By in United States,

I'm impressed that Lego managed to improve on the mini Republic gunship.

Also looks like weapons racks have given way to play walls, continuing the oddity from last year. At least Luke can be clipped to the Hoth cave for some play value. I'm sure it's a default 1/5, but still, it's not totally useless.

Missed opportunity for a tropical stormtrooper from the old LEGO Star Wars game.

By in United States,

The dreidel is cool, looks like LEGO cares more about where it comes from than J.K. Rowling does :P (I’m not trying to legitimately get into that matter, I just couldn’t not make this joke). Missed opportunity to have revealed that set yesterday (Harry’s birthday).

By in United States,

Every single build in the Star Wars one is displayed on the box. Last year’s showed all but one, which was a weapons rack. I don’t know how I feel, but I liked when there was a bit of surprise involved.

By in United States,

Very nice EARLY Merry Xmas!
Everyone's gonna' want those Vader, R2 and 3PO figs!
And the mini Luke's Landspeeder is very nice.
Also, let's all make a petition to ban Battle-Droids from ever appearing in any advent, EVER! ;)

By in Germany,

Ok, now I can delete the SW-calender from my wanted list... These are not the figures, I am looking for.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Guardians of the Galaxy one is very nice too.
Drax and Nebula have nice Xmas torso prints.

By in United States,

Heck, I'll just do a rundown now:
1. AT-ST: noble effort for the scale, but kind of meh.
2. T-16 Skyhopper: excellent work.
3. LAAT-T Gunship: Impressive detail, but I worry it's fragile.
4. Bad Batch Shuttle: I'm not watching the show, but looks recognizable and decent.
5. B-Wing: For that scale, surely there were more greebles that could have improved this? And why not a 1x4 tile instead of a plate for the bottom?
6. Hoth cave: It's an automatic 1/5, but I'd like to see Luke clipped on before I completely condemn it.
7. Weapons wall: Automatic 1/5.
8. Hoth cannon: It's OK, but also too large for a mini-scale display and too small for a minifigure.
9. Clone Trooper: Automatic 5/5.
10. Sandcastle Fortress: It's cute.
11. TIE Interceptor: Looks fairly repetitive of prior versions, but ok.
12. Sweater 3PO: Cute.
13. Hoth Luke: I just got one with the Tauntaun Microfighter two years ago.
14. Beach Vader: silly and limited use.
15. Snowtrooper: We're here for army builders, folks.
16. Luke's Landspeeder: This is the third or fourth go at this. It's probably been perfected since this finally eliminates the studs and hole in the front.
17. I don't know what this is.
18. Sweater R2: Also cute.
19. Tri-Fighter Droid: Decent representation for the scale.
20. Moff Gideon's cruiser, maybe? It's OK.
21. Turrett:: same as the Hoth cannon: it's both too big and too small.
22: Moisture Vaporator: this feels phoned in. Maybe somebody can improve this with some greebles.
23. Santa GNK: No. Honestly, this looks like an overweight mess of parts.
24. Battle Droid: Again, we're here for the Army Builders. I've been doing these calendars for 11 years and the stockpile of droids is nice at this point.

By in Canada,

They look great; however, I am not getting them this year as I'm saving the Lego budget for larger more substantial sets. Voldemort in a Christmas sweater might have been hard to resist tho!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I miss Castle advent calendars.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Very poor effort from the Star Wars calender again. Only worth getting for the 3 'festive' figures, even though I do love a novelty Gonk Droid.

Harry Potter is way better, and I'm not a Potter fan.

Can't wait to see what the Marvel effort produces since that was my go-to last year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Technically Horace Slughorn from his introduction in the Half-Blood Prince is included in the Harry Potter calendar. Quite the iconic collection of locations and items from across the books and movies.

Me too. This one has always been my fav advent, even though I love Star Wars.
7952 Kingdoms Advent Calendar
Every single one we opened was fun and playable. 6 exclusive figs in this one I believe?

Gravatar

Love the Star Wars calendar. Harry Potter looks nothing like a Christmas edition.

