Spice Girls BrickHeadz officially revealed!
Posted by Huw,
Here's the press release for the Spice Girls set that was, presumably, prematurely revealed earlier today:
40548 Spice Girls Tribute
Rated 16+, 578 pieces, £44.99
Available from 1st March at LEGO.com
Five of the most recognised figures in showbiz history have burst onto the stage in LEGO brick form for the first time ever, as the LEGO Group unveils the LEGO BrickHeadz Spice Girls Tribute set. This is a world first as actual people have never been immortalised in the LEGO BrickHeadz style before now.
In celebration of the new LEGO set, world-renowned photographer Rankin has brought the brick band to life, recreating images originally shot in Rankin’s studio that made the girls so recognisable around the world, this time featuring the LEGO BrickHeadz quintet.
In 1996, Emma, Geri, Mel B, Melanie C and Victoria exploded onto the British music scene before taking over the world with hits such as Wannabe, Two Become One, Viva Forever and Spice up Your Life. Now the band can be built in LEGO bricks, giving fans the chance to add a little People Power to their homes.
The new LEGO BrickHeadz set comes with mini versions of each Spice Girl, equipped with microphones and stands. For the first time, fans can experience that satisfying ‘click’ when two bricks become one. Every detail that gave the girls their iconic style has been faithfully captured in brick, from hairstyles to clothing. Fans will find new leopard print LEGO bricks for Mel B’s eye-catching look, along with Melanie C’s tracksuit and Emma’s famous baby pink dress, whilst Victoria can be found in her trademark black dress.
Of course, the set would not be complete without Geri’s Union Jack dress. LEGO designers have carefully recreated the famous dress, which became a lasting symbol of Cool Britannia and made headlines across the world following the performance of ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ at the Brit Awards 25 years ago.
Talking about how he brought the band to LEGO life, LEGO designer Daniel Squirrell commented: “There are few bands that defined pop culture in the same way the Spice Girls did back in the 1990s, and it’s been such fun bringing the band to life in our BrickHeadz style.”
“This is the first time we have created a music band in BrickHeadz form and what we really, really wanted was to capture the essence and nostalgia of the Spice Girls, through their iconic looks. I am delighted with the set and I hope the fans are too.”
The LEGO BrickHeadz Spice Girls set will be available from LEGO stores and on LEGO.com from 1st March 2022. Spice Girls fans can also get their hands on a signed set by entering a sweepstake on LEGO VIP from 1st March.
Spice Girls fans who wannabe amongst the first to get their hands on the new LEGO BrickHeadz can spice up their lives at the LEGO BrickHeadz Spice Girls Celebration Weekend in London. Taking place at the LEGO Store Leicester Square on 5th and 6th March, fans will get the chance to star in their own magazine front cover, meet the LEGO Spice Girls BrickHeadz in their own individual worlds and dance along to some of the Spice Girls much-loved hits.

Well, that was unexpected.
5 brickheadz in a set for the price of 5 separate brickheadz. This should have been a €40 set
It's certainly a set that links in to the zeitgeist!
The copy is actually good for once!

Only because we edited it. Take a look at other sites for the original!

Ah, shoot.

The brickheadz dual packs are the price of two, why should this be cheaper than the price of 5?
Just noticed one of them uses 2 1x1s and a 1x2 instead of a 1x4 on the face where the eyes are?
So help me. I can't wait to pick this up.
Advance summary of Brickheadz comments:
Set of AFOLS A: "I hate it. Make things *I* like."
Set of AFOLS B: "I love it. Day 1 purchase. I'm marrying the Sporty figure."
Set of AFOLS C: "I hate any and all Brickheadz."
Set of AFOLS D: "I have no opinion and came here to comment as such."
Miscellaneous: Various people in Groups A and B arguing with each other.
I hope this rapid summary saves you a few hours of productivity.
£50 did give me a WHAT moment but then I did remember they would be £10 each. Its the odd thing that £10 for 1 seems much more reasonable. But given that there are only a couple of prints I think it should have been £40 max.
Unrelatedly, I feel like a few modifications to Scary Spice would effectively turn her into Professor Snape.
And some people here worrying that Lego cannot/would not do some themes because the movie/show is already too old?!?!?!? In what decades were the Spice Girls a thing? Answer: the 90s: 1994-2000. That said, if Lego start doing tributes, all wishes are now possible...(even Classic Space - a tribute or Studded Technic - a tribute or Monorail - a tribute)
Not as simple as Eleven from Stranger Things but close. Happy for the fans of either Spice Girls and/or BrickHeadz.

