New feature: record your loose parts collection

Posted by ,

One of the most requested features in our recent suggestion survey was to be able to record your loose parts collection, as you can loose minifigs.

This is now implemented and you can start using it today. See the tutorial article How to view and record the parts you own to learn now.

I've tested the code extensively but there may be a few teething troubles so if you encounter any let me know via the contact form at the bottom of the page or in the comments.

By in Netherlands,

Yes! Finally! This is not only very useful, but it's also convenient I don't have to use multiple websites, apps or custom excel sheets to keep track of my collection.

By in Australia,

Is there a feature for adding custom minifigs ?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No, there never will be.

By in United Kingdom,

Nice work!

One other limitation is that Lego only lists each set as having a maximum of 200 of the same piece, so if a set has 650 black Technic pins, it'll only show as having 200.

Wow, how awesome is that!! Thanks Brickset. Your tireless work is just brilliant.

By in United Kingdom,

Thank you for this feature!

By in Norway,

Good timing, I'm almost done sorting my collection!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Thank you for this feature. Unfortunately it does not work for me :( When I check "I own" and enter value 4 to part 50163, which I bought 4x extra from LEGO (I own once ), the page does not remember it when I return to this element again. I tried several times. Does it work for anyone?

^ After entering the quantity you have to move 'focus' to another control by pressing the tab key, or clicking elsewhere on the page, which is also the case for entering quantities owned of sets.

By in Serbia,

Oh boy. This will be a challenge, I probably have close to 300k loose parts.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Brilliant, thanks. Where to start!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This is awesome. Have been longing for that feature for a long time, yet would never have dared to ask for it.

Keep up the good work!

And @Paperballpark Re: limitation to 200 parts max per type per set: I first noticed that with the Tower Bridge, where my collection showed far fewer tan cheese slopes than the set contained.
:-)

Very very usefull for me!
Thank you so much Brickset, this is awesome!
Fantastic addition to the site, keep up the good work!

THE SUPER-FEATURE TASK:

Is there a way that you could create a list with sets that I could build with the parts I own?!

So, If now I've recorded all my parts in here, you're giving me a list of sets that I could build with these parts, which I record here (= which I own).

Respectively give me a list of parts I would still need, if I want to build 10221, for example.

Is there a way of achieving this on your site in some time? Maybe you're already working on such a feature?! Let me (us?) know!

Cheers,
TysLym

Terrific, I've not tried using it yet but I have a lot of bricklink orders I'll be entering. Thanks so much for this feature!

Gravatar
By in United States,

YESSS! My vote! I'm sure that people's collections will almost double with this new feature...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really brilliant stuff. Now I just need somebody to go through the unorganized tubs of loose parts I have.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Personally I'm not sure how many people will actually bother to do that. I certainly won't, I'd rather spend the time building.

But, it was a requested feature and relatively easy to add so make use of it if you wish to.

By in United States,

Awesome - thanks Huw!!

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

Thanks Huw, great feature!

Gravatar
By in United States,

way to many loose parts no way i'm able to track them. whenever i see Lego's at yard sale or thrift i grab em.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Taking OCD sorting to a whole new level! ;)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Huh, nice ^^ I don't see myself using this feature, personally; but it is very neat to know that it exists now.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Nice feature! As a Bricklink user, this feature will be very useful when I'll have to make orders!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Interesting feature but until I can point a camera at my spare parts bin and have it spit out a tabulated inventory, I can't imagine myself going through the work of cataloging everything. But for building wanted lists, that could be handy. I keep my wanted lists on Bricklink since that's where I buy parts anyway, but could be nice to have here, too.

By in Canada,

Innovation is why Brickset is my first stop for all things Lego.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks Huw, this feature will be very helpful. I've bought a few hard-to-find and unusual pieces over the years that I've considered selling later after tearing apart the MOC. Usually I forget about them and sort them into my collection. This will be a great way to log these pieces for future use! (Although I may end up entering my whole collection over time...)

