Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 14
Posted by CapnRex101,
While the Room of Requirement which emerged yesterday included reasonable detail, I question whether this was an appropriate subject for the microscale format.
Hopefully today's model will be more distinct...
Unfortunately not, although I think that again relates to the subject chosen, rather than the design quality. The cavernous Hall of Prophecy is most recognisable by its apparently endless shelves of glass orbs, each containing the record of a prophecy. Trans-light blue 1x1 round plates form these orbs and look reasonable, although I find the location pretty indistinct at such a small scale.
Overall - Microscale models require a subject with clearly distinctive features, which the Hall of Prophecy lacks.

Poorly executed. I wouldn't recognize if wasn't your review.
Could be the Hall of Prophecy. Could be the Library at the Jedi Temple.
This is possibly every "mysterious vault of information" in a sci-fi/fantasy franchise.

See I’m the opposite; this one I pegged right away, it was yesterdays I had no clue about
For a moment I thought it was the Ministry of Magic location from the set. And I thought: isn't that dark green?
Now I know why.
Maybe they could have focussed on one shelf to make it more clear they're 1x1 round plates?
Surprisingly weak entry from what has thus far been a strong calendar.
Uh, what?

Agreed. I think I would recognize this one, but it seems unfinished and lacking details compared to the others.
See, I knew exactly what this was, this time. Because yesterday I looked up the Bricklink mini model listings to see if they included the names (they did), and I accidentally scrolled down too far and saw the name of this one too. And then I misremembered what I read, so I built the Ministry of Magic this morning…
This points out a weird failing of this particular format. To make this work, you have to built each of eight movies down to two scenes that can be built as an Advent Calendar mini model. Works great for the Whomping Willow from Year 2, but Year 5 is a lot harder to nail down. Personally, I’d love it if they’d made Grawp, if only because then they’d have to include a minifig as part of a larger scene, _and_ the game would force them to put it all in a single day.
Oh I thought it was supposed to be the death archway.
I liked it. I know there was some discussion back on day one whether Ollivanders was the department of mysteries. The addition of the trans blue sets this one apart from that model.
@CapnRex101
Do you have some sort of crib sheet provided by TLG to tell you what these are, or are you just making best guesses based on your knowledge of the source material?
If it was me, well... "Today we appear to have a microscale Goth Marble Arch, which didn't appear in the books or films, but maybe the designer got bored?"
Did anybody else get a second set of Ollivander's instead of the build kit for the Hall of Prophecy? ??
While I wouldn't immediately shout Prophecy because of the arch, it is quite obvious with the trans light blue since they glow so much in that movie.
I think they did a fine job with it since they have to go miniscale. Otherwise, I'd prefer just a shelf with an assortment of globes/orbs in either GITD or trans light blue representing a single shelf of prophecies. Maybe at least one printed minifig head in trans light blue saying Harry's name or something.
@Sethro3:
I was about to say that every non-minifig day has always been microscale, but that’s not true. Both of the Year 4 scenes were minifig-scale depictions of giant chalices.
I thought it was the BFG’s dream cave?
