Sesame Street: The next LEGO Ideas set revealed

Posted by ,

It's been over a year since LEGO announced, at the end of September 2019, that bulldoozer's Sesame Street Ideas project had passed review. Now, finally, it's been revealed, and will be available from 1st November. Here's the press release:

21324 123 Sesame Street, 1367 pieces
£109.99, $119.99, €119.99
Age rating 18+

STEP UP TO THE BRAND-NEW LEGO IDEAS 123 SESAME STREET

Imagined by a keen LEGO builder and seasoned Sesame Street fan, the first-ever Sesame Street product from the LEGO Group will be available from 1st November from LEGO.com and LEGO Stores.

Voted for by LEGO brick lovers all over the world, a wonderfully nostalgic new LEGO Ideas set has been brought to life after being envisioned by an avid builder. The brand-new LEGO Ideas 123 Sesame Street set is the latest product from the LEGO Ideas collection, which conceptualises and produces the creative wonders imagined and voted for by LEGO brick fans themselves.

Created with all the delightful elements of 123 Sesame Street, the new set is packed with authentic details from the famous New York City neighbourhood. From Bert and Ernie’s apartment, in which Bert famously pleaded with Ernie to remove a banana from his ear so he could hear better, to Big Bird’s nest, where the grown-ups finally met Mr. Snuffleupagus in person - builders will marvel in Sesame Street’s most memorable moments.

As they embark on their immersive build journey of LEGO Ideas 123 Sesame Street, seasoned LEGO fans and younger builders alike can take a trip down memory lane, passing by Hooper’s Store, Oscar the Grouch’s trash can, and many more quintessential Sesame Street locations, making it the perfect set to enjoy on your own or together as a family. Fans can even bring their favourite characters and show moments to life with the brand new and exclusive buildable minifigures which have been moulded specifically for the set, including characters such as Cookie Monster, Elmo and Big Bird.

The new LEGO Ideas 123 Sesame Street set is part of the LEGO Ideas collection, which offers fans the opportunity to submit their own brick creations with the chance to have their concept brought to life with the help of LEGO master designers and a share of the profits. Other recent LEGO Ideas sets inspired by LEGO fans, include the LEGO Ideas Grand Piano and the LEGO Ideas Friends Central Perk.

Created by Sesame Street fan and LEGO enthusiast Ivan Guerrero, this set brings together the magic of the iconic New York City street with the mindful and creative building experience of LEGO bricks to create an instant classic.

Speaking about the creative journey, Ivan Guerrero said: “As a long-time fan of the LEGO Group and Sesame Street, it has been a dream come true to be able to merge my two passions into a memorable set for fellow builders to enjoy. LEGO bricks and Sesame Street shaped both my childhood and adult years, and the opportunity to work with the LEGO Ideas team to bring this quintessential New York street to life has been thrilling.”

Federico Begher, VP of Global Marketing at The LEGO Group added: “We were instantly drawn to Ivan’s idea, as we had never created an official LEGO product with Sesame Street before. It was clear from the submission that Ivan is passionate about Sesame Street and he really brought it to life with the wide array of characters and bright, classic colours. For the first time in the history of LEGO Ideas, we also had the opportunity to create brand new minifigures for a set – bringing something new and exciting to our LEGO fans.

Knowing the impact Sesame Street has had on the world for decades, sharing similar values with generations past and present, this felt like an exciting way to blend novelty with nostalgia, and pay homage to the truly iconic 123 Sesame Street through LEGO Ideas.”

“Your imagination and creativity can take you places—and with the help of LEGO Ideas, it’s now transporting fans to Sesame Street where you’re never too old for a playdate,” said Gabriela Arenas, Sesame Workshop’s Vice President of Licensing, North America.

Once built, the 1,367-piece LEGO 123 Sesame Street is sure to bring excitement and nostalgia into any space, measuring 9” (24cm) high, 13.5” (35cm) wide and 8.2” (21cm) deep.

