Buildable Adidas trainers teased

Posted by ,

LEGO has just posted a teaser on social media for what appears to be a buildable Adidas trainer!

Other than that it will be 'dropping' on 1st July, no further details are given, but I think it's safe to assume that a press release is imminent, which will of course reveal all.

Does the prospect of buildable trainers excite you?

There seems to be a sudden uptick of giant buildable objects... and I like that!
Some people on this site really need to stop pooh-poohing every new and (different) thing Lego releases.

By in United Kingdom,

LOL, I assume not wearable!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah sure why not

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Not my cup of tea.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Forgive me for being obtuse. But what is a trainer in this context? A shoe? A diaper?

LEGO needs to make a cup of tea ;~P

A ‘sneaker’

By in Singapore,

Interesting how there's a very obviously CGI shoelace but also a photorealistic shoelace over the model itself.

I gotta confess, I didn't see this one coming. But since it's coming, I'm not surprised, it only seems logical they'd do this. I think it'll actually be a pretty neat addition to a sneaker collection. (I'm not a sneakerhead.)

By in Austria,

Yeah...this is definitely a skip for me.
There're weird ideas...and then there's this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks like white Adidas Superstar, classic shoe! Chuck Taylors next?

Gravatar
By in United States,

What the actual...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I hope it is easy to modify with custom colors or patterns.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe this is pushback for anyone who's ever stepped on a brick. "I'LL STEP ON ALL THE BRICKS I WANT."

Gravatar
By in Romania,

This is so weird... looks like something straight out of early 2000's LEGO experiments...

finally... buildable drip

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This is a smart idea. A hobby for some people is to buy rare Adidas/Nike shoes and display them on wall-mounted shelves. I think some non-LEGO fans might buy this as a cool, collectible display piece for the collection.

I love it.

Well put and my thoughts exactly. Now that’s a set I would buy!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was waiting for a teaser of this - immediately I go to the Eurobricks thread on the subject which I’ve been following...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not a shoe I'd wear, but would make walking on LEGO less painful, would actually add height with ever brick you stepped on XD.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Interesting, but definitely not for me

What. The. Hell Lego?

But you didn’t give anyone the chance to even Pooh, never mind Pooh-Pooh. :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As a footwear designer and AFOL, this is so far up my street :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Only of any interest if it comes with a tube of trainer whitener, specially formulated for Lego bricks!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Who builds a shoe? Honestly!

Nah, I think this is neat. I like buildable objects, and Lego is clearly aware that sneakerhead stuff is very on-trend right now.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the idea, but I’m interested to see how they’ll execute this.

A single shoe would look odd as a display piece, but on the other hand (or foot, in this case) a pair would imply the same build twice, albeit mirrored, which might get a bit repetitive (not to mention costly).

You wouldn’t want to foot the bill :~P

Think it's kind of cool but not likely something I'll buy considering all the other options out there that have priority for me.

Someone out there will love it I think!

Couldn't have found a better expression.

Though that might be down to the fact that I am not interested in shoes per se. All I care for is that they fit comfortably. Anything else is secondary to me. But I know lots of people who are crazy about shoes, especially sneakers, so I am certain there will be a market for such a set.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Definitely not interested in the 'model' per se but highly interested in the new parts that will come out of this. The picture posted already shows 2 new curved parts (5x5 quarter curved dome). So, it is a very good start. Then, we will most likely get the Dutch saddleshoes and the high heels but no military boots.

No.

Gravatar

Got to be a right numpty to want that.

What size is it ? Is it Men’s or Women’s shoe ?
The way I see it is I am wearing Lego Adidas shoe and type using Lego typewriter .. my imagination runs out ..

I'm hoping they're wearable and grant me the power to walk over a load of LEGO and get steadily taller in the style of Lord Business.

By in United States,

POOOH!!!

...yet...brilliant. It says to me TLG is going after 'normies' that would otherwise have zero interest in A Sophisticated System of Interlocking Bricks. Go for it LEGO, one of these days you might release a random object that I'll actually purchase =oD

Gravatar
By in United States,

if this is scaled to the Harry Potter and Hermione Granger supersized minifigure builds 76393, then I'll consider buying a couple to have them wearing them!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m into it.
Not into exclusionary, gate-keeping fans though. As someone who was a ‘normie’ nine years ago before becoming a full-fledged AFOL with an empty savings account and a basement full of plastic, I relish opportunities to share the joys of LEGO with non-fans. When I hear people acting like LEGO exists only for their exclusive and unique enjoyment, I’m seriously disappointed. I believe the best aspects of LEGO toys are the broad appeal and accessibility! Learn to love new fans or risk becoming a BFOL, a ‘bitter fan of LEGO’.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am really beginning to question some of LEGO's set ideas. I have no problem with the typewriter, and have actually grown to quite like it. But, a pair of shoes? You gotta be kidding me? I kinda thought the Lego-themed Adidas items looked bad; but the Adidas themed LEGO item is going to be even weirder.

I'm interested to see what they'll look like, but NO I'm not buying them. Unless it's on sale, as its bound to have lots of white panels.

Pretty much everything I wear is Haix, New Balance, Dunlop or Ariat, so it definitely doesn't interest me anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Mmmm, yeah, and what's even worse are PFOLs and SFOLs...Pretentious and Sanctimonious Fans Of LEGO...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I might actually have these shoes irl, not 100% sure but gonna be interesting to see!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Everyone should be into this. It will help get more people into LEGO.

