Celebrating 110 years of Old Trafford - iconic stadium gets its own LEGO set

For the first time ever, Manchester United fans can now build and showcase a unique and authentic LEGO model of the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

[London, January 13th] Manchester United and LEGO fans alike can now build Old Trafford brick by brick. The 3898-piece LEGO Creator Expert model is a spectacular tribute to one of football’s most iconic stadiums and makes for a true collector’s item that is bound to take centre spot at home or the office.

The model is a true celebration of the passion for the game shared by fans all over the world, paying special homage to Manchester United fans. Developed particularly for fans aged sixteen and up, the high attention to detail makes this LEGO model of Old Trafford so special. The 1:600 replica model features several authentic details including the United Trinity statue and the Munich memorial clock.

The model will bring Old Trafford to the homes of Manchester United’s enormous fan base of 659M fans worldwide and to those that have not yet been able to experience the stadium in person.

Manchester United’s Director of Partnerships, Sean Jefferson comments: “Our Old Trafford stadium is as iconic as Manchester United itself and we are proud to be able to bring it to life in LEGO form. I think everyone has played with LEGO bricks at some point in their life, however it’s still amazing to see the level of detail the LEGO designers have managed to recreate in this piece. We are sure it will be hugely popular amongst Manchester United and LEGO fans alike.”

Building this set is sure to be a nostalgic experience for Manchester United fans while also providing a rewarding building experience for LEGO fans. The building instructions include information on the stadium and its rich heritage and history as well as the designers that have brought the set to life.

“To create Old Trafford in LEGO bricks was a tremendous design challenge for the team, and we couldn’t be happier with the result. The 110-year-old stadium provided us with so many important locations, features and stories to tell as we constructed this model. We are excited for our fans to be able to experience all of that history and attention to detail as they construct and proudly display this iconic stadium.” – Michael Psiaki, LEGO Design Master.

Kickoff is on January 16th 2020 when the model will be available directly from LEGO Retail Stores and www.LEGO.com/Old-Trafford exclusively for LEGO VIP members, with general availability beginning February 1st 2020, in time for the stadium’s 110th anniversary.

You can view more pictures on the set details page. We will have our review prepared in a few days.

... Okay

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I'm not a football (soccer for Americans) fan, but this looks really good! I wonder if this will be the start of something similar in the future...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'd buy a non-league ground, but any of the big 6 teams? No way, they've got plenty money as is. Decent model all the same, but not something I want to support.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Wrong stadium and team.

Gravatar
By in United States,

One side of the Atlantic will appreciate this much more than another

Gravatar
By in United States,

Should be an architect set but whatever.. looks good, not a must unless you really like football.

Gravatar
By in United States,

"The first opportunity to construct a replica of Manchester United’s Old Trafford from building bricks."
Well I guess Lego knows there will soon be a Chinese bootleg, so they've become sheepish/ironic in their remark here.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Imagine selling this at the Liverpool brand store...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't really follow the team, or the sport at all, so I'll probably pass on this one. But I will admit it does look quite nice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks like a solid parts pack if nothing else! I'll probably have to wait to see the parts list and likely a discount as $300 is a bit steep but I'm interested for sure

Gravatar
By in United States,

Stickers...lol

Gravatar
By in United States,

Who... wrote this press release? It’s just painful. You don’t need to include “Manchester United” in every paragraph, we got it the first time around.

Anyways. I don’t really care about sports so I won’t be getting this, but it’s a pretty good looking set honestly. So I guess if you like soccer it’s a win.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm amazed they're making this. It's so niche.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really like the way this modular construction seems to come together. That’s an interesting way to complete the assembly that will make it a fun project - particularly for the football families out there.

It does seem to be a very niche market, which doesn’t include me personally. This thing seems to only hit the center of the Venn Diagram.

- If you don’t like football/soccer then you’re out; and even if you do you have to like this one team.

- Massive and expensive set to buy and display. The Friends Ideas set was small enough that Friends fans who weren’t even into LEGO had a reason to buy.

Biggest (potential) negative from my POV - that looks like it comes with a very big sticker sheet...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not interested. Should please David Beckham though.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

It's a nice model, but the market for this is pretty limited. Lego really loves to cater to the U.K.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Never thought I'd see escapism listed as an official feature of a Lego set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is that David Beckham in the official photos?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

For all the people commenting that this is just a niche product and a sport that only folk in Europe care about. Man U are a global brand. Every country I have visited from the US to the Philippines know who they are and will sell the shirts.

