road plates... :-)

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Lego City got a HUGE improvement compared to 2020. Most of the sets look amazing. Even a new Farm set among them, that's neat.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These are all great sets!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I think the Lego Group has microphones in my house.. a fire bulldozer? My kid's going to go crazy!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

ROAD PLATES!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Poorest city wave in years?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The only set i plan on buying is the town square and the jet transporter. I know little kids will like the other sets, and that is why LEGO chose those sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm still not sure how I feel about these new "road plates"... what I really want to see is how they handle curves.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Finally a new firefighter helmet piece! The previous one was so ooold.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What are those fire and water pieces. I feel like I’d be playing with playmobile what is this garbage. And a fire snow plough ??

Those road plates on the other hand... me likey. Modulars here we come. Finally maybe have some decent looking roads next to mine.

Gravatar
By in France,

I really warmly enjoy the fact that a young disabled kid is having fun on that skate park with her or his friends. Even if she/he sure tries far too dangerous tricks with thiswheelchair, it's an important thing that such characters have a place and a role in lego worlds and games of our kids IMO. Bravo Lego.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A guide dog in the city centre set is very welcome.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Looks like we get a new Labrador Retriever and a Golden Retriever in City next year :D

Gravatar
By in Poland,

It seems Lego does the same with the City as with the Town in 1997- juniorises the sets. These buidlings look too plain, and the cars are downscaled and lack the doors to fit on the new road plates. Sad, of course for an adult. :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This new road plate system is so interesting, and leads itself to a bit more customisation.

A big variety of City, probably the most variety we’ve had in years, not just police or fire 100% (Skate Park!). Some of the cars look a little odd though, especially that squished little people mover in the house set.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

That tractor looks great! Also the sports car! great sets imo in the 10-20$ range for city! A big improvement from last year!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love the skate park, especially the inclusion of a kid in a wheelchair.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'm surprised by the number of positive comments; to me these look like more of the same.

I'm glad most people seem happy though, as I rarely buy city sets anyways. Big up the road plates!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Tractor, yes! Road plates, yes! Holiday camper van, yes! Skate park, nice !Town centre, nice!..........the wheels set up on that planes low loader?? Er No
Modern family house...? What is that?
A mixed bag in my opinion

Gravatar
By in United States,

GLOW IN THE DARK STREETLIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll be honest...the majority of these sets are garbage.` I'm not really interested in the new baseplate system and I'm indifferent to the new design, but the vehicles themselves are lacking a sense of reality and detail of the last few years. I sensed it creeping in with last year's City line but 2021 is even worse. I know the respective designers worked hard on these sets but they really fall short of the standard set forth by previous waves.

I'll probably grab 60228...possibly 60287 but that stacked windshield arrangement is really disappointing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks like mostly the same old same old to me for the Police & Fire sets but I want some of those large Flame pieces. I want the farm people & their produce from the Tractor set but I don't want the tractor. The modern Family House looks interesting.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Nice to see more sets focusing on regular townsfolk. Nice to see that not everything in Lego City revolves around Police officers and Firefighters.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I laughed out loud when i noticed the fireman in the Town Centre set is using a water pistol.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Road plates?!?
This warms my heart. Kids these days also deserve Lego roads to lay out their city plan.

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

I LOVE that "60287 Tractor"

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The roadplates are cool. You can make 3 lane roads now!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Okay, most of these are for very young children, but I did notice a new dog walking harness in the City Center set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

"turning action". Does that mean a new piece?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Ok, a few thoughts about the new road plates.
1. They still don't accommodate for Speed Champions vehicles.
2. The road surface (two plates high) is higher than the sidewalk of modular buildings (one baseplate + one plate high).

Gravatar
By in United States,

It really feels like the City design team is handcuffed by corporate suits. There's so much more that could be done with the theme, but it feels like we get a slight re-skin of police helicopters, motorcycles, dune buggies, and camper vans every year.

I got exactly the same feeling when I read the article. Just look at the new fire pieces! They would be fitting for the 4+ sets. And the structure (it‘s too small for a building) which comes with the Fire Helicopter is nearly identical to the one which is included with the Fire Command Unit.
However, the wheelchair stunt performer and the blind person are a really welcome addition to the city. The new animals also look really cute, but the overall trend is concerning :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Think the tractor 60287 looks fab for a modern tractor but the join 1/2 way up the windscreen ruins the look.
I think a slight extension to the connection point between the bucket arm and the tractor body should have been included with some form of bar sticking up. This would have acted as a remote pivot point around which the arm operates & is controlled - increasing the sense of proper control of the bucket away from having to directly hold it.

