Spice Girls BrickHeadz revealed!
Posted by Huw,
A picture of a forthcoming BrickHeadz set featuring the pop group Spice Girls, who shot to fame in 1996 with their debut single Wannabe, has been revealed at LEGO's instructions portal.
40548 Spice Girls Tribute contains all five of the girls, Baby, Scary, Sporty, Ginger, and Posh, attired in typical outfits.
These are the first BrickHeadz of real people, as opposed to film characters, and I guess the set has been made to mark the group's 25th anniversary last year. It's certainly among the more unusual properties that LEGO has licensed!
Following backlash over my views about Elvis, I will state that I actually quite like the Spice Girls.
Will you Spice Up Your Life by buying these, or Stop before you get to the LEGO store?

I know a couple of massive Spice Girls fans who would absolutely LOVE this set when I tell them about it!

You doing alright there bud? It's just a bunch of toys and plastic bricks. Don't like 'm, don't buy 'm.
I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want...
...no more brickheadz. They're as bad as those ugly pop vinyl head things. Its an easy pass for me.
Oh, I'm all for this!

Flouncer-one-niner, flouncer-one-niner, you are clear for take off.
I have to admit this is probably one the greatest - but completely random - Lego set ever.
Having been at Uni during the height of their popularity we had a poster on the wall with some comments written on it that would be considered very inappropriate nowadays (and probably weren't very clever back then) and, whatever you think of their music, they were a massive cultural phenomenon.
I am really tempted to get them, though I would place both microphones in front of Sporty, as she was the only one with a decent voice.

Thank You, this is one of my favorite comments to date, Great job.
Metallica had their 40th anniversary last year, so will we get BrickHeadz of them, too? Of Freddie Mercury who died 30 years ago last year? Abba next year, or even on time this year? I mean, it's hard to imagine (at least to me) that they'd choose the Spice Girls for a one-off BrickHeadz band release...
Drummer: b-doom psssh.
Huw: I’m here all week. Try the veal.
Me: noice.
What a... choice. Not an objectionable one necessarily, but certainly thoroughly bizarre.
Lego are trying to diversify their portfolio and SHOCK HORROR try to lure new customers their way. They don’t do that with Black Falcons.
Once again they forgot Drax. Would have been a wonderful addition to the band. :/
This is just weird. Beside the depiction of real people... why the spice girls? In what way are they possibly relevant in the year 2022, let alone relevant enough to be the first pop group to be depicted as Brickheadz? And the weirdness of having this many Brickheadz in one set. What's next, the Backstreet Boys? NSYNC? The Venga Boys?
I'm not knocking on fans of the Spice Girls here. Just... why, lego?
Wait, I know why. Is this because Vidyeo flopped and they still have a contract with Universal Music? Brickheadz is one of the faster things to produce, so maybe this one was rushed as soon as the numbers for Vidyeo arrived? Such a broader license might also explain the Elvis art set.
But still... out of all musicians they picked the Spice Girls. Maybe more are on the way and this just happened to be the first that leaked.
Great design, all five are instantly recognisable!

Its a plastic toy, get a grip. Do you need an airport to announce your departure?
As far as I can tell, the first time LEGO brings real people to the Brickheadz line.
I don't care much about Brickheadz (boring, repetitive builds imo, and very little display value), but I had a good laugh when I saw this. :D Spice up your Bricks! ;)
Not for me, that's for sure. But I think this group nicely illustrates @Huw's point about hair & Brickheadz. Each figure is distinctive and clearly recognisable as a result.
I also suggest that Baby, Ginger, Sporty, Scary & Posh were as much characters as real people.

Because they think people will buy it ¯\_(?)_/¯ - the same reason they started to make Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Disney, Seinfeld, Friends, Home Alone, etc. sets. If you don't care about it, just don't buy it. ;-)
Is it 1 April already?
I'm not particularly a fan of the Spice Girls or BrickHeadz, but what a great set! The Spice Girls were a worldwide phenomenon and I can easily see why LEGO chose them for this set. All five members have their own distinctive style, which is perfect for the BrickHeadz style; as @MrClassic said, all five are instantly recognisible. I imagine a set of BrickHeadz Beatles would be very dull in comparison. I think this will be a hugely popular set.

