- The journey from initial concept to final product was quite the adventure. While my colleagues Martin and Maddy, our talented graphic designers, collaborated on the minifigure designs, I focused on creating the vehicle for the set.
After designing the 75385 Ahsoka Tano's Duel on Peridea, I started pondering the idea of creating a Battle Pack for the Night Trooper unit featured in the series. My goal was to include a properly scaled vehicle in the Battle Pack that could accommodate all the soldiers, essentially a rapid deployment vehicle suitable for elite units like the Death Troopers on special missions.
In the series, the Night Troopers use an Imperial-colored LAAT/le, which is too large for a Battle Pack and wouldn’t fit the scale I was aiming for. So, I drew inspiration from various military designs. Think of the Black Hawk and Little Bird helicopters—both serve as troop transports, but the Little Bird is often depicted in movies making quick landings close to the ground for rapid troop deployment. This concept influenced the vehicle design in the Battle Pack.
Imagining the LAAT/le as a medium-sized transport, I envisioned what a smaller, rapid deployment version would look like. Thus, the LAAT/qd (Low Altitude Assault Transport - Quick Deployment) was born. It’s a variant of the same design family, similar to the difference between the Republic Gunship and Republic Dropship.
Unlike the LAAT/le, which has an extended fuselage similar to a Black Hawk, the LAAT/qd is more like a Little Bird, designed to be compact and avoid anti-aircraft fire. The LAAT/le’s body resembles a Black Hawk without a tail, so I removed the tail from the Little Bird inspiration, resulting in the final vehicle design.
The LAAT/qd can accommodate five soldiers, and the set includes two Death Troopers and two Night Troopers. The design encourages interaction with sets 75412 and 75385, so adding the Night Trooper from 75385 fills the vehicle perfectly.
The front features a complete transparent window piece, with standing positions on each side for quick deployment after landing—ideal for the Death Troopers’ special missions. It also includes weapon clips to hang handheld weapons on the vehicle.
During the design process, I was seated near the designer of set 75419. We discovered that the LAAT/qd fits nicely in the hangar of 75419, although swapping the soldiers for regular Storm Troopers might be necessary for compatibility.