Gravatar
By in Estonia,

Recently every City release wave has been getting worse. The "age" argument does not explains why these sets are so bad. Older city sets, cars, buildings etc looked realistic and toyish enough and was still targeted towards the 6-7 YOs. A lot of AFOLs gladly bought it too. Lego has been dumbing down the City line for a while now, to direct the grown up customers to its ever growing adult themes. They see that kids will want the whatever city police theme they make that year anyway. Unfortunate for lego, not all AFOLs are Star Wars/Marvel/comic etc fans. And the products such as lego art with the pop culture references will not be for everybody. City theme is the reason why many people got into lego in the first place. Seeing this "playmobilisation" is saddening. My only hope is thinking that maybe Lego is doing these awful City sets to not to repeat its old design patters, and hopefully one day will get better

@Romans122 said:

Seems so. I'm assuming the body of the vehicle leans to one side or the other and the axles slightly pivot to create a turning action.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would like to see how well these road plates & attached structures stick together once they are picked up - I can't help but expect everything to start separating to disastrous effect. Younger kids struggle to understand the physics involved - but they will learn from their mistakes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Friends did a skate park set five years ago in 41099. So looking forward to doing a comparative review! And like Brick't said, props to LEGO for including a skateboarder in a wheelchair.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Totally buying 6-8 sets of road plates to make my city. This will be out of stock all the time!

No train set yet, so maybe my wallet will be able to breathe. But this is also looking like an imminent Modular reveal!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm pumped about the new dogs and the skate part... Pepper Roni would approve!

Most of all, I'm excited about the NEW ROAD SYSTEM! I miss the classic baseplates, but I love that for the first time ever, we have a completely modular road system that doesn't even necessarily have to be on the ground... highways here we come! Finally a successor to 6600-2!

I saw the new skate part first and assumed they were just part of the ramps. Then I saw the house driveway, and thought it was a weird inclusion. Then I got to the town square, and had not-that-great flashbacks to the speed champions layouts. It took seeing the standalone set to really see the potential.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Not that bad of a wave. The police and fire sets don’t interest me (except the prisoner transport), but the great vehicles have an excellent round-up. The tractor, modern home and skate park are probably the standouts.

However, I’m not a fan of the new roadplates. I would rather baseplates, but maybe this is only because they’re new.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Well at least there is a family house and another camper van. Will be interesting to see those road plates a bit closer.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

We need MORE FARM ANIMALS

Gravatar
By in Australia,

And that house is inexcusably awful.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Is that a new ribbed 2x2 brick in the tractor set?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

One thing to note is that this appears to have the fewest police sets of any January wave since 2010.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

So Tractor and the Construction Truck, don't like those baseplates specially since I have my City planned on the 32x32 system.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The dude on the halfpipe in 60290 is in a colored wheelchair. Would be cool too see the seats and wheels in more colors to create custom figs. I'm picturing a Classic Space commander in a blue and yellow one now.

It looks like 60291 comes with a new dog piece, not sure though

60304 Road Plates is interesting... It always bothered me that baseplates weren't level with regular plates, and building multi lane roads or elevated highways was a bit tricky, but it looks like they come with more parts and could get crazy expensive. Either way it'll be a great starting point for building Cities. Even though I don't plan on making one for a long time I may pick up a few for the future.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Only two police sets? Are Lego feeling ok?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Loving the new road plates, and the sets they come in! The skate park is really cool looking and I love the inclusion of a sports wheelchair! The apartment/house is also great (the City theme features far too few residential buildings normally), and is that a golden retriever? And the City Center's guide dog is another great hat tip to inclusive design (and a great showcase for the new crosswalks). Even the standard "road plate" kit seems interesting, not just because of its modularity but also the neat touch of including glow-in-the-dark streetlights!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Finally, good LEGO road pieces!

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Just noticed the 'turning system' on the Race Buggy Transporter. This is quite interesting to me, I've thought for a while that it might be possible to design a special axle piece where the wheels can turn side to side and the vehicle can actually 'steer'. Didn't think this piece would ever actually exist, looking forward to seeing reviews of how it works. I wonder how common this piece will become, and if they'll make a similar piece for wider vehicles.

