Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 21
Posted by CapnRex101,
Following interesting models from The Deathly Hallows on the previous two days, hopefully an equally interesting minifigure will arrive on day 21, like those throughout this calendar.
Let's open today's door and find out...
While looking at the box, I noticed Hedwig appearing as a lone item and was prepared to be disappointed, as including an owl and a 2x4 plate would be rather lacklustre, relative to other days. However, we actually receive two items today! The first is indeed Hedwig, whose bright yellow eyes and printed feathers look superb, as ever.
The spinner which forms part of the Advent Calendar board game accompanies Hedwig, with designs decorating each side of a medium nougat crate element. The spinner functions nicely and resembles a dreidel, commonly associated with Hanukkah. While perhaps incidental, I am pleased to see acknowledgement of a holiday other than Christmas at this time of year.
Overall - Hedwig would have been underwhelming alone, so I am glad Harry's beloved owl was packaged with the spinner on day 21.

I was glad Hedwig on a plate wasn't all we got today too - BUT - they gave us Hedwig for Deathly Hallows pt. 1! That's pretty dark... Perhaps we got the dreidel today to distract us from this fact?
Owls are always welcome to bulk out my other HP kits, especially for the Daily Prophet on Diagon Alley. And the dreidal looks cute.
Does anyone know where we instructions for the game? Not that I want any spoilers before Saturday
"OH NO, BIRD FRIEND!"
(See video at 1:11. I will never not laugh at that, wrong as it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud7b8Mg6iVI)
Oh well okay, I guess the dreidel is today, not at the end of the week. Good thing Hanukkah runs this whole week lol

The instructions are on the play mat/board for the game.
@J0rgen:
Dark would have been including a clear headlight brick so you could mount her to the plate horizontally.
I was about to say something about us getting the absolute bare minimum, but it checks out with the dreidel being included I guess.
@ResIpsaLoquitur thank you for sharing that, that was great!

For more fun, watch the entire Harry Potter compilation video he has. It might take you a good hour to get through it. I don't remember if he included his videos for Fantastic Beasts as well.
One of our favorites from that series is the Polar Express one.

@Aardtacha - thank you - I will go and have a look :-)
The Dark Mark side is very cool
Well that’s my question from yesterday answered
Everyday of this calendar has been a joy. The micro-scenes have been a great addition. Hands down this is the best Lego Advent calendar that was released this year.
The Death Dreidel piece is very cool. Let's roll and decide po' Hedwig's fate.

You might be surprised about the SW AC. It's also very good this year. A lot of the designs don't really jump out at you from pictures. But, having them in your hand, they are larger than usual, beefy, and well-designed with cool parts.
"I have a little dreidel, I made it out of bricks..."

There are no instructions on my calendar, instead it uses more space than the instructions would take to direct users to lego.com/harrypotter-adventcalendar - is it so bloody hard to just include the instructions? I mean, Lego is so set on that every set should have play value out-of-the-box (in case a kid is stuck on a desolate island and it's the first/only lego set they have), they should really stop assuming everyone has easy internet access.
Anyway, here are the instructions:
-
How to play our LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar board game
Step 1: Collect
After you have opened all 24 doors on time (no cheating!), gather the 24 builds in the center of the board, in between two players.
Step 2: Spin
Both players take 3 builds to begin. Then, taking turns, players use the spinner to find out what action they should take...
If you get...
+ Collect one build from the center
- Return one build to the center
Skull Steal one build from another player! (Gasp!)
How to Win
The first player to either collect at least 1 build from each of the 8 movies, or 8 builds of the same baseplate color... wins!
-
Note that they say "8 builds of the same baseplate color", when there are only 3 of each color. I guess that also means you should take 3 builds with *different* base colors at the beginning of the game.
@axeleng:
Last year's game instructions were printed on the game board. This format allows them to debug the game...which suddenly seems insightful.
Anyways, they caution you against cheating on the opening of doors to get started playing the game early (a truly victimless crime, if ever there was one), but there are no such rules banning the pocketing of a pile of same-color 2x4 plates to change the base colors!
But seriously, taking all three of any movie would be an effective way to block the other player from winning, as they'd need to steal one from you to satisfy the "one from every movie" requirement. How they'll sort out the "eight of one color" thing, I don't know, but they have two days to get a fix in place before kids will expect to be able to play the game.
It is weird that Hedwig comes on day 21. She should have been included on day 20, as she was killed before arriving at the Burrow.
