Trolls minifigures revealed
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has just posted a video on Twitter that reveals the Trolls World Tour minifigures for the first time.
The film will screen in March so we can expect the sets to be available in January,
Watch the video and see more stills after the break, then let us know what you think in the comments!

I will now have nightmares.
And this year’s inside tour set is...
Oh god
Appropriately ugly, just like their movie counterparts.
Why not any other license? Star Trek, LOTR(needs to return), Doctor Who, anything Else
I hope it's not really the gift for those who will participate in the Inside Tour next year. Otherwise ... that sucks ... A completely useless subject for me.
........... I will check if they have good parts, that and not the figures or theme will interests me.
Yeah, why?!?!? It’s almost as if Lego thinks they are a toy company for kids... ugh! ;-)
The fig heads aren’t even repurposable :(
Too far away from a LEGO look for me.
I don't watch Trolls, but these look amazing!!! LEGO really went all out with these new moulds. And what we could expect of the LEGO Ideas Sesame Street minifigs!
Only the dead know peace from this evil.
Oh... How to unsee this?
The fires here in California are bad enough...
I like it! I’m not going to buy but I at least think whoever does is getting good molds!
Are these minifigures horrific and demonic? Of course. Do I still want them for the novelty and the new pieces? Absolutely! Depends on if I like any of the sets, but I particularly want that weird giraffe thing and the other big molded one with Hagrid's arms in a new color. It's nice that LEGO is branching out into different licenses and I'm also excited to see the Minions sets.
Oh yes, no new molds for cool exclusive sets or printed parts, but this is what we get :O
Actually, this means we may get new molds for the Sesame Street Ideas set, and we could possibly get the Halo license from Mega Blocks, which would be epic.
I'm mildly disappointed in the plastic hair, I am aware that actual hair would be atrocious to keep clean and intact but it was equally difficult to keep clean and intact on the original troll figures :P
I know a few kids who are gonna love these. :)
I can’t wait for them to go on clearance so I can get them for my son.
These look great, in my opinion. My kids love these movies and the cartoons. It looks like a CMF, but I don’t think it is...
Well, I think that the overall quality of the figures will be good. The biggest thing that concerns me is how many new moulds there are here. I was expecting them to take a route similar to Overwatch with the standard Troll characters (such as the two protagonists). Maybe have their faces printed onto a Minifigure head and then have the hairs/hats be a separate piece that'll allow for a lot more versatility. I can see why the more specialized characters like the 4-legged one and the big guy need something unique, but I can't help but feel that many of these parts will be designed a bit too specific to the Trolls.
Still, I think that if a kid picks these up, then they're going to have fun with them. Now, all we have to do is wait and see if the actual sets are interesting. If I recall correctly, the movie focuses on going around to areas themed after different genres of music. That could potentially lead to some interesting playsets that could provide some useful elements outside this line!
Phew! My money can stay safely in my wallet - for now...
They certainly look...
...different..
...in an interesting way.
I've no idea what 'Trolls' is, and I doubt this will end up being for me, but that's fine. If kids are going to like these, all the better for Lego.
Nope, these look awful, reminders of the 2016 Angry Birds theme. Potentially a bad seller theme
These make me miss LEGO Simpsons.
Excited for these torsos, but that's probably it.
Can't believe how quickly it became passé to hate on LEGO Trolls.
They look very un-LEGO-like.
Why did TLG get this licence? Dumbest business decision ever.
The figures seem well-made, but they look horrific…
Huh.
Out of all thing CW dc shows,Nintendo,Jumanji etc it had to be trolls :|
They give us special heads for trolls...but not toy story 4?
Not my thing but I'm not exactly the target demo here. I can see kids loving these things, regardless of their familiarity with the source material. No idea whether or not it will end up a good license buy for Lego...time and sales reports will tell.
Erm, I totally don't want to be rude, but MY EYES ARE BURNING! WHY?! ALL I WANT IS A GOOD SLEEP!
Q. Will you spend millions on new molds for one little kids' movie?
LEGO: Yes!
Q. Will you print the sides of minifigure arms and legs for your dedicated LEGO Star Wars fans?
LEGO: No.
Messed up, people. Other than that, these are good figures that I will not be buying.
OMG so many new molds for that!!! They wanted to be troll on internet lol . I am so disappointed by that license so many money spend like the angry ugly birds...????
Hey Lego... If you want a licence around Trolls to use... I present to you Dreamworks "Troll Hunters, Tales from Arcadia".... Or failing that the found footage film "Troll Hunter"...
