Viking Ship and the Midgard Serpent

©2022 LEGO Group

Hoth Bricks has uncovered the first image of 31132 Viking Ship in a Danish toy shop catalogue.

Like last year's 31120 Medieval Castle and 31109 Pirate Ship, it's a Creator set that resurrects a classic LEGO theme, in this case of course the much-loved but short-lived Vikings that yielded just seven sets during 2005 and 2006.

It'll be released on 1st June and priced 699DKK in Denmark.

Is that a Brick Built Midgard Serpent?!!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I last year bought the hull and sail of the “Viking Ship vs the Midgaard Serpent” set from 2005 (?) that this is clearly an homage to, then spent a while and a lot of effort Bricklinking the serpent, dragon head on the ship, all the other parts, and lots of Viking minifigs!
One of my favourite sets! Never ceases to draw comments!

By in United States,

That brick-built cow is very cool

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I'm getting Black Seas Barracuda vibes from that sail. Funny how they used the red and white stripes here and not in 31109.

Good to see that the viking helmet is back in production.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Brick-built sail. Cheaper than cloth I guess.

Brown string, though? That’s new.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Classic space when?! For crying out loud.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

History is a "theme" (or idea, or whatever) that I really think Lego could do more in. I'm excited for this in a way I never am for Creator generally, it's just a shame I'll have to sell my house to get enough Series 19 Vikings to man it.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

That sea-serpent is epic win, tho.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Vikings did not have horns on their helmets. LEGO (a Danish company) should know this...
Otherwise a cool set!

Wait for 2023? It's really hard to wait for any Space line with Star Wars already satisfying the crowds.

It even comes with Hugin and Munin, Odin's ravens

It’s not string, I don’t believe. I think it’s plastic, like in the Creator pirate ship.

Gravatar

Well that was unexpected! But very welcome! I was after the original for a loooong time.

They didn't have giant sea serpents either, I don't think historical accuracy is the aim here.

It's Creator 3-in-1, EVERYTHING is brick-built here.

Gravatar
By in Slovakia,

Danish normal retail price should be 899,95 DKK not 699,95 - 699,95 would be the reduced price. Here in Germany it will be 119,99 Euros

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh snap, that Jormungandr is pretty on par with the original it’s based on, not bad for a set that needs to be reusable

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Outstanding!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Add Muppet minifigs for the "In The Navy" number!
Kermit: "But first, meet the Vikings, those cruel, heartless, Scandinavian marauders whose savage brutality earned them the reputation 'worst human beings in history'"
Chef: "Ingish vorn der doon-der hroof" (Dong!)
Kermit: "Argh! Uh. I'm sorry about that! Ladies and gentlemen, the Vikings, those gentle, quaint, fun-loving old charmers..."

Isn't this a 3 in 1 set? Curious to see The alternative builds, and hoping for a longhouse.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Maybe this set resonates with the 76208 Goat Boat.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Perfection. Can’t wait to see more pictures.

Slightly worried about the price though.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

That "much-loved" Vikings theme sets were so much simpler in build and I believe much cheaper as a set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m excited for this and happy they included 4 mini figs since Creator sets seem to focus on the build and are light in figs (castle and pirate ship only had 3)

We had three different Creator space sets with classic space logo minfigures (even real airtank backpacks!) in the past few years, not counting that space shuttle even though the minifigure used the same torso. It's a shame, though, that they didn't continue with that concept; even 1 per year would make me happy!

A catalogue pic actually leaked a while back. The alternative builds look like a wolf and a cabin.

It's a Creator 3-in-1 set - there everything is brick built, also animals.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Honestly, classic space seems pretty inevitable as one of these big summer creator homage sets. You'll get it, I'm certain. What other classic themes might be on their list? We've now ticked off three big requests in three years, the non-space options are growing fewer in number for 2023/4.