Also, will this be compatible with regular 'city' style vehicles with smaller wheels, or will it be limited to open wheel style vehicles like this?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

OMG Lego have turned the clock back to 1999/2000. Alot of the vehicles look like they are from this era! And some are just a rehash in different colours ie Beach Rescue ATV and Race Buggy Transporter. Very poor IMO. City is very much the poor relation of all the categories now a days. Obviously the good designs lie elsewhere. And whats with the wheelchair in the skate park!

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

SHIRLEY KEEPER!
best character in the show, I tell you!

Gravatar
By in Estonia,

Road Plates should be called Roady Tiles or smth, for no plateness in sight.
And 60290 probably gets cancelled for insulting disabled people - living confined to a wheelchair is not 'fun' and if the set is supposed to be depicting a healthy minifig, then using a wheelchair as a 'fun sports equipment' is worse. Plus imagine if some kid would try to go and mimic the rail-grab scene in a borrowed wheelchair IRL...
A blind person with a guide dog in 60292 is excellent though. And soon there might be enough different breed molds to make a city 2in1 UCS dog show/pound set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m here for the tractor. More “farm city” please, if such an oxymoron exists.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the new roads, but is it me or do all these new sets seem very Juniorised? It's like a return to the Lego Town of 1999-2000...

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

How much longer are Lego going to tease farm sets? Why can't they just release the City sub-theme for them like they did back in 2009?

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Am I the only one around here who will stock up some good old road baseplates before they will be swept out of the shelves upon the release of these new ones? :D These new thingies seem way too high and narrow, building a curve will be a real pain, and if you want to make a bigger city layout, your wallet will cry out loud because I'm quite sure these will be much more pricey because of all the small bits and pieces.
I had the exact same thought about two steps forth and two steps back: less police and firefighters is definitely a plus, but most of the sets feel awkwardly juniorized and cartoonish - police and fire sets feel like some Playmobil toys, and those buildings are also way too oversimplified. More civillian-related stuff is a good direction and there are some neat ideas like the wheelchair kid, the blind guy and the inclusion of mid-sized legs, but apart from the tractor, sports car, buggy transporter and skate park, these sets are a miss. I have a very bad feeling that the dark juniorized era will return, but let's hope the best... until then, my wallet will be safe for a while at least :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

Admittedly, I'm really curious how expensive the Road Plates will be. My City collection usually grows in the form of a modular building here and there then comes out to play with the train around Christmas. I don't have enough old road baseplates to bother with that level of detail...but THESE! They're so slick and fancy. Except if I get one, then I'd really need more like 15 or 20 so things really look right...

That's where you're mistaken. They're all a part of the latest iteration of the police force, the LEGO Secret Police. Who's a member? No one knows!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Don't know what to make of those road plates. Pretty dull selection otherwise - I kinda like the look of the tractor, but everything else we've either seen before or is just pitched too young to pique my interest

Gravatar
By in United States,

Glow in the Dark road plates?

SOLD!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'm pretty sure it's glow in the dark street lamps...unless there has been a nuclear holocaust.

Is that a new rat?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The big question for me with the new road plates is cost - they look expensive, esp. if one wants to set up an entire City...

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

There are further images on that Dutch site - the family house actually seems to contain not only a kitchen, a living room and a bedroom but a bathroom too, making it the very first "complete" City house!

Gravatar
By in United States,

So many wonderful small sets. 60279 Fire Hazard Truck, 60283 Holiday Camper Van, 60286 Beach Rescue ATV, 60287 Tractor, 60288 Race Buggy Transporter, and a few larger sets 60290 Skate Park and 60291 Modern Family House have all been added to my want list.

Though the best is, clearly, the Farm Tractor. Is it a one-off or do we get FARM!!!!! sets this year.

By in Ireland,

The tractor looks great, some of the cars are ok, but some are truly awful.
The red car in 60276 and the blue and white thing in 60291 are the worst City cars in a decade.
The range rover in 60288 is a rehash of 7635 only with bigger wheels (that look wrong) but the most interesting thing in this wave are the steering wheels on the buggy in 60288.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Well. The police sets are getting worse. And the fire sets aren't worth picking up, either.

I am liking the normal vehicle (that sports car looks really great. Same with the tractor). That's about the third holiday camper they've released, but I do like it.

The road plates, though?

I'm scratching my head about those.

Aren't they just going to jack up the price, needlessly?

