LEGO finally returns to The Lord of the Rings, at minifigure-scale, with the huge 10316 Rivendell:

10316 Rivendell
Rated 18+, 6167 pieces
$499.99 / £429.99 / €499.99
Available from 5th March at LEGO.com

LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings Rivendell, the one LEGO set to rule them all

The LEGO Group, in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, today announced the much-anticipated LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell set, inspired by the award-winning film adaptations. This highly detailed, 6167-piece set features the iconic Elven stronghold from Middle-earth and comes complete with 15 minifigures.

Home to the house of Elrond, Rivendell is a key location in Middle-earth and events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as the place where the Fellowship was formed and the quest to destroy the One Ring began.

The LEGO The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell set is packed with fan favourite moments and Easter eggs, and can be built in three sections including:

Section One:

  • The Council Ring – complete with a semicircular ring of chairs for the council and the plinth where the ring is first revealed and the Fellowship discuss how to destroy it
  • Frodo’s Bedroom – with a desk and chest where the young hobbit recovers following his rescue by Arwen from the hands of the Nazgûl, before being reunited with Bilbo
  • Elrond’s study – with famous paintings from the history of Middle-earth

Section Two:

  • An elven tower - featuring five Elven statues of unnamed famous warriors from the past

Section Three:

  • Gazebo, river and bridge – to recreate the scene where the Fellowship departs Rivendell

The set also comes with 15 minifigures – including all nine members of the Fellowship; Gandalf the Grey, all four hobbits (Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc 'Merry' Brandybuck and Peregrin 'Pippin' Took), Legolas, Gimli, Boromir and Aragorn. They are joined by minifigures of Elrond, Arwen, Bilbo Baggins plus additional elves and a dwarf (Gloin) are also included.

LEGO and The Lord of the Rings fans alike will also receive several new LEGO elements from the world of Middle-earth, including: Bilbo’s sword, Sting, the broken shards of Narsil, Aragorn’s ranger sword, Boromir’s sword, as well as numerous dwarven axes and elvish blades to ensure the Fellowship are well armed for their quest ahead.

Talking about the set, LEGO Design Master, Mike Psiaki said, “We know many of our fans have been anticipating a set like this for a long-time – but a great LEGO The Lord of the Rings set is never late, it arrives precisely when it means to! It was important to us that we created something really special in this recreation of Rivendell."

"We aimed to add as much detail as possible and create an engaging experience throughout the build to delight fans recreating scenes or proudly displaying Elrond’s home. We are really pleased with the final design and how we have brought Rivendell to life in brick form.”

The LEGO The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell set is RRP £429.99/$499.99/€499.99 and is available exclusively for LEGO VIP members from 5th-7th March 2023, along with a free Frodo and Gollum LEGO BrickHeadz set (40630).

It is free to become a LEGO VIP member and you can find out more at www.lego.com/VIP. From 8th March 2023 the LEGO The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell set will be available at LEGO Retail stores and www.LEGO.com/LOTR.

By in Czechia,

This... thing... of pure beauty... made me speechless.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Awesome, love the minifigs!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This set looks incredible. I expected something like this to be done in microscale like Hogwarts in 2018, and I would’ve been very happy with that. But this just blows me away. It’s exciting to see so many new minifigures and molds!!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I need this in my life

Gravatar
By in United States,

Best. Set. Ever.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's going to be a job-and-a-half getting those tiles aligned perfectly on that roof.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

$500 is a bit too much for me, but the set looks utterly incredible and it'd be an instant purchase for me if I had $500 to spare.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Considering recent developments, not a bad price tbh. What a beautiful set, it's all I've ever wanted from a mega LOTR set!

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Looks awesome, but I feel my OCD will be the end of me on that roof!

Gravatar
By in United States,

WOW!

So good to see these characters again, and fully updated!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

new sword and axe pieces

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I wonder how deep it is when connected. I have no idea if this will fit on my shelf or not... it looks pretty big

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

And here we are again. Lego release a new huge set and people will buy it brainless without even wait just a few weeks or maybe months.

Anyway, I like Gimlis axe and the statues.

maybe i am wrong, but Legolas is not that blond.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Seems small to have more than 6000 pieces. A lot of 1x1 tiles, but...