Parts availability; most likely the 1x4 modified plate with 2 studs is not being made at the moment (or hasn't even been made at all -yet-) in that color

UK prices are 1 £9.99, 2 £17.99, 3 £21.99. US 1 $9.99, 2 $19.99, 3 $24.99 so agree it should be cheaper but some of the usual price differences are at play
Funny how Victoria is so bland... Like in real life.
All others are really cool.

Also a great summary of why I don't identify as an AFOL! I remember when I first learned about LUGNET and AFOLs twenty years ago, and I thought they were this cool bunch of grown-ups who loved LEGO and had really advanced, thought-provoking, grown-up conversations about it. I mean, those do exist, and I'm honored to have those conversations with them. But I never would have expected... well, 70% of Brickset comments.
So we loose one music theme, and they inflict this on us instead ! - can see this set getting deeply discounted.
Wait a minute there’s five of them?!!
Interesting that it's explicitly called a tribute and that I don't see any licensing mentioned anywhere at the Lego site. I guess this is similar to the Women of NASA set 21312 where they don't need explicit approval for likeness.
What's next? Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson?

I identify mostly with D, mainly because BrickHeadz aren't my thing.
Seems kind of random. It's not for me, but I don't mind Lego making it for those that may want it.
Some AFOLS are gonna use this to back up literally any tie-in now, huh?
“Sorry, but there isn’t a market for that right now.”
“Remember when you made Spice Girls BrickHeadz?”
This was a joke ;) I think they look pretty good, actually, though I’m personally not going to pick them up.

I must be out of the loop... but nobody has cared about the Spice Girls in 20 years... right?
Like surely there has to be more enduring and impactful bands or music artists out there... than that band which made 1 song you remember just the chorus to and broke up after only six years, right?

I need a Futurama Neutral Brickhead who says "I HAVE NO STRONG FEELINGS ONE WAY OR THE OTHER."
Also, Futurama Brickheadz would be neat. Except Leela, who might require a brand-new 1x4 plate with one stud in the middle, and it'd still look really weird.
@SaintJ said:

Yes. But we need a three-pack of Rock, Movie, and Vegas Elvis, and a two-pack of early 80s and late 90s Michael.

I seem to remember that one of the proposed "Women of NASA" (Katherine Johnson) wasn't included in the actual set because she and/or her family didn't give their approval. So either LEGO was just being polite in respecting her wishes, or they actually do have to get approval to use someone's likeness (which makes sense, because LEGO is making money with it).
I'm sure the Spice Girls and their record label won't be getting poorer from the sales of this set.

Speculation: although not raunchy, "Two Become One" is definitely an unambiguously sexually explicit song. Other than that, beats me.
At first - admittedly very quick - glance, I thought Posh was a young Severus Snape…

@SaintJ said:

Didn't we already get him in 41597, you get to pick his skin colour depending on the era you want and it also has no nose!
LEGO is leaning WAY deep into the pop culture memorabilia market. I feel like when they started doing Star Wars play sets, it was a natural extension of their brand, they just happened to be licensed. Something about this feels different and weird to me.

Home Alone was released in 1990, a few years before the Spice Girls formed. The Beatles broke up in 1970. “Steamboat Willie” was released in 1928. 1928! And all of these have had LEGO sets.
“Five of the most recognised figures in showbiz history”
Yeah I think LEGO blew their hyperbole budget for the year on this one.