You'll find a full set of images on the set details page.

Whoah, this is really cool! Loved the show as a kid, and this set looks nice.

By in United States,

Given Sesame Street's New York setting, that would look great next to Dr. Strange's Sanctum and the Ghostbusters Firehouse.

(I have no idea what neighborhood Sesame Street was in. I'm guessing northern Manhattan but I'm not sure the show ever established it. Strange's mansion is way south in Greenwich Village.)

By in Ireland,

That looks lovely. Not for me, but I think this is a really nice set!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really well done! They made the original project much more accessible

By in United States,

Dear LEGO,

What was the discussion that led you to think you could successfully market a Sesame Street set as 18+?
Even Friends Central Perk was 16+, but this...this is Sesame Street!

This new 18+ generalization seems really problematic.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wonderfully done. Sure it's a lot smaller than the original submission, but that would have been way too expensive for what may be a 'niche' franchise. They've done well to keep the same vibe and feel at a smaller size.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm just sad they don't have Grover. He was my favorite growing up.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

There's a picture of Abby on the wall. I'm glad.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I dont want to make any assumptions but i guess ppl were awaiting something monumental and as huge as Ghostbusters Firehouse. But tbf i like the idea and size and the fact you do not have to fork out 250 quid... this makes it accessible to much bigger audience. I will be definately buying seeing this price point.

Love the pic of Mr.Hooper on Big Birds wall.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A Sesame Street toy for adult collectors. I wonder how that's going to sell.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So, uh, why is this 18+?

I'm not just asking because it's Sesame Street; it doesn't look to be a complicated set at all, it's literally a playset.

Weird marketing aside, very cool!

By in United Kingdom,

They removed the Count :-(

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's an incredibly simple and yet clever design for a birdhouse on Big Bird's wall.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Interesting to note the two technic pin holes on the open end of the smaller building. Suggests the idea of a second set that fits against it there?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow those minifigs look amazing! Instantly recognizable but still LEGO-like. 4 new molded heads + an absolutely perfect Big Bird!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wish they included the iconic Count, but it looks good!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love the look of this, and I am not even a Sesame Street fan, but will most definitely be buying it at some point. In a year that has appeared to be overflowing with monumental sets, I believe they have struck a brilliant balance between size/price/quality/aesthetic here. Yes, the 18+ designation is confounding. Although I am solely an AFOL, who buys to collect, and my kids are grown, I do think this would be a wonderful theme to explore further in DUPLO so that the young minds captivated by this show can recreate it with their own little hands.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Super disappointed. I loved the original Ideas submission, but this misses the mark for me.

Why strip it down to a facade? It seems like they took what could’ve been a fine addition to the modular building lineup and turned it into a high tier City set (while still being 18+ for some reason).

I would’ve gladly paid a little more to have this on a baseplate as a fully enclosed building.

Or perhaps assumption by TLG that customers will want an instant option of connecting with other sets? Who knows... any option can be considered.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Christmas gift! For me or the kids, who knows? But yes from above^^^, although Big Bird is my favorite, totally missing The Count and Grover! (Although there is the picture of The Count in the apartment over Hooper's Store).

Trying to figure out a Sesame Street / Muppets Collectible Minifigures list...

A tub for the Rubber Ducky song!

And just noticed, one of the newspaper tiles mentions Super Grover...

Agree, it's a shame. I remember seeing both the US and the Latin American version of the show.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Certain omissions make it less appealing. The figures steal the show. The scenery looks decent, but scaled down. And 18+ seems odd considering target audience (although they are banking on nostalgia for this set, so it makes sense).

Oscar needs a molded head also, not a printed round ball. I’m assuming they did that to still have the lid attached. Doesn’t look right though.

Gravatar

And what piece is holding up the blue mailbox. Looks like light blue ski poles?? I didn’t know they fit between studs for clutch.

The minifigures are great, but I like the building substantially less than the submitted version. Unfortunately, this went from a yes to a no thanks to the deviations.