I can see exactly why Lego are doing this

However I am not a Man U fan so I won't buy it but if this is the start of licensing a few stadia it could be a new theme like architecture.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

"It offers escapism... with a long and satisfying project"

Did Ole write that bit?

I'm not a Utd fan, but not an ABU either. As a generic football fan it's an impressive model but I'm not sure how much crossover there is between Lego and Utd fans to merit a £250 set... but then Utd are a marketing juggernaut so are in a select handful of teams that could probably pull this off.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Doesn't look bad, and interesting build techniques, but I still have the year 2000 Soccer Playset.

(even tho the figures don't clutch onto regular studs anymore after standing on those special spring stands for 20 years)

The City 2020 Service Station had a soccer match sticker on the television, wonder if we get more soccer/sports related minifig sets then.

Just pure speculation, as there was a Fair Poster sticker in a 2019 winter Downtown Fire set, and there was a Fair People Pack in Summer 2019, as well as more sports appearing into LEGO again :
- 2018 Mountain Biker with Sports torso
- 2019 Ski Resort with Sports Branding

2020:
- Xtra Sports Polybag
- Soccer Sticker
- 20 year since the year 2000 Soccer theme , which was during Euro 2000 Soccer Tournament, now for Euro 2020 is hosted in many European countries.
-2020 is an Olympic Year (Tokyo)
- Table Tennis in the 2020 Police Station, Skateboards, both Olympic Sports.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is this market anymore limited than other sets that depict regional locations or icons?

Either way, looks alright, but does seem quite niche and in the United States I have no idea what this is.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd have preferred a 3rd addition to Ninjago City, w/maybe a small soccer pitch if needed.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

If y'all think this has 'very limited appeal' y'all must not know how popular Manchester United is all over Europe. I'm in Poland and I know soo many fans of this team. Lego is pushing hard to make their products popular among 35+ people and this set is a perfect example of this.
On a separate note- the poll lacks an answer "I want it but I am too poor". I don't think it's too expensive, I just dont have enough money.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not a Man U fan, but the set itself is impressive. Wish my team was big enough to warrant a Lego set. Great set for Manchester fans.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Although its a high piece count & price its still not that big!

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Hard pass.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No interest from me (I don't like football) but that's a good set.
Those of you who think this will just appeal to British people, or think it's the wrong team have a lot to learn. MUFC has probably the biggest football fanbase on the planet, and most of them are in SE Asia, not the UK. There are many more in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and quite a few in South America too. This will sell well across the globe.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I will not be purchasing this, I am a die hard Liverpool fan, so there is no way I can bring myself to have this in my house. Hope one day they can do a Anfield one.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Next stadium Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam please.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Have they ever pitched a set so strongly towards adults as this?
"This building kit for adults..."
"LEGO Creator Expert advanced building sets allow adults to construct models..."
"A spectacular building set for adults..."
"This 3,898-piece big LEGO football set for adults..."
Surprised it still says 16+!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks cool, not for me. I actually get happy when Lego makes sets I don't want!

Wait for the 50% off sale. It will happen in a few months. ;)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I'm not at all a sports fan but this looks epic.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think it’s a great looking set but it would be nice if the designers (and I know there is a big office in the UK) could get out a bit more and provide sets of other structures in the world. I have Big Ben and Tower Bridge but it would be great to recognize some other architectural marvels for a change outside the UK.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

It'll be a cold day in hell before I buy that and have my cash funnelled to Man Ure. Looks good at first glance, though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This will be discounted heavily.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks good... but as I support another team I would never buy this... plus very expensive! Would have been nice if they included some minifigs... I suspect a lot of Beckham fans would want this set if he was a minifig.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is that a 1 x 8 x 3 slope underneath the seats...? (see the set details page)

Gravatar
By in Austria,

I'm not interested in football. BUT: i'm interested in LEGO - therefore i will buy this set. That should be the reason.

Unfortunately there are those out there who say wrong sport, wrong team and other childish reasons not to buy this set.

It's fun, it's LEGO - and that is what is all about.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lego is obviously trying to cater for a specific niche. How it will turn out, we will see. I can tell though that Lego fanbase in UK is massive - you can see it from all the UK themed releases, Lego is popular.