....
....
....
"TROLLLLLLLLL!"
Y'know what? these look nice for kids who like the trolls movies and that's perfectly fine. Not everything has to appeal to AFOLs, and I'm glad that TLG doesn't pander to us and still focuses on the child demographic.
Some of the new little bits such as the double heart piece and the sunflower shape can be used in Friends (if they aren't already).
Other than that, I count nine new molds.
Five heads.
Giraffe guy.
Blue blob guy. (Could be 2 new molds?)
Tiny trans blue guy.
Teal guitar.
Don’t worry, the people these sets are aimed at will probably enjoy them. Those it’s not aimed at won’t enjoy them.
The whole license is doomed to fail, I'm afraid. I see this in good company of Lego Angry Birds, DC Superhero Girls - and probably even Minions.
At first glance, these were horrible. They've really grown on me though, and if the sets are anything like this minifig aesthetic, this is the theme I'm looking forward to most next year. Hopefully all the hate gives them some deep discounts.
The super wide and thin smiles are pretty creepy but other than that they did a good job of capturing the characters.
All in all though I'm not that interested, but I really hope the Dreamworks partnership opens the door to How To Train Your Dragon and Shrek sets. Even if just for castle mocs those franchises would be super fun to have.
Hey, afols! If you have not seen the movie, get some shots or a joint (whatever is legal in your country) and watch it. It’s super funny, great music and looks awesome.
I have seen the movie with my kids multiple times, l love the characters therefore l’m super excited.
I can see though this theme being a failure..
I miss the Lord of the Rings...
@TomKazutara Speed Racer and MBA definitely don't belong on that list
No please
Spare us from this
Run while you still can
So LEGO won't make parts in new colors for the IDEAS Dinosaurs but they do THIS? Someone please explain why this is better.
My Eyes! The goggles do nothing!
I'm too old to be a judge of what the kiddies would buy. I never would have guessed the popularity of Ninjago. I did see the first trolls movie and liked it, as did my family. Looks like these would be right up my daughter's alley, but I'll just wait and see. I'll say this. I know Trolls better than Overwatch. I didn't cry because Lego produced some video game minifigs I didn't care about. I won't cry about these either. I'm at least 75% more likely to buy these than those, especially if my daughter sees the pink troll.
Straight to the bargain bin...
No mold for Scooby but they make this? Unbelievably pathetic.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahg>:(
These are so ugly, I will not have them in my household, even IF my kids want them eventually.
Quite the marmite of lego!
I personally loved the first trolls movie and can’t wait for the next one. I’m coming down on the I love these figures side of the marmite reaction.
My children might like these. The holiday film has been watched a fair amount
While I have no interest in these, I showed this to my 5 year old daughter and her immediate response was, “Can we get them all?” :) I have a very active LEGO family and there’s something fun for all of us!
Internet trolls, trolling Lego Trolls
This ain't it
Lepin, are you back already?
Shows this to my friend who's kid was huge fan of the Trolls movie. She had zero interest in the figure and apparently 'trolls are rubbish now'.
Really don't know who they've aquired this licence for but it seems in their target audience its too late. Think this'll be a single wave and gone theme.
72 comments and only 17 likes...... The Trolls were well received ahahahah
Why would LEGO make these new minifigs who starts quarrels or upsets people on the Internet to distract and sow discord by posting inflammatory and digressive, extraneous, or off topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses and normalizing tangential discussion, whether for the troll's amusement or a specific gain.
Certified Bruh Moment.
I wish the comments about these weren't so utterly predictable. For some reason anything colorful, cartoony, and/or even vaguely girly tends to get a visceral negative reaction from AFOLs, without fail.
These look cute and accurate to the on-screen characters. If the movie does well like its predecessor did, I think these should be popular, especially among younger boys and girls.
As an AFOL who hasn't seen either movie, I am impressed that despite not using "traditional" minifigure heads it does look like they have a shared head mold with separate hairpieces instead of all-in-one head pieces like the Simpsons figs. That could potentially make their hair pieces more useful in MOCs. As a fan of the podcasts My Brother, My Brother and Me and The Adventure Zone, I'm also curious whether any of the McElroy brothers' characters will be included, though I won't be able to know for sure until I at least know what their characters even look like.
So are these supposed to be a alternate minifig series like Unikitty? I can't imagine LEGO would think sets would sell.
I think they look pretty good. Looks like a good representation of the source movie. Curious to see how interchangeable the components are. Looks like there might be a common head for many of them with a new flexible hair piece in the same plastic the mini-dolls use.
