Today, the 3rd Saturday in September, is Batman Day, so it's the perfect time for LEGO to reveal the latest Batman set:

76161 1989 Batwing, 2,363 pieces
£179.99, €199.99, $199.99
VIP early release 21st October, general release 1st November

[19 September 2020] It may not soar to Gotham city, but the LEGO Group’s latest release with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC, the LEGO DC BATMAN 1989 Batwing, is sure to transport fans to their most memorable DC Super Hero moments this Batman Day. Fans of Batman and avid builders are in for some serious fun as they embark on their journey to construct the ultimate Super Hero vehicle in the LEGO DC BATMAN collection.

The new LEGO 1989 Batwing draws upon the design seen in Tim Burton’s iconic 1989 BATMAN film, using the smooth lines and features from the original model to bring an impressive gothic elegance to any LEGO collection. DC and LEGO fans alike can indulge in their passion for the Caped Crusader as they explore all the delightful features of this new set, including a full interior, removable canopy and poseable aerodynamic flaps. To add to the excitement, the construction kit is also dotted with Easter eggs to surprise builders, such as a screen featuring The Joker’s gas balloons and a ‘Bat Engine’ label on the vehicle’s engine – helping to truly transport builders back to 1989 and into the BATMAN universe.

Once completed, the 2,363-piece set is a real showstopper, measuring over 4” (11cm) high, 20” (52cm) long and 22” (58cm) wide. The construction set also features a special brick which allows builders to mount and display their model on the wall for added impact, making the LEGO DC BATMAN 1989 set a wonderful addition to a Batman lover’s LEGO collection, joining the previously released LEGO DC BATMAN 1989 Batmobile to make a dark and dramatic display in any home.

Speaking about the details of the new set, LEGO Creative lead Jesper C. Nielsen said: The emblematic set truly takes fans on a journey, as they immerse themselves into Gotham city and get hands-on with the set, using Batman, The Joker and Boombox goon minifigures to relive their favourite moments from the film. Fans can even create the infamous scene when The Joker barges in on the Dark Knight and utters his classic words “have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?”.

The new LEGO 1989 Batwing construction set is the latest example of how the LEGO Group aims to inspire builders of all ages to build, rebuild and get excited by the process of creation. A complex and rewarding build, the LEGO 1989 Batwing construction set allows builders to relax as they escape from the real world and enter the Batman universe. Designed for those aged 18+, the new set will also feature the new stylish packaging designed to reflect the sophisticated nature of the creative process.

All new products in the LEGO Group’s ranges that appeal to adults will now feature the sleek, minimalistic new design across related packaging, building instructions, exclusive content and in-store and online store design.

You'll find more images on the set details page.

By in United States,

I literally just came here to tip you on it. I was looking at the LEGO website, and suddenly it was here.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Beautiful, bigger than expected. They've achieved very well the rounded shaped this time!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Amazing and great but just not my thing.

The figures look nice, i don't actually know two of them but they look cool. The build itself will probably go perfectly next to last years Batmobile which was also impressive, I'm interested to see how they rounded off the wings reasonably smoothly. The price for what you get is quite reasonable too.

Overall great set, just not for me.

By in United Kingdom,

Love that Joker!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ooooooh love it! X Just too many high price sets this year - have to hope they all stay on sale long enough to be able to buy them all xx

Gravatar
By in United States,

Where does he get those wonderful toys!?!?

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Amazing set, day 1 purchase for sure! Hopefully there'll be a minifig-scale Batwing GWP with it, but I hope there'll be more stock this time…

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Interesting to see the joker has his quill... the same one he throws at someone’s throat causing them to die... “the pen is mightier then the sword”...
They should have included a pencil for the heath ledger joker from the tumbler too!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

No balloon clippers?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Tch. Should have included Bob, as he is the number one guy.

Great model though! ^^

Gravatar
By in United States,

So THATS where he gets those wonderful toys!

I think my LEGO collecting habits will eventually break me financially...but at least I’ll die happy.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not my thing personally but undeniably very nicely done - those outer curves in particular, really interested to dig into the instructions and see how those are built up.