Do people really not know that sneaker culture is a thing? Lots of people collect hundreds of pairs of sneakers. It’s a huge market. If you think the LEGO site queues on new release day are bad, check out the mile-long lines outside of stores when a hot new shoe comes out.

If something’s not for you, a constructive way of thinking is usually “this is not for me. I wonder who this is for” and maybe explore that route and learn something about others.

Gravatar
By in Estonia,

No, it does not excite me. I wouldn't even know what this fetish might be called, latercalceophilia perhaps?

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Ugh...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I always give Lego a lot of credit. I generally enjoy seeing what they bring out for sets people don't expect, everyday objects with really interesting builds. Even if they're not something that interests me personally, I can generally see the appeal for someone.

But this, uh. This is a big "no" from me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

For all the people complaining about this, realize there are people (not me) who spend hundreds of dollars for "collectible" and "limited edition" shoes who will buy this Lego set of classic shoes. You say "I'd never spend money on this!" but those people also say "I'd never spend money on a giant Lego pirate ship!" This is a good way for Lego to draw sales from new customers that otherwise wouldn't buy Lego, much like the Lego Art line. You can have your opinion but don't blame Lego for dropping a turd.

Well said!

These might interest me but I’m keen to see the whole thing. Perfectly happy for it just to be one shoe. Also I’m glad we’re getting some Adidas branded sets out of this collab. Sports revival next please?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not my cup of tea, but I still think a model shoe built out of Lego is a better idea than a shoe or pair of jeans with a tiny 4x4 or smaller plate sewn on that will either tear eventually, or at least be a very hard, breakable, and uncomfortable part of clothing that should be durable and comfortable. Adidas-branded Lego set > Adidas apparel with Lego plate sewn on.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Was going to comment ;

"So long as somewhere, deep at the heart of it, there's a small gold brick...this madness shall be forgiven. Definitely not my cup of liquid which is almost, but not quite entirely, unlike tea!"

Super impressed that quite a few have beat me to it.

I DO like the new 5x5? curved panel with cutout and am now REALLY wondering if we'll get purist shoe laces complete with a LEGO part number?

Gravatar
By in United States,

If you don't like it, don't buy it!

Nobody is saying you have to buy or even like everything LEGO puts out, especially as their range gets larger and larger each year! More diverse projects = more consumers/$$$ = higher likelihood of LEGO taking a chance on niche products that ARE in line with your interests

Gravatar
By in United States,

A sneaker head/Lego collector would love it.
And especially with the instructions, it'll give you a starting point to build/moc other brands.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As a big sneaker head I'm definitely going to buy this! Its going to look awesome on display next to some of my shoes I cant wait to see more promo pics!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@magni_nominis_umbra: If it does have a gold brick somewhere in there, that'd be hilarious. And such a geeky reference wouldn't be an Infinite Improbability...

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Gotta say I love it, but as a lego collecting, sneaker head I feel I might just be their exact target audience…

True, but that doesn't mean you can't voice your opinion if you don't like it. Negative opinions are just as valid as positive ones.

Gravatar

Shrug, I imagine they'll look cool, but I can't imagine buying it.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

A Lego shoe.

I am sure it will look interesting and be well made, but why, out of all the possibilities did it reach the point of becoming an actual set?

I can't help but think that they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.

@Pongo said:
"Are we reaching the Shoe Event Horizon?"

I think we might be approaching the Lego Event Horizon.

The more sets they release, the less desirable each new set is. Very close to crossing into quantity over quality territory by trying to appeal to every niche collector.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

So now instead of stepping on Lego, you can step in Lego

Gravatar
By in United States,

This fall they'll probably be partnering with LL Bean and releasing brick-built winter gloves.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Everyone is discussing whether or not they like it, but I’m more interested in knowing if we will get a buildable sock as a GWP. Otherwise these Legos are going to stink as I can’t imagine they are breathable. Of course a buildable can of the stuff they spray in bowling shoes would also make an acceptable GWP.

Personally, these aren’t for me, but should they release a bowling shoe set, that would be another story.

I don't quite follow the logic as far as the appeal of individual sets is concerned, but I understand the overall sentiment.

I currently experience a kind of "LEGO-fatigue". Too many sets, too many announcements, too much choice - yes, imho there is such a thing.

It might be just me, but I have been like that my entire life. I much prefer to choose between say three options instead of a hundred. The more choices there are, the less inclined I am to buy any of them in the end.
Ten years ago I looked at the LEGO product offerings and saw perhaps 10 or twenty sets I found interesting. So over time I acquired those sets and was happy.
Nowadays I see like 50 to 100 sets that would potentially be of interest. But as there is no way I could afford, let alone find time and space to display all of them, I would have to choose the 10 or twenty sets I would like to have the most, and be unhappy about missing out on so many others.
I personally don't like this situation, which is even worse because nowadays (for me) there is also even more choice because of all the alternative manufacturers - something that simply didn't exist to such an extent ten years ago.

So to sum up, I would love LEGO to have a far smaller product portfolio. Quality over quantity indeed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not sure the point of complaining about those who think this is a dumb idea, even if said idea brings in new customers. Anything has that potential. We’re not obligated to cheer everything TLG puts out. Typically, people are allowed to not like something & voice that opinion.