For now though, I think I like this. At a distance it looks like it's smaller than it actually is when you look at the parts, if that makes sense? I did enjoy the pirate ship and the castle a lot, so this is a likely buy from me. The side build is fairly big, the animal side builds in the pirate ship and the castle were smaller. Through perhaps in hand, it will be apparent that the viking ship needed less of the budget to feel complete, and allowed for a fuller sea serpent.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely getting this one!
I'm so happy Creator is going back and making some Classic sets. I'm so tired of licensed themes. Hope to see some Classic Space somewhere down the line!

They keep doing this weird thing of releasing overlapping sets in the same year. The barracuda Bay set in the same year as the Creator pirate ship. The medieval blacksmith around the same time as the Creator castle. And now for his ship in the same year as this Viking ship. Maybe I'm remembering these wrong, it just feels that way to me.

Thematically the same but different price bands. The Goat Boat, for example, is £45. This 3-in-1 Creator Longship will be around £80 - £90, I reckon.

Gravatar

This looks amazing! For some reason I thought I remembered rumors of the Viking ship being $60. Maybe I am confusing it with the goat boat? This looks too large to be $60(the new rumoured price is either 100 or 120 U.S). Either way the set looks amazing!

Maybe you are confused with 7018
That was 60 Euro in the stores.
120 would be very epensive for this seeing the small size unless you value the 4th minifig very highly.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

I actually don't like that this is a "Creator" set. That is, I would prefer specialized parts, like sails, animals, shields and so on. I know some people like this "everything is brick built experience" but I would actually like to see new part (as well as old specialized parts) be used in a revamped set such as this one.
At first glance this sail doesn't look as bad as the Pirate ship one, I'll decide if I'm buying this when clearer images come out.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Yes! Love it, can't wait to see the official images. I'm sure the MOCers will go wild with combining multiple sets into 1 massive ship

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love the way they did the shields.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yay. Opera-Viking helmets.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I second @Hexx. This would be perfection with (1) cloth sails, (2) one piece cow (or non-brickbuilt). Just like the castle and the pirate ship would have been perfect with non-brickbuilt animals (brickbuilt dragon is fine, just like brickbuilt giant legendary sea serpent). Even the brickbuilt sail is a lesser issue and is acceptable. People(i.e. minifigs) are not brickbuilt, nor should the animals.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is really neat! One of my favorite details (at least from what I can see so far) is the two ravens situated above the sail—undoubtedly a reference to Odin's ravens Huginn and Muninn.

I think the string is just the brown colored cable element introduced in the bonsai tree (and included in grey in the t-rex breakout and Delorean) looks like it might be nougat in here though

Yeah, saw a blurry leaked pic awhile back.
The other two builds are a large/tall Viking lodge/cabin with smaller builds (couldn’t make out clearly, too blurry) and a large Fenris wolf with a big tree/terrain build.

Gravatar
By in United States,

*sigh*. You know what? I can work with it. I’ll hang the mother of all lampshades on it. There are lots of elements that will plug into the holes on those helmets…

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don’t usually get sets over $40 but this looks cool, our school’s mascot is a Viking and one administrator has the 2006 LEGO Viking sets in his office so he might take an interest in this. Even if I don’t get it, I probably have enough parts to try making something similar once the instructions are up— that’s the magic of Creator ships.

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

That's great news.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I missed out on the Vikings theme in my dark ages and am looking forward to this! The brick sails look much better than the recent 3-in-1 pirate ship, as others have kind of noted. The lack of visible studs helps immensely, and I . . . almost like this sail better than a cloth alternative. I'll also echo that the ravens look great. I also also appreciate that this will be released alongside the Goat Boat, similar to recent thematic overlaps, such as the Blacksmith and 3-in-1 Castle, and the 3-in-1 Pirate Ship and Barracuda Bay. Or does this mean that we have a large Ideas ship coming?!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks really cool. It's kinda funny that we went so long with nothing Viking-themed, only to get this and the Goat Boat the same year, but that's hardly a problem.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

The price will be 99 euro/usd with high probability. If you look on other set with the pricetag 899 DKK in Denmark and check the price for euro/usd you can see :)