Although this set is not for me, I welcome that Lego is willing to release niche sets like this one, because then they might also releases ones that are in my niche. I don't intend to buy every large set anyway (who has that much money and space?), so don't see it taking away release space from other sets. There are plenty sets out there that I like I haven't bought yet, and the list keeps increasing...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

While I definitely don't want this I think it captures the stadium really well and for soccer fans it's a nice display model.
I'd really like to see the Creator Expert line focus more on minifigure scale models but that's just my opinion.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Its basically an Architecture set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As a counterpoint to those saying UK-centric releases abound, and to those mentioning this set's appeal around the world:

There are those of us in the UK who have less than no interest in this release.

Yes, I'm sure ManU supporting LEGO fans will be going mad for it, but I honestly wish I could expunge the knowledge of this utterly pointless (in my personal, subjective opinion) set from my mind.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Camp nou would be a better choice IMO...

Gravatar
By in United States,

So LEGO thought the rest of the world didn't want the Asian sets last year, or the Olympic sets from 2012 but they think people want to spend $300 on this?

This would be an 'OK Boomer' moment if LEGO were a human.

Gravatar
By in France,

Looks amazing as a build and display piece. Not for me as i support an arch rival.

Looking forward to seeing some MOCs that use this set to make another generic stadium for our lego cities....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Couldn't care less about any football team but but I admire the architecture in this model and tbh though I hate football I night buy this and repurpose the stadium to another sports stadium.

But £249.99 seems a wee steep for me so might be a present I ask for a VIP point redemption.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Yawn...

Gravatar
By in United States,

As I am not a sports fan of any kind, this does not interest me at all. Seems strange that LEGO would choose such a divided subject to approach.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm American, so soccer doesn't really interest me, but to be fair, neither does football (I really only watch it if it happens to be on).

HOWEVER, this set looks very good. I'd probably buy it if it was less expensive, but I can't afford much in the way of Creator Expert models, so yeah.

The set looks great overall though!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm not really interested in this as I'm not a fan of MU or football in general so an easy pass, interesting that Lego have gone for such a small section of Lego builders (I know there are millions of fans of M U but how many can afford or even want this).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice, but 5 (some might say 10) years too late.

But when the NFL finally contracts with LEGO, we'll see about 15 of these come out.

You're quite right: LEGO has adults in its sights. The reason that LEGO is stressing the adult aspect is to appeal to non-AFOL adults who might still think of LEGO as a "kids' toy". LEGO doesn't cater to existing AFOLs; it targets adults through other interests such as architecture who might become AFOLs. In other words, it's about acquisition, not retention.

So many haters lol. I'm a United fan and will be buying this. It looks amazing.

I'll pass.

YES!

It's one of the neatest looking stadiums in any sports on the planet. They already have deals with LEGO with fan only sets on game days. That would have made sense to me over this boring rectangle of a set.

Fenway Park will be 120 in a few years.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would be more interested if it was a minifig scale soccer stadium, though I don't want to think about that cost. Don't care at all about the team, one way or the other.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can see it as a big failure. First, not everyone is into sports, let alone soccer. Second, the number of fans of this team is pretty small globally. Third, it's a large and expensive set. And so on. I would rather have a smaller, stand alone, unbranded sports stadium or maybe in the city or architecture line.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Interesting, looks more like an architecture set more than a creator one to be honest but looks fantastic none the less. Shame iam not a man united supporter

Perhaps in countries that don't have teams of international format, but I can't imagine ManU having lots of fans in say Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, or over here in Germany. Many of my colleagues and friends are devout football/soccer fans of various German clubs. None of them would ever dream about being a ManU fan - or fan of any other non-German club.

Come to think of it, I don't think our local LEGO store in Frankfurt will dare to offer let alone display this set here. It would be guaranteed to make the store window get vandalized. Would be the same if TLG offered a set of the Bayern München stadium - or any other club other than Eintracht Frankfurt ;-)

That being said, I find it funny that this set is listed as Creator even though the packaging looks like an Architecture set (which would be much more fitting anyway).
Whatever, more money saved this year as I have zero interest in this set, not being into football at all. Now if LEGO made a set of Alexandra Palace, I might be tempted - but only because I am a fan of the PDC Darts World Cup, and Ally Pally has such an iconic ring to it for me. :-)

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Come on! This is a day 1 set for so many people in Singapore and Asia. We followed soccer since 80s/90s and there are at least tens of millions of fans of Man U in Asia. People even named their sons after Ryan Giggs and David Beckham.

