New LEGO House exclusive set revealed

Posted by ,

The fourth addition to the numbered series of LEGO House exclusive sets will be 40504 A Minifigure Tribute.

It will be available exclusively at the House in Billund, Denmark from March 1st, priced at 599DKK (~£70 / $85 / €80). Here's the press release:

LEGO House releases tribute to the iconic LEGO minifigure

This year's LEGO House Exclusive set “A Minifigure Tribute” (40504) is a celebration of the LEGO minifigure — an indispensable part of the LEGO history since 1978. For 45 years, the tiny character has made it possible for children and adults to step into any adventure built in LEGO bricks. This limited edition set will be released on March 1, 2023.

Every year, the LEGO House Limited Edition set celebrates an iconic moment in LEGO history. One such moment was the launch of the LEGO minifigure in 1978. The small figure magically gives you the opportunity to become part of any LEGO adventure you choose to build - whether you dream of a noisy battle at sea, putting out a fire in LEGO city, entering hyperspace in a rocket, or hosting a feast in a castle. That magical ability turns 45 this year.

That's why this year's LEGO House Limited Edition had to be a heartfelt tribute to the more than 10 billion minifigures that have conquered the world since the launch. And it's done with a big scale version of the legendary Captain Redbeard minifigure - now with special details!

Kathrine Kirk Muff, LEGO House Managing Director, said:

"Can you imagine LEGO play and the LEGO House without the minifigure - | can't! The tiny, charming figure, just four LEGO bricks tall, is a standing invitation to LEGO fans of all ages as an empowering tool to tell unlimited stories.

"To highlight a significant part of the LEGO Group history - the invention of the minifigure - this year's exclusive LEGO House product simply had to be a tribute to the minifigure. The minifigure can be found everywhere in LEGO House, not least in the Character Creator and World Explorer play experiences. We also started the 2023 season with a photo exhibition where the minifigure was at the centre.”

Since the first minifigure was launched in 1978, LEGO designers have created a staggering 8,000 different minifigures with every imaginable face expression, hairstyle, hat, beard, dress, or superhero cape. Since 2010, they've even had their very own LEGO minifigures collectable series.

LEGO Group Designer Jens Nygaard Knudsen was the master of the minifigure design that we know and love today. He had to go through at least 50 different prototypes before finding the perfect design - a small figure that fits perfectly into the LEGO System in Play scale.

The original Captain Redbeard minifigure from 6285 Black Seas Barracuda was created by Niels Milan Pedersen, and we chose to recreate this iconic figure in large scale for this year's LEGO House Limited Edition set. Niels has been involved in the development of many popular LEGO sets during his long but still-active career as a LEGO designer. However, of all his many sets, his favourite set is still 6285 Black Seas Barracuda from 1989.

6285-1

Captain Redbeard is an intricate design with lots of fun details such as a hook for hand, peg leg, epaulettes on his shoulders, and a black captain's hat with the 'Jolly Roger’ emblem. All of that is meticulously recreated in this new set. The build stands 30 cm tall and consists of 1041 LEGO bricks and as a little extra detail, the pirate has a LEGO House bracelet on his hook hand and a treasure map in his hand with a secret reference to the designers behind the product!

This looks cool, I might just drive down there to get one this time!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Pretty nice, always happy to see another pirate set. Shame its an exclusive to the LEGO House though...

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Looks great. Shame it’s an exclusive. I’d buy them all if they made a whole series of these as a normal release.

Gravatar
By in Japan,

Beautiful!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Would love to see a series of those brick build minifigs. Space, Classic town, Castle… way better than the wooden non-articulated one a few years back

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I so far have all of the Lego House sets released (general Lego House Exclusive ones not LIT sets etc.)
This is the one I like most so far!, I love the old school Pirates theme so this will be a must have for me, hopefully the cost of getting one to Australia won't be too dear.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

My first minifig back in the 80s, and my second all-time favourite.

Would like to buy this one, but as other times, LEGO doesn't make it easy.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Oh wow, only 80 bucks? Guess I'll have to plan another trip to Billund this year :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Unlikely I'll be going to the House anytime soon so I'm gonna have to Bricklink or eBay one of these.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I like this one a lot, although there is no chance of me getting it because LEGO House is to far away. Might try to build something similar though, a large brick-built minifigure seems like a neat concept.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

Looks great. It is a shame it is an exclusive. I’d buy them all otherwise.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Guess I've got an excuse to go to Billund again this year!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

A big miss making this LEGO House exclusive as this is a loved figure by many any NOT strictly related to the LEGO House.

