and has that Maze-like quality of really encouraging people to tinker with both the works and the design.
The pop-up book and the three seaside buildings look great, I hope one out of those four projects passes... clearly there's a large demand for RobenAnne's buildings, another one would be very popular if they released it after the Old Fishing Store is nearing the end of its life.
Can't wait for Ship In A Bottle to be released! I will definitely be getting it as I supported it on LegoIdeas.com! TLG's version does look quite a bit smaller though...
I would buy all 3 of RobenAnne buildings if they released them.
If they dont and he makes parts list and instructions available i would buy and BrickLink them all.
Anyone else planning on building the bottle first then assembling this in the traditional method?
I like this smaller version of ship in a bottle quite a bit better than the larger one. I think it's far more accurate; do bottles as large as the original submission even exist? Even so, this bottle has fewer seams and will make for a cheaper set. I wasn't planning on getting this when it was approved, but now I think I'll have to pick one up.
What RobenAnne should get is a job offer from LEGO as a designer! I love the Old Fishing Store, and all his designs on Ideas are just fabulous. I especially like the lighthouse this time. But agree with the above, doing an entire theme within the Ideas line just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. (they should seriously give him a permanent position though!)
Am looking forward to the ship for sure. Creative, fun idea that will make a great office display.
I—probably—wouldn’t buy it if it somehow was released (which would leave the entire LEGO community gobsmacked), but the RuPaul set is a really nice, LEGO-like build and a good representation of the show. The RuPaul minifigures are spot-on and pretty delightful.
The only set here that is realistically tempting to me is the pop-up book.
I'm really looking forward to the Ship in a Bottle - why not - it's even totally unlicensed in terms of brands we already know! Not even NASA licensed. But the other ideas that have passed the 10,000 mark for the upcoming review are a little surprising:-
- The Jaguar seems like a good candidate and is less obscure than the Caterham but many other car designs have been overlooked
- The pop up book is also good for different reasons - with some great ingenuity. Multiple 'stories' to assemble would be even better.
- All the 'building' designs are great (as you'd expect) but seem a little too similar to what we already have. Either release a range of modular seaside buildings or let them go at this point I reckon.
- I don't know how RuPaul's Drag Race got so hyped. What next? An American Idol studio set? The Apprentice Boardroom? The program is popular but I don't see the realistic market for a Lego set there, at least in the UK. Much the same as that Golden Girls set that got over 10,000 votes. I didn't have to actually Google what the Drag Race was to find out though - so it's got modernity on its side in comparison.
The Pop up book or Jaguar for me at the next results!
The Ship in a Bottle set sounds unexciting to me, although props to the designer and also I could see the uses and MOC possibilities in all of those glass pieces.
For this round of sets, I'm really hoping we get the pop-out book set. It would look great on my (non-existent) empty bookshelf.
Ship in a Bottle looks great, definite buy for me.
As for the sets in review, I would love an E-type Jag (but in "Shaguar" colour scheme ;-) obviously). The pop-up book has great potential too. Very curious to see the results of LEGO's voting.
RuPaul's Drag Race though, WTF? Who voted for this? And what is the source material? The only time I have heard the name RuPaul in my entire life was in connection with some forgettable old Elton John duet song. And that seems ages ago.
Edit: thanks to the wonders of Google I now know what the source material is. Even more reason to shake my head. C'mon, reality TV is dead. The only thing you can become after having been on such a show is POTUS. And we all know how that office has gone down the drain in recent times... ;-P
That is one squashed ship...
I've googled for this set. There is a bad quality image which shows the set. It looks not that impressive imho.
I'm surprised with how many people like the RuPaul set. There's no way that's going to be made into a set. The pop-up book should win. As another poster said, it's really the essence of what Ideas is about. It's original, unique, and shows how creative people can be with Lego.
I am almost expecting that LEGO will reject every submission this time around. For the reasons mentioned above. It would not be the first time they rejected everyone. Just sayin!
Just hoping it comes with that nice stand...
When I saw the leaked ship in a bottle image I had to go back and look at the original because it definitely didn't evoke the same feeling. The bottle definitely looks nicer and the stand a bit more polished, but the ship is terribly sacrificed due to shrinking the set. I really liked the concept and was going to get this one but it may have been changed too much
The Jaguar would be the only one of those suggested I would get if it became a set.
All the others just seem too much of a long shot to get approved.
I'd be lying if I said I thought the RuPaul Set had any such luck at passing, that said, I have my toes, fingers, arms and legs crossed in hope! C'mon pop culture!