This set is probably cool for people with nostalgia for the show. I actually did watch it when I was young but I didn't really care for it so it definitely doesn't interest me now.

By in Canada,

I certainly hope they have plans to expand on this, unlike other one-and-done Ideas sets Sesame Street has a lot of potential, and yet they still haven't done anything to make more Doctor Who items or Minifigures of characters from such an established line up.

Also, didn't somebody have a leaked image of Count Von Count??? I could have sworn.

If they don't have plans to expand on this I am highly disappointed. To me Sesame Street was never Elmo and his pals, but Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Oscar, The Count, Grover, Telly, Snuffy, The Two-Headed Monster, Dave and many more.

While I appreciate what was done here, and I am going to buy it because I can't NOT own this. And if I support it hopefully it means LEGO might expand on this, even though they never did for Doctor Who or any other set.

But I digress. I have plans to acquire this set. I will build it. But if we never see more of the iconic and faithful Muppet Characters I will be exceptionally disheartened. Give me Guy Smiley and the Yup-Yup Aliens or else. I will be forced to express my displeasure considerably.

Gravatar

Still one of the most emotional episodes in television history.

Honestly, it’s pretty cool to see a really deep episode like that get referenced in a LEGO set

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

It makes complete sense to reduce the massive size of the original Ideas submission, especially the number of characters. The ideas creator (bulldoozer) was great at updating regularly with new figs and Sesame Street history on the Ideas page but the building, and huge volume of minifigs would have cost hundreds. The 18+ on the box just takes the stigma that some adults might see in buying Lego, especally something Sesame Street related. It might help prevent complaints by parents about the complexity if it was bought for a toddler or very young child.
At least this way, Lego can see how the response is from the 4 or 5 generations of people that have grown up with Sesame Street and possibly release more to add to the scene. At this price, it's more likely to sell as an impulse buy for non-Lego people or as a present.
The Ghostbusters Firehouse was huge and pricey since Ghostbusters fans would really have a history of buying expensive, large collector's items. I don't think Sesame Street has the large number of fans that would be willing to invest a huge amount in a collectible.

Anyway, I can't wait for this and hope it's popular enough for more add-ons. I'm hoping for a Grover and especially a Kermit THE Frog, roving reporter.
I can only hope this opens the window for Muppet-based stuff in the future too.

Marvel and DC might be a legitimate criticism, but Star Wars? We’ve seen all 6 Knights of Ren get special molds in the last year, plus Boolio, Baby Yoda, First Order Jet Troopers, and 3 new molds/accessories just for the Mos Eisley Cantina.

Gravatar

Spider-Ham, Captain Marvel, Gold Wonder Woman, '89 Batman, Zorii Bliss, Jannah, the Knights of Ren, Arvel Crynyd, D-O, The Child, and a handful of species from the Cantina. And those are *only* from this year.

Nice, but where is Winnie the Pooh?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely going to pick up this set, brings back a lot of good memories! I do wish we got Super Grover as a figure with a cape and everything, but all the selected figures look fantastic regardless. Although I really do think Oscar would look a lot better with more texture on him.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Just lovely, so many great details! And not too overly massive like so many other 18+ sets. As for that age rating? Well at least this looks like a much more interesting build than Mos Eisley Cantina.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not sure why everyone is surprised that it's labeled as 18+, the show has been running for generations and the vast majority of the biggest fans are obviously 18+. Maybe some kids these days watch Sesame Street, but the passion for these characters doesn't come from them. It comes from everyone else who has been watching for the last 50 years

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like this, I hope they make add ons. Grover, the Count, Yip-Yip Martians, the list goes on.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is one case where, when we have, multiple sets over $200, and in the $300 range, where I wish we had a set that size. Oscar is just a ball! I doubt he is even halfway considerable as being a minifig. 123 Sesame Street itself is small, but Mr. Hooper's store is a joke. Looks like the type of building a $40 set has in it.