Also really nice to see the Art wallclips popping up again to wall-mount it - hopefully they become even more commonplace!

“Gentlemen, lets broaden our minds, Laurence”
They actually made a minifigure of Laurence, that’s glorious

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

Wow, the design of the set and the minifigures are impressive!

I hope we see more sets like this one in the future!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not at all a bad price either

Gravatar
By in Australia,

another great design! Lets hope they continue with the Batman D2C vehicle sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Spec-flipping-tacular!

UCS Gotham Cathedral next please. :-D

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I like it ... but it's too big and expensive for me. I skipped out on the '89 Batmobile for that same reason.

I'd rather minifig scale versions of these guys. We got a minifig scale version of the Batmobile as the gift-with-purchase that accompanied the larger version. As for the Batwing, Lego already released one of these (in a set with Shazam, the Riddler's helicopter and Commissioner Gordon) and that is as close to the '89 Batwing as you're likely to get, so, all's well that ends well.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Hopefully it comes with a smaller Batwing for gift with purchase

Good music by Prince too.

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

Really cool set, unfortunately too expensive for me. Also, where can I see the new brick that connects to the wall?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Weird choice to include Lawrence from the museum scene and not Bob the Goon. Or even Alexander Knox. Still, nice set. I might have to grab this and the Batmobile together for Xmas.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The shape is great and the figures are cool, but I’m just not feeling it. Now, a batwing GWP as nice as the Batmobile GWP would give me a conundrum.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

So basically a lot of black bricks forming a bat shape for $200. I’ll pass on this one

Gravatar
By in United States,

Easy pass. I still haven't gotten around to getting the Batmobile. Too many large, expensive sets too fast means there are sets like this I won't even consider.

The movie batwing had a wingspan of 35'. This Lego version has a wingspan of 87' (if a minifig is 6' tall).

It doesn't need to be this large.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Happy Batman Day. It's a beautiful model but I don't have $200.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wish there were a new Batman figure. It would look weird to have this stand next to the other one, as the both have the same fig.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks great, but I’m glad I’m not a Batman fan. That would just be too much dusting. Now I’m just waiting for one more D2C reveal...

This list needs a new option for "I hope so, if I can afford it"

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's nice, but probably not for me. An 18+ 60s Batmobile would be a must-have though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Another big expensive set.... very nice, but every set I want at the minute is between £180-320! Let’s have some £40-80 AFOL sets please!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@guachi - this set isn’t minifig scale though. The minifigs are just an additional piece to accompany the set, like with the UCS Snowspeeder, etc.

@Mr_Cross - start saving those pennies up. I bet they’ll do an Adam West batmobile eventually.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe we’re trying to keep the poll positive, but it seems to lack a “I don’t like it” option. I don’t mean “it doesn’t interest me.” Maybe that’s what most people mean when they select that. I mean, I loved that movie but this is really rough to me. I’d love to buy a batwing, this just isn’t it at all.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Enough with this escapist therapy marketing. It's repetitive and depressing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes, as soon as it's released... IF there's a Batwing GWP like the 1989 Batmobile.

That promotional item was gone in less than a day. As we've seen with Yoda's lightsaber and the Hagrid/Buckbeak BrickHeadz, if there is a GWP you want tied to a set you intend to buy at some point, "as soon as it's released" is the only option.

I am very interested to see the incorporation of the "special brick" to allow for wall mounting. I assume it is the same used for LEGO Art.

Agree. Needs a ‘maybe’ option

By in Germany,

Lego tries to seggregate its customers into afols who buy big expensive sets and parents and kids, which buy the new juniorized sets. But lego does not see that many afols do not like and do not buy those exaggerated mega sets. But want nice playsets, which can be build in a reasonable few minutes and have appealing figures. It is not my collecting habit to buy 3 big sets, spending hundreds of dollars a year. I want interesting little sets, to spend my dollars evenly through out the year.