When the Lego Movie came out, they released Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!! Copies sat unpurchased at my local toy stores for YEARS after, gathering dust. Even at the time the Bricklink resell price wasn't much over $100. It was the classic space's fan dream set, and nobody bought it. Just look at the aftermarket prices, they only really started picking up after 2020, for the first years after it came out the aftermarket prices weren't much higher than the retail price, indicating nobody really sought it out: https://www.brickeconomy.com/set/70816-1/the-lego-movie-bennys-spaceship-spaceship-spaceship

That set showed Lego a giant classic space set wouldn't sell. The IDEAS Exo Suit, another classic space set due to the green figures, came out a short time later, and the demand for that is STILL low. You can pick up a copy on the after market for a few dollars more than the original selling price

When the Lego Movie 2 came out, we got two classic space sets: That little Astronaut Battle Pack of sorts with the pink classic space suit, and a junior's one. The aftermarket prices are still close to their initial retail prices. The demand isn't there:

https://www.brickeconomy.com/set/70821-1/emmet-and-bennys-build-and-fix-workshop
https://www.brickeconomy.com/set/70841-1/the-lego-movie-2-the-second-part-bennys-space-squad

I am so sick of people moaning for "muh classik SPAAAACE" so often, because when Lego DOES release them, nobody buys. If people bought them, the aftermarket value would reflect their collectability, but it doesn't.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It looks like a deliberate homage to the 2005 version with the roofed section, the shield colors and the midgard serpent lookalike.
Love it!
Creator continues to be the best theme right now, especially amongst the few non-licensed ones left.

@Sandinista, excellent point. Sadly classic space isn't one thing to everyone. I've heard people say the Spaceship (x3) didn't count as a 'real' CS set!
Even though I think it's genuinely one of the best spacecraft we've gotten in recent years, and not at all due to the branding. But still not good enough apparently. But yeah... we apparently need exactly what came out in 1979 because that's not a bad idea at all.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Sandinista ,

With regards to 70841 Benny’s Space Squad, your premise is wrong and so is your conclusion.

Demand for that set was so great when it was released that LEGO stores couldn’t get enough in stock for a couple of months (I was in the US and UK at the time and saw that first hand). LEGO doubled its initially planned production run which over-saturated the market, eventually leading to discounts in several markets and the low prices it still goes for to this day.

If LEGO had only ever had a standard production run for a set of that size, it would command crazy high prices in today’s aftermarket. The low price for it today is only because of over-production and discounting in the year or so after its release.

Classic Space was the main theme I bought as a child. If they released a new set in that theme I would buy it like a shot. I didn't buy Benny's spaceship because it was part of The Lego Movie (which I really didn't enjoy), not Classic Space. The Ideas Exo Suit is awful. You mention a Juniors set which those who remember Classic Space wouldn't buy because it's Juniors. Having a space theme doesn't mean it appeals to Classic Space fans.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is rather disappointing after the excellent Pirate Ship and Castle. I had every intention of buying but now I’ve seen it it’s looking quite unlikely. Many comments I’ve seen complain about the sail being brick built, but as this is Lego that is rather what I expect. I know other ships have used plastic or cloth sails but I’ve never liked that. The serpent is particularly underwhelming.

@Sandinista:
To be fair, BSS was insanely difficult to find for a few weeks. People bought it, but a small AFOL market didn’t take long to sate (and it didn’t help that they appeared for all of half a second in the film). The big ship did get a lot of attention when it came out, but was ironically priced out many fans’ range (yes, there are AFOLs who don’t buy above $50). Exo-Suit also sold really well…to the point they did a second run (unheard of for typical Ideas sets at the time). Much of the initial run was snatched up by speculators, who suddenly saw their market bottom out, and some of them are probably still sitting on copies, waiting for prices to rise.

@Binnekamp:
Why? Because the box has the TLM logo instead of Classic Space? Because it’s bleys, not greys? Because no original Benny came in a set with that color scheme?

@Zander:
The flip side of that is that, if they had not increased production, many fans would have tried to get many more copies than they ended up buying. I found myself in that precise situation. I did get a few copies early on, and had intended to buy more, but it was so easy to find them a few months in that I kept pushing off additional purchases because I didn’t feel like I needed to be in a rush anymore. Then one day I realized they were all gone.