Unless it somehow appears on LEGO.com in 1-2 years, and even then, 40366 : LEGO House Dinosaurs are UK exclusive. (but seeing this is 4th in a "limited edition" Series I doubt that it will be sold elsewhere)

The skull on the hat does look too small tho (limited to the piece that sticker is on, and a 1x6x5 panel was probably too big.

I mean, the torso details are brick-built, so that skull looks out of place, maybe someone will MOD it to a "DOTS" tiled skull.

Gravatar
By in United States,

And once again, I really wish I lived close enough to the Lego House to go there on a regular (at least yearly) basis, because Lego House sets can be so dang expensive on the aftermarket. I love the way they made his torso details three-dimensional.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Good news for those lucky enough to live close to Billund/within proximity of affordable flights.

For the rest of us, inflated Bricklink and eBay prices it is!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Nice touch that the map basically shows Denmark

Not so nice that it's a Lego House exclusive. This certainly has less to do with the actual location than any set before. Again, it's like they're using the goodwill created by their own history to wring out money from people through indirect means. GWPs are one thing. But this is region exclusivity again.

How'd you get them in Australia?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Redbeard!

After him will it then be King Kahuka?
Then Basil the Bat Lord, Johnny Thunder, Barron Von Barron, Gypsy Moth and finally Rocket Racer?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I don't know why everyone is so upset about this being Lego House exclusive, we're all gonna be way too busy building our BTS Dynamite sets to care about some crummy ol' pirate

Gravatar

I had already planned a trip to Billund and the Lego house ( my first ever visit to Denmark) got this summer so I'm in luck.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A reminder that LEGO was normalizing limb differences before it was "woke".

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it the same dimensions as the previous brick built figs ie. Harry Potter?

Gravatar
By in United States,

And Black Seas Barracuda is still the bomb!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is that face completely flat? I notice it is always straight at the camera

Gravatar
By in United States,

That thing at the far left end of the "minifig evolution" photo will haunt my nightmares for the foreseeable future, thanks.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is really cool and I would get it if sold through normal channels. The legs and torso look great. I would be somewhat annoyed with the lack of availability, but seeing how they used big stickers for key details (map and hat) makes it feel just fine that I probably won't be able to add this to my collection. It looks like the face is printed...I hope so?

Gravatar

I would much prefer a minifig scale Pirates set.

Gravatar

I'd be a shame if they offered this the the general public.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I feel like this set has broader appeal than past Lego House sets and would be better off as a wider release, or at least Lego exclusive. Things like the actual house and dinosaurs were more house appropriate, but I suppose eventually they’ll run out of sets directly related to the house.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Looks amazing. I will drive to Lego House and pick this one up for sure!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Perhaps if enough people voice their dissatisfaction to LEGO that this is planned to be such a hard to come by exclusive they will offer it to a wider audience.
After all, the LEGO House Architecture exclusive and the Dinosaurs were eventually available from Shop at Home too, at least for a short while. Still better than only at the actual LEGO House itself or from scalpers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why in the blue hell is this a Lego House exclusive?!? I would GLEEFULLY pay $100 for this if it was available in the US, whether it be a Lego Store exclusive, or something you could grab off the shelf at Target.

Ditto for Majisto and a Red Space Man.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sucks such cool sets are so hard to get.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Makes perfect sense that this is a regional exclusive, as that will push LEGO fans to third party resellers, where they will spend much more than LEGO would have charged for the set if it was sold through regular channels, and have less money left to buy sets from LEGO.

I have no fondness for scalpers, but in this case I think of the resellers as distributors, since LEGO is only offering the set at one store.

Probably because these "megafigs" are display items, not toys. And while there are a TON of adult Harry Potter fans, the majority of those sets go to kids, who play with them. My 10yo has a shelf full of minifig Hogwarts castle sets. She wouldn't know what to do with megafig Harry and Hermione. As a 40yo, I'd LOVE to have a brick-built megafig Captain Redbeard (or Majisto, or a class Spaceman) on a shelf.

Oops! That part was in Light Nougat, printed with Harry and Hermione's faces, in 76393.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Why was the Jolly Roger not made to correct proportion if it's a sticker anyway? That 6x6 tile could have also been printed, but I guess the giant sprue mark in the middle was in the way...or they cheaped out as usual.
Judging by the huge success of the Harry + Hermione 6:1 figures (last weeks for 50% discount on lego.com), and this one being LEGO House exclusive, I wonder who thought that this would be a great selling idea.

Gravatar

Amazing how they continue to make these types of sets (along with some GWPs) that people would actually purchase, yet we get them behind paywalls or in such limited quantity they'll be $500 on the secondary market. Disappointing.

They have made the duck head before, both in the Disney like and the Duckpool figure. Which would be the hardest part. So they have facilitated it.