I'm likely just gonna Bricklink the minifigs, and some of the parts that represent important props if they're not that expensive. Seriously, that's really the only thing that interests me.

And the real problem is the marketing--it's not an 18+ set. Builds are really simple. Leave 18+ to very large, very complex builds, as well as themes more marketable to adults.

What makes you think that this isn't a theme marketable towards adults? The show has been running for over 50 years, I think it's reasonable to assume that there are some adult fans out there.

What are you expecting, Lego After Dark?

I think the problem is that they generally don't do it where it counts, in the eyes of fans. There's probably some obligation for LEGO to produce figures for the new characters Disney is trying to market, so it's a given. I don't want to speak for everybody but at the end of the day, I don't think people care for characters like Boolio, First Order Jet Troopers, or the Knights of Ren.

What gets to me is stuff like the lazy and ill-fitting re-use of Shaak-Ti's headpiece for the new Ahsoka figure, who's a character I think fans care more about.

It’s too bad the stripped printing doesn’t carry to the arms on Bert and Ernie, as their arms look a little off as a result. But it’s still a great set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So funny to read the negativity and entitlement in some of these comments. Way to take the message of the show to heart! *eyeroll*

LEGO did a great job IMO. This was never going to be easily marketable as a $250+ modular, and I’m sure it wasn’t easy for the designers leaving characters on the cutting room floor (I.e Count and Grover). As a lifelong Sesame Street fan, this set is absolutely wonderful.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The fact that they made new molds is confusing (if it is indeed against the rules, I haven’t checked them in a while). But the upside is that if you land on an interesting idea, there’s a very slim chance that they would make new molds for it (or at least for popular IP’s anyway).

Gravatar
By in United States,

They should do a LEGO Ideas Banana Splits set one day.

Gravatar

Considering the wide range of age groups and demographics that these two licenses generally try and engage it is hugely disappointing that the only characters included in this set are all male.

I'm a bit confused, I haven't seen much negativity or entitlement. Admittedly what I said may come off as entitlement a little, but that's just because I really, really like the characters and want more Muppets in LEGO form. There's nothing wrong with wanting more Muppets. You can never have enough Muppets.

When it comes to the possibility of making a purchase for an impressionable young mind, yes I do think representation is very important. Sesame Street was an important part of shaping my learning as a child and used in the right way it can be beneficial to lots of children, making sure that those children feel included in this is a terrific way to establish a connection regardless of whether you’re talking about human characters or characters made of felt.

Gravatar

As a young child I dressed as Super Grover for Halloween one year. I was so excited when I thought I would be getting a LEGO version with this set. Here's hoping this is endeavor is successful and they decide to make additional sets with additional minifigs (which includes Super Grover).

What part of Elmo makes him male? Or Big Bird? Do you really need someone pink and frilly for other people to relate?"

I hate to butt in here, but the character concepts of each Muppet do include gender. To my knowledge they have not yet introduced a specific Muppet character who identifies as Gender Fluid, Gender Neutral or Transgender.

So yes, Elmo is male, personal pronouns used to refer to him are Him/He and such. The same goes for Big Bird, he has always been Him, not Her, not anything else. They were created at a time before those notions were made as relevant as they are today.

So all of the characters in this set are self-identified as Male. Not a single one is Female or Gender Fluid/Trans. And some people might want to see that representation in their favorite children's show represented by a favorite children's toy. Just saying.

Agreed. I love the set and will still probably get it for my five year old daughter, but the absence of any female characters - especially Abby - is disappointing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think this is fantastic for one main reason. That main reason is that all the Minifigures have new molded heads. Before now Lego had said that were going to stop making new molds with Lego Ideas. But since this set has (from just the pictures) at least 5 new molds this means Lego Ideas might allow very limited new molds in projects. Another reason I like this is because it's super nostalgic. I grew up watching Sesame Street every day after I got home from school in kindergarten. Therefore this is super nostalgic and looks great!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the main reason why the put a bunch of new molds in this and not Star Wars, DC, and Marvel is because this will most likely be a one time thing and we'll never get more Sesame Street sets. Also I have no clue why all of the sudden Lego has decided to make new molds for Ideas even when the original project didn't include new molds.