The only negative thing I’ll say is that this set came about 20 years late. If it had came just after 1999 (treble winning), even non-Man U fans will buy. Today’s Man U is nowhere near the Man U of the past.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The most entertaining comments I’ve read in a while. I do love the intensity of sports fandom.

Don’t mind me, I’m still drowning in my tears from the Baltimore loss over the weekend. Though looking at this set, it looks like there are a lot of parts that could be used to re-create M&T Bank Stadium. Shame the seats aren’t purple... :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think I see a new curved window piece! Last pic, top middle. looks like 1x4x3. you can see it better in other pics, but the last one zooms in on the general area.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

So what club is this for? Doesn't really say in the press release.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Camp Nou
San Siro
Bernabéu
Westfalen
Wembley

Hmmmm, I hope they don't, otherwise this is going to cost me lots of money!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Anfield next please. Liverpool stadium just as iconic, if not more. YNWA

Gravatar
By in United States,

If they were to to make more stadiums in the future I would enjoy a Mercedes Benz Stadium from Atlanta. They already have the Mercedes Licence and they'd just need one from the Falcons & or Atlanta United. I would love to see them pull off a covered stadium.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

What a burn for the Man Ure fans when they realized the proceeds going to be used to pay Jesse Lingard late night parties and a bunch of overated players.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

@Tms95 said:

Even some Italian stadiums (San Siro (Milan), Olimpico (Rome), San Paolo (Naples),...) would have been a nicer choice. But I'm talking as an Italian follower, so...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well there we are, But rather specific , there may be 659M fans worldwide, but how many non Man U fans are there? They will all be rather annoyed. And out of 659M how many like lego THAT much to spend £250 on this set. Maybe if they had done Wembley and threw in some extra pieces people could have been inspired to make their local clubs stadiums? Maybe even Rugby stadiums. Its a nice model, a bit too expensive and too specific for me though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm a Man City fan, so can't buy this one, but would be all over a similar replica of the Etihad. That said, I do think this is a very cool model and hope it's successful, so they can continue with the rest of the Big 6 PL teams.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nothing wrong with the model... But even here, just 16 miles from the ground itself, Man U support is at an all-time low. This would be much better suited to Asian exclusive status than the Chinese New Year stuff.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

This particular set is not in my alley but I lost it completly when I saw the "no, it's the wrong team" among the poll options.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Set looks good, but I echo the comments about the nicheness of this product. And I recognize that Man U has a global fanbase, but the set is so large and expensive that you're already catering to a very small pool of people. Add in soccer's nutty passions, and you're creating a product that a good number of people will actually REFUSE TO OWN out of pure spite.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

50+ stickers!!!!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would've rather seen a more neutral stadium, such as Wembley (or even better, old Wembley Stadium!), then one belonging to a specific club (one that I am not only not a supporter of, but that I also actively root against!)

But I understand why they chose the home of Manchester Utd...it's a giant global sports brand.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@CCC, that all depends on your definition, or rather theirs, of bricks. Whatever that other model was made out of, for Lego it probably doesn’t really qualify as bricks. So while you think they’re lying, they’re just using their words carefully.

And don’t be ignorant; you really think they’re going to acknowledge some lesser known kit from a possible competitor?

Gravatar
By in United States,

In the non-likely event LEGO teams up with the NFL is the only time I would be willing to pay $300 for a stadium replica... But then we’d get the same complaints we’re seeing here, but from opposite regions. This set does look well done, and everyone is allowed their opinion. With that said, I will not buy this set. I’m not a soccer fan, and I’m from a country where soccer is the least popular sport. While I have no doubt that each LEGO store in this country will sell at least 5 sets each, I can’t imagine people here will flock to the stores to get their hands on this set on release day like they would for others. Nothing wrong with that, as I’m sure TLG put a lot of research and thought into this set and how it will benefit their company before announcing it. But I’m saying here in the USA, it might not be as successful as other countries.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm English but do not care for football outside of Euro/World Cups.