Totally! Why is it "fancy Joker" and Laurence instead of Bob and Alfred?

Apart from that minor quibble, fantastic set! Not quite as iconic as the Batmobile as it doesn't have nearly the same screen time, but great set nonetheless, and not a bad price at all for the size. When is Lego and Ikea going to come out with a shelving solution so we can store all of these killer sets?! :D

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Next question. Will we get a mini version when we buy this ?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a great model, probably the best possible version of the 1989 Batwing at this price point. It's shaped well, sturdy, has a great PPP (much better than the UCS Star Wars sets), and will go very well with the Batmobile. But I must admit, it just doesn't have quite the same WOW factor that the Batmobile does. That set is the largest brick-built automobile that Lego has ever done, and not only does it have all sorts of incredible building techniques to achieve the shape, it also has amazing technical functions like the virtual pivot steering that's linked to the cockpit, the pop-up machine guns linked to the exhaust cone, the lifting/sliding cockpit canopy, and the big old turntable to hold the entire thing, AND if you bought it on release day it came with a minifig-scale version that could have sold for $30 or $40 on its own. This set is just a big swooshy without any functions ... a skillfully built swooshy at a much better PPP than comparable Star Wars swooshies, but still just a big swooshy.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Would love Minifigures of the other Burton villains, Penguin, Catwoman and Max Shreck. Can’t really think of a vehicle set they’d be suited for though, other than a UCS giant rubber-duck-boat-tank thing from the end of Batman Returns...

If you wind up with two, you could always sell one of them at a very reasonable price to someone called Zander.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Stunning.
I just recently completed the 76139 Batmobile, which surprised me as it has turned out to be among my top 5 favourite sets, just a stunning set.
If this set, is anywhere near as good, it will be an incredible addition.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Great set, but the real cost of this set is the extra house I would have to buy, or at least the addition I would have to build, to hold all the LEGO sets that I would like to buy, because I have no more room to display or store.

Ten years ago I would have jumped all over this set, and the Batmobile last year, but given all the D2C big sets LEGO is now releasing, I have to be way more selective, and this set won't meet the cut. The main reason to buy these sets is if you plan to display them, and I just have no more room.

Still, by all means, let LEGO make tons of these sets. I only have to buy the ones I want/can afford. Nothing wrong with having lots of choice.

I also love that they included the boom box

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

The Batmobile may have been my favourite build in years, but I’m not getting this. It’s cool and well executed and all, but this is more of the “big set burn out” I’ve commented on before.

Odd minifigs though. I understand they’ve to get use out of the 89 cowl and you do need Batman, but at least give us a beaten up variant. Which would tie up well with the Batwing. Otherwise why not Alfred, Bob, Gordon, Grisham or Knox?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Batwing looks great! I'm happy with the Mime Joker, but Bob The Goon would've been a better choice. Laurence was dressed like a mime when the Joker appeared in this costume, and that particular scene has nothing to do with the Batwing.

The loose placard seems odd. I now see that the Batwing can be wall mounted, but it seems strange that it doesn't appear to be attached to the stand with any studs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks like a very impressive model, will probably get it eventually but may end up paying more because it's no guarantee that I can get a lot of $200+ USD sets before they retire. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yet another must buy for me, is it dangerous to assume they will ever slow down with these big awesome releases?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I just need the henchman!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This brought a smile to my face when I saw it on Instagram... Its a masterpiece, iconic and it can be wall mounted too!!
Also love the Well overdue variant of The joker and his Henchman but I wish lego would of made Bob too...

Well done lego please make the animated series batmobile now:

100,000% getting this October 21st. I will fight my way into the LEGO store if need be

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like it enough to buy it minute one! Buuuuut I was hoping and would have preferred if they would start a Batmobile UCS line!!!! After the 1989 one last year, and the 76023 Tumbler they are almost on the way. There are loads of possibilities that could go for years, imagine classic TV Batmobile UCS styleeee!!