You missed the group like me that have no opinion on the topic of the set, but will get it because I collect Brickheadz and am a completionist lol. I know there is a sport spice, can't remember the others names and only recall the Tell Me What You want song, and I was in my early to mid 20's when they where big lol. Am so out of the cultural loop, even more so now then when I was young enough to be the target audience for their music :P
I think they are all pretty cool and actually look like who they are supposed to - if I was one of the Spice Girls I would certainly be happy with my Lego self, put it that way. Like them or not, for somebody my age (nearly 50) they were a huge part of culture from 1996 onwards and I even bought 'Who Do You Think You Are on CD single at the time (and still have it here!) - having said that £50 could be better spent on other clutter but if it is discounted in due course I can actually see me getting this...
1999 called, they want their Johnny Thunder sets back.
Since LEGO is doing bands now, can we please get a Queen set?

Hey, we got Johnny Thunder in a 2014 Lego Movie set, and a very obvious Thunder homage in a CMF not too long ago.
Daniel Squirrell sounds like the alter ego of a villain that Batman fought in one issue of the comic from like 1987.

Surprised to see no one has yet pointed out this, um, peculiar way of describing a certain building technique in this press release: "LEGO designers have carefully recreated the famous dress"... They know they're literally talking about two (or actually one, they're mirrored but identical) tiles with a new union jack print, right? That's made for this set exclusively and is pretty much the most straightforward way of doing it? *claps*
Well, it is a good way to grow beyond the stereotpical skinny girl :P

A couple of years ago I would never have expected 70% of LEGO's current product output!
It's part of what drove me into a second Dark Ages tbh.
As for BrickHeadz, to me most of them look somewhat like this:

LEGO's age ratings aren't about age appropriateness, or even build difficulty (mostly). They're primarily a marketing strategy. LEGO doesn't want Spice Girls fans to feel embarrassed buying a set that says it's for kids.
Although I agree that harmless marketing isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you see "16+".
I’m all in for these.
I do wish they’d do more BH for Star Wars though…and I mean a lot more.
Sugggesting spice girl characters are different from other acting jobs is a little weird…

In the sense that you don’t get why LEGO is offering a set of this group, or that you don’t get why the group is popular in the first place?
If the latter, okay, but if the former, the Spice Girls are one of the most popular groups in history. This should clarify things a bit:

The point was more that the original Star Wars playsets seemed like an extension of sets like Classic Space, and therefore on-brand. I say this as someone who wasn't alive when Classic Space was around, nor when LEGO Star Wars debuted. LEGO now, appears to be dipping their feet into this "Nerd Crew"-esque pop-culture, celebrity culture, nostalgia-bait circle jerk which rubs me the wrong way.

Steamboat Willie launched a character that remains a pop culture icon and mascot of a multibillion dollar corporation that also owns Star Wars and Marvel two big heavyweights of Lego licenses right now, and well... I guess they play Home Alone on reruns on cable TV during Christmas.
I can't tell you the last time I ever thought about the Spice Girls... at all until today. Admittedly my musical tastes skew towards a completely different genre (Queen, Rush, The Killers, The Black Keys/Dan Auerbach, The War on Drugs, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Elton John, U2, RHCP, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Seger, ELO, etc...) so maybe I should really just claim ignorance here. But I would have assumed that if Lego wanted a pop singer with enough clout to sell Brickheads that somebody like, IDK... Taylor Swift would have created a bigger splash.
I like the brickheadz. I'm hoping this means they will start doing more and it becomes the LEGO version of Funko Pop. I'd much rather spend $10 a piece on these and collect them all instead of on a bobble head.