I second the request for parting out sets. I started working on the Cafe Corner a few weeks ago and found that I already owned roughly half of it (the least expensive half)! I would love to be given suggestions for what sets I can build based on the pieces I already own.

By in Switzerland,

Great feature
Many thanks Huw

I have started to enter my loose parts.
I have a small question.
I own two ANIMAL NO. 1 (https://brickset.com/parts/design-34137), one from the set 60162 and a second one I have ordered on the LEGO Bricks & Pieces page.
Now in the MY COLLECTION pop-up, it shows:
My Collection
Owned (1)
Owned in sets (1)
Owned loose (1)

I would have expected the "Owned" is the sum of the "Owned in sets" and "Owned loose".

Am I wrong?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The total shown is not the number of parts owned but the number of different parts owned, so 1, 1,1 is correct.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

`^ Thanks Huw

I played a bit and have now entered the part design 30602 (https://brickset.com/parts/design-30602).
Yes, I have customized my Ferris Wheel.
It's now clear for me.
These are the filters, CHOOSE A COLOUR, CHOOSE A YEAR and MY COLLECTION.

Great
I will make use of this feature.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I honestly wouldn't even know where to start, but agreed.. great feature Huw!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is a brilliant feature!

At some future point would you consider adding an "in use" flag on parts/sets so you can tell whether a part in your collection is available to use on a project?

Keep up the great work on Brickset!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Now if this synced with Bricklink and added all my orders automatically, I could see me using it. As it stands, if I started this process, I would never have time to actually build anything ever again! Cool update though.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Great feature, that's going to come handy!

I seem to have run into an issue:
If I try adding a part I do not own in my sets from its the element ID page (e.g https://brickset.com/parts/6218841), the "Your collection" tab does not show up. I have to enter it using a set inventory or when browsing by design ID.

Also, is there a shortcut to copy/move a whole set to loose w/o manually checking each part?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am so excited for this!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice, this is a cool feature.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Good thing I kept all those pick-a-brick order confirmations. Now to find the time to catalogue everything...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@dbrouge the drop-down will only show when there's more than on option to list, e.g. owned and not owned, so if you own the only part in the list it won't be shown.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Great feature, thanks!

Regarding dbrouge's issue, which I just encountered too: Huw, I think you misunderstand it - the problem is that on a part detail page, the box (not a drop-down) "your collection" between "part details" and "buy at bricklink" isn't shown when I don't own that part yet - which was okay before, but it now means the new "I own"/"I want" checkboxes+edit fields for loose parts are also missing.

But thanks to dbrouge for the inventory/design ID hint. :)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

...and just found another issue: The field is really limited to 999? Come on, LUGBULKing AFOLs need larger numbers than that! :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Thank-you for adding this feature, its things like this that highlights just how well this site is operated.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is pretty cool. I've been trying to keep track of my parts collection for an X-Wing MOC and have used bricklink so far for the pieces I want. This will make it much easier to find out if I already have pieces I need.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hi Huw,
Great feature, well done, love the idea.
Is there any chance however to add an extra field, or an editable note field (like in sets), so we can write with our loose parts something brief for refrence ourselves to where we store that loose item for quicker access. Ie ie we can write 'shelf 2 box 3 slot 10' ourselves or however anyone stores their own?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would love to have the option to add advent calendar micro sets, the same way we can add loose minifigures.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@cimddwc, thanks, I'll get that sorted.

Gravatar
By in South Korea,

It's Awesome! I really want to this function and i can enjoy more LEGO life with this great function. Thanks so much!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is awesome! Can you please add a feature to sync Bricklink or Brickowl lists into our wanted parts collection? That way I could I just look at one list or category, instead of 50 different lists, I have on Bricklink, it'd be all in one spot. syncing parts with rebrickable would be good too.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

@cimddwc Yeah, grabbing just one cup of 1x1's at a PaB gives you way more than 1000.. ;-)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Will there ever be an option to fix incomplete part inventories? I can add parts now, but a lot of the sets aren't even accurate, parts-wise. I know that's not Brickset's fault, but it would be nice if we could fix it (and then others could double check).