Just to balance it out, I think it is one of the silliest comments to date.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
I'm going to take two of the models and turn them into one giant Spice Girl. I will call the project "2 become 1"

Don't worry, there's 0% chance I would ever buy this with my limited budget and space. And I don't hold anything against it existing or anything. I was just wondering if this would even sell. But judging from the comments there might be plenty of old fans of them apparently. Never thought something like it would still be popular enough to sell.
And there we have the first Brickheadz I'm not adding to the collection. If they do a music band themed Brickheadz why not pick Huey Lewis & the News. Cuz you know, it's hip to be square.
The best part about this release are the printed tiles.

I really, really don't understand this kind of comments. LEGO released 932 sets last year, spread over 32 themes. Chances are you are not going to like them all, no? Not everything LEGO does has to cater to someone's specific niche. The variety of sets has never been bigger, the attention to AFOL collectors is only expanding. Even if you are only interested in X amount of themes, it's very ikely you are still better served now than you were 5-10 years ago.
Me and my wallet are incredibly glad that I'm only interested in a minority of the themes and sets that LEGO produces, and even that is too much to keep up with.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.

My money's on So Solid Crew.
Spot on except for Posh. She looks scary. I though Brickheadz would be a two year thing. But it is a perfect €10 gift and the possibilities are endless. The brick equivalent of Funko POP!
What’s next, the Beatles, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie, The Stones?
I think it's just a shame they couldn't have released them as minifigures first! The Spice Girls personas could easily lend them to a set of five different small scenes that could appeal to both big and little girls.
I really love the Spice Girls but I don't like BrickHeadz, especially the use of tan (Brick Yellow) instead of Light Nougat. Baby, Sporty and Posh don't look very interesting without prints either.
Instantly recognizable.
I guess it still hasn’t sunk in to some Brickset commenters that not every set is tailor made for their personal tastes, and Lego is also trying to bring in a range of new fans that may not be as involved in the brick as we are.

Patrick and Sean Bateman double pack anyone?
Given the format, I think these are really well designed and instantly recognisable. They're about as 'accurate' as BrickHeadz can be (except for Posh having a mic).
I know David Beckham is a massive Lego fan so
a) I wonder if he had anything to do with this.....probably not but fun to think he might have.

I'm still upset that Go Brick Me had a pitiful six-MONTH run. It should've been six YEARS, it's practically a LEGO Classic box in the BrickHeadz theme. Hard to believe the wedding BrickHeadz have outlasted it.

As someone mentioned above when I first saw this I thought it was an April 1st gag. I’ve got nothing against the spice girls, and actually don’t mind the band but these look horrible.
Also I wonder if there is much crossover between spice girl fans and lego/brickheadz fabs
Are these 18+ ???
Interesting choice, I do hope they make more bands. It does smell a bit Funko Pop to me, but they are testing the waters perhaps with this iconic pop group.
Now give me SLAYER!