Look at the modern house. There's no reason that set needs a giant chunk of street in front of it, yet I'll bet Lego will adjust the price accordingly (for all those new grey pieces).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope the glow-in-the-dark 1x2 plates will eventually be available from BnP so I can get a few dozen. Or a couple hundred.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Finally, a house! A house of the future, too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope that tractor teases a summer farm subtheme, preferably with goats and a black and white cow!!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Finally, a breath of fresh air for LEGO City. Buildings with roads included? Amazing. Plenty of smaller vehicles to balance it out this wave too, and less of a focus on the emergency services for once. Awesome. Awesome to the max.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Whoever decides on the City Fire subthemes has a sick sense of humor. Last year we had an "arson" subtheme. Next year we're getting a radioactive/hazmat subtheme. Because firefighters would put out fires at a nuclear power plant?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Finally a farm related set. Let's hope they expand on this.
Not very keen on the new road system though.

By in United States,

The big thing for me is the new firefighter helmets. Been calling for them The style LEGO has been using since the '70s fell out of favor in the US since the late '80s when OSHA regulations changed, making the Topgard (my Granddad had a mining version of the Topgard--and let me tell you, it is NOT protective and is very flimsy). In addition, many US fire departments have adopted European helmets as opposed to the traditional style because they don't get hung up on stuff. The new helmet looks like a modern Gallet, and is quite sleek. I'm probably gonna buy every 60279 I see. Once released, I'm getting 5-6. When COVID dies down, I can't wait to go to Walmart again to buy LEGO in person.

The only police set I care about is the "Unimog". I'm converting it into a more general-purpose unit; sort of like a flood rescue unit, or even a SWAT vehicle. Plan to copy it with red and white bricks to be a brush truck for the FD.

As for fire sets--I don't like the helicopter, and I wish 4+ would be put back as an independent theme instead of a component of regular themes. I hate that we haven't got a proper standalone engine in a long time. But, the truck in the mobile command center is pretty good looking. I plan to make a Hazmat, tractor-drawn heavy rescue, or dozer transporter out of it.

I love the new tractor. Do wish it had a passenger seat; since the farmer and his daughter are minifigs. My great uncle had German-market Deeres on his farm (guy who owned the farm was from Germany), and there was a small seat to the left of the operator for a passenger.

Looks to me more like a UTV with a snowplow blade. Fire, EMS, and police all use UTVs in various capacities where I live. This one looks more like a Polaris RZR-type that has been converted for fire use.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Honestly, I have not been a fan of CITY sets over the past few years. Little variety for me I guess. My personal favorite is probably the cheapest one of the bunch, the Beach Rescue ATV. Simplicity at its best. The set looks to serve its purpose without a lot of extras getting in the way. I thought the new road plates looked intriguing, but I am still a fan of the current ones (and the much older ones in my collection). Besides, LEGO will most likely hike up the price and that will definitely keep me away.

Gravatar
By in United States,

im not feeling the road plates. But more importantly, are they going to discontinue the flat road plates? I haven't built my city yet! :/

Gravatar
By in United States,

I haven’t seen this clarified (maybe I missed it), but are most City sets now going to be connected to the TV show? This would perhaps explain some of the design decisions for those of us who are not familiar with the show.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These new roads look nice, but they also look very expensive, don't have sidewalks, seem too narrow. I imagine the prices for the old road baseplates are going to skyrocket in an instant. Building a real Lego city now is going to be even more costly.

This isn’t a forum for site feedback, but as a user I’ll defend the website:

- If you log in, there’s no ads. You logged in to comment.

- In my opinion, if this site doesn’t load it’s probably something else. This site is fairly lightweight as far as I can tell. (Not in database complexity, but the makeup of the pages and views).

And the buggy transport 4x4 is a near complete copy of 60149 from 2017.

The glowing street lamps could be interesting, but for me that then leaves all the headlights and buildings that would need to "be on" as well, that's the OCD there, all or nothing for lighting.

One hopes that the center lines on the 2x4 tiles for the new roads are printed otherwise there's going to be some wonky traffic. If they are though it has just solved a problem in part of my city so, bring it on.

The only positives I can see are the guide dog, and the new fire helmets! I was just musing on that yesterday. Looks like a lot of retrofitting to be done. (I only hope they work with the SCBA)

Gravatar
By in France,

I hope the White lines on the road plate tiles are printed. Don’t want a drunken wobbly road in my town.....