Short-leg with short skirt on Poppy looks like a new piece that could make it into the regular mini-fig lines.
I’m not sure why all the hate for these.
I’m not bothered, and neither is my wife.
But I just showed my 2 girls the pictures, and they now desperately want them.
So that’s 50% of my household who will want these sets!
Please remember who the Trolls movie’s target audience is.
@Sci_Fi_Brix Have you seen the sets already!?
Anyway, WHY all the negativity? NONE of the sets is target at you AFOLs out there, so why all the fuzz, be happy for the kids instead.
@Lyichir I think we have seen Justin's character, at least. I saw him listed as the "Techno Beat Drop Button", which I think was that sort of square-based character in the Techno Trolls' domain. Considering he seems to hold a "plot point" for the movie, wouldn't be surprised if they make him even just a printed tile, since he's a simple square.
Aside from that, I honestly find the sets cute. I haven't checked out Trolls in full yet, but I have two cousins that love both LEGO and Trolls, so I think this would be perfect for them!
Oh no.
an other licence fail like angry birds. Angry Birds Movie Fail sets fail. this will do the same.
Hello The Lego Company ? No new Pirates ? No new Real Train Sets like Engines and Waggons ? No new LOTR ? No new Simpsons Set ?
but spending millions for this BS Licence and make again dust collecting Sets are someone in the Office learn from Unikitty, Power Puff Girls, Angry Birds or DC Super Hero Girls ? i guess not at all. Lego made a lot of new molds and spend a lot of money for this BS Themes which nobody really care and wanna buy.
Very Disappointing.
I am seeing a future cookie monster in that blue body:) I hope the kids like the sets, and, as always, I hope sales are good for Lego.
It looks like the heads have 4 studs on the top so you can change the hair/hats up.
As valid as discussions about why Lego can’t print pieces or produce new molds for big ticket sets are, these actually look pretty great for what they are.
It’ll all come down to how appealing the sets appear for kids (remember, we aren’t the target audience here folks), and certainly seems more of a hot button licence than Angry Birds or Powerpuff Girls.
half of them look fake, and the other half that´ s not fake looking looks bad
I have to believe that in licenced sets like these that the licence holder shares some of the production cost of the development. It would make sense for them to invest to produce new molds for their licenced items. I think that blaming LEGO for not creating new molds/on some sets and then seeing all these news molds would support that. I don’t think it’s a fair comparison.
Darn, I checked the date and it's not April 1st...…..
I will point out in a more positive spin what Just2Good mentioned in his online reaction; a lot of the accessories will be great for Lego Minifigures, especially the skirt piece and its commendable that the hair pieces are interchangeable.
No its not my cup of tea, hence my earlier tongue in cheek response regarding "only the dead know peace..." regarding this. Personally most of my gripes have less to do with Lego and more with the modern day Universal-Dreamworks-Illumination triad behind this franchise. What can I say, I miss my days of Dreamworks making films like Shrek, Chicken Run or Prince of Egypt (even Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon), and worry that now that they are sister studio to Illumination we're going to watch what remaining quality they had go down the toilet. Its more of my millennial nostalgia, and my generation is known for that nostalgia. But again, these toys are as others pointed out made for kids, not adults. If Lego was for me; we'd have a Who Framed Roger Rabbit figures as part of Disney Series 3, a collectible series with Warner Brothers for Looney Tunes, a dedicated train theme, and relaunches of Classic Space and Bionicle in the works... but that's not the case since I am not quite the target audience Lego is shooting for.
These articles always remind me of how close-minded AFOL’s can be.
It's hilarious that basically every preferable alternative being suggested in the comments is something mainly popular among OLDER audiences.
Have y'all considered that the intended purpose of this theme — a topical license aimed at younger kids, potentially even at a 4+ age range like Cars 3, Incredibles 3, or Toy Story 4 — would not be fulfilled in the slightest by sets or brands with an older-skewing audience like Lord of the Rings, The Simpsons, Jumanji, or DC CW shows?
Something tells me that LEGO would be more likely to take the AFOL community's concerns to heart if we didn't tend to respond to anything obviously aimed at demographics other than our own with outright contempt.
We can all pretend that disliking themes that ended up underperforming in the past proves that we tend to be prescient about this sort of thing, but that loses some of its punch when AFOLs have a track record of responding just as viciously to the announcement of much better-performing themes like Agents, Power Miners, Atlantis, Ninjago, Friends, Legends of Chima, Nexo Knights, Minecraft, Elves, etc. After all, a even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Eww...no
No
No. Bad, Lego. Bad. Go to your room and make me a Kingdom line.