Gravatar
By in Poland,

woah nice, but I wish we could get any lotr sets in price range like 30-50-70 or 100 euros/$

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s… beautiful.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It looks to be a very impressive display set. I can already tell that the worst part of the building will be those trees with all those leaves.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks more like a MOC with all of its intense detail. Much more interesting than Star Wars vehicles around that price point imo (and I like Star Wars, not LOTR).

As someone with a smaller budget, it’ll be nice to look at in-store.

By in United Kingdom,

So will this set be available at Lego Retail Stores from March 5th? Or just online? I could actually go to the store and pick it up there and then if it’s available in store from the Sunday

Gravatar
By in Australia,

if any bit looks tricky, its the roof. It's beautiful, but looks difficult

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's got Scary Bilbo! Man, that 5 second sequence terrified me as a kid... still does!

Gravatar
By in United States,

A justification for PayPal pay-in-4 was never better illustrated.

And yes, absolutely. Take. My. Silver-steel.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is stunning. Especially compared to 79006. Time to start saving up!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Looks great but peeved it won't be a day one purchase for me due to finances...heck...might remain on the wishlist for some time...

Gravatar
By in France,

This is fantastic, definitely getting this one!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

The one set where it makes sense for an axe to be able to fall apart, and they make a new 1-piece, smh /s
Honestly, it's gorgeous. Too big to fit anywhere and too expensive to ever make it mine, but it is definitely the best LEGO set in quite a while. I just hope some smaller LotR minifig sets will come out eventually.

Gravatar
By in United States,

AAAAHHHHHHH my wife's going to kill me...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@bobsy you were right about the price being outrageous! ??

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Not my theme, but this looks like perfection to me. Superb minifigs. Excellent diorama build. Vern pieces. Fantastico!!

Gravatar
By in Spain,

I'm not even a LOTR fan, but that architecture looks gorgeous. Too bad it's beyond my budget.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Sausage chairs. That is all.

Gravatar
By in United States,

huh noticed lots of new weapon molds, but no sting?

Gravatar
By in Bulgaria,

Maybe one of the elves is Figwit?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The line ended in 2013.
But all of us were deceived
Another LOTR set was made.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

It will be out of stock in day1. I really appreciate they have the whole fellowship - and beyond. Amazing set, I cannot live without it.

Gravatar
By in France,

It is just perfect, more beautiful than in my wildest dreams!!! I am so happy!!! Day one purchase, obviously :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The power of the ring could not be undone

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

Looks fantastic!!! Why couldn’t they do this for Hogwarts? Or any of the Wizarding World locations? :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

there's bits I like, I'm just not sure I like the whole thing to spend so much. I brought the HP castle recently for an moc and that was a pain which still needs adjusting a little. The image of it in parts makes some of it look interesting, but put together I'm not sure it appeals to me.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The only negative I can say so far, is that it is going to be a tedious pain to setup all those 1x1 tiles on the roofs

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Hah, 6k pieces where 2k is just a roof and water....;-).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Should I buy this or a car so I can get to work?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not a huge LOTR fan, and I won't be buying this set. But I have to admit, it looks amazing and captures the scenes from the movie just about perfectly. Well done, designers!

It’ll be even worse trying to decide where to angle the injection - moulding blemishes that are often present in tiles.

Gravatar
By in France,

Gorgeous ! I'm glad that it's that expensive, this way I don't even torture myselft about getting it or not LOL

Gravatar
By in South Africa,

It seems small for the price tag. Kinda like the very first Hogwarts from like 2000 or so.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Gosh darn that's gorgeous! I'd even go outside of my mini-doll universe for it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks very impressive. Not one for March, as it will coincide with my biggest energy bill yet! Definitely a summer buy though. (I guess I better read/watch Lord of the Rings in the meantime!)

There’s a method of using a brick separator to slide along a row and align the tiles at once. Haven’t tried it but videos make it look simple.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

RacingBrick has a presentation now
Those tile-pieces for the floors look gorgeous...

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a beautifully executed set. Unfortunately there is no way I could ever afford it. But it's so impressive!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I'm just crying looking at these pictures. It is one of the best Lego sets ever made. Thank you so much Lego for bringing the theme back. Still in disbelief this set is happening.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very beautiful set. Unfortunately, I'm not a LOTR fan and $500 is way out of my price range regardless. I'm excited to see official reviews though!

Day 365 purchase after saving up for a while for me lol. I hope to get this before it's retired. I need this set in my life.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is way out of my budget, but it is exquisitely done. Bravo!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I’m going to have to watch the trilogy again to decide whether or not to buy this.