How are they going to do curves?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

These new road plates are very interesting, and I like them! The sets that come with them are really nice as well, especially the skate park. I'm definitely picking that one up. The sports car and tractor are both really good sets as well. And that race buggy transport is the second thing in these new reveals that uses this strange (new?) shade of purple/pink. I'm pretty sure that's a new color. In both these city sets as well as the technic/creator sets from the previous article they seem to be using a lot more obscure colors and color combinations, and I really like it! LEGO is really stepping up their game once again!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

From the last photo the roadplates seem to be one large 16x16 tile with 4 cutouts, but four 8x8 would have been more useful for single lane roads and easier to do other builds with, e.g. use as vertical walls. My only concern is that they highlight how skinny the builds are, especially the apartment block, and I would rather the bricks went on larger rooms with no road!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

More police and fire sets. Who would have guessed???
:-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The town centre set is quite charming and reminiscent of classic town to me. I welcome another small two storey building, though it's predictably another unimaginative pizza place. Easy to mod that.

I'm glad kids new to Lego will get roads included in sets again, though I'm not sure what to make of this system yet. Certainly has promise. Being two plates high will make building placement challenging and more parts intensive. Will clearly be an expensive solution compared to road baseplates.

Like the camper but already have the (better IMO) previous one, the tractor is spoiled by the windscreen design and a lot of the vehicles (eg. that modern home one) are utterly pathetic. As a kid I loved opening doors even if they weren't actually of use for getting a minifig inside. I'm sure today's kids would find they increase realism and play value.

A mixed bag but overall I'm positive about Lego moving back to having something at least close to resembling sets with baseplates again.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

That tractor reminds me of some of their classic tractors from about 20 years ago... that is the only true must have here for me - it even has a rabbit in it! I don't mind the idea of the modular built-up road plates set either, but I think I might have to see a more detailed review of that before I buy it.

A fire offroader with a blade to plow burning wood.
A fire helicopter which shoots water bolts.
A fire motorbike.
Industrial structures with burning radioactive (?) material.
A guy in a wheelchair with neon green wheels doing parkour (is this a real thing?)
A condo with super-tiny and super-expensive apartments, with kids playing on the street.
A blind minifig with a guide dog (!) and a pizza thief chilling around while a fireman desperately tries to put out a fire with a water pistol (because that's all he can carry on his sporty fire motorbike).

LEGO is really getting confusing.

It's also a good indirect Paralympics tie-in, if they go ahead.

I sensed it creeping in with last year's City line but 2021 is even worse. I know the respective designers worked hard on these sets but they really fall short of the standard set forth by previous waves.

I'll probably grab 60228...possibly 60287 but that stacked windshield arrangement is really disappointing."

100% share.

The road bases, then, are the garbage par excellence. More expensive and for much more static layouts. At least "two steps back" in my opinion.

Except only the camper, the skate park for the proposed minifigures and a few other details (for example the new guide dog). The rest sucks.

By in United Kingdom,

Only the Camper Van, Tractor and possibly the Skate Park stand out for me. Everything looks juniorised, particularly the vehicles. The Modern Town House looks like a basic version of 31097 Townhouse Pet Shop & Café.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Another camper? It seems there's a new one every 3 months coming out.

It's good to see the road truck with the newer rat and the tractor with the rabbit. Also new dogs, green wheelchair and a new fire element that I think is justified because it shows more fullness.

Interested in the modern house even if it seems kinda weird. But the roadplates with just the traffic lights and no other buildings don't make any sense to me.

Love this. When my kids were younger I mixed City and Friends BECAUSE WHERE DO PEOPLE LIVE?

I don't get all the salt about the fire/police sets being "juniorized." Y'all already said you don't want any more. So they're not for you anyway.

Ugh, lego why do you have to go and change the base plate system, again. It was fantastic when city sets used to come with baseplates to build on, and that they worked as part of the larger street system. The old baseplates were expensive enough, I dont see how this is going to help the problem. Just do what the people have been asking for the whole time, split the current baseplate sets out into four sets with two of the same in each.

"Road Plates should be called Roady Tiles or smth, for no plateness in sight.
And soon there might be enough different breed molds to make a city 2in1 UCS dog show/pound set."

The road plates have tiles placed on them to link them together, link them to other plates, and add features like road stripes and crosswalks. They're not entirely unlike the plates used as bases in 4+/Juniors sets, but with the upper surface completely stud free for a smooth road surface.

Also, your comment about the sport wheelchair (which is a real thing) is ignorant, if unintentionally so. There are absolutely disabled athletes out there, including those who use wheelchairs in "extreme sports". The idea that people who use wheelchairs should not have "fun" or get to participate in activities with abled peers is much, much more harmful than abled kids seeing disabled representation that is exciting rather than depressing.