Gravatar

I'm about to move to a new place so finances are tight but I've already convinced the wife this gets a place on the wall. I just hope it's in the same scale as the Batmobile I've bought last year.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I think that this set looks totally inaccurate one thing the Gatling guns should be able to be retracted into the sides of it secondly what are those grey things on the wings those are not in the source material it's too flat and needs to be rounded up more more bubbly

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As much as I like the goon with the boom box. I wish they would of done Jokers right hand man Bob the goon.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Oh yes! I definitely need this. I have skipped most (if not all) of the other big releases over the last months, but this one is probably a 'day one' for me. Also depending on GWP maybe

Gravatar
By in United States,

As someone who wasn't a big fan of last years Batmobile, I can't wait to get this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the images in the set details page shows the Batwing being partially constructed. Looks like a red crowbar is included. Interesting. A wedge plate is removed and it looks like underneath there is a white rubber band. Are rubber bands employed to create a curved shape?

Gravatar
By in France,

Looking at the box artwork either this model is huge or Lego found a really small couch to put next to it

Gravatar
By in United States,

Seems like there are exceptionally many large sets this year...anyway the batwing will never match the batmobile in popularity in general. Easy pass for something like this that cost $200.

Gravatar
By in France,

I like so much the profile of this version of the Batwing. And this new big set is a big surprise and looks great ! Displayed next to 1989 Batmobile and you have a delight to the eyes. Lego really wants our AFOL wallets to cry out for a bit of rest these days.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Holy Batwing, Batman.

This set was immediately presented to my wife. Eyes were rolled. Yet purchase was approved.

It will be displayed together with 7784, 76023 and 5004590. I messed up getting 76139 somehow.

I just hope there will be a Batwing GWP.

I want it for the "special brick which allows builders to mount and display their model on the wall". I'm almost out of shelf space in my Lego room but I've got plenty of walls! Imagine the possibilities! I'd start with my Star Wars ships mounted "in attack formation"; not sure about the Falcon though - too heavy perhaps? Does anyone have any details on this new "brick"?

It's clearly not minifigure scaled.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A major bummer that Joker didn't come with a mega-long-barreled pistol (which is needed with the minifig version that came with the Batmobile).

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Minifig290:
They didn't. They just added an edge that overlaps the wing surface. It appears to be comprised of sections of 45 degree slopes that are linked together with hinge plates, spaced so that each section presses against the more faceted edge of the main wing surface.

@fulcrumbop:
Bed, Bat, and Beyond.

@Slobrojoe:
The soundtrack is a large part of the reason that the only movie I'll still watch out of that quartet is Batman Returns.

@Darth_Studhilus:
I bet you a dollar tile it's the same piece they use to hang the new Mosaic kits.

@morvit:
Ah, but it's a curious piece of Bat-history. Prior to 1989, Batman's planes had a more traditional plane-like shape, with long, straight wings, and a tail that extends backwards with horizontal and vertical stabilizers. This was the first instance I know of where the Batplane became the Batwing, shaped like a bat emblem. It's also the first time I know of that someone decided to turn Batman into the Batsignal by way of silhouetting him against the full moon, which is a trick that got repeated in the direct-to-DVD LEGO Batman movies when Superman bodily tosses Batman up, and his cape billows out to form the batwings just before he falls back down.

@guachi:
To be minifig scale, neither did the UCS Tumbler or the UCS 1989 Batmobile. But they weren't minifig scale either. This looks to be closer to Technic scale, and the minifigs are only there because they help sell the sets, and they haven't found a better reason to include them elsewhere.

@meclo:
The film was Batman vs Joker, and there's no guarantee that someone who buys this set has the recent Batmobile to pair with it. The third spot should have been either Alfred or Gordon, as Michael Gough and Pat Hingle are the only two cast members who suffered through to the end.

@Kokiri_Forester:
For Batman Returns, they have a few options. They could do the Batmissile, in its compact form without the ejected sides. They could do the armored Batmobile (though _that_ would be a fairly boring build). There's the Batskiboat that he uses to go through the sewer tunnels. And yes, there's the giant yellow ducky car/boat that Penguin drives around in.