Now. Go!
It looks like it’s going to be a new mystery minifigure collection and not a new theme/wave of sets.
^Aanchir is totally correct. I'm an old AFOL but I love these figs! The best thing here is the (hilarious) ironic roar of the AFOL "trolls" when confronted with positive, colourful, fun trolls. I've seen these movies with my kids and (after expecting to really not like them) I found them funny and entertaining. These figs are a perfect representation of these cute characters.
I'm clearly not a fan of this new theme. I wish Lego would create an original theme instead of liscensed ones. Someday I can work for Lego and make a original theme (but I'm progressing and I'm still in college).
We’re supposed to be positive here on Brickset now, so in that spirit the most positive thing I can say about LEGO Trolls is....
.....
ermm, ermm.... nope, nothing.
Well, they're certainly ... interesting.
Maybe the bright colours and shapes will appeal to kids like the Unikitty sets did and, oh, wait, hang on.
But they're a movie tie-in, so the sets will appeal to kids like the Angry Birds sets did and, oh, wait, hang on.
It's a no from me. If these are what floats your Lego boat, then more power to you, but I'll pass, I think. They look like Mega Bloks.
Well, I wasn't enthousiastic about the theme, but the first teaser looked rather attractive by itself, and now Lego is selling of all their mould misfits.
They should have continued Lego Dots. Not sure if I'll expose my daughter to this.
What the?...
I say we take off and nuke these things from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Whilst I’m personally not a fan of the figures, mostly because they are too far from a Lego minifigure look for me to appreciate (why bother making it Lego at all, these could just be trolls action figures?), I don’t actually have an issue with Lego dabbling in a new theme of sets; in fact I love it!
What does upset me a little however, as a huge Lego Star Wars fan in particular, is how much money Lego is prepared to throw at elaborate new moulds and prints for a theme that is at best a bit of a marketing gamble, when it isn’t prepared to have prints instead of stickers in sets costing way over £100 in other themes!
“You’re not the target audience. Therefore you cannot have an opinion on it. “
Wow.
@ohrmazd is right. There will be more new pieces if a company has a bigger share in the profits of a licenced line (like with Overwatch). It also means *relatively* lower prices because Lego has a shared deal with the licence holder instead of paying everything for the licence (like with Disney/Star Wars)
It doesn't look like these sets will contain structures as the figures are all different sizes, so I wonder if they will be accompanied by some interesting scenery?
These are horrendous, I hope the minions look better.
Obviously, most AFOL, YAFOL, and TFOL will not like these so to just generalize every lego fan that is not in elementary school will not like this. As much as I look down on this theme I just hope LEGO makes a good quick profit from this because things like this will not last long. I expect this theme to retire in around 2 years. Remember, LEGO agrees to make these themes because its just good business :)
And Justin Timberlake finally gets to be a minifigure.
*Make a violent theme (e.g. Overwatch, Stranger Things) *
People get angry.
*Make a child-oriented theme (e.g. this)*
People get angry.
Granted, most of these reactions are from different people. I haven’t seen Trolls nor do I intend to see the sequel, but I find it commendable that they were able to make figures and molds this accurate to the source material. Nonetheless, I can see why people think they look a bit off. I don’t mean to come off as rude to anyone for or against the theme. I’ll just put it at this; if you don’t like it, don’t buy it. If you do like, maybe buy it.
@LegoSonicBoy:
@HobbyBros:
Nope. Ideas is not allowed to make new molds. _IF_ they do a Sesame Street set, and if the set performs well enough to justify expanding it into a regular theme, _THEN_ they can start making new molds. But only then. Ghostbusters and Back to the Future both made do with existing hairstyles, and both saw minifigs get updated when the themes moved beyond their initial Ideas release. Minecraft's first set was one of the microscale sets, which was great if you wanted piles of 1x1 tiles in rare colors, but the theme evolved into minifig-scale sets that never would have been allowed for the initial Ideas release. Adventure Time only had brick-built characters, but they made two new elements when Jake and Finn jumped to Dimensions.
@kfr:
Back in 1959, Thomas Dam of Denmark designed little troll dolls that had squished up, prunelike faces, generally naked bodies with no genitalia and short limbs, and a big sprout of actual synthetic hair in bright colors. They enjoyed brief spurts of fad popularity in the US. Dreamworks licensed the property for the first movie, and bought the IP outright for the sequel.