Quite different from the original and missing Count Dracula. I voted for the original mainly for the really wacky interior room designs, which with a smaller build and no basement seem to have disappeared here into two simple bedrooms (from the images on the main page 21324)?

This is an amazing set and the minifigures open up so many possibilities for future sets, but this is a set that definitely shouldn't be 18+

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The new moulds for the Minifigures is a massive first for ideas sets, and gives me a lot of hope for the future ones - especially Winnie the Pooh!

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Hope "The Blacksmith" comes next.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It wouldn't surprise me to now see a Sesame Street Minifigure Series... Seems like they've got a plethora of options to come up with 16 (or maybe 12 if rumors are to be believed) figures for a full set. And it would be a chance to get either a Grover, or even better, Super Grover minfig!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think it's a shame this was downside so much, they could have split it into two sets and kept the complexity of the original build.

It looks a little like they were trying to keep to a budget for some reason.

An easy no for me. I'll wait for the Blacksmith.

Um...I got nothing.

@fredsticks:
That’s more of a failing on the show, or indeed perhaps the audience. I can think of a number of male characters who have been left out, but I couldn’t name a single female character on the show. I know they exist, and I know one even made the news in recent years for some inclusivity-based reason, but none of them have caught on to the extent that any of the characters in this set have. Whether that’s due to the audience only caring about the (male) characters the show focuses on, or the show focusing on the (male) characters that are popular with the audience, I couldn’t say, but there’s no Princess Leia on this show. I mean, look at the comments. Nobody is complaining that any of these characters shouldn’t have made the cut, and the two characters several people said they wished were included with Grover and the Count. A couple of people mentioned other characters, but I don’t even recognize most of those names.

Glad someone pointed this out! I’m very pleased with the price. If it were $200 I honestly wouldn’t be able to consider it for a while. Definitely grabbing this!

By in United States,

It is a brilliant set in my opinion and reasonably priced. They will sell like hot cakes.

I don’t know why some are choosing to pick on the 18+ marketing: who cares? Does anyone look at that besides parents? And those parents will likely still buy it regardless of the marketing. Kind of a moot point IMO that people keep bringing this up.

To the point of characters missing, I like to imagine this means we will likely see a follow up. The demand for Grover and Count will push that. It’s likely that Sesame Workshop has signed licensing agreements for more than just this single set.

I hope not. If they did that, they would need to repeat all of the popular characters already included in this set, as most kids will not have this set (just like they do with HP, Simpsons, Disney). Plus there is supposedly Looney Tunes, more Potter, S21 to come, so it would be another year before they are out.

Although if they are going to do a Sesame Street CMF series, I'd prefer they did a Muppets one instead. "

Muppets and Sesame Street are two separate entities. The Mouse only got one, meaning if LEGO has a deal to make Sesame Street characters, they are only allowed to make Sesame Street Characters.

That being said it's possible that if this proves popular enough they might go for Muppets to.

Right now, if they made a series of characters to compliment this set I would prefer to see them at least make a full set.

Count Von Count and Grover are a must, I wouldn't say no to Prairie Dawn or Bert and Ernie in their PJs. I also wouldn't be opposed to an Oscar with fully realized body. But I'm sure there's any number of characters a lot of newer folks would like.

If they do carry forward with more Sesame Street release though then I insist they give us a Big Bird who is Blue. Because not only was Sesame Street my childhood, but so too was Follow that Bird, and it's the only time I can recall Big Bird was ever shown in a different look.

We need a crazy kooky car for the Count, a bi-plane for Bert and Ernie and a circus tent with Ferris wheel too. God this takes me back.

