Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 4

Posted by ,

Weapons were conspicuously missing from the Stormtrooper which emerged yesterday, hence the typically-unpopular weapons rack seems an appropriate addition today.

Let's see whether that proves correct...

In fact, an E-web cannon accompanies the Stormtrooper. This rendition is smaller than various previous examples, but includes reasonable detail. The adjustable legs look excellent and I love the flash suppressor, formed using a truncated cone. The stud shooter fixed on top appears quite awkward, although this provides some play value and the snowball launcher is effective.

The studs on either flank appear unsightly as well. Some texture is certainly welcome, but more elaborate mechanical detail would have improved the design.

Overall - 3.5 - E-web cannons have appeared in numerous Star Wars sets and this version looks quite nice, despite its small size.

Take off the stud-shooter on top and I thought this actually looked pretty good for a Advent-calendar build.

Thanks for the daily reviews!

I don't have a ton of SW sets, so this weapon looks neat. The stud shooter looks awkward, but they always look awkward. But removing it might be a bit bare on top, so I'd have to consider something different.

@Sethro3:
I’ve actually used the handheld version in a few instances where a comically oversized gun actually works (like a cork gun for Harley Quinn) and I’ve even figured out that if you press the trigger down, you can install a 1x1 round plate with hollow stud, disabling the shooting function.

My first day of having the correct item in the right slot!

Because nothing quite says Merry Christmas than a heavy machine gun :)

My son really likes it. He knew it was going to be in the calendar from the photo and was looking forward to it. It is a nice little build, looks fun, and at least is not the dreaded blaster rack everyone was expecting.

I'm sure that's still coming ;)

By in United States,

I'm putting this here as well as day 2 because it's the most current - I got the wrong gift on day 2 and couldn't check myself because the Star Wars calendar is the only one for which there are no "instructions".

Anyway, I contacted Lego customer service and they're sending me the correct gift for day 2 without my having to check each door, so this is for others who I know had the same problem.

Thumbs up, Lego!

Being from the UK, I’d think you’d be familiar with Father Christmas by The Kinks. But I believe it’s “have a machine gun”.

@bgruner:
Huh. I thought only calendars sold in the UK got mixed up contents.

I thought @ecleme11 was alluding to Die Hard but now going to have a look for that Kinks song. At least today wasn’t a weapons rack and while I have stopped picking these calendars up I am really enjoying these daily reveals and the reviews, many thanks @CapnRex101

You are free to use any methods necessary to build this but but I want it built. No disintegrations!

Ha, ha-very good.

By in United States,

@PurpleDave regarding your reply to my comment on yesterday's post. I believe the "regular stormies" you mentioned were, in fact, members of elite combat units, despite appearing no different from typical troopers. The guys who boarded the Tantive IV were presumably members of the 501st Legion, aka Vader's Fist; the same undoubtedly applies to the Cloud City forces as they were in company with Vader. The forces on Endor were part of a "legion of [Palpatine's] best troops". Units directly under the two Sith rulers undoubtedly only got there by being the best, and that includes being able to shoot straight.

I think it’s pretty sweet, all things considered, though in all honesty I actually wouldn’t have minded a weapons rack at all, so perhaps I’m simply a more forgiving builder than some folks here.

I take it you are referring tot that easy-to-remove-or-leave-off-if-you-so-please part that many kids, for whom this set is mainly intended, will thoroughly enjoy?

I agree, it's the dumbest thing ever!

@SearchlightRG:
But that’s such a boring solution compared to being stricken by gravity sickness every time they end up in anything spherical, like a planet. Or an entire space station full of themselves.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@PurpleDave Boring, maybe, but logical. After all, these guys have canonically had space travel for millennia-you really think they don't have a means of dealing with gravity sickness?

By in United States,

@SearchlightRG:
Sure they have a way of dealing with it. Call up any elite unit in the area when something really needs shooting, even if that means letting a bunch of Sewer Troopers walk on the new carpeting. I mean, an entire garrison of regular Stormies hanging out in a room together in Ep4 couldn’t manage to even graze _ONE_GUY_, who wasn’t even shooting back? Gravity sickness.

They had orders from Vader to let the Rebels escape, you wanna be the guy who accidently kills one of them? :)

By in Norway,

This E-Web looks better than the huge ones in the recent Hoth sets! Could be the best one they've done.

" XD I just wish they would stop adding them, cause they make the set more expensive because of the piece count. Nice joke btw XD "
Glad you got the intended humor in my comment and I understand how you feel,
but I don't think its inclusion here affects the price of the whole AC; prices of sets are invariably pre-determined. Yes, maybe some other somewhat useful piece could have taken its place, but the calendars (and most sets in general) are still primarily for kids, even if a designer sometimes includes certain items to cater to 'FOL's wishes…

Anyway; just be glad the minifigure/'battle' packs no longer have stud shooters in them.
As a result, their prices should now drop significantly… no?

The command crew had orders to let the Falcon escape. We don’t know that any such orders trickled down to the rank-and-file troopers by the time Han had his encounter, or that it extended to every individual. Probably Leia was singled out, because Vader would have assumed she knew where the Rebel base was located. There was also no way to know from the start that this tramp freighter had anything to do with Leia when they scooped it up, so no plan was probably formulated until after they broke her out of the detention center. Unless you broadcast your plot over the PA system to the entire population of the station (including any of the named heroes), it would take time to get that info spread around. It probably would have had to go through proper channels, which means some dingus officer is going to second-guess the orders and try to show how off by doing exactly what he’s been told not to do, just like Ozzel did.