Well, me personally, I love this new direction
At first I did think this sounded like an April Fool joke. But Brickheadz are about pop culture and the Spice Girls are definitely that. I expect the crossover between AFOLs and Spice Girls fans is vanishingly small, which is why Brickset readers are probably not best placed to how well this will sell.
Ultimately LEGO is not bound to only make products that appeal to AFOLs (that would be a weird business decision when they can sell stuff to more casual buyers of their products too).

Well, perhaps all of that is why those other sets happened before this one. That said, you might want to check out the link I offered in another post (or here, I’ll just post it again: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_girl_groups ). The Spice Girls may not be at the absolute zenith of their popularity, but they’re still massively successful, and beloved to this day by no small number of people. I’ve never bought an album of theirs myself, but I recognize that many, many, many people have.
And keep in mind this is a single Brickheadz set. It’s not as though TLG is doing an entire massive theme and predicating the next twelve years of their global strategy on its success or anything. One set, that’s all, out of hundreds they’ll offer this year alone.

I never thought of the assembly of bricks as sexual before. That’s really disturbing. I need to purge that idea from my head.
I’m not familiar with Spice Girls, is there any reason for the 16+? Are they finally learning that the 18+ label just doesn’t work?

That would be good - Queen although formed in '71 had released their first Single and Album in '73 so next year would be 50 years... You would have to have enough parts so that you could have the standard line up - but also the "I want to break free" line up (unless it would offend the Americans again!)
I notice that Posh hasn't got one in the box picture. But I wasn't going to say anything about that...
They are iconic - even if they aren't around or as popular - they still have their place in history - with "Girl Power" and at the moment the ratio of Male : Female brickheadz is 3 : 1....!
I'd buy a set like this if they made bands I actually liked- RHCP anyone?
Next: Queen or perhaps Motörhead? :)

I would have preferred a Beatles pack first? or Queen? maybe Hans Zimmer?
Then again, I'm not very familiar with the Spice Girls, although I think they did a good job here. That Union Jack in particular will work great for a custom Rose Tyler.
This is going to be big news in 1997.

But the wife says we’re getting them anyway.
release of this set further makes me believe that Lego controls all the leaks. every single set that is Star wars or Jurassic Park or marvel usually has some kind of indication it's coming in the pipeline and we see pictures a few weeks before they come out. but no one had any idea of this one at all. this makes you wonder if Lego really truly is controlling the leaks
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want…
Well, as you asked, I’d like a BrickHeadz set of J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky. Not much chance of getting that but I can dream.
Wild... was NOT expecting that one!

As interesting as that would be, I highly doubt that LEGO would be too keen on the band behind Blood Sugar Sex Magik as a licensing partner

MJ probably not. Beatles, yes. And heck let's do the Bee Gees too."
Bee Gees, Bowie, or Queen would be good, maybe even Lady Gaga. Anyone have any other ideas or recommendations?
I wonder if David Beckham had any part in getting this done… if you’re on here lurking David: Bravo!
Those faces look bland and expressionless, but at least the Brickheads do a good job of capturing that.
I will never like brickheadz, regardless of who or what gets licensed for the theme. Interesting and iconic characters are reduced to lifeless, boring statues.
It’s obvious the next one will be BTS
@ResIpsaLoquitur:
Set of AFOLs E: We need to introduce @Huw to some better music. I don’t expect many here will have heard of them yet, but maybe some Soraia? Zouzou Mansour has an absolutely phenomenal voice, and I’m pretty sure it goes to at least 11.
@Tc99m:
Johnson had just recently been featured as the main character in Hidden Figures, which I suspect had a lot to do with her getting cut from the Ideas set. With her name tied to a film that was generating Oscar buzz, her family may well have pushed for a much bigger slice of the pie than TLG was willing to give up.
@Blondie_Wan:
There was a time when eight of the top ten grossing movies had George Lucas’ and/or Steven Spielberg’s names attached. The other two were 1989 Batman and Home Alone, the latter of which still ranks as the top grossing Christmas movie.
The Beatles still hold the record for most No1 singles, and would have had more of their songs weren’t constantly being kept out of the top spot by songs from some band called The Beatles. They also still hold the record for most records sold, and I’d venture that even their least popular album currently outsells the entire Spice Girls’ discography.
And Steamboat Willie owns 40% of Hollywood.