If they go forward with that Eye of Sauron that surfaced the other day my wallet is open.

Gravatar
By in United States,

this is going to wind up being too expensive for me, but what would have pushed it over the edge is if it had a set of minifigs for "the hobbit" as well, like the UCS millennium falcon that had figs from star wars and the force awakens.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

They're taking the wallets to Isengard!

I wonder how much kidneys are going for these days...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll be honest, that roof is so good it doesn't even look like Lego. Took me a while to realize that it's tilted 1x1 tiles.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow…did anyone else yell with excitement when seeing that it was minifig scale??? So glad it wasn’t micro.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Creative use of the hotdogs again.....did they get them from the RSotD? And apparently they sold ice popsicles too at that football game?

I'm not really a fan of LotR (after all it's just about people walking....even the trees walked in those movies!), but this looks pretty nice. Not sure if it looks €500 nice, and as usual it's disappointing to see such prominent stickers at this price point. But apart from that I don't see much to complain about.

@MudkipDoom said:

That will be $800. 00 in Australia there sir.

You should be able to use a spare 2x16 plate to help you line them up properly - still tedious but at least with a system you won't have to rely on eye alone.

New leaf part(very nice) and yet another colour for the eponymous 'sausage'. And a few other interesting 'recolour'. Not for me (i.e. no space for it but a thing of beauty - still tempted - must resist the call of the ring)

Let's hope this will do extremely well so we might see the other important locations of the trilogies.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well, there is only one question left to answer.

Where do I find the space to put the thing.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I know how I’ll use the VIP point I’ve been banking for a while! I’ve rewatched the films with the kids this past holidays and I fell back in that universe big time. This set could not come at a better time!

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Love at first sight!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely a day one purchase. But that roof though...I've already got anxiety.

Gravatar
By in Moldova,

I love the look of it, but it's just me or the set reflected in the ring in the teaser was way more beautiful?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is devastating for my wallet, but my jaw has dropped. SO many new elements and recolors in display. Those plants are going to be so universally useful. Awesome statues. Great new weapons (I suspect a new weapons bagged pack). Caramel ice cream pops for city fans. Even the stickers look phenomenal. This is the level of dedication LotRs deserves!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It looks gorgeous. I just don't see $500 worth of "stuff" in the build.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Let the collection sell-offs begin.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like what they did with the dual moulded legs for the hobbits

Gravatar
By in Romania,

where the hell am I going to squeeze this one now?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I still can't believe this is real!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Truly a work of art, at last I will have the nine members of the Fellowship in Lego form, as I stupidly just bought a couple of sets during the original waves (as I was slowly exiting my dark age).

The only drawback is that it's not fully enclosed at the back, but I'll live with it. Also, as someone mentioned, it will be a pain to align the tiles on the roof AND the moulding marks… (+ the LEGO marks on studs… my OCD knows no boundaries).

It seems no one has mentioned an interesting detail yet (cf. extra pictures): the Eye of Sauron is hidden under the council scene, which can be removed (an excellent function as well).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well, I guess it's added to the wishlist

Gravatar
By in United States,

The elves do not look the best in my opinion, could definitely use new face prints.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It is truly breathtaking. Kudos to the designers for crushing it. But $500 for a single Lego set, even if it's a good value, is hard to justify.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Giving an existing set as a GWP rather than an exclusive is no incentive to buy early. I’ll wait for a future double points promotion.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This set looks fantastic! The shaping of the chairs and the architecture are interesting. I love that they include the Minifigures that they do. Although I don't know how I feel about Legolas and his hair piece. It looks good on just about everyone else, but it looks a bit off on him for some reason. I'm glad Gimli has the midlegs, and half the fellowship have dual molded legs. I really want to see the new pieces up close, The new swords, axes, elven blade?, and ferns! Overall, a delightful set that I will probably never get. Hopefully they release smaller sets. That being said, with all of the new weapon molds I think we can expect that.

Yeah, I was about to mention this. Fun little Easter egg. Also a nice callback to the Eye under the ring in 79006.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm glad I'm not the only one. When I first saw those tiles, I thought they were new diamond tiles... I think it's just the angle that threw me off.