By in United States,

I really like this! I don’t think it’s necessarily a “day one” purchase for me, but I definitely intend to pick it up at some point during its lifespan. I just watched a YouTube video showing the set and that was definitely what pushed me over. The pictures look great too, but I was looking at them on my little phone screen and I didn’t realize just how many details this set really has!

By in United States,

Why is no one mentioning Mr. Snuffleupagus? I bet we see some follow up sets. They have to amortize the cost of all the new molds so it makes sense why some characters are missing. Otherwise this set would have pushed past $200. There is no way LEGO will miss the opportunity for creating Grover or Count! I could be wrong though

By in Germany,

From my memory Sesame Street was quite different in Germany. Can't remember this setting at all. So from that viewpoint this set would not be for me.
But I really like the look of this plus all the cool minifigs, especially Ernie and Bert of course as the most famous. The Krümelmonster (Cookie Monster) is a must have as well.
If this drops sub 100 Euro at some point I am definitely getting it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like this very much but I'm gonna save that little bit Extra & Buy the Batwing!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Let's say TLC decides to make a Collectible Series of minifigs from the Sesame Street theme, and let's also suppose that the series will include 12 characters like the new series are rumored to have. This is what I would like to see in such a series:

The Count
Grover/Super Grover
Telly
Zoe
a proper Oscar
Gordon
Maria
Luis
Yipyip alien 1
Yipyip alien 2
Guy Smiley
Kermit (Although I admit that even if they made a new mold for Kermit's head, I don't know how they would make his body, since he would look very widely stretched if he were made with regular MF parts.)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm surprised that Grover isn't in this, since he's such an iconic character. So sad. Otherwise, this is downright delightful. Not one for me to buy, but I absolutely wouldn't turn it down if it was offered to me. I like that the Snufflupagus (not sure how it's spelled) and Oscar's worm got mentions in this though. All in all, I like this.

Now we just need Kermit to show up. :P I'm only half kidding BTW.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Excellent, but the 18+ raises eyebrows for me. I understand LEGO is doing this for their D2Cs, but I think there should be some control over each one. Yes, I know Friends, The Aston Martin (with 007 licensing) and Stranger Things debuted before the rating was introduced, but should they really be lower than Sesame Street?

Nonetheless, this incident reminds me of a fact I read in a QI book. Apparently, the first seasons of Sesame Street were labelled ‘Adult Only’ on their DVDs as the show was aimed at an older audience back then (For example, Cookie Monster smoked a pipe). Weird.

Anyway, I absolutely love this. The builds are excellent and same goes for the figures. It just needs Grover and it’s all set.

By in United States,

Great looking set. Definitely a Christmas purchase for our 3 and 4-year-olds (and their parents, of course). Two thoughts:

1. The original submission was nice; I rather like this better. That said, it does seem like the "Idea" was simply "get the Sesame Street license and recreate the main television set," rather than the specific project that was submitted.

2. For those who are wondering about the representation angle, our children have watched every episode of Sesame Street that has aired since 2013 (multiple times), and a good few from before that, too. Our daughter is going to be SUPER confused about why there is no Abby figure.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sesame Street debuted the same year I did! I watched it a lot. I _will_ get this set as soon as I can afford it. It's not perfect, but it is awesome! I hope they do a CMF series.

Gravatar

I read the price as $199.99 instead of $119.99. Let me just say that I’m relieved it’s not the latter.

Toad (from Mario) uses a Minion body, and we did have a LEGO Movie character which was a minidoll, so I don't see a problem in mixing body types. And, Kermit is second to only Beaker as my favorite Muppet.

By in United States,

I must say that this set looks really amazing and I kind of have the feeling that it is a one and done license as this set really gives you everything you need, it isn’t like there is another location that needs to be displayed. It also includes almost all the major characters.

Clearly the emphasis is on the past here. I’ve heard of Abby and Zoe, but only ever seen them in books. I would have preferred Grover over Elmo as Elmo wasn’t part of the show when I watched it, but a few years later he was and my brother and sister loved him, so he’s justifiable as they are definitely on the + side of 18.