@CCC:
That's no worse than what Maryann did in Gilligan's Island. The female Islander is the first topless female minifig with visible breast flesh (they depicted the shape with curves, but tossed a lei around her neck to hide anything that a bikini top would cover). The alter ego of the Green Goblin from the Spiderman theme is the first human minifig to have a completely bare torso (sans deco), and the German Mechanic from Indiana Jones is the first human to have a completely bare torso with muscle deco. The S3 Rapper is the first minifig with exposed underwear. The guy who got attacked by the first brown bear is the first minifig to be wearing nothing but underwear (boxers with red bear paw prints). And the new S19 Shower Guy is the first human minifig that's technically completely naked (if you take off his towel-skirt, all he's supposed to be wearing is bubbles). There are a number of non-human minifigs that are going full-commando (the S8 bat dude that gave us the molds for Batman villain Man-Bat is one), but there's no way I can list them all off the top of my head. The Grey from S6 is one I'm unsure of. It _looks_ like it's not wearing any clothes, but the hips and hands are dark-bley while everything else is light-bley. So, is it wearing gloves and a Speedo, or is it just natural skin pigmentation?
@FuddRuckus:
Your count is off. The headgear is removable (you can see a gap under the 10-gallon hat). So, I'm counting one head, _six_ distinct headgear (possibly seven, if the big troll has removable hair), the giraffe body, three parts on the big guy (body and two arms), the tiny trans-light blue guy, the guitar, and the plastic skirt. The dark-purple ghost may also have a new ghost "legs"
@MataNui2009:
Both Shrek and HTTYD are officially considered to be completed IPs, so I don't know that they'll be really looking to bring new merchandising partners on board. It's not to say that they wouldn't consider it, but without any franchise expansion to hang a theme around, it's highly doubtful that LEGO would bite.
@JDC:
Huh? Scooby-Doo had two bodies and one head, and all four of the Scooby gang had unique hairstyles. Beyond that, the only villain I can recall getting a new mold is the Headless Horseman with the Jack-o-Lantern hat. The Jack-o-Lantern is, oddly enough, the only one of these seven elements to be used outside of the Scooby-Doo theme.
@xboxtravis7992:
Aardman Animations actually made Chicken Run. Dreamworks was mostly just brought on board to help finance it.
@Aanchir:
Is now a good time to ask for a Teen Titans Go! theme?
@PurpleDave That's really disappointing about the head molds with lego ideas.
These minifigures certainly have the potential to appeal to their target audiences and I think the characters are rendered rather nicely when compared with the film. Synthetic hair would have been interesting but I imagine that would be difficult for LEGO to manufacture without significant investment in new machinery and product testing.
However, I agree with those expressing surprise at the apparent plethora of new elements. Adequate investment is very important when developing new themes but creating thirteen new pieces, at least, with limited versatility seems excessive in my opinion. Maybe that cost was supplemented by DreamWorks.
@PurpleDave - I believe the large blue character, apparently named Biggie which seems appropriate, features Hagrid's arms.
New mould wise, these look very similar to duplo in terms of aesthetics, and I don't know what proportion of duplo pieces are new or specialised each year.
Having said that, if the juniors market is the right demographic, I don't know if this is the right timing for this IP
“No mold for Scooby but they make this? Unbelievably pathetic.”
I meant Dino :-)
@PurpleDave: Oh right, I forgot about that... now I'm really turned off considering the minifigures were the number 2 reason I couldn't in good conscience support the proposal (it was number 1 when it was still collecting votes, but I have a different number 1 reason now). Muppets absolutely do not translate well to minifig or brick-built-minifig-scale form. A nitpick of my own if you will: they're already working on the Ideas set, so that part isn't a what-if anymore.
Heh, the comments to likes ratio on this article is strong :)
Calm down people, Lego is for everyone, and most of you (and me) are clearly not the target audience.
However, my 3yo daughter is a huge Trolls fan, and would love to get these.
Haters are gonna hate. Trolls never was meant to target AFOLs. I think they look pretty good. Now lets see if movie will translate into demand for the sets. TLM2 obviously didn't pan out awesome for LEGO movie tie-in sets.
AFOLs will be using these minifigs for trolling memes. I will be collecting most of them if not all as long as they are cheap like the Angry Birds ones in the aftermarket.
Oh my god, The Lego Group, that well known producer of children's toys, is producing products that are not appealing to me, a 38 year old adult. Quickly, I need to write some passive agressive comments online!
(Only half joking :D )
Lego dreamworks trolls and yet still no Wizard Of Oz set ????