@Doctor_Hugh:
2x 70816.
2-3 70841.
4x 21109.
1x 70821.

And that’s from someone who’s more partial to Blacktron 1, and whose childhood collection somehow managed to steer clear of the blue CS color scheme across dozens of sets. I know of a few other members of my LUG who also purchased the first three.

Why would you ask me? Personally I don't care as long as it's a great set, and the Spaceship x3 is an outstanding set even. What I meant is that there are apparently people who see a great callback set like the viking boat and somehow think that they are owed a classic space set. And an original one too. Not one that's literally a love letter. But a 'real' one.

Doctor_Hugh proves my point.

I mean, it's perfectly fine to not like a set like that. Heck, I bought it later because the price was out of reach at the time, as it's the largest TLM set beside the Sea Cow.
But not buying it because it's not literally the Classic Space subtheme even though it's specifically made to provide a modern new set of a long gone theme misses the point. It will never be the actual classic space subtheme. It never even was a subtheme, just 'Space' before factions were a thing.

Themes like classic space will never reappear exactly like they used to be. For that you're better off tracking down the actual old sets.

And very few themes ever get that treatment.
This is why this viking ship is such a nice surprise. It pays homage to an older theme in a way that hasn't particularly been done before beside the more common castle and pirates callback sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

To add to the discussion on Neo-CS sets: I bought the Spaceship x3 (and modified the heck out of it!), and four copies of the battle pack released for TLM2. I also received the Build and Fix workshop as a gift, simply because was Classic Space themed. My brother bought 2 of the Ideas mech and about twelve (or so) green astronaut figs off Bricklink, which I eventually purchased from him for my Classic Space fleet.

To be honest, SPACESHIPx3 is what jumpstarted my love of Classic Space. I've built a bunch of CS themed SW models such as two Conveyex put back-to-back, Resistance I-TS Transport and a walled Space base using the 2015 Jurassic World gates from 75919 as a starting point and two Space-ized patrol jeeps from 75916 to boot. This just scratches the surface of what influence Benny from TLM series had on me!

That’s one interpretation I suppose. As an adult my favourite theme has become castles and medieval so at least they’ve provided some good sets recently. When I’m nostalgic for space sets I’ll just build my originals from the 70s and 80s.

This post wasn’t a reply to mine but as I’ve been mentioned I feel I should clarify that I don’t feel I’m owed anything. If they make a space set I like then I’ll buy it. Great set for sure, love the color scheme, creator tends to do a lot of darkblue + yellow but it's one of my favorite color combination, I think it works well here.

Vikings vs the Midgard Serpent is one of those sets I really wanted as a kid but never got my hands on. A second shot at it is amazing!

Lego released them last month: 60351, 60350, 60349, 60348

Classic space logo's in the OG and updated color scheme. The sets are in the signature classic space blue and white. These sets are all updates of original sets 920, 6972, 6929, 6927.

The ingenious part is the new sets are really pre-Classic Space showing the transition between what we have now and the far future of Classic Space.

Disappointing looking set. 8017 had 9 printed shields + 2 stickered ones, 6 large oars, 6 minifigures, a big sail cloth and those huge hull pieces for half the price.

We're really doing horned helmets again? You'd think a Danish company would know better. Especially after we got a proper helmet in a CMF that one time

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

The danish magazine acutally says the price will be dkk 899, but that it is on sale for dkk 699. Just so that you don’t get too happy about the price;) I personally am going for the Thor goat boat instead of this.

That's what I said (see above), but to quote somebody (also above):

''They didn't have giant sea serpents either, I don't think historical accuracy is the aim here.''

I guess by that rationale we should be glad that the Vikings in this set aren't wearing Roman soldier helmets, with a nice horse hair plume on top.

Everyone talking about the Midgard Serpent, some about Huginn and Muninn, but no-one even mentioning Auðumbla, the primeval cow! It's more of a (mytho-)zoological set than a maritime one, really. But where is Odin on Sleipnir?