However I will totally admit that this is a great looking set. I can certainly see it being a nice centerpiece to someones collection (Lego/football or both).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe I'm missing something, but other than the UK, I don't know who the market for this set is nor why it's being marketed at me. On the other hand, if it were only marketed and sold in the UK, there'd be tons of people complaining that it's exclusive, so perhaps scattering the seed wide was the right strategy.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

" If you don’t like football/soccer then you’re out; and even if you do you have to like this one team"

Disagree with that statement, I have a friend who can not stand football and has never followed it, but is buying this set day one. As the building appeals to him not the sport, and I'm sure there are others with the same attitude, people seem to assume that you need some sort of attachment to a franchise to have any appeal. There are people out there that enjoy building lego regardless of what it's based on..

Gravatar
By in United States,

If this was manchester’s Hacienda I would buy.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Come on, you Gunners!
So no.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

No, not interested in football, and not interested in this Lego set. Easy pass for me.
I do not see how this can appeal to anyone other than only some Manchester United fans.
It is not even a beautiful stadium, the majority of stadiums aren't IMO (functionality over form), but that could make the difference in having a wider appeal to both Lego and architecture fans. This is not an architectural marvel, something aesthetically pleasing to behold and build, rather the opposite.
Maybe TLG are testing a different avenue with this?!? If football fans are willing to pay exorbitant prices for football T-shirts, then maybe they are also willing to spend a fortune on a Lego set of their favourite team?!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@TheBigLegoski
I am not interested in football either or watching any sports to be frank, but I think it is a cool looking Lego set. That's all that matters for me. It is way down my priority list, but I see its appeal, even if only limited. I may pick it up at 30-40% off at some point.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think the poll result so far says it all: fewer than 20% of respondents have said they'll buy it.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It looks great but I won't buy it because it's not my favorite team. If they would make a Feyenoord Stadium set then I would buy it no questions asked.

Where are they voting from? There are more MUFC fans in Malaysia than there are in the UK.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Probably an obvious answer, but do each of the Premier League clubs have the freedom to make their own separate licensing deals, or is there an overall umbrella agreement with profit sharing for the entire league?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Seems kind of small for the price. How can that be 3900 pieces?

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

I absolutely love the look of the pitch. The whole design of the model looks good as well, except maybe for a couple odd and not so good looking decisions. Why isn't the baseplate rectangular? Octagon doesn't seem right.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As someone from America who has no interest in soccer and doesn't have the slightest clue about Man United, I'm not interested. It looks great, but there's other, far more recognizable stadiums I would buy. Wembley, for example. Maybe at half off I'd get it. Maybe.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Gravatar
By in United States,

Taking a positive angle, I hope that this will inspire Lego to produce more niche sets aimed at adult fans. My only irritation is that we get this while there are so many classic themes that could use some love that never get any. I can only assume they have market data that shows I am in the minority.

I am not interested in football either or watching any sports to be frank, but I think it is a cool looking Lego set. That's all that matters for me. It is way down my priority list, but I see its appeal, even if only limited. I may pick it up at 30-40% off at some point."

That is great, happy building times. What appeals to me, will not necessarily appeal to others and vice versa. My comment is merely my opinion on this set and view on the broader appeal I think it will have, or rather its limits. If TLG group designed a huge AND really well designed set of the Roman Colosseum, or the Arles Amphitheatre (France), then I might be super excited about such a set. Hell, I suppose if TLG manages to pull off designing a Lego set of the National Stadium in Beijing, China, designed by the Swiss engineering firm Herzog and de Meuron, I might be in total awe. However, this set just does not do it for me.
As I said, if it happens to catch on with predominantly football fans then TLG might score big time, if not, then they will score one in their own goal. In the latter case, a loss they can suffer, and a lesson for the future.

By in Germany,

I think it looks good! And like a fun build! And I really like football

Having said that, it's the wrong team :) Well, indeed it is, I don't really like ManU, but I think I could ignore that. However, I can't ignore the price I'm afraid. I don't necessarily believe it's too expensive for the piece count, but it's too expensive in absolute terms to justify buying given how much unbuilt stuff I have lying around and what other sets I'd rather buy. So, I'll pass, at least for the foreseeable future.