It wasn’t leopard print, but he did have that fur stole on that one time he went in drag.

I’m aware. I actually used to take an excessive interest in the box-office records back in my youth in the ‘80s, when Lucas and Spielberg had a nearly unassailable grip on them. And I’ve no doubt about the lads from Liverpool - I have quite a few Beatles albums myself, and not one by the Spice Girls (not that I hate them or anything). I actually even had Beatles posters up on my bedroom wall. I’m fully aware of the Beatles’ extraordinary success and acclaim, and yes, that it overshadows that of the Spice Girls (and virtually every other act ever). That hardly means the Spice Girls are complete unknowns or something. Within the particular niche known as “girl groups”, they’re apparently still the top act ever, more than two decades since they debuted. I think there’s room in LEGO’s catalog for one measly SG set if they want to do it; it’ll hardly detract from their ability to produce more Beatles sets if they choose (note they’ve already made two, with a combined MSRP three or four times what this one has, and just over six times the piece count).
I’m just saying this choice isn’t completely out of left field. Note also that in the annals of famous popular music acts, SG may have an edge over not all but quite a few others of comparable levels of fame and popularity when it comes to being represented in this form, on the grounds that they have enough of a distinctive look that they’re still quite recognizable when given the Brickheadz treatment (at least, when all five are together, probably the reason they’re all one set). Plenty of others surely would as well, but many acts might not be, given that the format tends to obscure facial characteristics and distinguish characters by their hairstyles and fashion and so on. The Beatles could easily work in this treatment (perhaps in the Sgt. Pepper outfits), as could Prince, David Bowie, Tina Turner, and a number of others, but a lot of pop stars or other real people might not be immediately recognizable as Brickheadz.
I'm just confused LEGO didn't make Brickheadz for more popular musicians they already had the license for like Elvis or the Beatles.

"Or worse people are moaning that they don't make Brickheadz on film composers!?! Who makes action figures on (what are essentially) crew members?
"Why are they making Star Wars Brickheadz but not Brickheadz on the cinematographer?""
No one said anything like that. But I don't like when people try to gatekeep music because it's a soundtrack.

Parts availability; most likely the 1x4 modified plate with 2 studs is not being made at the moment (or hasn't even been made at all -yet-) in that color"
I think the absence of a modified 1x4 plate with 2 studs in dark nougat will still garner criticism within certain areas of the current day AFOL community though. I mean TLG can create bricks in new colours for other sets, but NOT for one specific piece and colour in this one?

I agree with this; given the potential BrickHeadz getting made in this skin tone — on top of what's already been produced — I just don't see why they couldn't prioritize this.

I would be interested to see how a Lego sock thing works...
How did Snape get in there? :-)
I suppose world-dominating Menudo is next?
That’s an interesting choice for this type of set - possibly gateway targeting a certain market? I would have thought the Beatles would have made it first as the license for the yellow Submarine showed the Band were viable for that sort of thing, and there are at least two Iconic looks that would be recognisable enough to persuade fans to buy more than one set off the bat.
I am surprised that they would pick, of all things, the Spice Girls to turn into BrickHeadz rather than some band or artist with a much broader appeal like The Beetles or Elvis or something.
I hope those leopardskin prints make it into Bricks and Pieces! And I really like the hairstyles, but I can't see myself buying this full set.
Come to think of it, I'm a bit surprised no one's done a set for the Beatles...or a "Brick Me" style one for the various ages of Elvis. If not a real set, then at least a MOC.

This is what I’ve been saying for years. Kids love Roger Deakins. They can’t get enough of Emmanuel Lubezki. Gregg Toland is a Gen Z idol.