Down and to the right (SE). If even one of the injection marks is facing "up" my brain might explode.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

It's beautiful! But I don't need it. I'll remain happy with my good, old 79006 which is big enough for me :)

Gravatar

This drops right before my birthday, and methinks I will be having A Long Expected Party!

Gravatar

Gravatar

Sorry can't write much of a comment, far too busy counting out my money ready to send to Lego...

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Does Frodo's sword glow in the dark?

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

five hundred bucks and they can't even make it sticker free

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

R$5.000,00 (US$963.00) for a set that doesn't even look big since it looks like half of its 6167 parts are 1x1 tiles. DOTS surely got expensive. The figs look great though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, wow, WOW!!! Love the details - the shards of Narsil! Ost-in-Edhil and Earendil! And Bilbo's / Frodo's mithril shirt in Frodo's bedroom!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Did anyone else, like me, get Howard Shore's "Rivendell" theme popping up in their head as they saw the picture?

Lovely rendition and I am impressed. The high piece count is probably due to the many 1x1 tiles and other small LEGO pieces. I mean, the piece count is only slightly higher than 71043, Hogwarts Castle, yet feels (and probably is) significantly smaller. (I'm sure it's the minifigure-scale vs. microfigure-scale factor, but -- as others have said -- this set works in minifigure-scale really well.)

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is beautiful. I love the minifigs and Gandalf’s legs print. Great details, colors, and parts usage. Love how they have Frodo sitting with short legs. I’m interested in seeing how the Eye of Sauron function works. But what a price. I know I’ll never own this. If I had a choice between this and Lion Knight’s Castle, it would be the castle. I’ll stick with the 79006 Council of Elrond set I own.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

It is great but, why is it just a section and not a Hogwarts like set?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I can't believe this is an official set, the detail is incredible, it looks like a MOC that a diehard fan spent years on. I'm gonna have to binge the movies again to remember who all the characters are

Gravatar
By in United States,

STUNNING from what we see here but completely NOT in my budget at all. Happy for those who will be fortunate enough to buy and display such a magnificent piece!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's a really well-designed set with some great new minifigures, but I don't think that it's good value for money. I am sure that it would be fun to build, but I could find far more enjoyable things to do for the same money. Also, what do you do with it when it's built. You can put it in a glass cabinet and treat it as an ornament, but again there are a lot more beautiful things that I could buy to admire for the same money. I miss the days when being an AFOL was mostly about building your own MOCs, sharing them with other AFOLs and admiring their ones, not salivating over the latest very expensive set.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Question: anyone knows what is the 2x2 tile part near the top of the roof? (sand green/verdigris)

It can't be a tile because it is thinner.
It can not be a 2x2 bracket or a 2x2 hinge because studs would be facing out.

My best guess: a new part. Next question: how does it attach to other parts.

Gravatar

Love the set but Legolas's face sucks. It's an existing print right?

I also feel like we're sure to get more Lord of the Rings sets after this. Would they make those new weapons moulds just for a single set?

I must be the only person who could care less about LOTR…

They use headlight bricks and 1x1 plates for that effect. In the council area you can also see that Elrond and Gandalf have parts to give them a sitting effect. Admittedly, the short figures threw me off at first as well.

Gravatar

Best set of the year 2023 easily, already! What could stand up to this?

Gravatar
By in United States,

1. How are we supposed to line up those roof tiles? My OCD demands it.
2. Are those fern leaves new?

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's definitely impressive, and I will undoubtedly stare at the display version in my local LEGO store for a large amount of time... Also happy that LOTR fans are getting the set they've been waiting for. But LEGO needs to ease up. This never-ending stream of large, costly sets is getting exhausting...

Gravatar

Must research if Tolkien has said anything controversial in the past and then demand a boycott.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I fell asleep during the first Lord of the Rings movie and have never watched it again nor any of the other stuff from the franchise despite playing The Hobbit game on my Apple II back in the day. ...so this set looks really nice, but does not interest me.

However, I just got a text from my wife upstairs. She wants it for Christmas. (She's STILL building her modular bookshop set that I bought the first month that was available...so this set might get built by 2030?)

Gravatar

It is the road sign piece 30258 attached with a bar across the length. You can see it in the image with the separated sections.

The build looks great from the front, not so good from behind.

I like the Hobbit legs being dual molded and that they have updated the prints to distinguish them from the old minifigures. I'm not a fan of the heads for Merry and Pippin, they look a bit goofy with such big teeth.