By in Poland,

I think this is a perfect set to be exclusive to the Lego House. There must be some unique sets that you can buy only there, to have that experience of being there. And this one is such a specific niche product for adults that remember this iconic fig from childhood. This is for die hard fans of lego. I cannot imagine such dust magnet could be a popular set on regular shelves. This is not for today's kids, not for adults outside of lego realm. This is for die hard fans growing up with lego in the 80s/90s era and that's a niche demographic.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This could be a nice collection. The first items should be (in no specific order except for the first one since it is already done): (1) Pirates, (2) Castle, (3) Space, (4) Johnny Thunder(Adventurer). Then they could do all sorts of their other theme: Batman, LLoyd (Ninjago), Harry Potter has already been made , etc. The only problem I would see with such a collection is the incredible amount of space required to display it.

Very happy for those who will manage to get this. In a way I am happy it is not a space guy because if they ever make a large scale spaceman, I want to be able to buy on regular channels. (I've already 'mocced' my own version but an official set is always nice to have)

@monkyby87:
Darkwing’s head is a markedly different shape than Donald’s family, so I’d be shocked if they reused any existing molds to make him (aside from the fact that I’d be shocked if they ever make him). For a figbash, it’d do in a pinch, but it still leaves the problem of his hat. The tail, on the other hand, is good to go.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

They KNOW a ton of people would buy this.
So, in typical LEGO Group fashion, they make it impossible to get for 99% of their customers, leaving them at the hands of scalpers.

As if I needed any more reminders that The LEGO Group is run by absolutely despicable and disgusting people.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Imagine working passionately for long hours to design a love letter for 80s Lego fans, only to find out 99.99% of the world can't get the set, and from the 0.01% that can, 99% of them will keep it sealed for future profit.

@mavndad said:

At a glance it looks identical, the legs and arms in particular seem to have the same dimensions and parts usage.

Personally, while I would like to see other minifigure designs like Classic Space, I would hope that they could do something closer to 41597 Go Brick Me. Lego fans love to represent themselves as minifigures, and while there would be challenges in following that kind of model, it shouldn't be impossible. Unfortunately, brick-built facial substitutions don't look right, so they would probably need to do a set of stickers with multiple faceplates. The legs and arms might need to be more limited, but the constituent parts for those are more common, so builders could customize with parts on hand.

@Josh_the_aquaraider said:

To be to scale, the map should the the width of his hips (2 studs wide at scale). As it stand the hips are 12 studs wide and the map is 6 by 6 studs. So this map is basically on a scaled 1x1 tile.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Now THIS is what I was hoping for when 76393 was released the other year; classic minifigures in that same style! And honestly who's more classic than the first Lego Racers hosting champion, Captain Redbeard?

Wonder if this could be the start of a series, all seven Racers hosting champions rendered in this style? I'd love to get the Rocket Racer one most of all, for sure...

That said: while the facial print is super nostalgic, I feel like it could have been interesting if it had been brick-built instead. I'm not sure how that would be achieved, but I feel like it would really have completed the look.

Still, by far my favourite of the Lego House sets so far ^^

By in United States,

This looks neat. Clearly I loved Pirates as a kid since they came out in my day. Would I want this set? Yes, I'd likely get it if it was available through a store or online. But I won't seek it out on ebay and I'll never make it to Denmark, so I will have to do without. It looks like could build it other than the head and if there is a sticker sheet. But clearly the face is the draw since Pirates is what gave us those different styles.

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in United States,

As a Pirates fan it's an honor to see the legendary Captain Redbeard be chosen for this set. (BTW when this set releases, can someone take a picture of Mega Redbeard storming Eldorado Fortress?)

My only complaints are the exclusivity and the map. This thing would sell like hot cakes if it were released across the seven seas. Also the map should be bigger.

Is there a good reason not to sell this at all LEGO stores?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think a correctly scaled map at 12x12 studs would begin to detract from the main focus of celebrating the minifigure, though for looks it would be better. Also consider that the 2x2 map is usually held edgewise in a minifig hand, but at this scale it might be too heavy even if it was possible to attach it to the hand properly. I think the compromise works well enough.

I've already added the mini version to my copy of 40563 !

With the exception of the printed "LEGO HOUSE" 1x8 tiles, all the printed pieces from 40501 (6313780 & 6313781) and 40502 (6339889 & 6339892) have been sold through Bricks and Pieces/Pick a Brick on the LEGO website. The ones for the duck are still available while the molding machine aren't showing up right now. It would be nice if the pirate face parts shows up there, as the only other exclusive stuff is either stickered or hidden by the map (the LEGO House bracelet).

