Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 9

Posted by ,

LEGO has never assembled the Leaky Cauldron before and I would be interested to see further items from the location. However, I imagine we will need to travel onwards today!

Let's open the door and see...

Diagon Alley is accessed through an apparently solid wall behind the Leaky Cauldron, which opens when certain bricks are tapped. This rendition of that wall achieves remarkable detail, featuring an attractive combination of dark orange, medium nougat and dark brown elements. Their texture looks splendid as well, benefiting from several 1x2 masonry bricks.

Despite appearing completely solid, the wall is cleverly constructed in two sections. One half is constructed with its studs upwards, while the other is upside down. These accordingly interlink beautifully, or they can be separated smoothly. 1x3 inverted tiles are employed here, matching 1x2 tiles at the top and bottom of this wall.

Overall - 4.5 - This model looks good and the successful concealment of the opening function is ingenious, exceeding my expectations!

Well, technically, a wall that's been broken in half.

So technically two walls?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The silver lining: At least it was provided in one build, and you did not have to waste 2 slots to build each of the two halves.

... well played.

By in Netherlands,

A door is a wall you can open; a wall is a door you can't.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

it was expected, even the day was known so same as last build that all probably know what it will be...

the build... works to show what it is but then again... it's just a wall, they could sweeten the deal by some printed poster or something

A 4.5 for a wall.....what?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Suggestion: sing some Pink Floyd while building this.

I think it is nicely designed for such a small model and appreciate whenever Advent Calendars contain subjects which have never appeared elsewhere, simple though they might be.

After all, this is an important wall!

By in Norway,

I agree with the high mark! It's simple yet clever, and, incredibly enough, LEGO's first recreation of this super iconic scene!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Marvellous, and doesn't look like a Swastika at all...

Sometimes live gives you lemons, sometimes you get a wall. And it is a nice wall I guess. Definitely better than lemons, or to hit a wall. The score depends on your perspective ;-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I noticed that the wall also is rotationally symmetric, so it doesn't matter which way up you put it. I think it's a clever build, regardless of the context.

Oh! Now I see it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If you look at the wall from the other side, it's not a swastika. (Or it'd be a reversed swastika, a gyaku manji, which means something else.)

It's also not a swastika in the first place since it lacks the adjoining vertical bars. Your brain is filling in the gaps because the human mind works that way, but it's not actually a swastika.

It's definitely not a German National Socialist Party swastika circa 1939.

Sorta. Pink Floyd's Wall is moar importanter, imo.

This Harry Potter Advent calendar is fast becoming one of the most disappointing I've acquired yet.

Gravatar

Again as an added feature to the overarching Harry Potter story , I love this...

As a quick build, I think it's cleverly designed

What are you tal... oh... That's unfortunate.

I agree with the 4.5, only because I was SURE this was going to be spread across two days. Sure, it's "just a wall", but it's very well-made, and comes from a memorable scene in the movie that, as far as I know, has never been Lego-fied before.

In which we discover that Hagrid names his umbrella “Floyd”.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

When I saw this was just a wall I thought it was going to get a dreadful score but it is actually pretty clever.

Gravatar
By in United States,

30+ years of building LEGO and I don't think I've ever built upside-down before. That was different and cool.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Although I do share the sentiment of many that this years HPAC is somewhat dissapointing, I kinda feel it's not because of the current content, but more because of the high level of the two previous years. Those were above any advent calender previously released in my opinion and thus perhaps we got a little spoiled...

@Mjvizcarra:
Most of the cars I’ve designed have cheese wedges suspended upside-down to fill in around the fenders. My 1960’s Ford Good Humor ice cream truck actually has four cheese wedges that are upside-down, but not attached to anything, in the rear pontoon fenders. They just have other parts holding them in place from six different directions.

By in United States,

I'm surprised more don't see the swastika, but I guess we all view things differently.

I know that wasn't their intention, but did we really need a pattern of dark orange to create that. Maybe even just a 1x1 plate of medium nougat would be enough to break up the design or even a 1x1 brick on one side only?

Either way, clever build idea. But I won't be building it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hmmmm....I wonder how to integrate this, since there's no studs...

Respectfully, I disagree. I'm delighted that Lego are doing something different and not just recycling trees, presents, etc, in an ice themed environment (which is completely irrelevant to those of us who live in Australia at this time of the year); though I concede that's what we see in the movies. The prospect of doing each movie like they are doing this Advent calendar over the next 6 years is a sensational idea and one that will keep me buying them.

I understand what you are saying, but, to me, there have been several days though that have been a bit bland in their visual scope.

It reminds me of the first good Spanish tv series I watched - El Internado, we got a nice school full of secrets and plenty of nazis to spice it up.

How about using a couple of 30586
Or just making a groove in your layout with a tile at the bottom?

@YanVanLan:
Considering how the wall is supposed to work, a channel lined with a tile does seem the most logicial option.