My point is that I don't think one must be interested in either MU or football itself to appreciate this set. No problem if you don't, not trying to convince you otherwise. I just think the focus in this forum is too much on the set being football and MU, and forgetting that it also a nice detailed building. I agree that it is unlikely to be on most people's priority list given the amount of large sets that are more appealing for the average AFOL, but I like that Lego is doing something that has not been done before. They can cut their losses, but I hope they will keep exploring new niches.

By the way I am with you on the point that I would also value higher a historical monument in such detail, for example I would love a huge, 6000 piece Schloss Neuschwanstein.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If it was classic (pre-2003) Wembley, and about 1/3rd of the price I'd be tempted. Or St James' Park. THEN I'd be tempted.

As it stands, nope. Can't see this being a big seller in the UK, or N America either. Asia, maybe?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

@inversion

A huge, 6000 piece Schloss Neuschwanstein: now we are talking!

Gravatar

(spending too much on LEGO anyway so great news I can give this one a skip!)

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

Why can't we have a big field for minifigures to play real football? Although I have to admit, this set looks really cool

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It looks great, but a strange choice of set to release. It's ultimately a display set, but it's hard to see too many people other than Man. Utd. fans wanting to display it, and when you also factor in the cost the potential market shrinks even more.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks neat, but will it sell outside the UK?

Gravatar
By in Cook Islands,

Not a soccer fan, and don't exactly have over $300 to drop on such a niche set. I will however be interested in the reviews and will probably download the instructions once they're online and build it in studio to check out the technical side of the build

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hard pass. Also weird its Creator Expert and not Architecture.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Over priced tat, just like most of Man Ure's recent signings.

It's an easy pass for me, since I can't stand Man Ure.

Gravatar
By in United States,

$300, zilch play value, and limited audience--yeah, this is gonna be a flop.

That being said, even with me not being a soccer fan, I really like this set. At least it ain't Trolls! It also makes me wonder what sets could be done in an Architecture scale at this size. And this time, with a more general audience. I answered "No, it doesn't interest me" and was surprised at how that seems to be the majority opinion with this set. Heck, I think if LEGO made a NASCAR range like MEGA did when I was growing up, I doubt a single set would sell worse than this one.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

As someone who has zero interest in Soccer (and even less in UK Soccer) this is going to be a pass for me (especially with the $450 RRP in Australia)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love the idea of a full stadium, don’t love that price or that it’s not minifigure scale

Gravatar
By in Australia,

It is a great set, but as an Aussie it isn't really my sport; even though as a child I used to stay up late to watch it with my father who was European/Dutch.

Great set for the fans though !

@vader11 - suspect there are more fans of soccer than grid iron.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I don’t really support Man Utd or even soccer or sport in general. However I do like the detail put in and I might get it, but given the high price for some sport merch as well as the lack of minifigures and over abundance of stickers, it might make me shy away from it.

I also wonder how well this will go outside the UK. In Australia, I’d imagine an MCG would sell like hotcakes but not this.

I am a huge Arsenal fan, but an even bigger football fan, so this is tempting. Even though I don't like United at all, you got to appreciate the history of the Old Trafford.

I dont think there will be any more football stadiums, but as a big football fan, I Hope there will be. Camp Nou and San Siro would be nice.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Having been a (Stretford End) season-ticket holder at Old Trafford I can just imagine the scene in the Megastore for every home game; they'll wheel in a new palette of boxes every 30 minutes and the vast majority of them will fly home afterwards (United have a fair proportion of overseas visitors for home matches)

This will sell - at the stadium itself... I would have found it hard not to have bought it to commemorate my son's first visit to the stadium had it been available then...

Oh heck! What if Lego were to get the shirt sponsorship deal at United?!?!? :-D

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

That is one repetetive build...
Simple and easy pass.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Not an United fan, but I love the sport, and I must say this set looks amazing. Only find it weird to be released under the Creator theme, instead of Architecture. Would be much more appropriate. Also, based on the moment of the English football, it would be better to choose Anfield... But well, it's okay.

Lots of people criticizing saying it is too niche and all, but seriously, AFOLs lately are considering anything LEGO makes as "too niche" or "I don't know about it so I won't buy it". It's 2020. Looks like people still wait for the return of the "Town/Castle/Space/Pirates/Technic ONLY" era...