@AustinPowers said:

By in Japan,

Wonderful! Ever since i got Captain Redbeard with my 6270 Forbidden Island set (one of the best in my humble opinion) as an 8 year old, it was one of the first minifigs that i was REALLY careful with and didn't smudge or overplay with it in fear of breaking it or smudging the designs. This design of him is better than the updated one of 21322 as i think some of the classic expression allow more imaginative and creative freedom. Anyway, i think Lego Pirates is forever synonymous with Legoland and epitomises the fantasy aspect that Lego has nurtured and grown throughout the years. Call me a bluff old traditionalist but I'd easily choose this over BrickHeadz and spend a pretty penny anyday.

By patiently waiting and watching BrickLink for Danish based sellers not looking to double or triple the cost and where possible getting multiple sets in 1 shipment (didn't buy multiple of the same sets, different sets).
Including the shipping and any fees (BrickLink seller, PayPal, Visa etc.) I've paid under $180 AU for each set, 599DKK is about $126 AU at the moment, so I think the price I've paid is not bad.

How is it not a regional exclusive if it's

1. Only being sold in one country
2. Not being shipping to other countries

A store exclusive is an item that's only being sold or shipping from a Lego store.

Anyway, these rules are meaningless. It's not really laws or anything. It's a made-up thing by Lego for Lego with no real world implications, so of course they're allowed to do whatever they want.

Very cute, but there are plenty of other things (other LEGO sets included) that I'd rather spend $85 towards, and that's BEFORE the astronomical cost of traveling to Europe (or paying reseller markups).

Anyone in Europe can fairly easily get to Billund if they wanted to take a holiday involving The LEGO House, the destination they are promoting with this The LEGO House branded set.

I don't mind regional exclusives and I think the world would not be any better if sets like this didn't exist at all. "

That is an absolute LIE.
Not only isn't going to Denmark cheap, for most of Europe there are no direct flights to Billund.
On top of that, what if people have no interest whatsoever in visiting The LEGO House?
I would love to buy this. I have ZERO interest in visiting the LEGO House, LEGO's headquarters or even LEGOland. Why on Earth would I spend thousands of euros on such a trip?

It's not available at any other store in Denmark, and it's sold at every LEGO House location in the entire world. Store exclusive.

"A store exclusive is an item that's only being sold or shipping from a Lego store."

No, that would be a brand exclusive (which would probably also be available on LEGO.com, and through LEGOLAND stores). 7848 was a store exclusive. It was only available at TRU stores. It was _not_ sold by LEGO Brand Retail at all.

Regional is something that's available through more than one retail chain within a restricted geographic area, or that's only available through a portion of one chain that's restricted by geography.

OK, I wasn't aware there are multiple "Lego Houses" locations, I thought there's just a single one located in Denmark. Is there a list of the other locations? Or do they count in the "Discovery Stores" as well ?

There aren't. They are saying it is literally only sold in this one store. Hence, store exclusive, not region exclusive.

There is just one LEGO House. And this is sold in all one of them. It’s not sold at LEGOLAND Billund, or at the two LEGO Stores in Copenhagen, Denmark. It’s not sold at any other retail chains in Denmark. It’s not exclusive to Denmark. It’s exclusive to _one_store_.

Oh nice hope you enjoyed it. No I don’t spend much time indoors. Only when it’s raining

If I lived there I wouldn't be wasting time indoors playing with LEGO :-)

(I visited Old San Juan and El Yunque lasrt month)"

OK OK... I get it... It's a "store's exclusive".... semantics. Given that there's just one store in the world it's de facto a regional exclusive. The only country in the world you can find this item at is Denmark (or with a 3rd party sellers that travelled to Denmark for you). For me it's the shipping. If they allowed shipping, I would call it store's exclusive, but because they're not I see it as being tied to a geographical location. But yeah, their rules regarding regional exclusives are not really rules or even a promise. It's a private company, they can do whatever they want so we can't really use what they said for or against them.

I meant I would pay for it, of course.

I love how Lego allows for resale of this on Bricklink and people in Denmark are already selling it for 2x the price. Why not just sell it on LEGO.com?! Same you you Lego.

Makes perfect sense that this is a regional exclusive, as that will push LEGO fans to third party resellers, where they will spend much more than LEGO would have charged for the set if it was sold through regular channels, and have less money left to buy sets from LEGO."

Yep. It's selling for over $200 on eBay

"This looks cool, I might just drive down there to get one this time! "

Given that you are close enough to drive there, I would be disappointed in you if you didn't! :-D

I'd love to pay someone to buy one for me and ship it overseas.

By in United States,

I'm glad they did another one of these minifigure models, even if it is just an exclusive. The original Harry Potter set was very cool! There was just way too much black and grey for it to really be 'fun.' The pirate is much better subject matter.