I'm still not a fan of Boromir's hair colour but at least the print seems a little darker than before. Gimli seems to have had his beard bleached and ended up orange since last time too.

Yes! I really am always disappointed in Lego sets with the back just open. I want whole buildings to display!

Those marketing people. Something cannot be much-anticipated if it has not been announced yet. So you're saying those leaks were deliberate?

By in Canada,

Expensive but I don't think overpriced. $670 CAD for 6100+ pieces and fifteen minifigures seems about right - I was worried it would run $700! Certainly a hefty price and a large display piece, but still, what a result. Glad to see the full fellowship here, updated even.

Unpopular opinion:
I think that the minifigures are unsuitable as a medium to represent real people.
Luckily there are enough recent sets that fulfill my wishes with their stylized figures. Above all the 10305. Majisto > Gandalf.
Of course I'm a huge fan of the topic itself.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a bit concerning. First we get Brickheadz and now we get Icons. Are they intentionally avoiding a LOTR theme? After all, UCS is still in the Star Wars theme, not Icons. I’m really afraid this may be a one-and-done. The theme has so much more potential (even without the Amazon series).

If this is really the end of the line for LOTR I may be tempted to buy it, but I’ll wait until it goes on sale or I can find one second hand. But I really wish they would release $1000 worth of regular sets over the next few years as I would buy all of them without even a second thought. But $500 for just one set is just way too much.

Gravatar
By in United States,

OMG! I have not wanted a set this much since 10237 Tower of Orthanc funny enough. One of the grandest sets ever (100% bias though.)

All the new parts are wonderful. Most of the figs are perfection, especially the Hobbits with the dual molded legs (and the sitting leg doubles are brilliant). Disappointing Gandalf doesn't have a hat/hair combo. Boromir's colors look off to me, too much blue. The reuse of the faces are serviceable, except for Gandalf and especially Arwen. Glad I have all the originals to mash up and make the perfect LEGO representations of Middle Earth.

So hyped!

Gravatar
By in United States,

My initial reaction is that I like the design of the set. Happy to see the return of the theme. The set has a nice selection of minifigures and tons of intricate detailing.

On the more critical side, the price point really brings the premium incurred by a licensed set into stark reality when compared to something like 10305 .

Working to balance my FOMO with my personal collection's saturation point - in terms of my own available display/storage space, the volume of high price point sets LEGO has been releasing, and the cost of trying to keep pace with all of that.

But, the set itself seems like a winner. Mike Psiaki is gunning for MVP LEGO designer.

If people are going to argue value of pieces verse price, keep in mind how many of the roof tiles there are. That’s a decent chunk of the piece count I would imagine. Using the volume of stuff model, I would say this is $300 to $350 worth.

My best guess: a new part. Next question: how does it attach to other parts."

It is the road sign piece 30258 attached with a bar across the length. You can see it in the image with the separated sections."

Yes, that works. Thanks. On the other hand, I'm slightly disappointed no new part there. I have to learn to use these road sign parts more often - the main problem with these parts is the protruding clip is in the centre - it would be more useful with the clip (still completely on one side) but on the edge of it (like a flat (no studs) 2x2 hinge with clips instead of hinge).

An impressive, artistic build with a great selection of minifigures. The price is rough for an incomplete building, even to a huge LOTR and Lego fan such as myself. The minifigures are reusing too many face prints, with Arwen in particular being a major disappointment. Overall it's just too expensive for what it is, despite the quite impressive price-per-piece ratio. That said, I would probably find a reason to get it at some point, hopefully at a decent discount.

I think the size of this set is alright, but for this price point I expect a full building rather than half of it. This set looks like a glorified version of 80044 that is almost five times more expensive.

IDK, they seem rather comparable to me. 10305 is $400 for 4500 pieces + 22 minifigures, this is $500 for 6100 pieces + 15/20 minifigures. Rivendell has a lower PPP (I know that many folks disregard PPP). In terms of size, the Lion Knight's castle is 17.5"x14.5" while Rivendell is 28.5"x15". I want them both.

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

I do like it the set but the problem what I see here is the price because really a minimum 1/3 bricks will be 1x1 and the price is not justified here. Second, the set is mostly one side display only. Where Lion's Castle provide perfect view in every angle (when closed), this one is not and that's what's bugging me the most. The set should be positioned around 350 euros and it would be perfect but right now, not really.