We just had a hospital 2 years ago (60204), and it also had an ambulance.

There was also 60179 (an ambulance helicopter) as well, also from 2018. I found one for barely over MSRP for a used one on eBay for my country (same thing in the UK as well).

I don't know why, but I have a feeling that we might not have curves anymore, none of the sets include any, and presumably they release all the new road plates at the same time. Maybe in the summer wave? That's a bit unusual, though.

And why are headlights becoming trans light blue? Is it to mimic the bluish tinge on LEDs in headlights now?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I wonder if the fire helicopter has room in the back for transporting a patient? The back looks rather abruptly ended and squared off which would allow for rear doors and then the stretcher can slide in. Stretchers seems pointless otherwise.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Am I missing something on the road plates but I don't see how is it supposed to be good...doesn't seem to be compatible with the old road plates/baseplates at all, and honestly I would pick baseplates over that any day. It's just too thick and make the ground raised too much and it's gonna be much heavier and hard to move around. Just no.

Gravatar

Oh dear.
Do I sense the end of road baseplates on the horizon
I’m pretty heavily invested in the old system.
Will be interesting to see how the price of brick built roads compares with the old baseplate system.

It seems the TLG continue to serilosuly juniorizing the city line. I guess it came from some crazy market research studies becuase anyone with healthy taste never choose to buy these sets... It is okay that the these are toys but honestly these are simply ugly even for children. Like their sets in early 2000's. The good news, that it will be a cheap year :) No need to spend any money on city sets next year.

Perhaps, but I've always assumed it was to indicate electric vehicles; some real EVs have light blue sidelights. That said, the new sports car seems to have exhaust pipes. Maybe it's a hybrid.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lots of strong opinions about the new road plates. I’m hoping/assuming Lego has designed them for the long term? It would surprise me if they made a system that was inflexible and couldn't be used in a wide variety of situations. Working around a bad design makes their job harder as well.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Was looking forward to seeing the tractor. Love that the rear wheels have the correct tread pattern. Wish the front ones were the same pattern. Are the rear tyres a new size?

Gravatar

The seven year old me would have killed for those road plates, with glow in the dark streetlights. The 52 year old me will almost certainly still buy them :-)

Looking at 60287, I see(hope for) a Lego Technic backhoe in the near future! (perfect wheels for that)
City is not a theme I buy often but I like the camper and the sports car in this line-up.

Most of these seem pretty okay. Decent 'filler buildings' for a city. I am rather happy with the new fire pieces. I've always struggled with quickly creating a vast fire scene without using a million pieces...

Makes sense, either way if I do happen to pick any of these up, they'll get swapped over to trans clear.

I love the Camper Van, Sports Car, and Tractor. I will be buying Modern House, Town Center, and Road Plates on day 1. I have been trying to use road plates, but they don't work well with modular buildings - too much sidewalk. I love the new roads because you can have fancy boulevards and four-lane roads if you want. They could also bring back the ramp element idea. Instead of needing more 32 by 32 plates, I just need to convert my modular buildings to the plate system. I wonder if Lego will start making 16 by 16 plates more available.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Ugh, they continue the 2020 trend to juniorize Fire/Police sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't see what's not to like about the new roadplates. I can understand having a preference for the old style baseplates and being frustrated if you've invested in them, but otherwise they seem really versatile.

Unlike the old plates, you can make roads as narrow or wide as you like, and you're free to build up whatever kind of sidewalk you want. Incorporating driveways and garages seems easy, and if these have anitstuds, you could do some pretty wild things with them, especially with bridges. So long as Lego makes some accompanying curves that allow for as much variation, I think they're pretty promising. I'd love to make a speed champions racetrack.

By in United Kingdom,

“Am I the only one around here who will stock up some good old road baseplates before they will be swept out of the shelves upon the release of these new ones?”

Best do that now. Last time I looked, they were selling out at a lot of UK retailers. Personally, I like the old absolutes because they are simple to set up. My 6yo has a 3x3 town that she regularly swaps around. The new system would significantly add to cost and complexity without benefitting her in terms of fun and play. She wants to build structures rather than road systems. So this feels more like a nod to AFOLs than kids.

Elsewhere, these sets are an odd bunch. I really like the skate park, but the car seems like a waste of space and parts. Just the park itself at a lower price would have been ideal.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Also, why are the new roads higher than the land next to them? Roads are usually lower than the paths beside them.