The minifigures look incredible and while I watched the show every day as a kid, I just don’t see myself buying this. I’m not saying the show isn’t influential and didn’t have a tremendous impact on me, but it’s impact was short-lived. The show was/is designed for preschoolers and as great as it is gets outgrown. It isn’t like Star Wars which I watched my entire childhood and still watch today and enjoy.

Anyways, I do like the set and would be very happy to have it, but if I’m going to spend the kind of money this set costs, there are other sets I would want to have first. Besides, the set would look very out of place on either Hoth or Endor.

@ResIpsaLoquitur:
I would have figured one of the mainland boroughs, but Manhattan is apparently correct. Precisely _where_ in Manhattan is a subject of disagreement, as the show's creative team never clearly defined it as a group, so a few of the people involved had conflicting ideas on where it was.

@Odeinoichus:
Minecraft is still getting new sets after being the first Cuusoo set to be approved after they expanded the program to the entire world. Ghostbusters, BttF, Doctor Who, and Adventure Time all got Dimensions packs after the licenses were obtained for their Ideas sets, and Ghostbusters ended up getting an additional set with the Firehouse based on the original movie, another set based on the ill-advised reboot, and the hint of a promise that the upcoming ignore-the-reboot threequel will get more sets. Besides those, Steamboat Willie tied into an existing license.

@Darth_Dee:
You don't want to see a repeat of the Tickle Me Elmo doll fiasco of 2006?

@vizzitor & others:
Henson was hired by Children's Television Workshop to create the puppets for Sesame Street, and ended up agreeing to do so on the condition that the Jim Henson Company would end up owning the characters and split the proceeds from any merchandising. CTW was in the driver's seat for any licensing agreement, though. But the characters are still kinda tied to the series, and I can only think of two actual Muppets that have appeared on Sesame Street (Kermit and Rowlf). Jim Henson was preparing to sell the actual Muppets to Disney when he passed away, and his son Brian shut that deal down. They did two of the most interesting Muppet movies (Christmas Carol and Treasure Island) afterwards, and then ended up going ahead with the sale to Disney after all. So, currently Kermit is locked up in a cage by The Mouse, and it's unlikely that he'll appear in any Sesame Street sets.

@fakespacesquid:
'89 Batman was 2019, though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I am disappointed, I was expecting pretty much the original design with a few changes, but this is really aimed at a wider audience which from a business perspective I get. But as somone else pointed out, like me there will be others that was hoping this would keep with the modular feel and put this next to the ghostbusters fire House. I will probably pass unless it goes on sale.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This is much better than the original submission. No one wants another Ghosterbuster type house in a $350 modular format. Love the minifigures here and the price is great for what it is

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I really just want Big Bird here, he looks amazing esp with roller skates :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

One other thing to point out here are the two technic bricks on the side of Hooper’s store. I hadn’t noticed that before. I have to believe that is with good reasoning

Gravatar
By in United States,

@CCC:
They'd never just repeat a minifig that's already been released in a previous set. They could, however, tweak the designs. Big Bird could have sunglasses, Bert and Ernie could be wearing pajamas, and maybe Oscar could have a different expression on his face. Elmo & Cookie Monster would be tricky, as about the only way to really change their appearance would be to add fur print to the bodies.

@morvit:
Some do. Some don't. Remember, it was the bigger version that got 10k people to vote for it, not this set. But, the more expensive a set is, the more likely it is to fall outside of a fan's price range, so for all the people here who are complaining that the changes made to the original project just lost them a sale, the reduced size comes with a reduced price that will net a lot more buyers. While AFOLs are fully aware of what the original submission looked like, the general public never sees anything but the final set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks really awesome... translated well to the final design. Would have loved a Count and Grover, but understand there are limitations. I think the smaller scale actually works better than the IDEAS submission model.