Well the first movie wasn't bad, kids loved it and they'll love this sets. That's what's about. Minifig aside, maybe there will be some nice set.
Also, they surely went all in with new moulds for this theme!
Wonderfully different!
Why complain when something really unusul comes along?
A plethora of new moulds is always a risky prospect. Hopefully the market they expected when they started is still there when the sets come out.
Nice for kids / target public ( not me btw ), but a bit frustrating to see all these new molds.. While Star Wars fans are already waiting 20+ years for certain aliens that haven't been made yet...
Because.. you know, new molds are expensive..
If there are sets for this movie that aren't 4+ I'll be really upset and confused, mainly because incredibles 3 and toy story 4 were exclusively 4+ and those have way more older fans than trolls
Cursed.
Holy crud!!!! This is the stuff of nightmares. Ah, my eyes!!!
Seriously, this doesn't even look like a product of LEGO. And a little word of advice LEGO--don't make new specialized models unless you know the parts will be used a lot, and it's not looking generic enough to get a load of CMF series out of it, much like MEGA did with the Minions. Definitely, they've got several million in tooling alone. I sure hope this sells enough for LEGO to break even. I know Unikitty around here didn't sell well at all (besides, the TV series was outright unbearable). But Unikitty didn't use a load of new molds, thankfully.
Funny. I am ussually the grumpy one but these look great!
They are using normal minifig pieces and hairpieces seems to be separate from head!
The torsos will be great for fantasy mocs.
The sets surely will be filled with great colors, and these pictures already show we are getting new "sprue"set of trolls accesories!
I hope these do well with kids. I fear they will not. If not I hope they’re chock full of good parts. Seems like a lot of new molds for what I fear will be a bust.
It looks like there may be some good arms and hands for monochrome minifigure building.
For anyone who thought I was hating this set, it's not that, I simply think this will end up like Angry Birds. I don't "hate" these things. I just find them kind of strange and not LEGO-like.
So many cool themes Lego could bring back and they're coming with this....
@CapnRex101 : I imagine that moreso than manufacturing challenges, the biggest problem with synthetic hair in a building toy like Lego would be its propensity to get caught between or tangled in parts when building. For single-piece "dolls" that's less of a concern, but for Lego I can understand why they might have opted for plastic or rubberized plastic molds instead.
Horrid. Look cheap and un-Lego like. This year's Angry Birds is......
I am sure the actual look is based on whatever licensing agreement terms LEGO had to abide by and focus group research, i.e. kids wanted figures to look like this.
Remember, LEGO doesn't WANT to make new molds unless they have to, because those things are expensive.
I have no interest in the theme, and I find the look of these things off-putting. But I am not the target audience, and people need to remember that they are not legally bound to buy everything TLG puts out.
Wait does the farmer one have centaur legs?
Like I hope they do good centaur legs in the Harry Potter theme next year
But these are something anyway
@HobbyBros:
And yet it's a restriction that was probably instrumental in getting the Cuusoo/Ideas program off the ground. They pointedly said they didn't want people just posting projects consisting of new elements, and under the original premise for this theme I'm sure they never expected to achieve the success that some of these sets have netted. If you produce a single run of a set, in low quantities, the money's just not there to pay for even one new mold, and in many cases they're also setting up an IP license just so they can produce a single set.
@CapnRex101:
Are they? I only dabble in the HP stuff, so the only Hagrid I own is a standard minifig custom version that I whipped up because I needed to be able to put him on a motorcycle.
@JDC:
https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=54125pb02
Just sayin'...
@LegoSonicBoy:
Right, forgot they already announced it. There's just so many Ideas sets in various stages of pipeline these days that I have a hard time keeping all of them straight. One just released two months ago, one is due out in a week, there are four more that have been announced, there's a large group of them that just went into review, and there's a growing number hitting 10k for the next review.
@Joffrey98:
I think that just got even less likely thanks to TLM2. The Wicked Witch first appeared in Dimensions, and reappeared with two flying monkeys in one of the TLBM sets. Dorothy and her friends, on the other hand, came out in the TLM2 CMF line, and someone involved in the design of Steamboat Willie once said that the CMF team is a bit ornery about letting other themes use their minifigs. You'd need them to give up permission for _four_ minifigs (and a little dog, too), or you'd need to completely redesign the minifig deco. Either will be a tough pitch. Anyways, 20 years from now would be an ideal time to revisit this, since that would allow them to tie it in to the 100th anniversary of the movie.
No thanks,
and why?
ugh...