One of my good Jewish friends is fully aware of the irony of him buying an Advent calendar every year, but at the end of the day, he and his kids are in it for some fun builds and minifigures. I'm sure we're both equally perplexed at a Dreidel in a Christian custom. Eh, it's Lego.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Some of these Star Wars models are better than their bigger counterparts.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I wish Lego would stop putting droids in advent calendars. They've done it almost every single year. I would take literally any other kind of figure.
Don't get me wrong: I like getting a couple of battle droids in prequel sets to add to my collection, but in an advent calendar I want proper minifigures, not brick-built figs.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Harry potter seems solid, but I'll be passing. Star Wars looks pretty standard, though I think I nay skip it this year. Depending on the marvel one, this might be a gap year for me. There's no major problem with any of them, I think I just need a break before I return to appreciate 2023 better.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would say that the Harry Potter one looks a lot stronger than the Star Wars one. Love the Slughorn chair in particular, and both the microscale builds from all over the franchise and the minifigures are generally strong. Still doesn't justify the $45 price tag, though.

It’s for the game. If you look at the image of the back of the box you can see it’s some kind of board and there’s rules printed on it.

I thought LEGO canceled Christmas?

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Looks like the HP calendar is giving us an idea what the rumoured upcoming 76405 Hogwarts Express will look like, also another Gringotts microbuild after teasing us with Griphook and the desk last year!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think both Advent Calendars look good and I am very pleased that the Star Wars calendar contains three exclusive minifigures, but Darth Vader's torso is odd. I miss the days when there was an exclusive seasonal minifigure and another unique minifigure that was more versatile.

Advent Calendars represent an opportunity to include characters that would be unlikely to appear in a standard set, but are desirable. For instance, the Republic-era Crosshair would suit an Advent Calendar, as I am unsure where else he could realistically appear.

@ResIpsaLoquitur said:

Number seventeen is the V-35 Courier Landspeeder, while twenty is the Acclamator-class Assault Ship.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Pretty surprising most of the stuff from the Star Wars calendar is from the pre-Disney era, especially when they released hours upon hours of new content this year with their live action series... just an observation and definitely not a complaint though.

The Harry Potter calendar is more appealing to me than the one from last year, which is the only one I didn't get. Looks like a decent selection of new minifigs with exclusive prints.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Both pretty lackluster and not worth the price.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

I still don't understand why they make HP and now even Marvel advent calendars but never made of Ninjago.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Slightly curious how the HP calendar game works, can’t quite make out the rules in the image

Gravatar
By in United States,

That’s a Gonk droid dressed as Santa? I would have never figured that out. Trash. They should have printed the Santa suit and given it a proper hat. I’m still interested in the set for the holiday minifigs.

That Tonks minifig is awesome!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Star Wars one is a "Must-Have" (maybe even 2), and the Harry Potter is a "Probably-Gonna-Get."

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't care about the calendars at all, but I *NEED* C-3PO's R2-D2 holiday sweater.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Boring on both, not inspired. I don't want to buy just for some neat minifig torsos. And certainly not for those ridiculous prices.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely getting the SW advent calendar. I knew I was going to get it the moment they revealed Beach Vader at SW Celebration. I love the oddball and seasonal minfigs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Darth Vader minifig is a fun one.

Is that clone trooper a special one or readily available from past sets? I don’t follow the clone wars stuff close enough.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

First time I notice those cloaked and capped mini-statuette (2 of them in black representing Dementors in the HP set near the tree). Have they been around for a long time?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@HOBBES I believe that piece was used as the Emperor’s hologram in a Star Destroyer set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

$45! wow I guess inflation hit these too. weren't they already increased last year to $40 which seemed ok since they had a theme... I don't care if Darth vader is in a tutu he's not worth $45!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@B_Space_Man

ah! Right, I think I recall that - in trans-blue. Thanks.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ooh, the Star Wars one is a big improvement over last year’s! I like it.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Each colored 2x4 used in HP corresponds to a book. Nice touch.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

loooool another clone commander, they're really taking the p*ss. Big F U to army builders. But I have distanced myself from Lego SW, so skipping this one.

The HP one on the other hand is axtually pretty good imo, but I would have swapped Snape, Sirius and Neville for rarer figures

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Good to see Star Wars continue to at least put more effort than a Santa hat on BB-8 and call it a seasonal minifigure. As I understand it some of this calendar is a tie-in with Disney+ Lego Summer Vacation which explains Vader’s torso and the sandcastle. This, and the others are now an easy pass but I don’t envy the Lego team tasked with these every year. I do however enjoy the Brickset reveals in the run up to Christmas - a seasonal delight and the chance to see the order, review and comments.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

I can't for the life of me remember what scene Sirius' outfit is from... Does anyone know? Also, it's interesting to see that they've actually included Hagrid's motorbike and *gasp* Hedwig for "Deathly Hallows pt. 1"! If they can go there in an advent calendar, perhaps we'll finally be seeing an actual set of the scene as well, although that would surely exclude Hedwig!