I’m not getting anything to come up for 920, so I tried 6920 and got nothing for that, too. Regardless, I think you’re reaching a bit there. Most of that wave of sets has an inset panel on the box front showing the real NASA equivalent that inspired them. 60348 is based on the Artemis lunar rover concept, 60349 is from the Artemis Lunar Gateway, 60350 is the Artemis Base Camp concept, and 60351 looks like it’s tied into the LEGO City animated series. 60349 is an orbital space station, which has absolutely no equivalent from any fictional LEGO-original space theme. Two sets based on the ISS are the closest you’ll find.

I was going to bring up Audumbla, but you've already got it licked.

Keep in mind that wanting a 3-in-1 "Classic Space" set (as we think of it) is a MUCH more specific desire than wanting a 3-in-1 castle, pirates, vikings, or space set in general.

"Classic Space" as AFOLs tend to think of it is practically an IP in its own right, with a strictly defined color scheme, design language, minifigure designs, etc. Needless to say, you wouldn't count a generic astronaut minifigure as a Classic Space character any more than I'd count a generic ninja minifigure as a Ninjago character. Even modernized torso and leg printing or headgear (like those of the Black Falcon/Eagle Knight minifigures from 21325) would be enough to disqualify a space minifigure from counting as "Classic Space" in the eyes of many AFOLs.

And needless to say, for kids in LEGO's core audience — over two decades too young to have a nostalgic attachment to Classic Space (except through Benny from The LEGO Movie) — there's nothing inherently MORE special about a blue, gray, and yellow space vehicle crewed by astronauts in footie pajamas with a planet logo than a spaceship in any other colors with more detailed, modern minifigures.

That's not to say that a Classic Space throwback set COULDN'T appeal to kids. But its appeal would be about the same as any other spaceship or moonbase, despite imposing a bunch of additional design constraints they wouldn't necessarily understand or appreciate. So I don't think it's surprising that the Creator 3-in-1 design team hasn't made that an especially high priority.

I'm just happy they made a viking set.. could be testing waters see how it sells. Even though it's creator,, Buy it bet more sets come..

@Aanchir:
I believed they name-dropped “Classic Space” as one of the vintage themes that would only return as part of the C3n1 theme, so it’s a fair ask. Between Star Wars, the City NASA sets, and Lightyear, they may have just decided this year has Space overload without piling on with one more.

Right, yeah. Anything else from DC/Marvel/Ninjago? I know there are also still some Ideas sets, plus the big Space Shuttle available now, but I don’t know if they take sets into account after their first birthday.

Maybe you are confused with 7018
That was 60 Euro in the stores.
120 would be very expensive for this seeing the small size unless you value the 4th minifig very highly."

I certainly might have heard someone compare this ship to 7018 and mistook that as the creator ship price. I completely agree that $120 would be outrageous. The conversion from DKK to USD puts it at $100. That's a respectable price although I'll wait until I see better pictures. I can be really bad about judging size by the box art.

So what your saying is that these sets are not inspired by Classic Space, but actual NASA engineering is inspired by Classic Space.

In other words, we no longer have to worry about a Classic Space reboot set coming out and costing $500, we instead need to start saving billions to build an actual Classic Space rocket. Hey Elon, I can use a little help here!

The forum-style bunfight of speculation is so amusing here, i actually forgot this viking ship is not flying in space.

My favourite quote so far:
‘ Well you dug your own grave.’

Unreal- another’s comment shouldn’t threaten our own opinion. Sometimes i feel that community warmth may be lacking but then i remember how many of us are on the spectrum!

Wow - did not expect to come back 2 days later to a load of replies about Classic Space. Nor did I expect the arguments! Needless to say, I like the City space sets, I know we got some CS stuff in TLM (a long long time ago now), but I just want NEW CS to go along with all the other stuff that's been released recently that hearkens back to older themes Lego did. That's all.

I don't really care about anecdotal evidence, or statistics about particular sets, or anything like that. Lego just needs to see us right. I'm glad the Viking enthusiasts have their set though - hope it sells really well!