@Joffrey98
There is a cool Wizard of Oz set on Lego Ideas if you want to support that.
@Your_Future_President: It's perfectly fine to have an opinion on sets that aren't aimed at us. I mean, I disliked the LEGO Disney Palace Pets brand and sets, and have brought it up plenty of times.
At the same time, it's absurdly arrogant to believe our opinions on sets that were never intended for us are somehow realistic appraisals of whether the sets will sell, or whether it was a good or bad decision to make them. Particularly when hardly anybody bringing up stuff they think LEGO should have done instead of this is making the slightest effort to suggest brands/genres that would appeal to a remotely similar demographic.
@Wrecknbuild: I'm pretty sure LEGO Dots is still intended to be released next year, and only got delayed because a new material they had been planning to use for slap bracelet bands which would be a big part of the theme, (as shown here: https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/1f/79/29/89d826bb77e287/WO2019076710A1.pdf ) fell short of their quality standards, and they needed time to find a suitable alternative.
In the voice of Gru's mother when he is trying to get her excited about the rockets he designed/built as a kid:
Meh.
Seriously though, which kid has ever heard of Trolls? Is this a thing in the US? This will go on 75+% discount (at least over here) even faster than other sales bombs no one has ever heard of like Adventure Time, Unikitty, Angry Birds or Scooby-Doo.
Plus, those Trolls figures look nothing like LEGO but rather like that cheap plastic crap you get in Kinder surprise eggs or chewing gum vending machines.
Want more reasons for the hate?
New molds for sets where they would indeed make sense or even just new colours for existing parts? Oh no, can't be done. Too expensive, adds too much complexity to logistics. But hey, loads of totally new molds for an entire theme that is destined to total failure from day one? Sure, why not?
By the way, I have shown the images to our kids and there was zero interest. Might be due to the fact that no one has ever heard of Trolls. They even asked me if this was really LEGO because it looks nothing like either Minifigs or Friends Minidolls. Go figure.
@AustinPowers, you do realize these directly coincide with a feature film being released, right? In fact, it’s the second film of the series being released in theaters. The article mentions the film even...
@monkyby87 : no, I have never heard of that film let alone a series of films before nor do our kids. If there has been such a film it can't have been much of a success or else there would have been some kind of associated merchandise, McDonalds tie-ins or the like. And even though we regularly go to fast food places like the Big M or Burger King we never had any Trolls related items in our Happy Meals / King boxes.
Edit: just looked it up on Wikipedia and like I thought it apparently didn't do too well over here.
My ability to tell real minifigures from fake ones has been completely compromised.
I'm pretty neutral on most new themes, but what I really don't like about these minifigs is the color combinations and overall color choices. The paint-on-body work looks muddy and irregular, and the things don't look like any of the troll merchandise I've seen elsewhere, which can be cute and colorful in its own oddball way. So I'm pretty disappointed and plan to buy zero. Looks like there are eight of them pictured -- does anyone know if subgroups of them come in sets, or (shudder) is this going to be a CMF set? (Please say No!)
@AustinPowers:
If they're releasing a licensed set, you can be pretty certain it's a "thing" in the US, or that they expect it to be. For instance, Scooby-Doo has been a household name for just over five decades (Sept 13 was the 50th anniversary of the first series' debut episode). There have been about a dozen different series produced for four different networks (not to mention all the networks that have picked up older series in syndication), two live-action movies, and countless animated direct-to-video movies. We can put Scoob on our club layouts, and almost nobody fails to identify him (usually the ones who can't are really young). Adventure Time was also a very popular animated series on Cartoon Network, which ran for 10 seasons and occasionally hit 3 million viewers. I'm not sure why it didn't do better, except that they only released three sets based on the IP. Two were Year 2 Dimensions packs (one of which was hard to find anywhere but TRU, which usually marked up the price 20-30%), and the third was a bunch of brick-built characters that really didn't fit with anything else they've ever released. Additionally, the audience was fairly split, running from young kids (the target audience) to college students. The Ideas set probably didn't appeal to young kids because it didn't lend itself very well to play, and the Dimensions stuff wasn't really selling well by Year 2. As a source of minifigs, it was expensive (starting at 4x what CMFs cost). As a source of parts, it was _REALLY_ expensive. Most people only bought them if they were actually playing the game.
Angry Birds, I think just comes down to the fact that it started out as a silly little mobile app. People watched the movie, sure, but they probably weren't really invested in the birds as characters, and the sets didn't really do a great job of incorporating the gameplay.