Gravatar

Why the Endor trees decorating the box, and no ewook minifig?

We need a BEACH TROOPER!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't collect Lego SW (my wallet is very thankful), but I really like the Hoth Luke "vignette".

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The HP one is nice, as this time they have lots of figures and a nice-looking dreidel but we don't do anything with them 5 seconds after the build, and they're just being added to the random parts pile.

Having said that, I must say I'm surprised they don't have a "90 years of play" calendar this year, with classic mini build and mini figures.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really dont know how they keep doing it, both excellent...... £30 though, and if you like the rest of them, im guessing £30 for Marvel and £25 for City and Friends.... thats £140 for 5 calendars this year, mind you keep you going til more or less Easter.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Vader’s summer a-shirt is epic. I’m going to see if there’s anything like that design on an actual shirt.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I used to get two each year, but with the price increase, I'll only pick up the Star Wars one. But, I'm sure Lego will make enough off others to offset the loss ;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

It looks neat, but tongue out Voldy will haunt my dreams tonight.

I can't justify the cost, so hopefully I'll be able to find another sale (but those seem to be hard to find these days also). But they are maybes for sure. I'll just have to wait and see. Nothing is screaming I need it. At least the majority of them are repeats or slight variants from what I already have on HP. The themed torsos are neat in SW, but not exactly necessary.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't buy Harry Potter sets though sometimes I've been tempted by the HP calendar because there's been nice furniture. Not so much this year, Neville's torso is nice but not a lot else I'm interested in.

I'll be looking out for the Friends and City reveals.

"Evil Ballet with Darth Vader, *student does poorly* *Force choke*" On topic: R2 and 3PO on each other's sweaters is awesome!

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Ok, I found Sirius' shirt, and it might be the deepest deep cut ever: It's the one he's wearing in the «Have you seen this wizard?» poster. Which explains why he's holding his Azkaban number plate.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The droids in holiday sweaters are amazing. Not sure what's up with Vader at the beach (especially given how much he hates sand...), but that deathstar sunset shirt is great. They need to make that into a real hawaiian shirt.

I know!! I always loved the element of surprise and opening some and getting an “ooo” or “ahh”. It is very disappointing that they are showing all of the builds. Also, as cool and sweet as it is with them including a clone trooper, why another Clone Commander????? Just why???

Said it last year, will say it this year: Hey TLG; where's my DC Universe one of these...seriously: Batman in a Christmas sweater would blow the doors off the place (not to mention Supes, Wondy, Flash...though that might dangerous, ya' know: static electricity :D).

And I get it: TLG isn't in the 'calendar making business'...but they kinda' are too:)

HPAC excels in prints, both exclusive tiles (this year it’s the burnt “Harry Potter” slip from the Goblet of Fire), and minifigs they might otherwise never produce in a set.

@ra226:
Sand getting up inside your shorts is merely annoying, but sand getting into your respirator could actually kill you, so that’s an interesting question for sure.

@8BrickMario:
Visually, she had a blue glow effect kinda like Force ghosts in SW, so the CMF looks more accurate to the film, but they have a rule that prohibits the use of a full CMF outside of the CMF line.

This, exactly. This calendar is such a step up from the dark years, but still not back to the golden years of the Santa Vader, Santa Jango, Yeti Chewbacca calendar years.

The Xmas sweaters are fun. But not the exclusive torso+hip+leg prints on a holiday figure from the peak of these calendars.

No weapons racks is a plus. No targets to shoot (wth, Lego) is a plus. The Death Star and Hoth walls look like fun micro builds. And I’m old school I know, but any winter calendar with a strong snowy Hoth focus is all right by me.

I flat out love the creativity of the annual crazy gnk droids lately. Keep ‘em coming!

These sets are such an opportunity to be creative, have fun, and do something fantastic with theme [whatever]. Really love the discussions surrounding them this time of year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

kind of off topic but a minecraft advent calender could be cool too

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Star Wars builds look fantastic! I especially love the wampa cave! I'm not really sold on the figs though. The snow trooper, Hoth Luke, and B1(would have preferred a full minifig) are fine with me. The commander is fine as well although I would have preferred it be a reg since I still haven't been able to get the clone pack, and it's already easy to amass a lot of commanders. The other three don't really appeal to me, specifically R2 and 3PO. I love Vader's torso, but it's not like I would use it for anything.