I'd go nuts for a BrickHeadz version of that band, no question!
That Britisch flag piece will come in handy for my EDDY "THE TROOPER" Moc i am planning to build...
It does seem a bizarre choice with no other context but the five look great as Brickheadz.
Uhh… Spice Girls get Brickheadz before The Beatles? Rolling Stones? Queen? Hans Zimmer?
What a world we live in. I won’t get these, but I like them.
Yes, yes, yes! It shouldn't work but there's something about this set that is pure kitsch pop art and I LOVE it. The combination of the Spice Girls characters and Brickheadz works amazingly. I don't do Star Wars, Technic or Marvel so this is right up my alley. Yes it's a bit Funko Pops but Brickheadz always have been - I've just never noticed til now.
Absolute Day 1 purchase for me.
Missed a trick ion not making "Posh" two bricks wide.
Union Flag tiles (i assume not stickers as in Go Brick me?) ideal for a BH Lester
The Spice Girls were popular, very popular, and culturally, I get that, good job. I'm happy for you if you love them, but IMO "their" manufactured "music" was terrible ear poison... So I'm not especially interested in this set...
I'm sure LEGO have (n't got) sets waiting in the wings that depict (in no particular order); Marvin Gaye, Mozart, Bob Marley, AC/DC, Public Enemy, Metallica, The Beatles, Sex Pistols, Pink Floyd, Howlin' Wolf, Queen, Elton John, Madness, Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Frank Sinatra, the obvious and now contentious Elvis, John Williams, The Rolling Stones, Ella Fitzgerald, Radiohead, U2, R.E.M., The Police... and/or [insert your favourite band here].
...I realise some of those won't fit brand ideals and with a bit more thought I could have probably suggested many more deserving acts and still, I probably wouldn't ever have got to The Spice Girls. I'd have suggested Spinal Tap or Bill & Ted before ever thinking of them, YMMV.
Sure, why not? SNOT bricks, plates, bows, prints, tiles... Not as much variety of skin tone as 41597 or 40383, but if the price per part is low enough, I'll buy a few.
Spice Girl brickheadz, how awesome is that. Brickheadz I think are one of the best themes in the Lego range.
There cheap, good quick interesting builds and have a good variety.
Just need a brick built bottle of Smirnoff Ice and hooch to complete it....
If the tiles are printed then I can justify an unnecessary purchase and my wife will build them with joy.
Printed Union Jack tiles? I might buy this and build tribute MOC Brickheadz of The Goodies!
Vale Timbo...
Am I a fan--no. Well done, however.
Is this what LEGO should've done with the Universal Music license/partnership to begin with instead of the costly and disappointing Vidyo? Along with minifigures, yes.
Given Knex did KISS years ago, Funko's music related Pops have sold well, and how lately there have been a ton of band mascots in action figure form, LEGO should've started doing more than just the Beatles back when the Yellow Submarine set was released nearly six years ago.
Woah, unexpected but I like it. Hope they do more.
I guess it's too late to get Daft Punk thought.

As far as interesting builds, Elvis is an obvious one because of the hair. Radiohead might be interesting, it’d be quite difficult to make Jonny Greenwood’s hair look right as a BrickHeadz. Personally I’d love to see Talking Heads, David Byrne in the Big Suit seems ideal for this style.

Whether anyone buys them or not, I'm not even sure I care whether it's a real set or not; I just think that picture of all five is absolutely hilarious!
I'm shocked that Lego disregarded their biggest fans yet again. Do the Spice girls even play with Lego? er build with lego? What about Ed Sheeran? A lego superfan that would definitely welcome a brickheadz figure after him? Ok they did a great job with this... maybe this is replacing the failed Video line?
This will sell a bunch to groups that’s wouldn’t normally buy Lego.
Some commentators think every Lego product should be designed for them. Lego doing the opposite is how they’ve become such an incredible brand.
These will sit on the shelf, right next to the Queer Eye, Seinfeld, all the other pop culture that Lego is 15 years too late for.
I'm holding for the 18+ Brickheadz Slipknot nine-pack
Hope the Union Jack will be available on PaB.
I like them, but likely not for MSRP.
Will I be buying these? No. But I also won’t be buying the new McLaren car everyone else seems excited for and you don’t see me making comments like some of the ones in here.
Is it because they’re a girl band that people seem so offended? Is it really so simple as “eugh you’re getting girl power in my boys toy!” that people seem to be reacting so viscerally?
I love these! Definitely getting them. Anything that gets my fiancee deeper into the Lego vortex is a good thing in my book.
TLG has officially taken a left into bizarre world!
I don't have anything to add about the set. I just really don't appreciate the note that it's the 25th anniversary of the Spice Girls, because that's a depressing reminder of how old I am!

Yes, even 'Baby Spice', Emma Bunton, is 46 (as is 'Scary Spice', Mel B). The oldest is 'Ginger Spice', Geri Halliwell, who is approaching 50.
You would think they'd do the Spice Girls as an art set like the Beatles or Elvis. Interesting.

Guess it's a question of rights and the price for them. For Beatles or Stones, they'd have to pay maybe ten times more.
What are they trying to say with only 2 microphones?
@drewtstew said:

Queer Eye is literally on television right now. New series are being produced. Seinfeld is not new, but it's iconic, at least in America. I mean, Friends ended in 2004 and it was one of the bestselling products of 2019, so newness of the property and success of the LEGO set are not always directly correlated.
@Duq said:

They all have microphones. Baby and Posh have them on stands, Scary and Ginger are holding theirs, and Sporty has a headset mic.

The designer is Daniel Squirrell, not Matthew Ashton.