Gimli has never had the classic lego axe, the one he had in the original run (53454 Weapon axe head clip) was introduced for him in 2012, and there are several much older axes including 3835 (Utensil, axe 1978), 3848 (Halberd 1978) 4438 (fabuland axe 1983), and 6123 (Halberd Elaborate).

10312 ($230)
910002: Studgate Train Station ($400)
60337: Express Passenger Train ($190)

My wife might finally divorce me if I do not control this spending.

I, personally, don't like really large sets. I find them exhausting to build. I also don't mind an open back building, especially one with this much depth.

But for $500 wanting an enclosed building is understandable. I'd expect one, too. The set either needs to give me more or cost less. You want more, I want less. Neither of us are satisfied. And for $500 I don't think we can have any doubts or misgivings.

To me, the perfect large set is Mos Eisley. Enclosed building, nothing more that I would want, not $500.

I have been building the set today and there will indeed be a review, although not for a little while yet.

With regard to when sets usually arrive for review, it can be as long as about a month ahead of release, but is usually closer to two or three weeks early. Sometimes they arrive later, but I think LEGO aims to send them at least two weeks in advance.

Yeah, unfortunately I cannot get behind the hype to buy immediately. A regular BH set GWP is not going to get the FOMO job done. 2x points is far better. But, it will take more than that, for me at this point. I'm buried under a Lego reorganization project to flatten old boxes and make room for all my "blessings" that are also still in boxes. It's a lot.

I would buy this immediately if they had even bothered to do an Eiffel type GWP. Nevertheless, I'm loving this thread with all the positivity. I would love it to be enclosed, but then it's $600.

Well, can’t be bothered. Again a very expensive set with a million pieces. I’m really not impressed, even a bit underwhelmed considering piececount, even though I like LotR.

It seems that 500 is now a common price category for sets instead of something really exclusive. I’m even getting to a point that I’m losing interest in Lego since it looks like all needs to be bigger! more pieces! more money! Instead off somewhat cheaper sets with lower piececount and more intricate to build.

Apologies for my rant, but this was really my first thought when seeing this set.

Oh, great, another five hundreds bucks set I cannot afford. The sad thing is that I like it, this time.

Well, six thousand parts are not few, but I suppose an half was 1x1 tiles for the roofs :p
Ok, just kidding, but I want to say that 6000 parts for 500 € doesn't appear a good parts/price ratio this time, too many little cheap standard parts used for details.

Otherwise it appears to be a great set with great details, but for a similar price (100€ less to say the truth) I'm mostly attracted from the 10305 castle, another set I'd like to buy but I will not.

That was my first thought.

Of course, I expected a lot of people to hit their auto-complain about the price button (and wasn't let down), but was quite surprised it was 'only' £500 give its size, piece count and that it's a licensed set (though admittedly not Disney).

I was hoping for something a little less spendy.

I mean it looks nice and all, but the recession is real. Inflation is real. And anyone with any sense could see it coming three years ago when all the panic started.

I’m not sure there’ll be budget for this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would absolutely get it if it was $400, but as someone else said there's a lot of pieces in the roof and the water. But they really need to find someone who is better at designing the trees for these sets. I though the A-Frame trees were bad, but these really look ugly.

Am I the only one underwhelmed by the GWP? I really don't care for the Brickheadz sets, would prefer something more interesting and fitting for something this massive (and expensive).

Also, I really like the elf statue minifigs, but why don't they have elf ears?

Set looks really cool. I don't foresee myself getting it at all though. Even considering I got allmost all the LotR sets and a lot of the Hobbit sets back in the day. Just not enough Blacktron, y'know?

It’s very underwhelming. A unique GWP would have been great (although I get the hatred of unique GWP’s).

For some reason the fact that the GWP is a Brickheadz set makes me think that the LOTR theme will not return in the form of smaller sets. I’m guessing they prefer to serve the market with the large expensive sets rather than do an entire theme. Especially if the target market is adult collectors with disposable income. I’d love to be wrong about smaller sets though.

I think it's great, I don't mind the price, and I will buy it at the right time.

Thanks god Disney didn't get their hands on the LOTR intellectual property. They would have ruined it like everything else they bought up.