Sort of. The batgyro, Batman’s earliest aircraft, that first appeared in 1939 had a stylised bat silhouette. It wasn’t the same as Batman’s emblem - then or now - but was bat-shaped.

You can see it fairly clearly in the images of the set details. It is the same piece used for the LEGO Mosaic art.

"Why didn't somebody tell me he had one of those... things?"-Joker (Batman 1989)

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but: Bob the Goon would have been the better/more logical/more suitable figure, given the context where the vehicle appears in the movie (even/especially w/the completion of the 'full quote' that I used). I'm not even of Bob could even be used if they made say; Joker's helicopter, as I don't think Bob was the pilot...

Too bad Lego is so 'vehicle centric', that they could make something like say: a Batman 'gallery battle playset' sans a Batmobile...just a thought/wish.

I disagree. Personally I'm only interested in large sets to display (SW, Technic, anything else that looks interesting). I don't want to play with them. These sets are perfect for AFOLs. If you want play sets there's hundreds of them available each year. Releasing so many large sets in such a short time only proves that there's huge worldwide AFOL community with enough disposable income to buy enough of them to keep Lego profitable. Hopefully Lego will one day start selling sets the size of 10,000+ parts for those who want extreme details so we don't have to buy MOC instructions and then spend thousands of dollars acquiring bricks.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Okay, I just have to ask. How come there's a "Batman day", and what determined that date?

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

At this rate, by early 2021 LEGO will be announcing a new $200+ deluxe collector's set every single week of the year.

I think the weirdest thing for me is how I'm already forgetting about other deluxe sets they've already released this year. Anyone remember that Haunted House set? The Fiat 500? Or even the Grand Piano? These type of sets used to be memorable because there weren't that many of them in any given year, but now they're just dime a dozen, about as memorable as a City set.

As for the set at hand, it feels oddly unsuitable at this size. Like it's just a bit too chunky. Maybe the wings were that thick on the "real" thing too, but I dunno. Not hugely impressive for a 2,000+ piece set.

Thanks, ya I looked it up...which leads to more questions...

I'm guessing those are made to hang on a nail or a flat head screw? Is that right?

Eh. Nowhere near as good as the Batmobile, and I was hoping for a Harvey Dent.

Can we get another Tumbler please? Maybe with a more accurate Heath Ledger Joker and Two-Face?

Anyone else kinda tired of batman? We need stuff for any other DC hero.

Looks cool, but I'm still holding out hope for TV show bat mobile in this format.

"Amazing and great but just not my thing.

The figures look nice, i don't actually know two of them but they look cool. The build itself will probably go perfectly next to last years Batmobile which was also impressive, I'm interested to see how they rounded off the wings reasonably smoothly. The price for what you get is quite reasonable too.

Overall great set, just not for me."

What? How can you not know two of them? LOL

Partyman! :) Gentlemen, lets broaden our minds. Lawrence

Having a closer and more attentive look at it, this hood-cape part with the bat symbol on it is really remarkable. Excellent mold. Excellent shapes. The print for Batman belt buckle is quite nice too.

"Okay, I just have to ask. How come there's a "Batman day", and what determined that date?"

The first official Batman Day was July 23rd, 2014, at SDCC.
They (DC Comics) commemorated the 75th anniversary of Batman's debut and put out special anniversary comics (for example a New 52 Detective Comics 27 - debut issue number for Batman), merch, toys, etc.
Then the next year they did another big promo event in Sept. and comic book stores took part, featuring artists and writers doing signings, sketches, etc. The Sept. date promotion was set for alot of new special edition Batman books coming out that week.
I did one last year and did an exclusive print for a store. It helps bring in customers to the shops. It was Batman's 80th anniversary.

@TheLegoFan:
Batman and DC in general is off-limits for Ideas because it's an active theme.