In fairness, while not Brickheadz specifically, there have in fact already been a couple official LEGO sets featuring the Beatles.
I could actually see them doing Brickheadz or Art sets of the Stones and/or Queen, given other things they’ve done in recent years. Hans Zimmer might be a stretch (though if they were going to start doing film composers, John Williams would be an obvious starting point, given his immense popularity, not to mention his having scored so many things that have themselves been represented in LEGO).
I might be a 90s kid, but this stuff I do not want. We want the return of Classic Space!
"WHY IS LEGO BRINGING SOMETHING NEW AND NOT BRINGING BACK CASTLE SPACE PIRATES???????????????? WAHHHHHHHH"
Surprising, but most surprising is people overracting and even saying that are giving up on Lego because of this, lmao. Brickheadz is literally Lego's Funko Pop now, it was a matter of time they started doing real-life musicians too. If y'all are so angry and tired of Lego because of this, I'm gladly accepting all of your collections. :)
And there's also the "uhhhh where's mah rock?????" people. Man, Lego has made two Beatles sets, there's one Elvis set soon and they are angry with just one Pop-related set. I'm much more of a rock fan, but I thought these complaints about rock supposedly not getting attention were already in the past. Give it just a few months more and we'll see classic rock bands too, come on.
Saying this, once again, very surprising. Not of my interest, but excellent set for the fans of the group who probably never expected such day would come, but it happened for them.
Aww sweet, my time machine worked, i've successfully gone back to 1997!
It's not for me and that is okay. I'd like it if we see a diverse range of musicians and other famous faces following on from it though.
Tbh, I could live the rest of my life and never hear the spice girls again and I would be really okay with that.

"This is what LEGO spends their time on.
LEGO quality is garbage. Has been really bad the last few years, several years for minifigure printing as the price goes up and up.
Things like this take up time and the bricks need to be made. Instead of making 750 sets a year LEGO needs to cut back to get their quality control back. Instead they continue to rush out random stuff. That makes all bricks decline in quality.
Instead of thinking and researching about things, like the PaB and P&B so called merger, Vidiyo and so on LEGO does this. Again, it's all about LEGO has stretched itself way too thin and this is another example of it."
This would've been so much better to start with then a tantrum and a non-sequitur about gender quotas...
Seems interesting and who wouldn't want to be in LEGO these days.

one here! i just played my Spice World dvd a couple of weeks ago (RIP meat loaf the bus driver)
Hopefully this leads to some Spice World movie based sets. Really hoping for a Roger Moore minifigure
But why?
I did enjoy the Spice Girls in the mid-late 90s. And Spice World was actually a pretty funny movie. Plus Meatloaf was in it!
But I won't be buying these. I don't particularly care about Brickheadz. But if they were minifigures, I'd snatch them up immediately.
I won't buy it (don't care about Brickheadz or Spice Girls) - but I think Lego designers have done a good job on this set : it has a certain charm.

You signed up last month to tell us how much you don’t like new sets- do we know you by a different name?
I like how Sporty and Posh are the most boring, just like in real life.
Here's a relevant quote from the comments of Matthew Ashton's Instagram post about the set. This comment is Matthew Ashton replying to brotherfromanotherbricks:
matthew__ashton

@brotherfromanotherbricks I didn’t actually design this set, but I may have nudged someone into making it happen ;)
Here's the post, if I can make the link work:
https://www.instagram.com/p/CZzXcRbsslF/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet
So the thought expressed upthread that this set is happening at least partly at the behest of Matthew Ashton seems to be correct, though of course the conclusions you draw from that are up to you.
It’s cool LEGO chose that really brief time when Posh stepped out of the group and Professor Snape was tapped to fill in.
They should have made BrickHeadz for They Might Be Giants to appeal to BOTH the kids (current TMBG) and adults (90s TMBG).
Well I'll say this ... if Lego is keeping music an option and BrickHeadz are still going strong, perhaps we'll stumble upon the timeline where they make a blocky version of Will Ramos from Lorna Shore. Add QR codes for "To The Hellfire" and "Of The Abyss" and boom, perfection!
Anything's possible these days.
Love the Spice Girls but don’t like BrickHeadz really.
This is so not for me, but hey, I get to save for the things that actually interest me :)
Either way, the Spice must flow!