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in Australia,

It's a nice set, but looking at it, all I can think is, all those stickers would be a pain to apply.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm a Manchester United & as nice as this looks its bloody expensive, just do a minifig series & I,ll buy them instead,

Other stadiums I would be interested in seeing are: The Santiago Bernabeau, San Siro, Wembley & The Maracana maybe the Allianz Arena!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a big no for me. Not into Soccer & I have no desire to build any sports stadium. My money will be spent on other sets. Might be worth it when they reduce it 50-70% off solely for the parts. It is a very interesting looking build minus all the dratted stickers.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's actually a pretty good model, and the designer needs to be congratulated - but I could never buy it due to tribal football loyalties (I'd buy St James' Park, though!).

It's obviously aimed at the Far East market where sales will be much higher - Man U has a huge following out there.

I predict it'll gather dust on Lego Store shelves pretty much everywhere in the UK, due to said tribal football loyalties. Except for London and the South East, obviously, as that's where most British Man U supporters live!! :-)

Very interesting licence, though. What next???

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I think this is a missed opportunity for a new theme. By releasing it as a large Creator Expert set, they're doing nobody any favours. The set's only going to appeal to an ever-decreasing subset of potential buyers - football fans, Man U fans, with fat wallets. It won't sell in large enough quantities to justify further entries at this scale.

BUT ... if they'd released it as something similar to Architecture - and, crucially, announced that it IS the start of a series - then I'd see more people outside the subsets buying it. I may be a Liverpool fan through and through, but even I'd look at buying this if I knew that others were on the way.

They needn't make it English football exclusively. Why not a Stadiums Of The World series? This one, Anfield, Wembley, Stade de France, Bernabeu, San Siro ... and other worldwide football stadia. Olympic venues. Then baseball and American Rugby ;-)

A lot of potential, but they've instead sold their souls to the (Red) Devils licencing department, for a product that won't sell.

EDIT: Would I buy Anfield at this big scale. Hell YES!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

99% of the people that buy this will have never been to Old Trafford for real...

I like it though. Shame the price is too high. If they had done this smaller and cheaper, I'd imagine football fans around the world would have liked to collect the greatest stadiums of the world as a theme. I still think Lego is missing a trick by not releasing football teams. Imagine the sales if every premier league team was represented in Lego. Given the nature of football transfers and kit upgrades it would be an evergreen theme for Lego with huge global sales.

Wow lots of hate to this set but not surprised!!! I mean it’s so niche. Who’s gonna get this? I’d only buy when it sells for $150, and then only a maybe. Really interested to see how long this one lasts. Will be a riot if this is the biggest flop since Galidor.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I think it probably should've been an architecture set

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nice model, a brave move to make a set with such a niche market. I imagine they won't produce the usual amount of sets and I think it will not sell well.
Will probably end up being heavenly discounted and seliing in low numbers. Then it will become rare lol, and worth more further down the line.

Gravatar
By in Hong Kong,

I have little interest in football, and won't be buying it, BUT I think this is a really nice set. Looks nicely detailed and a more interesting build than many of the architecture sets. I also think this will sell really well - as others have said above, football in general and Man U in particular are extremely popular in Asia.
I suspect that this is launched as a one off because of licensing complications - each team (and probably the stadium owners / naming license holders) will need to be licensed separately. If it sells well, other teams might want to participate, but it makes sense for Lego to launch with one well known team first rather than try to negotiate with everyone simultaneously.

Actually, just that is going to come out this year. Not from TLG mind you, but made from compatible bricks by a German company I am not allowed to mention here. PM me if you need the link to the website. (Actually, they state it will be more than 7,400 pieces!)

Well if nothing else, I'm pleased to see the triangular tile in a green shade. That piece has quickly become one of my new favorites that Lego has made in recent years.

Also, those large (printed?) tiles will make a great soccer field.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Not that every single LEGO set has to have the most broad appeal, but this is so extremely narrow that it's just utterly baffling why it's being made. Considering how fiercely loyal football fans are, it's not like die-hard Barcelona fans are going to want this just because it's football-themed. The size and price will scare off a lot of casually-interested people too.

Prediction: Least-selling set of 2020.

"I'm amazed they're making this. It's so niche."

1.5 billion estimated fans isn't really niche . . .

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't necessarily think this is particularly niche.

It's niche for the "average" afol but not for wider consumers.

Manchester United's fan base is hugely overestimated but they do sell around 3 million shirts each season.

I would suggest that limits this set's appeal to those 3 million people. They have more than 3 million fans but only 3 million are willing to spend money on their football shirt.