@BionicleJedi:
Batman's the most popular superhero across any brand. The first Batman Day was July 23, 2014, to coincide (in a very weird way) with the 75th anniversary of Batman's debut. Though that took place in May rather than July, this date happened to be Wednesday, when new comic books are shelved, and the specific day that the New 52 run (which reset the issue numbers for every title back to 1) released Detective Comics 27, which is the issue that Batman debuted in from the original run. It also happened to be the date for preview night at SDCC. In subsequent years, it has always taken place in mid-September, with the following dates:

2015 – September 26
2016 – September 17
2017 – September 23
2018 – September 15
2019 – September 21
2020 — September 19

Wikipedia claims the date is now set as the third Saturday of September, but in 2015 and 2017 it was the fourth Saturday. Best guess is they pick a Saturday around that timeframe to honor the third guy to play Batman, since his birthday is September 19th. Given that his show practically tanked the character until the mid-80's, and he actively campaigned to get all funding pulled for the 1989 Batman movie (and succeeded until Burton and WB sent around a demo reel to revive confidence in his vision for the new film), I'm rather mystified as to why they perpetuate the fallacy that he was the first Batman. Given how much of a jerk he's been to his fans (his much-publicized appearance at the 2014 SDCC LEGO booth reportedly consisted of nothing more than walking past the area and waving his hand), I'm equally confused as to why so many people rush to honor him.

The wall mounting is interesting as save space as a very big model. I like the cockpit canopy, nice use of the half round cylinder and the designers seemed to have had fun doing the curvature of the wings. I assume the size is so that it is at roughly the same scale as the UCS batmobile, so the two can be displayed together?

The poll answer I almost always want to choose (but can't since it's not provided) is:
"Ask me again after the Brickset review is posted."

Admittedly, in this case I don't have to dither; I actually have no desire for UCS Batman sets. Given how much I'm likely to spend on the Diagon Alley and Mos Eisley Cantina sets, that's a good thing!

Beautiful, but it seems they didn't respect actual proportions. Wings should have been larger.

Clearly not a Batman fan eh? You could say something similar about LOTS of sets for Pete's sake.

The big guy with the handlebar stache and the stereo was certainly the most unique looking of the Joker's goons, but wouldn't Bob have been the more appropriate goon to have in minifig form? I mean he was clearly the Joker's second in command and actually had some lines in the movie...

Actually, I think you'll find, it's very very dark grey.

By in United States,

I’m a bit torn about this. ‘89 Batmobile was a great build + design, but it’s honestly one of the very few times I’ve been somewhat disappointed at my decision to buy in the end — despite being a huge fan of Batman. Reasons being: Too large and awkward to display (all black gets lost to the environment, difficult to display in the first place); already had/have tons of black & gray (many from other Bat-sets), so re-use value for MOCs is limited as well. No regrets whatsoever on the figures, however; they were excellent, and really as big a draw as the model itself.

For the Batwing, some of the display-ability issues can be addressed by it being wall-mountable or hung from the ceiling. The design is again fantastic. But the figure selection is wildly sub-par compared to the Batmobile figs. It’s cool to have a goon, but not when ‘89 Alfred is yet to be seen — or better yet, a jeans-&-turtleneck Michael Keeton Bruce Wayne! Major missed opportunity on that one, and given the other factors mentioned, it’s probably enough to steer me away from buying this time around.

Also, I agree with other comments on the Joker variant chosen for this. It’s a great fig, but has nothing to do with the scene. The ridiculous long-barrel revolver Joker uses in that scene is the thing everyone remembers — probably as much or more than the actual Batwing. But of course, they’d have to re-use the same Joker costume here to include it.

So it sort of feels like they’re painted into a corner a bit...which ultimately results in the set feeling disjointed. I also think that, because of the popularity of the character, there’s this felt need to include Joker in every one of these sets, even if it makes no sense. I mean, if you’re gonna use a costume incongruous with the scene anyway, why not just drop in Catwoman or Penguin from Returns?

Obviously, the best solution of all would’ve been a Prince minifig in Bat-Dance wardrobe :) ...That would make for a day-one purchase for sure, all regardless of anything else.