Unikitty...I'm surprised about. She was very popular in the first film, and Cloud Cuckoo Land was a very popular set. More sets based off that same premise seemed like a sure thing, but maybe people just didn't latch on to the new characters they came up with for the show.

I looked on Wiki also and could not find where it said it did not do well in Germany. I must have missed it. I have several friends in Germany, (granted 1/2 of them are stationed there with the US military). But the other 1/2 are native. And they have all heard of Trolls.
And as far as I could tell from wiki, it was received well and did good.
And we still have some trolls merchandise from then.
Great for everyone who likes these mini-figures. Those who don't like them don't be disheartened, I am sure we will see many other sets/mini-figures that will appeal more to your liking.
It is nice to see Lego testing out other things not the norm. Not everything can be a home run, but for the most part they are still headed in the right direction.
Cheers people of the brick.
@AustinPowers, maybe it didn’t do well in Germany, I can’t attest to that. But in the US it was well known. It has several big American stars providing the voices and did decent for a kids movie.
Like many people on this site, you’ve made a lot of assumptions based entirely on opinion, and that opinion has very few facts for support. But you’re free to hate the theme for whatever reasons you feel.
[internally screams] I think I just got gassed with some of the Scarecrows Fear Toxin
@AustinPowers According to Wikipedia, Trolls grossed $346.8 million ($153.7 million in US and Canada, plus $193.2 million in other countries) on a $125 million budget. As an American, I can definitely say that it was well known in the United States.
According to the sources at Wikipedia no.29 at the German box office, with over 1 million people buying tickets. Not the most successful film of 2016, but far from a failure.
A quick Google search also shows McDonalds Germany having Trolls merchandise in their Happy Meal in November 2016.
The plural of anecdote is not data.
I haven't seen the movie but this has certainly caught my attention. If only the intended target audience could have a voice here.
I normally like a bunch of mini figures from each of the minifig series, but these are just awful. Why, Lego?
@monkyby87 : I never said I hate the theme. What I do hate is that TLG likes to say that new molds or colours of parts are too expensive or too much of a hassle logistically but they have no problem introducing so many new molds for a theme that is just as guaranteed to fail commercially as all the others mentioned before.
And @stlux : if there was 1 million tickets sold that means that how many kids saw the movie? Kids can't watch a movie unaccompanied, so it's realistic to assume that at least half of that one million was adults accompanying their kids. Now let's say some liked it so much that they went several times, that reduces the number even more. And even if one million people saw the film over here that means over 80 million didn't see it.
After a while you get a feeling for what will sell and what won't. And just like those other themes that didn't sell, even in the US where the source material is much more popular than over here, this theme will not sell well either.
As for why Unikitty didn't sell by the way, I think that was due to pricing as there was hardly ever a theme as vastly overpriced.
I think these are adorable. I also think the Powerpuff Girls are adorable. And the Angry Birds things are quite sweet too.
Star Wars on the other hand is boring. All those grey bricks. Yawn.
These don’t even look bad. Are you all complaining and calling them demonic because they’re colorful and aimed at kids? Is your ego so fragile that seeing Lego make child oriented sets causes you to be embarrassed to like it or something? Because that’s the vibe I’m getting.
I think they look great, in fact. The molded heads look screen accurate and lend themselves well with Lego’s blocky aesthetic. The new pieces look interesting and it’s always fascinating to see how TLG approaches desining cartoon characters.
Stop overreacting. Nobody thinks it’s cute or quirky or original. With literally every theme comes people picking it apart to no end. Angry Birds, Unikitty, Hidden Side, etc. The Spongebob Squarepants theme got me into Lego when I was about 9 years old. Nowadays everybody would be cursing Lego in the comment section for Mr. Krabs being “nightmare fuel” or something. Trolls will do the same for some other children. Why not be happy about that! More prospective Lego fans who can grow up and love it just the same as you do.
These sets aren’t going to do bad because a bunch of online adults think they’re ugly. Kids will want them. Parents will buy them. The movie’s relevance will fade and the theme will end. In the mean time, nobody is forcing you to buy the sets or even look at the photos (and...spend time composing a comment on how much they’ve disappointed you lmao)
Guarantee the comments section for the Minions minifigure reveal will be exactly the same. Can’t wait to see you all moaning there about how you’re all out of touch once more.
Yikes. Absolutely silly looking, but I hope TLG makes a big pile of cash with this. What's the saying? 'A rising tide lifts all boats.'
They are different and fun. I am definitely NOT the target demographic (senior citizen) but I really love them! Will definitely be adding to my collection.