Football is a working class game. How many of those 3 million, who already buy shirts, season tickets, sports subscriptions etc can afford an extra £250 for this set?

However, I can totally see fans of Manchester United buying their kids this set for christmas.

I'd guess that even 1% of the 3 million fans that would desire this set would make it a success. I'm not sure what Lego counts as a successful product but 30,000 sales of a £250 set seems pretty healthy to me.

The biggest obstacle to sales however is Manchester United's poor performance over recent years. Fans are mostly fans for life but even still, it's easier to spend money on a successful team than an incredibly frustrating team.

Lastly, TLG has never had any issue with niche markets. Look at all the exclusives they produce, none more so than the comic con exclusives. Sure, there's a broad desire for the product but an incredibly niche consumer profile. "We're going to produce sets and minifigures that can only be purchased by someone who likes Lego, lives in the city that comic con is hosted at and wins a raffle"

*on a side note, do you think we could convince TLG that producing comic-con exclusives encourages people to fly from their own countries to visit comic-con to purchase these sets and in doing so is damaging the planet and the only responsible thing to do is make these sets widely available for purchase? :P

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Doesn't matter that this is "niche". Not every Lego product has to appeal to every Lego buyer - that's kind of why they have different themes.

It's not as niche as some people would like it to be - United's fan base is huge, and exists in many territories.

How much of a crossover is there between United's fan base and Lego buyers (with significant spending money)? Who knows. But it's a mistake to think that it will only sell to that cross-section. Some United fans may well purchase this as their first Lego set. That's a rather important part of all this - the possibility to bring other people into the Lego family.

Plus, some people who are just football fans in general - but not United - may buy the set. It's a stadium with significant importance.

And if you don't like United, it shouldn't take too many additional bricks to remove the branded elements, and even swap the colour scheme, so that you have a football stadium that whilst looking like Old Trafford doesn't display as such.

We've seen real buildings in the Creator Expert range (Sydney Opera House, Taj Mahal, etc.) so it's not so surprising that it isn't an Architecture set. Although coming in a black box, and hopefully the instructions contain some detail of stadium, in which case it will feel more like an Architecture set anyway.

As far as I can see, the biggest mistakes that Lego have made are possibly not thinking more about how it could fit into a Creator Expert display. And missing the Christmas market - at this price, tapping into the market of people buying gifts for United fans ought to be important.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

This will be great for the, like, 100 people who are LEGO fans AND fans of a very specific British team.

I, despite being European, hate football.
And if I were to buy a LEGO Stadium, I would only buy the one from the team I kinda sorta support (when you live in Portugal, society doesn't really allow you to not have a football team even if you hate the sport and couldn't care less for it). And Manchester United isn't it.

So...I guess thank you LEGO for making me NOT spend money! :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

While I don't care about association football at all, it'll be interesting to see if Lego builds more stadiums of cherished franchises. AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys, would be a strong choice, as would Yankee Stadium. Perhaps we may even see E-sports franchises like Evil Geniuses.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The problem with Yankee Stadium is that it was rebuilt. Fenway Park might be a better choice, as it has the history.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Old Yankee Stadium, the House That Ruth Built, would be my choice. They won 26 championships in that stadium. More than Man U

Gravatar

I'm a Pompey fan and it's wishful thinking to think LEGO will ever do Fratton Park! So this may have todo.. it looks absolutely incredible!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is awesome! I love soccer (futbol). I am not really a fan of Manchester United, but this is a great Lego set. It would be awesome if Lego made more stadiums of different teams. Lego should try to acquire the UEFA Champions League license so they could make awesome minifigures like Messi, Ronaldo, Lewandowski, and many more! I'd be all in!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's pretty impressive even if I have no interest in ManU or soccer stadiums. My most proud LEGO creation as a kid was a similar scale model of the old Cleveland Stadium, so the idea is really cool to me. I'd love to see other US stadiums offered in the future.

Looking at pics taken from behind the goal of the real stadium, I would say that the goals look reasonably well proportioned in relation to the pitch markings. It's the stadium that is a little bit out of proportion with the pitch - but at this scale, that's OK. There are always going to be compromises matching up a real world building to a set of fixed plastic brick sizes. Overall, it is instantly recognisable and a good representation of the real thing.