I've never bought a Harry Potter set, but this looks quite nice! I would probably end up selling all the figs to make up for some of the price, but the builds look enjoyable. It's really nice to have the Sword of Gryffindor again as well. That being said, I would have to see both of these calendars at a very large discount before I would bother buying them. $30 is my cap and I doubt they will drop that much.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Pleased the HP don't have the "Golden Trio" this year, lovely to see new characters in the calendar. Love the micro builds as well, some lovely nods to different parts of the HP stories - gone straight to the top of the Christmas wish list

And less minifigs and a %13 price raise.

Love the GNK droid. But, the ugly sweater Lego graphic design has 'jumped the shark'... or, dare I say 'the beach.' Darth in a tank top has no Xmas value. Be better, Lego™.

A wall is just a gun rack without guns. So lame. I'll be waiting for the inevitable 50% Feb markdowns.

HP focusing on minibuilds is interesting. Perhaps usable with the UCS Hogwarts. Yet, I prefer builds that are usable in the minifig world.

You got me with the 34! special prints boast. Funny. And I was watching a Making of HP documentary last night and noticed Voldemort sticking out his tongue. It might have been in the graveyard scene of Goblet of Fire. Yeah, when he’s taunting tied-up Harry, “I can touch you now.”

@StyleCounselor:
Last year it was Privet Drive (a sticker in the playset), the cake, Dudley’s piggy pajamas, the Leaky Cauldron sign, the train ticket, the generic Unsorted robe (repeated 3x with Ron, Hermione, and Draco), the platform sign, and the dreidel top. That’s ten exclusive parts featuring eight exclusive prints.

This year we’re getting the slip of paper, the dreidel midsection, and Voldemort’s head for sure. Harry’s torso doesn’t look new from the front, but two-sided heads make matching it against old prints nearly impossible. Myrtle’s torso pattern may not be new, but the color difference makes it unique (sadly, no matching leg print), and her visible face doesn’t match either from the CMF (plus, the hair is now black instead of dark-blue, the head is white instead of that minty shade of green…). Sirius has a new sweater, but the face shown does appear to be used in 76408, and I wouldn’t be shocked if that tile is a unique print. Voldemort’s torso also appears to be unique, if not distinct (the CMF actually got the color of his robes correct, where the best any other version does is print the wrinkle lines in that color). Tonks appears to be the same outfit as 76408, but with the coat unbuttoned and no leg print. Snape may be a straight repeat of his Moments minifig, which would be its third appearance. And Neville has a better version of his 4867 sweater, but the face shown appears to be from 75969. That just leaves Slughorn. The face shown doesn’t appear new, and while the character depiction is definitely new, I don’t know that I’d call it a unique minifig _unless_ the neck is the criminally underutilized 24445, and not just another plainvanilla jumper plate. So that’s a minimum of nine new prints (probably ten with Sirius’ tile), and five of seven minifigs that are definitely exclusive for the moment (the first HPAC started out great in that regard, but I think most got reused elsewhere before too long).

The face shown doesn’t appear new, and while the character depiction is definitely new, I don’t know that I’d call it a unique minifig _unless_ the neck is the criminally underutilized 24445, and not just another plainvanilla jumper plate. So that’s a minimum of nine new prints (probably ten with Sirius’ tile), and five of seven minifigs that are definitely exclusive for the moment (the first HPAC started out great in that regard, but I think most got reused elsewhere before too long)."

Ahh, as usual, your diligence is unsurpassed.

I should have qualified my 'special print' assertion about 76390. I'm only referring to prints on non-minfig pieces and also non-basic-HP game-dreidel pieces.

That's why I counted 5 from last year: cake, ticket, Cauldron sign, Privet Drive, and Platform 9 3/4 (which was only a sticker on 75955 (among others)).

That's also why I only count 2 this year: Goblet entry and (hopefully) Sirius' mug shot placard.

New prints on minifigs have to be budgeted the same as new prints on tiles. All four HPACs have minifigs which are unlikely to be repeated anytime soon, but unlike SW the few seasonal exclusive minifigs are canon to the films. A lot of the minifigs have been fairly generic, still canon, but distinct from any that have appeared in regular sets. For many people, the printed tiles are more of a bonus while the minifigs are the major draw. Beyond that, the first two did a really good job of building cohesive scenes, and the next two have games incorporated into them. The dreidel parts are not the sort of thing anyone was clamoring for, and are really only printed because the nature of the Advent Calendar format doesn’t exactly allow for the inclusion of stickers. They can’t stuff them into the bottom of the cup without damaging them, and if they put them on top they’ll just shift to another cup or potentially even slip out of the cracks in the box. They’re also limited run, so they don’t need to hang on to the printing pads forever.