True on the roof tiles but there's a few NEW elements (new sword, new axe and all new broken sword, new fern/leaf element, prints-I believe the floor of the council), recolors galore, large leaf elements, 20 minifigs counting the statue figures, all within 6100 pieces of a licensed set.
$500 is spot on for the price. Incredibly fair.
No way you're getting this amount of stuff for $350-
Go look at prices and similar piece counts/elements/licensed/etc. from past Lego sets and use an inflation calculator. Lego here did the right thing and made it a fair price.

It's probably due to them not wanting to add a new recolor since they already have a bunch of new parts/prints in the set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's definitely a nice set, and the roof has a design that I can't remember seeing in an official set before, but now that I see it I feel like microscale would have been a better option for Rivendell. The main thing about Rivendell that was cool looking was the overall architecture of the structures and how they integrated into the landscape, but with the small section of building they were able to do, all we get is a sort of rectangular roof section and one tower.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The large roof is 48 studs wide by 24 studs long, assuming it was a proper rectangle, and only decorating every other stud with a 1x1 tile, at those dimensions, that’s 576 1x1 tiles. PAB has those (the opaque ones) listed at $0.06 USD. So, that would be $34.56 USD. But no way LEGO is going to price the parts in a set as they do on PAB. I’d assume they’d price them at least half that given the discount afforded LEGO employees and the discount I used to receive (40% off) on LEGO when I worked retail. So, $17.28 USD, 3.46% of the price. No, the roof tiles are not significantly adding to the overall price of this set. Though… if my haphazard count was correct, that would be 9.34% of the total piece count. My estimate is somewhat liberal given the smaller roof is 88 1x1 tiles which is to say I’m over. But… you know, math and stuff. Whaetvs.

Gravatar

Pass. I'd rather have a microscale version of the entire structure with terrain and waterfalls/spillways.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Regarding the set: looks impressive, but I don't have any great desire to own it; even if I had the budget, there are other big sets that appeal to me more. I might pick up a smaller (non-Brickheadz) Lord of the Rings set or two, if they come around, since I do casually enjoy both the movies and the books; but not something this big.

I'm interested in the minifigures though. Comparing them with the originals (which I don't own either but the on-site database is useful!)... I think I definitely like better the new versions of Boromir, Merry and Pippin; aside from several small details feeling more authentic too, their new expressions also feel to me like they capture the movie portrayals of the characters more accurately. Elrond and Legolas too; I like better that Elrond's crown(?) is printed on his head this time, and while I wasn't convinced by Legolas' new design at first, when comparing the two, I feel like his original minifigure's expression looks uncharacteristically severe and disapproving, so for me the new version works better. The dual-moulded legs definitely improve all the Hobbits, too.

On the other hand, I much prefer the older versions of Aragorn, Arwen and (aside from the legs) Sam. Aragorn's new face looks good, but I prefer his original outfit; Arwen just feels a little bland here, especially since she uses the same hairpiece as all the other elves while her original minifigure had a unique piece. And Sam... well, if the orange shade for the hair that was used for Merry last time was changed to lighter here because it was too dark for him, it also feels too dark for Sam as well... though that is perhaps a product of making each Hobbit have a different hair colour. His original's slightly more rumpled look and determined expression, too, feel more authentic to me; although I guess since those are a product of his and Frodo's journey to Mordor, it makes sense that he doesn't display them yet in this earlier scene.

Gandalf, Gimli and Frodo, I don't have strong feelings about either way; their changes don't feel either better or worse to me.

I dunno, this is probably an over-analysis xD I just felt like sharing my thoughts ^^

Saying did the right thing is odd. It’s not a moral choice they made or something. Of course there’s no way we’re getting this set for $350. But you’re thinking in terms of Lego’s high prices, not value for what you actually get. The price falls in line with how they price other stuff, but everything they sell is overpriced. This is a good looking set, that’s for sure, but as far as substance, I don’t think it’s worth $500. It’s not about it being a fair price.

I can't see it either. I went to the product page at LEGO, stopped the "showcase" short video right on the side of the build, and counted the studs. Can't get an accurate depth because the sections are angled, but it's about 1.5 baseplate-worth of depth by my estimation, at best. No idea how they measured that.

If someone has a problem with a company and its prices, THEY need to determine for THEMSELF how best to deal with it. Nobody else has the right to decide that for them. Nor are rude comments from the peanut gallery needed.

Obviously bonus points and potential sales come into play, but again, it is up to the purchaser to decide what is best for them. Nobody else's business.
